Thanks for taking one for the team. That rear panel on your 4Runner should pop right back in and you'll never notice it was ever messed up. That's a sweet rig, by the way. Your kids are troopers! I think your son was into the offroading, but your daughter didn't seem too impressed by your hill climbing technique! :- ) I'm eagerly awaiting my Skydio 2 to arrive. Wow this was intense! I was on the edge of my seat! 😲 Dustin you take everything to the extreme! Great in-depth review of the Skydio 2 drone and Toyota 4 runner! Really good "real world" review! I think the Skydio 2 did very well, I'm sure it has some limitations but overall what a great drone!
That was pretty cool Dustin! For an autonomous drone, the Skydio stands alone. Good on all those engineer to produce something so incredible. I can hardly imagine what will improve upon it for future models.. Reminds me of the new Amazon Original Upload.. We are heading for a future with more and more tech.. Enjoy

I appreciate the review efforts. I don’t know if you edited out the tension, but I was nervous there when your rig started going sideways. I know I might’ve let a choice word slip out if I were in that situation. Good job not doing further damage to the fender once you were a bit high centered on that bumper. My first drone arrives in a couple days and your reviews have really helped me out. The Skydio 2 shows promise. The whole time it was showing the audience where your 4 runner was and it was clear from the birds perspective that the dirt was just too soft to allow the vehicle up. It seems that the Skydio gives priority to distance and thus even when it has some space it might not track the profile just to maintain the distance from tracking subject. It would be cool if the tracking distance and altitude could be set as a range and maybe some bias parameter to allow the bird more opportunity to track left or right profile better. Seemed like it would always defer to follow once there was any kind of an obstacle nearby but if someone were piloting they might’ve just got closer or changed altitude. Thanks again for the review efforts.

yeah, that was NUTS ! Reminds me when I got myself in trouble too above the San Francisco airport with a Jeep Cherokee...there were no drones at the time though ;-)

Dustin you sure put that one through its test when it loses you in among the trees, I think if you moved a bit faster it would lock straight back onto you. If you look when you are behind the tree you do vanish for a while. Great video again mate well done.
Years ago we stress a lot when we fly the drones with afraid of it fall out of the sky, flyaway, colide with things or some other stuff now the stress is not the drone but now the stress is the veichle 😄 that was a little stressfull watching that part from minute 41:22 What a nice drone.
Sucks that happened to your truck but what really matters is that you guys made it out safe and didn’t roll it. As far as the drone review goes you did a great job as always.

This is probably the most intense video Dustin has ever done. Near the end I forgot it was about the drone
Great drone, I think. I noticed when one might think it was confused, not responding, or slow to respond, it was when the person or vehicle was not moving. When you were moving, or the vehicle was moving, it seemed to have no problem telling what the front of the object it's tracking, was. Front, rear, left or right ... it can determine that the best when the object is moving. Just my observation. Great test flight Dustin and family. : )

That poor drone did really well. That narrow hazard rich path environment was really make its little AI work at full noise. Great drone, Keeps the subject in frame better than most DOP's Ive worked with.....and its not a DJI thank you!!
Great video! I have both of those too(4R and skydio)! I think the beacon GPS issue is due to it being used inside the truck. I will say, I also have an Autel evo2 pro and I had an Air2s, and neither comes close to the skydio tracking.

By the looks of the scenery, I was just flying in that area few days ago with my P4P2.0. Great video. That drone sure looks promising. I hope they give us more control of it in the future. I'd love to turn off the sensors and see how it does on full manual control. I would be curious if it could handle flying out 1 mile from the lookout and go whale spotting.

In before everyone says their 1982 Ford Fiesta could climb that hill.... I have a 1997 Land Rover Discovery and any ground that can't supply traction won't be overcome. You did good.
Thanks for reviewing the Skydio 2. You need an electric unicycle. It is too beautiful there for any other form of transportation. And you have two hands free for drone controls. :-)
Right. At this point it's a tire issue. A set of MTs might get enough bite
Might have helped. I think if I would have hit it fast on the first approach before tires filled with mud it would have made it up. I'll be doing a lift and bigger/better tires but probably only when the stock ones wear out. 🍻
Ouch that was brutal reminds me when I first got a 125 duel sports motorcycle & thought I was Doughy Lampkin but got stuck in stream at the bottom of a hill. Had to hand ball & drag it out.

Dustin. Maybe this will help. What I have learned. Skydio does not know where is front or rear unless the object is moving. If you change vantage while still it doesn’t know where to go unless you move. The slower you move the harder it is for the drone to figure it out. When you walk super slow it can get confused. That’s why it did better at following the truck. You really confused the drone in the woods because you had it set to follow you. You stopped when it got lost and then you decided to walked towards it to get out of the woods. All this time you still had it on follow.. now the drone is trapped between the trees and it wants to get behind you and it can’t. As soon as you cleared the trees it got behind you and it was fine. Next thing is when you use phone (no beacon) the drone uses only a visual reference of your shape to follow you. If too many things like branches or leaves distort the view the drone seems to be programmed to stop. Put a tree trunk in line of site and it will lose you. On occasion when it really gets in the trees the drone will guess your Turning and it will rotate and now your no longer in view. People seem to think the drone has more intelligence but all it knows is your shape and your direction. Practice with just the phone first and learn how it reacts. Then move on to beacon and controller. MHO. JIM O
