The Dodgers. The Sacrifice Bunt. 2019. That's what this episode of Baseball Bits is about. MLB Bunting is in decline, and has been for about a decade. But the 2019 Dodgers with a trio of Clayton Kershaw, Hyun Jin Ryu, and Kenta Maeda were prolific at the sac bunt. Why bunt? Why no bunts? These are the questions that will be answered in this episode. With the help the of Run Expectancy Matrix, we'll see why it makes sense to sacrifice bunt with pitchers hitting, but not with position players hitting. We'll talk about the Universal Designated Hitter and whether it would end the practice of bunting entirely. Spoiler alert: you may still see bunts even with the Universal DH.
Another topic I'll tackle is bunt singles. Bunting for a hit still seems to be viable, although you need the right skillset to make it happen. Finally, we'll wrap things up by exploring the strategy of the MLB extra innings rules. These rules are not traditional, but they do make it viable to bunt in extra innings. Anyways, I hope you all enjoy this Foolish Baseball production

with or without the drugs????
It is possible but not humanly nor materially possible. The ball would have to be thrown 2-3x faster than Chapman, the bat/ball would have to tolerate the velocity/impact, the bunt would have to pop up the ball and a decent wind speed to help carry the ball. So many times I’m watching a team with runners on first and second with nobody out while I scream at my TV to lay down a sac bunt. Of course that guy at the plate strikes out and the next batter grounds into a DP and the inning is over...
yep, but the nerds say this is the way
Dumb idea unless you’re trying to score only one run
@@blacksheepsoftball You prevent a double play and put an extra runner into position. I’m not expecting Barry Bonds to bunt. Giving up one out to give yourself two chances at 2 runs while avoiding a double play ball is far more preferable to what baseball has turned into. All or nothing. The strikeout rate is way too high. A productive out is always better than a strikeout
But it’s not always the ideal batter to have attempt a bunt.
The spreadsheets say no. The viewer count says yes. It's ironic the ways baseball has changed to get more wins seem to lower fan counts. It's why I love older games, especially ones with my GOAT Ricky Henderson. So much excitement. Sure it's suboptimal, but it's America's pastime, not a min/max video game run. Stats are fun for fans to go over, but they should not run the game. I can play out of the park baseball for that(and to try and beat the dominant beanball record Kofee and John set up).
As a Dodger fan, the Hedges and Betts wordplay sparked joy
"NO, you can't just intentionally get out with a sac bunt"
"Haha bunt go *boink* "
1993 American League Batting Average leaders:
John Olerud, TOR - .363
Paul Molitor, TOR - .332
Roberto Alomar, TOR - .326
But that’s the only time I can remember a trio of teammates finishing 1-2-3 in any stat.
This is very pedantic, but while they led the American League, they did not lead MLB 1-2-3. That's the difference. It's still an insane accomplishment.
@@FoolishBaseball True. I was going to replay the video to see if that’s what you referred to. I just remember that stat as a quirk because it’s so cool and was a huge reason why the Jays were so good that year. Keep up the great work - I love your videos!

Great video, but I'm pretty sad that you didn't even mention when coach Hank Hill used a series of bunts to ensure his team, The Zephyrs, took the early lead against The Ace of Diamonds and his Jewels in an exhibition softball match in 2006.
Coach Hill noticed that nobody was covering third base, as Ace's team actually only had three players. Hill had his team lay down bunts up third base line until they had a first-inning run.
Unfortunately, The Zephyr's undefeated season was ended by Ace's team that night, with a final score of 63-1.
That 2019 Dodgers team was so much fun. Led the league in walkoffs and had the best sac bunting pitchers apparently LOL.
Coming from a Brit, I love a bunt. I'm a big cricket fan, and I love cheeky singles and defensive shots, so bunt loving came naturally
Cricket is very interesting to me. Would love to get into it.
I’m sorry for you that you’re british but happy for you that you’re enjoying baseball
A few years back there was a cricket league that would play at the park down the street from my house. This is in Baltimore, Maryland, so an odd sight to say the least. I spent Saturdays for a whole summer watching them play yet I'm still not really clear on all the rules. Looks like fun though.
I'd love to see cricket but it basically registers as a zero in Canada for the sports networks. There's a city near Toronto that has a large South Asian community, so there is actually a high school cricket league.
Let's just say cricket is like an upgraded version of baseball.
The 1993 Phillies had a lineup when Incaviglia started in Left Field that had seven of the eight batters in front of the pitcher with an OPS over .800 (When Mariano Duncan played 2nd over Mickey Morandini that added an eighth batter with a .721 OPS) That gave those pitchers a lot of opportunities to move base runners along and Nails with his well balanced breakfast waiting at the top of the order to keep the hit parade going.
You bring up the 1993 Phillies? Remember those 1993 Blue Jays? Well they had the top three in AL batting average. Fake baseball news in this video.
@@adammumby8883 Nothing but respect for that team. I was thinking about the Phillies lineup versus the Blue Jays lineup and the Phillies had a bunch of players having their career years at the same time. The Blue Jays on the other hand had players who can put up numbers consistently year after year. And then they get Rickey Henderson at the trade deadline and history has immortalized how important he was in the ninth inning of game 6. Molitor and Olerud were hitting machines and Alomar was a great second baseman. (They were the three leading the league in batting average I assume.) And Joe Carter should be in the Hall of Fame. I know the numbers are “Hall of Very Good” quality but hitting a World Series winning home run I think is enough to put him over the top. If Mazeroski is a hall of famer then Carter should’ve been a lock.
@@freeparking301 they were the three and I have great memories of your 93 Phillies team, Lenny Dykstra was almost a one man team in that WS. But the glaring hole got me searching the comments.
@@adammumby8883 I remember that season well. I was 12 and obsessed. To be fair to foolish baseball, they said top 3 in baseball, not in one league, so technically the Jays weren’t that.
@@freeparking301 jays fan here. Carter’s moment is obviously one of my favourite baseball moments of all time (he also caught the final out in the 1992 WS) but he just isn’t actually a hall of famer; not even close, stats/career-wise. Lots of players (Vandermeer, Maris, Larson, etc) accomplished really cool feats, some in the WS, and aren’t in the hall of fame. That 1993 Jays team had 4 future hall of famers on it as it was, which is pretty cool. I could talk about former players who aren’t in the hall of fame who deserve to be (and guys like Delgado, McGriff, Stieb, Cone and Parker all makes the list as guys who played for the Jays, but Carter just isn’t one of them. wRC+ of 102, and 17 career WAR just isn’t even close.

