- Contra, in New York City’s Lower East Side, offers one of the most affordable tasting menu experiences in the city, in part my focusing on vegetables and lesser known ingredients in their New York-inspired menu.

For the people complaining about the price: why don't you come by San Francisco and try out Saison, a 3 Michelin-Starred restaurant that has a tasting menu starting at $368? Its only $600 more for wine pairings.
Point is: this is dirt cheap, beyond dirt cheap for this caliber of food. I'd go twice a month if I could.
good for me I'm not american then, I can enjoy a 1 star 7 course meal with meat and fish for only about 20$ more...and a 3 star for quite less than that san francisco thing... considering the amount of food available in the us, prices are just too high...
In a year from now, this place will close because with the pandemic and the economic downfall, nobody wants to spend that much for so little food.
@@varieedeventualii -- wow, it's almost like things cost more in expensive cities, and less elsewhere... lol
@@rumblefish9 it's still open, and you sound like you never go to fine dinings
Just because something else is even more overpriced doesn’t make this not overpriced
As someone who studied hospitality for 4 years this is amazing. The design of the menu, price planing, presentation and execution of this is truly a skill and art form!
looks gross tho. i wouldn't eat it
dont judge the food by its looks.sometimes the weirdest looking food r the most delicious
DooKuu did you go to culinary school for that? because if you did you're a genuine moron
Guy goes to school to be a professional in doing something he likes, and he gets called a moron. So anyone that studies something you don't understand is a moron? What do you do that's so great?
Justin A culinary school is overpriced and teaches you 1% of what you would have learned by taking a job in a kitchen and learning from the chefs there. If that guy went to culinary school he's a moron
now they're on eater price point just went up to $150 lol
Good for them now they will be able to elevate their menu even more!
The thing about fine dining tasting menus is that all the foods have great presentation and they usually don't taste the way you assume they would. There's an element of surprise to it and it's usually an adventurous experience because you eat foods you normally would never come across. You will be full by the end of the dinner. This is also another problem, people don't understand that being "full" is already overeating. Eating enough is right, being filled up is wrong.
"Ah yes. *Sips tea with pinky out* How exquisite indeed. This meal is very interesting indeed."
Quite
the art is in the plating and knife skills. congrats
PEOPLE ITS A FUCKING 7 COURSE TASTING MENU! YOU'RE THERE FOR THE EXPERIENCE AND THE ATMOSPHERE!
Welp, this will surely be the last time you see this tasting at $67, thanks to Eater.
What exactly does the 7 course mean here?
The video format is better, thank you for listening.
Completely unrelated, but who performed the Debussy Passipied piece?
why do i have a sudden urge to eat a big fat juicy hamburger. 😡
k s you are down to earth, lol
k s I want to eat a fat long black sausage finished with a creme sauce
If you need tweezers to plate the food, I ain't eating it :D
So hot
because none of the food they showed looked appealing.
you know that you broke when you shocked when they said $62 is affordable
Boy Aditya yes iam broke with a net worth of 400 k poundstreling and i definetly agree its expensive
I don't get people who come to these videos and complain about a 70 dollar tasting menu being overpriced compared to a 3 dollar burger that can 'fill you up'. It's like comparing a 70 dollar game like Mass Effect that people play for around 50 hours to an absolutely free game like Dota 2 that the average player enjoys for around 2,000 hours. Sure the cheaper alternative has more value, but I've never met a person who wished that they had less variety in the video games they played. Same goes for food... unless they're just jealous that they can't afford it.
what is that white sauce they put on some of their dishes?
Probably some sort of puree
Isn't bitter almond poisonous??
Watching this while eating chicken top-ramen
With $67 I can eat like a king at Taco Bell, get treated like a king at the strip club for a couple hours, and have enough left over for a case of brews.
No king would ever eat at taco bell, but ok
It looks beautiful and tasty, but this does point out the New York price premium, and the extent to which hip high end places are getting somewhat divorced from reality. I went to Zahav in Philly this week, which certainly seems to tick all the fine dining boxes-James Beard award winning chef with a hit cookbook, media buzz, and most importantly unique, beautifully composed, and delicious food, etc. Their multi-course option gets you probably the best hummus I have ever had with baked to order flatbread, six small composed salads, two mezze (things like seared duck heart with almonds, spring onions, and coffee or Tuna Tartare with shishito labneh, artichoke, and spring onion), a grilled item with pilaf (I got sirloin with oyster mushroom and baba ganoush), and a spectacular desert from an also James Beard awardee pastry chef. I left exceedingly happy and quite full.
