Aftersun is an extraordinary film. The way it uses the film lens to look at memory, perspective, and understanding our parents-who they were to us then and now. Who they are as human beings, and how they live on inside us. By far the best movie I have seen in many years.
@@williamgardiner2010 Mescal is nominated for Best Actor for his role in “A Streetcar Named Desire” . The 2023 Laurence Olivier Awards will be held on the 2nd April.
@@jennifercramer6756 I really hope so. Last year, the National Theatre at Home (the streaming service of the NT alongside NT Live in cinemas) removed the Young Vic NT Live version of Streetcar, the one starring Gillian Anderson. No reason why they decided to remove the said version in the streaming library, but probably it could make room for the Almeida version. Well, fingers crossed!
The cinematography in this film is 🤯 Such a unique perspective/vantage points (reflections, angles, etc) Glad she's been receiving well deserved accolades as break through director.
Aftersun was the most beautiful beautiful movie of 2022. It was a revelation, I was shook. What I truly love about Mescal’s performance is that it’s so quiet and natural. It’s not a showy movie actorish Oscar-bait effort, like, he wasn’t doing it to get an Oscar nomination (which is totally what that Elvis actor feels like, like Butler is launching a political campaign). Mescal trusts the director and the script and his co-star (who is just an amazingly natural non-obnoxious kid actor, how did they find her?!). By trusting everyone else, he make his own performance shine. So my ideal Oscar list order is Mescal to win, Farrell, Nighy, Fraser, and Butler.
yup u described it perfectly, it feels exactly like he's running a political campaign. My list is pretty much the same as yours, maybe switch Colin and Paul since he's pretty young and has a lot more time to get a win. but unfortunately the frontrunners are Fraser/butler and out of those two, id prefer Fraser for sure.
@@rubiksworld2170 To be fair, I’m not a Baz Luhrmann fan, so that doesn’t help. But I don’t care how much work went into prepping for the part, I care that I believe the character. I just saw a caricature of Elvis, especially older Elvis.
Paul Mescal is having an amazing couple of years and he deserves all the awards for his performance in Aftersun. Easily my favorite film of 2022 and a masterpiece debut by Charlotte Wells
Paul is so unusual as an actor in that he has no ego and can convey more on his silent face/physicality, than others do with 2 pages of dialog. He's also a good singer (like his sister) even in operatic mode!(Phantom in Phantom of the Opera at 16) I wish somebody would teach him ballroom dancing/Alexander technique for his posture - that will come with more confidence I'm sure. He has a marvellous frame/ shoulders( gaelic football) which will be handy when playing a gladiator in Ridley Scotts sequel.
He's really humble regarding the play: He's playing the lead role in "Streetcar named desire" and the tickets for the whole run sold out in less than 2 hours.
This is going to be one of those films people will be appreciating for YEARS. It has such a special place in my heart. And this was Charlotte Wells debut film!!
I traveled outta state to watch this movie in theatres in NYC. It was phenomenal and so worth it. Please see if you’re able to (and if your mental health is in a good place)♥️♥️
He reminds me of Daniel Day Lewis. I don’t know if it’s the talent, the fact that he’s Irish, the fact that he’s not really into the whole celebrity thing, or the earring 😂
Hopefully not before Paul Dano or Jesse Plemons. Timothee Chalamet has that face, but when it comes to white male actors, Dano and Plemons are currently on top for me
If WB and Gunn wants that new young Superman... Here's your guy. New approach, new face. A rising star capable of playing Superman for many many years.
I want to watch that Aftersun movie but I feel like it would be too emotional as I had a relationship with my dad up until I was like 13 and haven’t really been in my life since.
as someone in the same situation, it was very emotional, it’s already a sad movie but being able to relate to it on such a deep level makes it so much more sad, i still recommend watching it, it’s very good
Don’t know if I’ve suddenly unlocked dyslexia but I read this like “Pedro Pascal…” and then I was like Pedro wasn’t in Aftersun?? And then I seen Paul in the thumbnail and then I was like “Oh..” and now… Well now I don’t know what to say to myself

Don’t like Jimmy talking to Paul like that at all… You can tell when he likes someone, and it’s a strech saying he doesn’t like Paul, but he acts like he doesn’t care. I wish Jimmy stated that Paul was playing thuggish Stanley in one of the most iconic American Plays A Streetcar Named Desire which could have made the conversation even more interesting, maybe asking to hear what Paul sounds like playing blue collar American. It wasn’t just that he’s starring in a play, he’s starring in THE play, the most challenging , exhausting play for even the most skilled actor, not light comedy. A wasted moment.
I saw it two weeks ago. He was incredible in the role, accent was accurate, he was ominous, intimidating and scary which was amazing to see him perform, as we have seen him in many sensitive, emotional roles. He is one of the most talented actors of our time.
