Because he was a natural 130/135 pounder. Everyone was naturally bigger than him once he hit 140 and up besides Manny and Marquez. Plus the hand issues
You're 100% right, his hands play a huge role of shifting from pretty boy to money Mayweather, also for a boxer to do what Floyd did, with the hands he was born with it, it's even more impressive.
If I was floyd I would have done the same thing, it's the smartest decision, but as a fan obviously everyone wants to see exciting fights. because of this I can never dislike the person for their choice, although I would like to see them go all out.

Hey man, another great video. Loving your channel. I have a recommendation. Could you make a video about how to fix boxing? I know you’ve touched on this a bit in other videos, but boxing used to be the biggest sport in America if not the world. There were multiple household names across multiple weight divisions, and especially heavyweight, and you just don’t see that anymore. MMA has more household names now than boxing, and it’s taking over the PPV crown as well. So what happened? And how do you fix it? Is it possible for boxing to have the same stranglehold it used to, and if so, how do we make it happen? Boxing has been declining since the 90’s, so if you made a video about why, and how to revive it, I’d appreciate it. It’s just as talent rich, competitive, and exciting as ever, but for whatever reason it’s just not as big. Whether that’s perception, the promoters, the confusing politics of it all, the fighters not being interesting enough, or whatever it may be. I think it would be a great video and do very well.
I love Floyd as he has mastered the single greatest concept in entertainment- people do not want the hero to win, they simply want the villain to lose. By being this cocky caricature that is INFURIATING he makes people hate him. People will pay to see if someone can finally shut him up and that's EXACTLY what he wants. Money Mayweather is legit a genius.

Ultimate Counter: Disrupting Shoulder Roll and Philly Shell 1. Initial Assessment and Positioning Observation: Study your opponent's habits and patterns with the shoulder roll or Philly shell defense. Footwork: Maintain a balanced stance with good footwork to maneuver effectively. 2. Exploiting Vulnerabilities Strategic Attacks: Angle of Attack: Utilize lateral movement to attack from angles that compromise the defensive integrity of the shoulder roll or Philly shell. High-Low Combinations: Mix up your strikes with high and low attacks to force adjustments in their defensive posture. 3. Execution of the Move Step-by-Step Technique: Feint and Jab: Feint: Fake a jab or feint to provoke a defensive reaction. Quick Jab: Follow up with a quick jab aimed at the openings created by the shoulder roll or Philly shell. Hook Counter: Timing: Wait for your opponent to commit to a defensive stance. Hook: Deliver a powerful hook aimed at the exposed side or body when they shift their weight. 4. Disruption Strategy Rhythm Breaker: Vary your rhythm and timing to disrupt their defensive timing and anticipation. Combination Attacks: String together combinations that exploit gaps left by the shoulder roll or Philly shell. 5. Adaptability and Mastery Practice: Drill this counter technique in sparring sessions or shadowboxing to refine timing and accuracy. Adjustment: Adapt the technique based on your opponent's reactions and adjustments during the fight. Key Advantages Precision Targeting: Target vulnerable areas exposed by the shoulder roll or Philly shell. Strategic Feinting: Use feints and deceptive movements to lure opponents into exposing their defenses. Versatile Application: Suitable for various striking styles and adaptable to different opponents. Floyd Mayweather only wins with the Philly Shell
This video didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. But what they failed to mention was Floyd Mayweather Sr. was more defensive minded than Roger Mayweather. So when Floyd Mayweather Jr. transitioned from his uncle to his father as his trainer it effected his style.
That's what a lot of people forget or simply don't know, The early Floyd (yes the Pretty Boy Floyd) was indeed a knockout specialist and a half. Watch a compilation video of his first 30 Floyd Mayweather fights (the Pretty Boy era) and tell me who in boxing was more exciting to watch. His first 30 fights are as exciting as Roy Jones first 30 fights. Even Manny Pac's fights. But don't take my word for it, go search for a Floyd compilation video and see for yourself. There's one compilation video I came across that is 2:39 mins long and comprehensively covers every single one of his first 30 fights.
He even talked about how also he considered his age and looking Roy Jones jr and Muhammad Ali how their styles were suited for young bodies but isn't working for them at a later stage. I'm so impressed by such a mind and of course minds around him who advice him these thimgs
His hands became more fragile as his career progressed so he could never really let them go. I also think his mobility declined rapidly so he couldn't really "dance" as much in the ring and give a sustained attack by hitting his opponent from different angles leading to a KO . After the Hatton fight, Floyd's foot work became more laboured. I even remember watching All Access and Floyd was doing some road work, and you could see he wasn't running fluidly. You could tell that he had reached that stage where your legs really seem heavy due to aging. It's a natural process but I believe Floyd changed his style to adjust. He stood in front of his opponent more, conserved his energy more and just boxed more strategically.
He couldn’t use the same athleticism/quickness as he did when he was pretty boy, so he was forced to become a complete fundamentalist. MJ did the same thing with his game.
The man came from 130 and fought at 147/154 Most won’t keep knocking people out while going up in weight , especially from that far down That’s like Inoue knocking out Crawford
Floyd was always a Defensive Master Day 1 it was the first thing his dad taught em was Defense it’s just when he was pretty Boy he choose to let his hands go more
I am a hard-core boxing (on the verge of historian) fan. Ike Williams and tito trinidad being my favourite fighters. But without a shred of doubt in any fibre of my knowledge has been the perfect (PRIZE FIGHTER) of any era, he may of had trouble with Duran in the early 80's or any member of the fabulous four. I still reckon Floyd is soooo good he would of beat them all.
Floyd ain’t beating Hearns and Hagler and I like Floyd a lot. Maybe he beats Duran and I’m 50/50 on Leonard. Hagler was too strong and Hearns was a monster. No one ever outboxed Thomas Hearns. You either knocked him out or you lost.
Good video. Yeah Floyd Marquez & Pacquiao were smaller guys fighting at welter. Floyd still had power but as you said his hands made him become more accurate more defensive more economical. He had to stretch out his career to get that 50-0. Now if you press Floyd he will step it up and get you out of there but in actual fights he tends to want to outbox the opponent and outsmart them than KO them. In sparring though Floyd is a different animal to fight night. He slept a few guys well with blistering combinations and accumulation of punishment.
If memory serves, didn't Floyd also start getting trained more by his father rather than his uncle around the mid-00's as well? (though he bounced between the two...) And Floyd Sr. was definitely more defensive-minded than Roger.
Just goes to show how smart he is you cant fight the same way you fought in your 20's into your 30's... mastered both an offensive and defensive style TBE
@@alex4k486 only YOU MayFeather loving CLOWNS would count the McGregor fight as a legit 50 🤦 I bet you Also count that COWARDLY cheapshot to Ortiz huh? 🤣🤡👍
The real answer is short and simple. His dad went to prison and uncle roger took over as trainer. Sr was an offensive minded trainer while uncle roger was more of a defensive guru. Also fighting bigger guys made it harder to have the same knockout ratio.
I like the video, only critique is it sounds like ur reading off the script to much woukd be a lot smoother if u memorized it more imo, tha KS for the good video though keep up good work.
It’s good Floyd jr develop a defensive style while still keeping his signature skill we knew him for Developing new styles helps you stay undefeated rather you stay in same weight class or move up
I would add that Bernard Hopkins took a similar career/fighting style change to preserve himself. He changed from an aggressive boxer puncher into a pure boxer.
One of the greatest boxers of all time. Love or hate him outside the ring, you cant disregrd his sheer skill inside the ring. Ive always loved defensive bizing compared to offensive and he is just in the Matrix. Everything is slow motion to him.
when it comes down to it, those hits to the head will change your life in a way that u cant reverse. any smart fighter will have nightmares of becoming punch drunk.
7:02 I didn't think this point would be brought up but glad it was. I feel this(even more so than his fragile hands) is the primary reasoning behind his style switch. I think the pressure for a fighter to win is the highest it's ever been for Floyd. His success is a blessing and a curse. Floyd being undefeated has become a part of his brand and identity so much so that a single blemish on that record will ruin it. Remember Manny Pacquiao was put to sleep by Juan Manuel Márquez and was a walking punchline/meme for years afterwards. And everyone adores Manny. Imagine how all the haters will react once Floyd finally got a loss...especially if he got knocked out.
Joe Calzaghe was another boxer who's career is like Floyd's. Retired undefeated but had a ton of knockouts early on only to have most of his later fights go to decision. Like Floyd he also messed his hands up hitting people too hard early on on his career. Just goes to show hitting really hard isn't always the best option