That was $45-which, it needs be said, is *still a lot* for one person's dinner before tax, tip, and any alcohol is included. That's a special occasion meal that most people would have to stretch a bit to afford. If something that costs $20 more than that is being lauded for being affordable, that may be a sign that the current intense focus on tasting menus as *the* expression of great food is alienating more and more of the population. I get that it's a great showcase for chefs' talents, and that not everything needs to be accessible to everyone, but this is catering to the rich in a way that makes the days of a focus on $30 entrees feel downright egalitarian.
Aren't bitter almonds what cyanide tastes like?
I'd eat here if someone took me. i wouldn't choose to. Fine dining is nice but I'm a dinning on a dime type gal. Though the food looks good and presentation is pretty, I also need a bigger portion. It's 7 courses but I know an hour after I'll seek out for a slice of pizza or something. lol.
a meal like this is basically 5,000 calories to the face lol... and still we got people complaining about "not enough food." americans be wildin
He came from México? Con el appellido Von Hauske, where could he have been born?
Fabián von Hauske Valtierra
Typo in comment box: "in part my focusing on"
0:50 is that a dish?
2:10 😋
Huge portions indeed .................................for a parakeet
What is the piano song in this? I must know
Passez pieds by Debussy
they say it's 7 courses but 2 of those courses are bread and 3 tortilla chips that look like they were scraped off someone's leg after falling off a bike. the steak looks good though
I can’t imagine how poorly the people who dine here must tip...
As much as I like fine dining, this is the same cookie cutter, California hippy, farm to table nonsense.
Works out to $11 each dish. All you get is a tiny blini and cheap salmon roe, shaved veg with some fluorescent oil, single slice of meat with an unknown starch. Dessert looks good though.
I wouldn't say "California, Hippy". This is New York hipster. In California, we have chain restaurants and beach diners lol.
I say you got the $ go for it! 67$ would last me all week on food!
i want fried rice
$67??? WhT a joke $14.99 minimum
is this related to the video game ?
for $67 i could get a FILLING steak dinner
I could feed my family for 3 days.
That makes it worse! lol
Please. I can get a great steak dinner for $10. But I would try that $67 tasting course. All I have to do to save up for that is bring a sandwich to work instead of going for McDonald's for a couple weeks. It's certainly more memorable.
Price doesn't equal memorable and for poor people like me, all I see is a waste of money. If you want memorable then cook your own unique dish and serve it to friends and family. I can guarantee that'll be more memorable.
There's 7 courses, by the end you are full. Yes they're small but when you combine them all together it's a lot
But no display of the current 6 course meal, disliked.
Jawesome
After this I need a BUFFET :D
They said 7 course not 6
Can you say RIP-OFF
as the portions of food getting smaller by the day..the prices are skyrocketing...this is unbelievable..
Hipster food.
Is that supposed to be cheap?
Interesting but too much cream from what I saw
Don't go out to eat if you're worried about cream of any sort. Butter, and cream, is the secret to ALL restaurant cooking.
Says Butter and Cream - "He will not divide us!"
not to the degree that's in the video though... they were using those pipettes without abandon
paying 67 bucks for a small meal about 1000 calories ! instead u can go to the grocery store and buy food suply for the next 5 days eating a well balanced meal and a total of 3000 thousands calories daily ! 67 bucks is a waste of money !
Then go to the grocery store. Eating out is for people with class
affordable ?? . when I go out to eat I'd like more than a thimble full of food .
Expensive restaurants, the only places you can spend $67 per person and still be hungry when you leave. lol
Look, you are not the targeted consumer, that's all right. You don't see a mom asking where would she put their kids in a McLaren
ignorant people, the only ones to comment on something completely unknown for them and think they are masters in the topic
Its meant to an experience for your palette
How you keep the price affordable? You portion your food like baby food. THAT'S IT. The rest is your artistic presentation which practically costs nothing if you do it yourself.
67$ is the opposite of affordable.
67 is a nice night out. for fine dining, that’s incredible
Fuck is this a tea party ?
if im still hungry after 6 courses it ain't 6 courses tho
what is this? food for ants?
That's cheap caviar because it's coloring is to light and it's to large
hahahaha sarcasm
how is $67 cheap
I know this is NYC we are talking about, but in most other locations, $67 is a ludicrous amount to spend on food.
this doesn't look like food imo
what's up with those portion sizes tho
Amna Amir all tasting menus have small portions
The tweezers used to plate the food should have been a hint.
Looks absolutelly ok when you have 7 courses.
Seriously, people who say that probably never had a decent tasting menu, I was never hungry afterwards.
You'll be full by the end
67$ is AFFORDABLE? Shame on you.
Soo overpriced.
