@Lefter Mc very important. I was a catcher, and what you are there for is to help yhe pitcher get guys out. Yr looking at where the batter sets up, is he looking inside or outside, is he late on the fastball, cant wait back for offspeed? The catcher needs to know the hitters, how to get them out, but also see whats happening in front of you. In this game, atlanta would have had some fastball hitters. The scouting on them may be - dont throw fastballs up to Eddie Perez, you must throw everything down..... eddie knows that you know this. But if you see Randy blowing his fastball past everyone, no one is getting near it, youd call it because of what you are seeing. As a catcher, what gives you most enjoyment is the game of chess against the hitters - getting them out. If they run, throw them out. Hitting is secondary, a bonus - the outfielders and corner infielders can do that. Whos more valuable to a team? Yadier Molina or Gary Sanchez? Id go with Molina. There are only a handful of gold glove catchers, but lots of people can hit homeruns.

Johnson tried his hardest not too show too much emotion but once he saw his catcher jumping up and down like a kid on Christmas morning, he was all smiles.
Love the reaction by both Johnson and Hammock (the catcher) at the end. Johnson was always a serious guy but he was notoriously intense during the days he pitched. Even after the final out, you could see Johnson momentarily reach out to shake Hammock's hand, in the typical business-like way he always did after a win. But Hammock was so excited, jumping up and down like a little kid, that even Johnson couldnt help but break out a huge smile of his own. I remember Randy in an interview afterwards saying it was Hammock who was the happiest guy on the team. How amazing people the braves fans are.. you can see their reaction in the last pitch in whatever angle all the people is happy for Randy! Even the big screen in center field congrats the Big Unit!
The color commentator wanted everything called a strike 😂
The commentator was Mark Grace, one of Johnson's team mates in the 2001 World Series winning Diamondbacks.
He was joking though.
@@jkillgrove Grace was drunk, IMO. Playing the homer role added to the call.

Uh....No
Seriously though! That one pitch was so far outside it needed its own area code.
I absolutely LOVE baseball. Im not a fan of the braves or their fans as a lifelong Met fan.. but oh so much respect to them and those who appreciate moments like this, no matter where you are what stadium youre in no matter who your team is.. i love baseball..
Still probably has the nastiest slider I've seen in 30 years of living.
The mix of delivery, movement and location... I don't think we'll see another randy anytime soon

I had a cat that I named Gonzo after Luiz. He was a good cat.
Make that 45 years of my life.
@@x_Ryujin prob the closest but still not even that close to his greatness
Cardinals fan here. Always dreaded facing the D backs against Schilling/Johnson...those guys were on another level. Great vid.
It was such a thrill to watch this man throw a baseball. We were truly blessed!!
90 mph slider 😱. I forgot about how actually fast he threw these.
They were filthy.
Man I watched randy pitch my entire childhood, and I barely ever remembered him smiling, this was 😎 he deserved it, top 3 pitchers of all time easily
He was one of the greatest. Why so many teams passed on him amazes me.
My favorite pitcher of all time Love You Randy. ❤️🙌🏾 i miss this type of baseball ⚾️
One of my favorite pitchers ever...amazing Atlanta crowd acknowledging a great Baseball moment
I can remember around the 8th inning all braves fans started cheering him on. I was amazed and was cheering too even though I’m a braves fan.
He's so good that even the other team fans had to get up and cheer for him even if it means beating their team.
R.J. is hands down my favorite pitcher of all time!! 👍👌🍻
I love even the braves fans appreciate the goat
It's incredible when the opposing teams crowd is on its feet and cheering for you. That's something special
I thought the Cardinals were gonna get an ovation after putting up 10 runs in game 5 but the fans were sour
I remembered watching this as a kid. Born and raised in ATL as a Braves fan. Watching it again years later actually made me tear up. Not only being happy for Randy but being so proud of the Atlanta Community to cheer not for us to get a hit but because they knew they were witnessing history.
