I haven't seen Aftersun (yet) but as soon as Seth said this movie was low on dialogue, thus much of the acting is nonverbal, I knew that Paul Mescal was *perfectly* cast for his role. If you've seen Normal People, you know what I mean.
He actually was Kildare's u18 captain, Paul is being extremely modest about his gaelic football skills! He probably would have had great success if he had gone down that route.
His acting in Normal people is phenomenal. I wish Aftersun was playing in more theatres!! I would definitely go watch UPDATE: i traveled out of state to watch the film in NYC. It was even more profound than I expected. 100/10
I did not know Paul Mescal was from Maynooth. I studied there back in 2016 and knowing this now kinda brings a whole new level to his performances for me. What a great interview!
Aftersun was devastating in a slow and measured start that caught me with my heart in my throat in the last 10 minutes… Quiet sobbing around me in the dark theater…see a matinee where you have some space later to process it ❤️🙏
For any Americans watching, Ireland has 2 main national sports: Gaelic football and Hurling. Hurling is a fast-paced stick sport, is 3000-years-old, and is the fastest field sport in the world. There are 180+ clubs in North America!
@@fabiananascimento2882 Hurling and curling are two very different sports, despite only having a one letter difference in their spelling. Hurling is a fast-paced Irish stick sport played on a field. Curling is played on ice where players slide stones. Hurling is played between two teams, with 15 players either side, in two 35 minute halves. The objective of the game is to progress the ball up the field to score one of two ways through an H-shaped goal post: in the net for 1 goal (worth 3 points) or through the upright posts for 1 point. Hurling is considered to be the fastest field sport in the world with the ball reaching speeds up to 181.1 kph (112.5 mph)!
They shot this movie in Turkey and i would come from Istanbul for you, Paul. The movie is about father-daughter vacation and i'm sure it will hurt me emotionally. I can't wait to watch.
I don’t know if I would associate Gaelic football with a lot of violence. Not saying that it doesn’t happen but it isn’t a weekly occurrence. That aside, he seems like a really nice fella and great actor. Pride of Maynooth.
A few weeks ago I was in London, I had never been there, and in a pub I saw a beautiful man with an incredible nose. I stopped looking because I was inhibited. Days later I found out it was him. I had never seen his work, now I'm a fan, Normal people it is a jewel...
Correction: Gaelic football is not technically rugby just like American football is not technically rugby. Okay, less a correvtion than a clarification. Gaelic football was codified in the 1880s, and is native to Ireland. Soccer and rugby were codified a few decades earlier (1860s?) and are native to England. Gaelic Park in New York hosts Gaelic football and other native Irish games like hurling.
One as a historian this is a good general overview of the history of football. Two i do feel like this was unnecessary as he is not saying that Gaelic football came after rugby. He is just saying it is similar (pick up ball and get points) it's a general comparison and general comparisons are never to be taken as 100% truth
I know its a light hearted show ,but he could have explained gaelic football better Its not technically rugby and its not the latest anything its been played since 1884 atleast and it does have rules
After discovering PM in All Of Us Strangers I craved more. Then viewed Normal People and Aftersun. Incredible performances- top drawer the rest deal. Looking ahead for Gladiator and God's and Creatures
I played rugby for a few years before playing my one and only game of gaelic football, it was a rude awakening, I was useless in every way including physically.
It's possible that in his birthyear that was high fashion! John Travolta Saturday night fever style. But during that time. Me i also was young 😄😄. I also like him more in casual, sportif cloaths but when he feels good in it than it's ok. For me Paul stays a beautiful, young lad even that i don't like always his haircuts or earrings 😛 (that must be my age😂😂) But that depends, i think, sometimes from the projects he is working at.

Classic Irishman…can’t take a compliment and won’t boast 😅
I doubt going on to play Senior for Kildare would result in much success 😂😜 But yeah I get what you mean, personal success and all that

Im obsessed with how different he is in real life from his characters. Like even the tone of his voice is so different
Probably beacaust he plays a Scotsman in Aftersun. Different tones for different zones.
