    On May 24, 2012, Justin Verlander pitched the greatest inning ever. That's my thesis and I'm sticking to it. It was not an immaculate inning, nor was it three pitches. It was, however, the most dominant inning ever pitched. In this third episode of Baseball Bits, we take a look at data from Statcast and PITCHf/x to show precisely just how special Justin Verlander's four seam fastball spin rate and Justin Verlander's velocity were in the 8th inning. Statcast spin rate is huge now, but can we use PITCHf/x to get a good estimate for data before 2015? It's time to find out in this baseball video essay, which also seeks to explain the term "rising fastball."
    Oh, and did I mention that JV is angry the whole time? He is angry enough that the RUclips video for this inning is simply called "Not Happy JV." That says a lot right there. He cranks out heater after heater, including a 102 MPH fastball that threatens to destroy the very fabric of our universe. Justin Verlander follows those up with devastating curveballs as well. While many have grown to love Justin Verlander on the Astros, the Justin Verlander Tigers days were something to behold, and I attempt to rectify a somewhat forgotten inning from a living legend. Why? I believe that it's the best inning ever pitched. Pure and simple. I mean, just look at that high spin rate fastball! You do not want to be on the receiving end of a Justin Verlander four seam fastball. I'm certain of that.

    Innings like this. Moments like this. These are the things that give Detroit sports fans their love of the game. We're used to disappointment, 62 years since the last Lions championship, 35 since the last Tigers, 15 years for the Pistons and one of the worst records in the NHL the last two years in a row. But then you get flashes like this. "Have you ever seen this inning?" you ask. I've seen this inning probably a dozen times. It's one of the most beautiful things. This, Stafford leaping over the Cowboys, and Stafford leading the charge with a dislocated shoulder are three of the things keeping me a Detroit sports fan. I have one Tattoo, it's the Tigers' Old English D, and it's because of Verlander that I have it. With the performances he gave to this team, he will always be my Tiger no matter what colors he's wearing. Glad you got your ring finally JV. We miss you and wish you NOTHING but success!

      I'm 35, grew up in the 90s with baseball as my #1 sport, love my tigers during those horrible years, laughing stock on sportscenter, so when the 2006 season came & started our run of good - great baseball I enjoyed every second of. It was the greatest time in Detroit sports history with 3 of the 4 major sports teams were legitimate championship contenders Pistons won 64 games coming off of back to back final appearances, Wings still in the middle of their 25 year run that produced 4 cups in 11 years. Even Michigan & Ohio St were undefeated that year ranked #1+#2 heading into their game. My greatest pain from being a die hard tigers fan wasn't 2012 World Series sweep although very painful. It was the 2013 ALCS loss to Boston. The greatest tiger team I ever saw..I still appreciate those wonderful years in Detroit sports especially now with where we are now. I told fairweather tigers fans who loved to bitch on the rise of sports radio in this area to enjoy it because I remember the 90s

One small mistake that I noticed is that the word “implied” on the Statcast vs PITCHf/x chart should be “inferred.” Also I botched the pitcher wins rule, as Verlander still could have won the game had the Tigers scored in the top of the 9th. Oh well, at least I didn't mess up an important stat ;)
    12/26 EDIT: Found one more error. Carlos Martinez, Jeff Samardzija , and Edwin Jackson have each gone over 100 MPH in the 8th inning or later once apiece. None of them went above 101 MPH. Baseball Savant's queries were being weird when I was doing the research, but now I have the full results.

      Personally, while I agree the relief pitching was awful then, I blame Scherzer for a lot of Detroit's post-season failings in that era, the dude was a playoff choke artist, so many 4-6 inning collapses happened with him on the mound in the playoffs around that time. Dude may have been a regular season all-star, but when it came to the games that mattered in the post-season , he more often than not turned out to be the opposing team's MVP

    Oh, I definitely remember this inning. It was always memorable when JV started throwing 102. He did it during his no-hitter against the Brewers, too - in the ninth inning. One thing you probably missed (and understandably so) is that it wasn't just the loss/no-decision factoring into JV's anger going into this inning. The Indians had his number like no other team for the longest time in his career. This appearance was his first against the Indians after winning both the Cy Young and MVP awards in 2011, which was a major step up for him in terms of personal performance. To be facing down losing to the Indians AGAIN after achieving the arguable pinnacle of a starting pitcher's career...yeah, I'd be pretty pissed off too.

    Watching Verlander I legitimately expected a no-hitter every start. His stuff was and is nasty, filthy - and yeah watching the MPH increase after the 7th inning was completely unfair to anyone holding a bat. Usually by the third time through a batting order, the advantage goes to the hitter - unless JV is staring you down. I"m glad he got his ring but I was sorry to see him go. They should have won it all in 2013 - if not ironically for the worst pitched inning at the worst possible time they might have.