Foolish Baseball used a clip with... PETER LAMBERT?! in a BASEBALL BITS VIDEO NONETHELESS?! GOAT
The extra inning rule really grinds my gears, and I'm someone open to change to baseball
I'm open to changes but that one is a bit much for me. Not a fan of the 7 inning double headers either. There's a minor league that's doing a homerun derby instead of extra innings, fucking stupid.
Baseball: you know what’s fun. Stupid gimmicks. Look at the shootout in the NHL. That totally hasn’t outstayed its shelf life and is now an irritating novelty that feels forced and contrived. Clearly gimmicks are the way of the future
The MLB: we don’t solve problems until we are legally forced to
@@fuktrumpanzeeskum the 7 inning double header is just humane. NOBODY wants to sit down and watch at minimum 18 innings of baseball, let alone play 18 innings in one day. That's like 6-7 hours of your day on the same two teams. And if either game goes into extra innings it's even longer and more tiring for the players and the people watching.
@@Jame5man shootouts in hockey and soccer are there because there is so much time not scoring, adding more time or periods of time where the players are already tired out doesn't do anything but drag out the game even longer and make it boring. At least shootouts are tense and interesting and they make a definitive winner rather than the NFL allowing ties after their overtime is up.
Shootout-like things don't really work for baseball or football though
@@stardustspark5682 i guess we've just been torturing people for the past 150+ years huh? I haven't heard players complain too much about having to play an occasional double header. They get paid damn good money to play a game for a living so even if they did complain oh well. 6-7 hours is still less than i spend at my job everyday and nothing about my job would ever be described as a game or fun or something I've dreamed and worked half my life towards getting to get paid to do. As for the fans, no one's forcing anyone to watch anything. If the game's dragging on to much for ya you can always, I don't know, change the channel. The fans at the games typically don't get to attend both games, just the one they initially had a ticket for so they're actually getting shorted a bit. And finally the employees at the stadium. 6-7 hours of gameplay plus a couple hours pre and post game for prep and cleanup isn't much more than an 8 hour work day. Lots of people have jobs that are a hell of a lot worse that involve mandatory overtime. Plus the fact that many people who work at stadiums go out of their way to get those jobs because they enjoy being around baseball.
I cried when Hyun_Jin Ryu and Kenta Maeda left the Dodgers. Not because I'll miss them, but because they went to AL teams where they'll get very few chances to show off their bunting skills.
They get very few chances anyway. They only bat a few times a week and a sac bunt requires there to be runners on base in front of the pitcher, which is not always the case.
You mentioned the dodgers great player development , you should do a video about the dodgers having the most rookies of the year of every team!
I still remember when they had like 6 in a row back in the 90's. Karros, Piazza, Mondesi, Nomo, Kent, and Hollandsworth, i think i got that right.

Bunting against the shift is aesthetically pleasing.
The first game I saw in person with the tiebreak runner rule was women's softball, where the game was 7 innings and the tiebreak started in the 10th. Visiting team's runner was out at the plate, nothing across. Home team sacrificed the runner to third; two intentional walks followed (R1 stole second on ball one). Next batter knocked home the run.

I think I love you in the most bromance way possible. Your videos are a real highlight of my life.
I like bunting. as a player, there’s nothing more lovable than a teammate who would willing give up there ab to advance the runners. I would also like to see lefty pull hitters to learn to bunt as well. The shifts in today’s game are so extreme that as long as it’s down the base line you don’t even need speed, and on top of that you would open up the right side afterwards. Also squeeze and suicide bunts are sexy.
This weekend just got a whole lot better with a new foolish baseball upload. Life is good.
I always admired the bunt it’s truly art in its highest form
Honestly I would say bunts are pretty interesting, more interesting than most plays. The ball can go almost any where and the infield has more errors than almost any other play. Anything can go wrong, and it's usually interesting when they do. Mean while a fly to out field is usually pretty tame. Either they are close enough to catch it, or not. If not caught it's almost impossible to beat the run to a base from out field.
I've been craving a return of small ball, but not a stupid return to "the good old days" but a modern form of it. Knowing how to be a good bunter can be very valuable in many situations. But one that really comes to mind is the ability to lay down a bunt for a hit with the shift on. If a batter can roughly lay down a bunt with the shift on, not only can they reach base, but they may force the defense to not put on the shift because they have to watch out for the bunt. If a slugger can learn how to lay down beautiful bunts to the opposite field I think that could really help that player out by making the defense more hesitant to put on the shift.
The hedges your betts pun was pretty awesome and I feel the need to let you know that lol
it’s only May and Foolish is already rolling. Gonna be a fun year
