    Intro:
The cells in your body are continually dividing and replacing old or damaged tissue. This is what keeps you healthy. But eventually, due to cellular stress, they stop multiplying. And, instead of being killed and cleared from your body like typical dysfunctional cells through a process known as apoptosis, they remain and release harmful chemicals that destroy or impair the cells around them. These are called senescent cells and, as you age, you get more and more of them, leading to age-related disorders like cancer, cardiovascular disease, dementia, osteoporosis, and metabolic diseases. The development of these cells is considered a hallmark of aging. But scientists are finding ways to slow down or even reverse their accumulation in order to prevent or treat age-related diseases and ultimately extend one’s lifespan.

About 10 or 15 years ago I watched a video, probably a TED Talk, and the guy was talking about life extension, and how there won't be a switch flip event that results in humans being functionally immortal, but rather a series of medical advancements that extend the typical human life expectancy by a decade or two here, a few decades there, all happening over the next several decades, and that he suspected the first functionally immortal human was already alive on the planet, that anyone who was in their 50s or 60s at that time were probably out of luck, but the younger generations would likely see a greatly enhanced life expectancy that essentially just keeps growing longer and longer, the longer they live.
It's pretty cool to see something like this, something that might just be that first small step, adding a handful of decades to our life expectancy, actually happening.