    You asked for it: Yes, I saw it live. As a lifelong Tiger fan, I realized the badassness of this at the time. It was fun seeing JV pissed, knowing that no one was going to touch those pitches, and at the same time, knowing that he was going to take the loss, something he did regularly on a team that somehow did not score much for him. In that season he received the 4th worst support in the AL, almost a full run less than the next closest teammate. Strangely, it has continued to Houston. Maybe they think with him on the mound, they won't need to score much.

    • @brandonday2494
      @brandonday2494 5 лет назад

      The lack of run support has always been a little strange. I partly attribute it to the players standing around watching in so many games. Justin will give up a home run, but so many of his outs are strikeouts, pop-ups, and routine fly balls, that maybe it just lulls the guys behind him into some complacency. Just so much weak contact and routine outs. So many games where he just mowed through lineups with few hard groundballs or liners at all. I haven't looked at Scherzer's run support in Washington, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the same thing.

    • @claycassin8437

      It is simply because he routinely is pitted against the other team's top ace pitcher. Even the mighty Astros lineup can sputter against the likes of Morton, Bieber, or Minor. Luckily, they don't have to face four of the top five pitchers in the AL, since they all start for the Astros...but letting Charlie Morton(currently #4 AL) go was a big mistake.

    Even though this comment is hella late, I actually remember watching this very game as a kid, and I will never forget the feeling of just watching a pitcher throw out of his mind. It was like watching a predator toy with its prey. An unreal inning, and I am happy that JV ended up getting his championship ring (even though it was with the Astros 🤮)

    I just found your channel today. I live just south of Detroit and I was completely oblivious to this event so clicking this video was a no brainer. Not only was I truly blown away by the meat and potatoes of this video, and not only did I feel such an immense sense of pride (albeit nostalgically) for my team and more specifically their long time pitcher, but I was thrilled to discover this game occurred on my birthday. This is by far the best RUclips video I’ve seen all week and I hope this like and sub feels as well deserved as I intend it to be.

      Just south as in downriver or just south as in across the border in Canada?😁
      I'm originally from just north of Detroit, within spitting distance of 8 mile in Ferndale. Now I'm a "Hoosier" but still a Michigander first. And yet I've never heard of this inning until watching this video, seems like magic lost in a meaningless mid-season game

    2017 was a magical season for the Astros with that being said when I found out that Verlander was traded to the Astros I knew a world series was possible. Not only was he one of the best pitchers in baseball he was also the veteran that the young Astros needed I still believe that Ausmus was a big factor of him ending up in Houston

    Not sure if it was mentioned in the video cause it keeps cutting out on me half way through, but the start before this Verlander threw a complete game 12K outing where he lost a no hitter in the 9th inning. So I'm sure he was pissed about that coming in.

    JV was, and still is my favorite Tiger. As a life long Tigers fan, I was happy when he made the move because he served us 13 years of amazing pitching and the team couldn't deliver for him. I'm happy his career is thriving at Houston. Detroit, as of right now, doesn't deserve him.

    I remember in either the 2011 or 2012 ALDS against the Yankees he had an inning where he struck out the side on 10 pitches with 8 of them swinging. The hitters were no scrubs either they were only a prime Cano, A-Rod and Mark Teixeira. I remember thinking at the time it was the most dominating inning I have ever seen considering the opponents and the importance of the game.

    I played the sport like most for a long time in my younger years. I coached legion ball for almost 30 years. I also umpired legion ball for 20 years. I have watched the sport at the professional level for as long as I can remember. ( I am 54) I said a long time ago that Justin was the best pitcher to ever play the game with maybe the exception of Nolan Ryan. I was a Detroit fan for many years when Mr. Leyland coached the team. Notice I say that with respect for Jim. One of the best coaches in my lifetime. I learned a lot from his style of baseball coaching. I was more of a Jim Leyland fan than a Detroit fan. Give him the right team I think he could of won several rings while in Detroit. Glad he got his even though it was with the Marlins. I wish him the relaxation that he so deserves. Now to the point at hand, Justin Verlander. Like I said before quite possibly the best in history. Your stats were amazing. I knew Justin threw hard but didn't know he had done the feat that he has done so many times. This man is better at what he doe's than any machine could ever do. There is just no other way to sum this up other than the famous quote of Ron Brown. DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • @675Films
      @675Films 5 лет назад

      I think there are a few that are better (Kershaw for one), but Verlander is without a doubt an extremely elite pitcher. He's also really fun to watch.
