Motorcycle Auto Tracking With Drones-DJI Mavic vs. Skydio

- Understand that there is no perfect camera, drone, or tool for filmmaking or even for a hobbyist who just wants some basic shots. The drone or tools you choose will have to fit your particular needs. To get great cinematic shots you really must fly your drone manually so you can frame the exact shots you want and perform the maneuvers you want. No autonomous drone will get the same shots you can manually. If you think you're just going to go buy an autonomous featured drone and auto-track your motorcycle and get great shots then your sadly mistaken. One big drawback to using auto-tracking is that you don't have manual control over your camera settings and you must rely on the auto features. I'm not a big fan of that.

Hey Ryan, really awesome video. I think this is the most complete comparison of DJI Active Track vs Motion Track that there is. You're incredibly well informed, I can tell you put a lot of time and effort into understanding how Skydio 2 works.
Looks like at 22:14 Skydio 2 might not have had enough time to acquire sufficient GPS signal. In this situation, you can either manually pilot it back to you like you did, or hit the Home button on the app to return to launch point or return to phone. Similarly at 23:04, if you lose GPS signal as well as visual tracking, Skydio 2 will hover in place until it regains GPS signal, in which case it will perform an RTH.
Again, awesome commentary and footage. My favorite shot is 24:25.
I need one 🤤🤤🤤
I wish it was cheaper and smaller. Any idea if Chinese spies have visited you yet?
@QUICK-STAR The Skydio 3 is going to be so advanced, it will let you follow it and do time travel.
@QUICK-STAR We are definitely going to build and improve upon what we have built. In 5 years Skydio drones will be doing even more incredible things.
@@Skydio when is Skydio3 arriving? I want to start saving 😎
After so many years in the industry, you'd think DJI would have tracking down perfectly. Skydio seems to do the job nearly flawlessly.
= money = cost . what you get for the money.......nothing is ever perfect.= we are not perfect.
@@TONYPARAMOTOR that doesn't make any sense whatsoever.
DJI is better he just has his settings messed up I have the same drone and it does exactly what the skydio did Maby better
@@demolition1047 that's literally impossible. Try harder, troll 😂
@@demolition1047 actually no but ok
Tool for the job basically. I use manual flight for photography and a little bit of video work so it's DJI for me. A friend of mine wants a drone to video himself cycling through forests so it's Skydio for him
Hi this comment has been a year but how is he liking the Skydio for cycling through the forest? Is there any problems? I’m thinking of getting one just for this reason
@@lmgb1077 hey. There is a problem yeah..... You can't buy them in the UK so he still doesn't have one 🤦♂️ lol
Although I ride a bicycle your video has convinced me that the Skydio 2 is the drone that I want to use on my bike packing adventures. You have done an excellent job of evaluating these drones.
I love my Mavic Air 2 and have owned 6 DJI drones. They make great products and I prefer the control and high-quality video they offer. However, for anything requiring autonomous flight and tracking, I still with my Skydio 2 (with beacon). It's a totally different technology and years ahead of DJI's optical tracking (as good as it is).
Moral of the story, get a Skydio 2 if you want active autonomous tracking capability, but also get a dji mavic mini so you can easily carry a manual flight drone (tested out to 3 miles with same camera sensor as Air series, just 2.7k vs 4k resolution).
Looks like I’ll be adding a Skydio drone. Thanks!
I have seen Skydio done on some person while walking but you did it on a running motorbike. Nice!
I will be buying this and using it in my video in the future.
Have fun!
First off, thank you for your service, the vast majority of us out here appreciate you guys, and we are glad you are there. Great video, great comparison. I have a Can Am Spyder, and to be honest I never even considered having my Mavic Air 2, or Mini 3 Pro try to follow me on it. I just pack that min 3, go try to find a spot that looks good, and then I hack away at trying to get some decent shots. Great analysis, and great work. New subscriber here for sure.
Thanks!
Thank you!
I just bought Skydio and ride motorcycles. I Was looking bad videos about this Drone, but after this one, I'm completo sure It Was the right decisión. Thanks Ryan.
Glad I could help!
SKYDIO 2 ROCKS -- I love MY SKY its an Amazing Piece of Hardware - I pitty the DJI Lovers that cant see what we see as a Skydio Owner AWESOME JOB !!!!
what do we expect from the chinese product
Wow you got some great shots... Well done... and thanks. It show that you are excellent in explaining this.
Thank you very much!
