    This was the first time Kershaw has ever faced the Twins. Most of these players have never faced him before. This was a great opportunity for him to pitch a perfect game for that one reason alone. No hitters are one thing, but the opportunity for a perfect game rarely comes along. He should have stayed in the game.

      It wasn't simply about keeping him fresh and healthy. Kershaw is 34 years old and coming off an injury. Its his first game after a shortened spring training where he was likely planned to only go 5 innings. He went through 5 and he and his catcher said he was losing a feel for his slider during the 6th inning. And it looked like it. He's not built up to go that deep into a game yet. And risk getting him hurt, perhaps permanently, over essentially just a stat? Kershaw's 34 with a lot of miles on his arm and recent injury plagued seasons. This is April baseball, not September or October baseball. Kershaw's going into the Hall of Fame someday already, even if he retires today. Hitting 200 wins and beyond will mean more to him than a single perfect game and would bolster his legacy towards becoming a first ballot Hall of Famer. Besides, he's a team player and wants to be at his best for the team. For most other players, you leave them in if they're in that situation. It’s become such a front office driven, efficiency/numbers obsessed sport. Who cares if the guy’s going for one of the most hallowed feats in the game, there might be *gasp* risk involved. And you can’t risk damage to an asset (remember they’re not athletes anymore, just depreciating assets) over something as meaningless to the bottom line as a perfect game in the regular season. They have an algorithm that says x number of pitches is the cutoff point and that’s that. The point is no longer to strive for greatness or achieve something special, it’s to maximize profits by being as efficient as possible with your resources and if you happen to win or achieve something great along the way that’s fine but it’s not the ultimate goal. (I know the Dodgers actually do spend but I’m talking more about the overall mindset that pervades front offices).

    • @khiewhy
      @khiewhy 2 года назад

      None of this matters in this instance cause it wasn’t the front office or the coaching staffs choice to pull him. They asked Kershaw and he told them to pull him after the 7th. In this case there’s no point in arguing. It is 100% the choice of the player.

    I despise Dave Roberts, and I'm a lifelong Dodgers fan. I had season seats back in the late 70s and early 80s, and I saw the great managers, Walt Alston and Tommy Lasorda ply their trade. There's no way either of them would've pulled Kershaw at that point.
    Roberts did the same thing to Ross Stripling during a no hitter. The Dodgers make the post season every year in spite of Dave Roberts, not because of him. I wish the Dodgers had a REAL Dodger as their manager, like Dusty Baker or Mike Scioscia.
    I also despise pitch counts. Baseball survived for over a hundred years by letting starters stay in as long as they had their stuff. Pulling a starter because of the number of pitches he's thrown is an abomination.
    And the thing is, there are far more injuries among pitchers today than there were when starters often pitched 300 innings in a season. In 1972, Wilbur Wood started 49 games and tossed 376 innings. The next year, 48 starts and 359 innings. But now, they toss 80 pitches, and despite having a perfect game, they get yanked.
    In 1968, Denny McLain of the Tigers won 31 games! 41 starts, 336 innings pitched. In 2021, there was one 20 game winner. Ironically, he was a Dodger, Jose Urias. And the Dodgers had only one complete game last year, by Trevor (innocent until proven guilty) Bauer.
    I know a lot of it is that most field managers don't manage the game anymore. There are pencil-necked geeks in a back room on a computer, figuring odds and telling the manager what to do. Sometimes I think baseball is doomed!

      Thank you sir for that comment -
      Indeed it's a real shame what's being done to the game. I can accept not having any 300 innings pitcher, but what Roberts did is totally unacceptable. And to be frank, I'm somewhat disappointed at Kershaw for the way he took it

    • @khiewhy
      @khiewhy 2 года назад

      That’s 50 years of difference, pitchers throw much harder now. The strain on there arm is much harder. I would like to know the velocity of the fastball from those 60-70s pitchers. I know during the 80s and so like low to mid 90s was a “flamethrower” A lot of those injuries today are due to to pitchers throwing there arm out. I agree pitch counts shouldn’t be the metric. The pitcher should be, or Atleast his stuff. If the velo is dropping he’s obviously tired and he needs to get pulled before he hurts himself. Kershaws fastball was down to even 89 I believe. And still Kershaw was given the choice here. There are many things I don’t like about today’s baseball however I do believe reduced the workload on pitchers is of good intention.

      @@rickkinki4624 yes but they are also like top 3 pitchers in baseball history. Ryan is an anomaly. I mean to throw that hard through 9 innings multiple times a year is insane. Still he’s human. If you look into his 30s his pitch count is down to much more of what we expect. Still a handful of more innings today though I will admit. And yeah Koufax through hard but he’s not Ryan. Koufax had to retire in his prime because he threw his arm out. He said his elbow would hurt every time he pitched. Vast majority of guys weren’t capable of even averaging like 95. That’s why I believe pitchers like Ryan and Koufax were so incredible because the vast majority of hitters at the time just can’t make solid contact with a ball a that damn fast.

    I stopped watching baseball about 6 years ago. It used to be my favorite sport. I grew up being a fan of Roberto alomar and Ivan Rodriguez. The reason I stopped watching was because the regular season has no meaning anymore. We used to talk about records being broken and now we just settle on the facts that guys won’t play 162 games anymore and pitchers won’t be pitching more than 7 innings anymore. Baseball games are micromanaged now. The shift, every player hitting 30 homers, and no base stealing have turned the game into a one dimensional mess. Players play less than ever and still can’t stay healthy. Mike trout has played more than 140 games only once in the last 5 seasons. Jacob Degrom career high in wins is only 15 and people say he’s an ace. Aces used to get 20 wins at least. If Pedro Martinez pitched today he would max out at about 15 wins a season because manager’s would be scared to hurt his small frame. Players are playing less than ever and getting paid more for it. It would take a lot to get me back into baseball but maybe they can fix it for the new fans.

Nolan Ryan once threw 235 pitches in 13 innings against Oakland and basically threw 130 pitches everytime he started a game until he was 46 years old. I get the pitch count thing, but come on. You wanna be compared to the great power pitchers of all time, yet you come out of a perfect game, CRUISING after 7 innings and 85 pitches.