I greatly appreciated this video. As someone trying to figure out what to be for tracking motorcycles this has helped me tons. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
A most thorough and comprehensive clip. Knowledge, music, post skills and scenery exemplary. Thanks for sharing your hard work.
This is a great review Ryan, no bias and no agenda! Thank you sir!
My pleasure!
I disagree about there being no bias. He repeatedly helped out the Skydio by manually moving it away from obstacles while he did nothing whatsoever to help the Mavic. His comments make it clear he had a low opinion of the Mavic's ability to perform from the very beginning.
Also, he's comparing the one and only thing the Skydio is made to do, and for which it has specialized hardware the Mavic doesn't have, to a value-added feature on the Mavic that isn't part of its core mission. The comparison would have been more fair if he had not used the Skydio's beacon.
That said, I would still expect the Skydio to best the Mavic in this situation even without the beacon. I mean, was there ever any doubt that it would? Skydio is really good at the autonomous stuff while DJI is... not so much. I can't recommend anyone trust DJI's "intelligent" flight modes.
@@dev_willis alright and I do not trust any Chinese drone over my head. collecting information about myself and country
skydio is truly amazing, I hope they make something along the line of the mini or air 2 at a more affordable price and I have no doubt they will claim a large portion of the drone market.
The X2 is a far better drone than the mavic series.
What a great video Ryan. Many thanks I have been flying RC Planes and riding motorcycles for over 50 years. Kaz in the UK. ......
Very cool! Shout out UK!
What a relief....you're not a typical YT "influencer" who waves their arms, talks a mile a minute, throws in stupid jokes, and waves their arms some more.
Looks like I'll be investing in the Skydio for my car enthusiast channel!!
this is a great video, thank you soo much
Greetings from Germany
This was such a great review... answered so many questions in so much more detail than any of the other videos I've watched.
Glad it was helpful!
I have both of these. Two different animals. I use the M2P for long range cinematic vids. The S2 for short range and tracking situations. My first tracking flight with the S2 was scary. Drove my truck with the beacon on the console. S2 was flawless, even flying backwards at 25 MPH while dodging trees, wires and poles. I didn't know how ninja it as until I viewed the footage. Both are awesome machines and both go on all my vacations.
I’ve got an Evo 2, as well as some DJI’s I’m going to try the EVO 2 and see how it does. The skydio did great on the mountain road.
Love to see how Evo ii does. I really like that drone.
So cool I didnt know u were a pilot. Good luck with this john
Wow, Skydio is next level. This was an awesome comparison!
Fantastic comparison!!! Your video help us decide to go with Skydio. Our RV is arriving around April or May of 2021. We would like to have a drone footage as part of our hiking/kayaking/RV videos. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Ryan, great video. I have Mavic Zoom, Skydio 2 and have just got the Mavic FPV. All three have their own strengths and definitely their weaknesses. Skydio is great at tracking but that little guy just dances when not busy, it’s like it gets bored; weird little thing. It is also so much louder than any drone I’ve ever flown. The fpv is just amazing manual footage, at speeds just not previously possible. As far as photos and the dolly zoom, the Mavic Zoom is really amazing. We were going to try the Skydio on the beach, following the bikes but it was too windy and I just didn’t trust it enough to put it up in high wind.
Yah, I flew my DJI FPV over the weekend. Has its place too.
Already purchased the mavic mini 2 but after watching this I want the skydio2
I think it would be great for filming BASE jumps 👌🏼
👍
Thats scary
I too planned on getting the Mavic Mini 2 , but after seeing how this Skydio 2 performs it look's like I'll have to dig deeper into the pockets now ' hella -pricey ! it would surely be nice to see if they come out with upgrades to the " manual-mode " for skydio 2 soon ( if/when that happens DJI will be in serious trouble )
Very nice review 👍
Skydio is the winner in tracking for sure, DJi in portable/size for motorcycle travel adventure, when space its a big factor. Best of both worlds, ... Skydio tracking system, with DJI folding arms and small portable size !!!! Who will make that one first ;) ......
Thanks for your great video !!!
👍
Hi Ryan, greatly appreciate the comparison video. Hands down the best drone tracking! Blue skies, Jg
Glad you enjoyed it!
Skydio2 will have my Money👍🏻
Thanks for great review👏🏻
U betcha
@@RyanUrlacher Ture that! >.. Sidebar: What mountain range is that and what bike are you riding?
I have a TW200 that sounds like that.. LOL
Just started my search for a drone. So glad I found your comparison. Now I see I need to figure MY preferences. Great video!
Glad it was helpful!
I'm new to flying drones and have been flying the older Mavic Pro for about eight months. This is the first video I've seen that shows the deficiencies of Active Tracking with DJI. I have an old speed boat and I tried to have the Mavic follow me using Active Track. It seems to stop for no reason sometimes, and I have to manually have it catch back up Andre lock on the boat. At least now I know that it is a general weakness with Mavics. Thank you.
I'm here learning from a pro who is into drones and motorcycles. That's where I wanna be.
wow! this is the drone I have been looking for. I am a cyclist and shoot action drone shot with my DJI mavic air, but I was never able to shoot my action film my self, never it was possible. On top of that DJI mavic air intelligence battery drains battery life slowly over time, I had to throw out several batteries. On top of that its return home function didn't function properly, I ended up losing it yesterday in Saw grass swamp. I did some good video shots with it but I was never satisfied and it wasn't for action shooting at all. It was impossible to do it alone. I am not going to buy DJI mavic air again, so I have been looking for alternatives. This Skydio 2 seems to be the one that I need. Thanks so much for review! It's amazing Skydio 2 followed you on high speed and changed direction of filming while avoiding obstacles by itself. DJI mavic air was never able to do that. I just found out this drone this morning. and It happened to be produced by American company unlike all other drone made in China. Way to go Skydio! I don't think manual control is an option for action video for the safety issue. I want just simple aim and shot automatic control
just like Gopro is for action camera, not sony heavy weight video camera. Thanks for the review. I am going for Skydio 2. period!
Superb review for bikers! Watched many drone reviews seeking true motorized tracking info but nothing close to the info you provided us. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video and please let us know if and when you move on to something offering better in the future.
WOW! That was a lot of effort you put in for this video!
Well done and thank you Ryan!
Great comparison and spot-on title/description as well.
I'm likely to pick up an Air 2 for the manual control / flight characteristics you identified. However, as a rider I've always been intrigued by the option of tracking while riding. I can't think of a better way to show how these two platforms attempt/succeed/fail at tracking a bike in motion. Even in some of the tests (and crashes) I also enjoyed the scenes you captured. Even if I shoot with a Mavic most of the time, that Skydio is now on my wish list and I'll be watching for any updates they do to improve their game in other areas.
Also loved the way you set up the video with your background and experience too. That is so refreshing and absolutely established immediate credibility in my mind. Thanks for a great video.
Thank you for the thoughtful, in depth comparison. I'm about to purchase a drone so this review is timely. Thanks for putting in the time, you have a new subscriber.
Glad it was helpful!
Skydio definitely handles well! Thanks for showcasing, especially since I’ve got a MA2 so it’s interesting to see how they manage…or don’t :)
Really good comparison. Thanks, Ryan. Liked and subscribed.
I think this test pretty clearly shows the difference in the focus of the drones. Pick the product for your majority activity and respect the limits of the technology. The skydio is clearly the superior in this type of activity.
I really like active track for searching for and tracking people at work, but have noticed that it tends to lose track of them when they are closer to other objects. It works great when they are running through an open field or vineyard though. Days off I’m flying solely with the sticks for cinematic personal footage. Great video!
Thanks for doing these drone + moto videos! I think the Skydio is definitely the better autonomous drone over the Air 2!
U betcha.
Looks like Skydio 2 is the way to go for tracking. Awsome !!
I would like to interject on the whole "crashing your drone" thing. There's very good drone simulators out there in just about every platform that allow you to practice drone flying skills without actually crashing them and will give you the muscle memory to be able to operate a drone a bit more proficiently to a point where you don't get "tunnel vision" and focus on the screen alone, if that makes sense.
Definitely interested, I’ll wait for the next version at this point.
You are amazing in all the things you endeavor in the understanding of the gear. You have to be very much appreciated at your paying job too.
Back the blue.
This is out of my league in so many ways but I enjoy all the information you share. Thank you!
Very cool footage and review.. I recently decided to dip my foot back into camera drones ( after destroying several non GPS drones in the past).. I'm still having fun with budget GPS drones, but was planning on buying the Mavic air 2.. after watching the video I may need to reconsider the Skydio. Thanks for sharing. peAce
👍
Ok, I know what I will be using for my fishing and camping channel I'm creating soon!
Just received my Skydio 2 and this was really helpful. You put it through it’s paces.
Have fun!!
Fantastic video! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this! Just bought the Magic 2 Pro for my adventure riding and having the same results! Probably will order the skydio soon. Thank you again for saving me a lot of time experimenting!
Like I mentioned on another users video of the Skydio - this looks like GPS errors. I don’t own this drone but I would suggest before entering areas of high density of objects (tress etc.), is to acquire a firm gps lock on the beacon and the phone FIRST, then slowly enter the areas with obstacles. This won’t guarantee consistent lock because while you’re ‘in the obstacle zone’ the GPS signals will be bouncing off all the obstacle causing GPS timing errors and your drone will only do what it’s told by the received GPS data. So, that’s my best guess on this issue .. all devices that use GPS are subject to this (which is why there augmented system to correct for these timing errors.. but this is not an exact science because any given environment is infinitely different and complex). Even in open spaces GPS geometry is constantly changing adding to the problem. Thanks for the video though, still quite impressive!
Beautiful countryside, thanks for a imformative comparision
A lot of hard work in that excellent production Ryan. I too have the dji air and love its manual smoothness, but have my sights set on a Skydio 2. Thanks for an entertaining and most informative and professional video. I've never seen your work before this and love your clear thinking dialogue. Subscribed
Awesome video! Totally convinced me why I want an Autel.
AWESOME job Ryan. Beautiful for the Skydio 2
Thanks! 👍
I'll probably stick with DJI Mavic Air 2 as even if it has problems with "follow me mode" It's smaller when packed and more all-rounded then Skydio for motorcycle touring, thank you for this comparison, if only DJI made something like GPS follow me from your mobile or from it's remote controller
Great video! I like the ease of the Skydio. I was looking at getting the Part 107, but with the new proposed FAA regulations I don’t know if it’s worth it anymore. I spend a lot of time in the mountains where there is no cell service and don’t think it’s worth third party involvement for Remote ID.
I really like the Skydio to help supplement the aerial videography.
Thanks!
Thanks for watching.
Wow! Great review. I have never flown a drone before and the autonomous flight capability of the Skydio 2 is just the drone for my needs. Thank you! I just subbed.
Thanks
Just happened across the video great content ,comparison and I like that you had no bias opinion ,thanks and keep up the good work
I appreciate that!
I'm curious where your remote for the Air 2 was while you were riding. I ride with my bicycle sometimes using the trace mode and haven't seen any of the erratic behaviors like you did except when the sticks were being pressed on accident. I figured out I need to take the sticks off and put it in my rack back to be sure they're not getting any accidental input.
It was not getting any accidental input. Sitting lightly on top inside of tank bag, no sticks on. These tracking issues are not new to DJI. Been dealing with it for many years on many different modes. Thanks for watching.
@@RyanUrlacher Cool, good to know.
Very helpful, thank you. I'm now not going to attempt using my mavic air 2 to track me on my e-board lol. To expensive to fix if warranty doesn't work! Skyduo is the business for tracking!
my mavic air couldn't even track me on an open hiking trail. I made 1 slow turn and it isn't able to adapt then loses me and freaks out.
Very fair and great assessment. Thanks, fantastic video.
Much appreciated!
Skydio seems to track well even though you and your motorcycle blend in with what is around you! I have a DJI mavic Air 2 and find i need to add contrasting colors to what I'm tracking helps it track better. It helps my motorcycles are all red as well 😄. Thanks for your review!
Guess who has a skydio 2 and pro upgrade on the way boys
Thank you for the real world motion track comparison, I own most of the DJI drones and also the Skydio2. I like to fly manually and for me flying the Skydio2 manually find very nerve-racking compared to DJI and just as you showed in this video the tracking on the Skydio2 is simply amazing but also has some downfalls, So for me manually flying DJI is extremely satisfying and I would not rely on their motion track capability, as far as the Skydio2 it is the opposite and has amazing tracking capabilities. Thanks for sharing your opinion on these 2 drone manufactures 😎
Thanks for sharing your experience
I 100% agree, I love the flight in manual mode of the DJI mavics, there are a few others that compare and the Altel EVO 2 series is all over DJI but, nothing can compare to the autonomous flight of the Skydio 2. I know the Evo2 has a good auto track flight as well and it’s good but, skydio is on another level.
Like you though 98% of my flight time is in manual mode and though I like the fancy features of the DJI drones I seldom use them and even when I do it’s really just to see how they work.
Usable feedback and excellent test footage.
Awesome review. I was about to buy a DVI. But that skydio looks to be the drone I need. As a Harley Davidson rider I wish for a drone to follow me. Thanks for the review. Subbed
Best demo I've seen .. thank you! Very informative.
Hey Ryan, a really really great review!!! You saved me some disappointment because I was just about to buy a DJI to use the Active track to film myself motorcycle riding down here where I live in Colombia. Luckily I saw your video here and will be looking for a way to get a Skydio imported here.
Thanks a lot for posting!!!!
Great to hear!
Amazing video Ryan, I'm seriously looking into the Skydio brand. Great job!
Thanks much
Skydio tracking is phenomenal
Thank you, this is exactly the information i was looking for !
Good morning. You're results surprise me. I would have guessed the DGI would win hands down. Not so I see. I cannot afford a drone right now but will keep my eyes open and continue to learn. I guess I should get my 107. I have my PPL and A&P, IA but no longer use them. I got hurt 10 years ago so am in the poor house but it is fun and much cheaper to watch others fly. It is beautiful country up there. We are cooking here in the desert. For the most part too hot to ride unless you have to and today I have to. Me and the 790A are off to down town Phoenix and the VA hospital. 104 today. Oh joy. Be safe out there and in your real job too.
TY
Love this video. thank you. I am sold on the skydio 2. i fly a dji spark now on my moto adventures and will be selling it. Also big love for the Mighty KLR.
thanks.
Have fun!
I agree 100% with you Ryan. That's why I have a Mavic Air 2 and a Skydio 2. The manual flying of DJI is the best, but Skydio is better a everything else.
👍
It is somewhat a right of passage for your drone to drive itself into the dirt. Luckily mine hasn't destroyed itself yet. Love the tracking features for creating videos though. The tracking feature does look good once it works as designed. Often have to try multiple times though.
Very true!
I'm very impressed with the Skydio. Imagine a Skydio 3,4 or 5. Imagine how much better it can get. DJi never perfected their product within a few years. It has taken DJi nearly a decade to get to where it is with it's current flagship drones. Imagine Skydio in another 5 years.
If 3DR solo was still in business dji would not be at the top either. It’s amazing drone I just wish it was smaller
Incredibly valuable to get that info from another creator. Thank you!
Did you have to shorten the distance for it to follow in the forest or did GPS in play a role when low to the forest floor?
Thank you for the side by side testing on these two drones.
U betcha.
I just recently bought Mavic 2, if this response was typed on paper it would be tear stained. Shoulda , Coulda Didn't
Also debating selling my mavic 2 air for the skydio 2

Thank you very much!
Thanks for this real time comparasion Ryan. The Skydio does really well... i'm very surprised.
Have you tried attaching the beacon to a mavic and having the skydio follow?
🤯
Excellent idea!
I'm glad you produced this video, I think I asked you about this very subject about a year ago when you were still building your new workshop.
Have you ever had a drone just say hell with you and take off for the hills and basically fly away?
I have never had an actual flyaway. Just interference and loss of video feed and then I go through my procedures to get it back.
Very well explained, especially for us dumbos, some lovely shots in the vlog, well done young man
Glad you enjoyed it!
When did dji start making motorcycles
Uh, they don't..
Saved me from buying a mavic air 2 😂👌👍
Thanks for this detailed review🥰New subscriber 🙋
Thanks for the sub!
well if you take photos and video without tracking and like some decent range and flight time then ma2 is better.. and cheaper.
I’ve got both of them! The Skydio 2 I use for tracking! I use my Mavic Pro Zoom 2 for everything else. By the way, the Skydio does not fly in low light or at Night!
Skydio need to dev/release a Beacon Plus 2.0 - bigger with 2 precision fold-down joysticks and a much bigger LCD screen
@CrazyJannis44 the Anafi controller is not for me. It is too big. more like the Taranis X-Lite Pro in precision but slightly smaller in size, and with fold down sticks like TBS Tango 2 - but keep the type of LCD used now on the Beacon which i can see with polarised glasses and tinted goggles too.
Wow, that's a great video.
Drone footage is so fantastic.
Thank you for the useful information about the drone.
I'm glad to be a friend of your great channel.

Great video! So, glad I went with a Skydio2!
This is purely one of if not the best real world comparison betwixt the dji mavic 2 and skydio 2 units. It is also clear that you are a motorized two wheeler aficionado. Thank you for taking the time to film retake and edit this video. How many hours of your time was expended to bring this project to completion from planning to upload?
Also, have you ever done a descriptive tutorial on the tools and techniques you use to color grade your projects. I'd like to see that! Thanks Ryan.