I’m not the biggest fan of Floyd as a person but as a fighter.. man he’s literally the reason why I’ve wanted to be a defense first fighter and why my favorite coach of all time taught defense first before offense.. and it’s funny when ppl say he’s boring to watch because if you box or have boxed before when you watch him you’re mesmerized because he’s like a wizard… but of course just like most things in life you have to do it to know it and appreciate it so if you haven’t boxed you just won’t be able to see and understand all the little nuances and things he’s doing.

Ultimate Counter: Disrupting Shoulder Roll and Philly Shell
1. Initial Assessment and Positioning
Observation: Study your opponent's habits and patterns with the shoulder roll or Philly shell defense.
Footwork: Maintain a balanced stance with good footwork to maneuver effectively.
2. Exploiting Vulnerabilities
Strategic Attacks:
Angle of Attack: Utilize lateral movement to attack from angles that compromise the defensive integrity of the shoulder roll or Philly shell.
High-Low Combinations: Mix up your strikes with high and low attacks to force adjustments in their defensive posture.
3. Execution of the Move
Step-by-Step Technique:
Feint and Jab:
Feint: Fake a jab or feint to provoke a defensive reaction.
Quick Jab: Follow up with a quick jab aimed at the openings created by the shoulder roll or Philly shell.
Hook Counter:
Timing: Wait for your opponent to commit to a defensive stance.
Hook: Deliver a powerful hook aimed at the exposed side or body when they shift their weight.
4. Disruption Strategy
Rhythm Breaker: Vary your rhythm and timing to disrupt their defensive timing and anticipation.
Combination Attacks: String together combinations that exploit gaps left by the shoulder roll or Philly shell.
5. Adaptability and Mastery
Practice: Drill this counter technique in sparring sessions or shadowboxing to refine timing and accuracy.
Adjustment: Adapt the technique based on your opponent's reactions and adjustments during the fight.
Key Advantages
Precision Targeting: Target vulnerable areas exposed by the shoulder roll or Philly shell.
Just enough punches to get the decision is an understatement. Floyd’s fights weren’t close AT ALL. Possibly the most dominant boxer ever
The fucking sound it makes when he punched sheeesh
Watching Floyds early fights he was aggressive and fast but wasn't as refined.
@Appollo Very true
He couldn’t use the same athleticism/quickness as he did when he was pretty boy, so he was forced to become a complete fundamentalist. MJ did the same thing with his game.

He was a beast back then even knockout the Big Show himself

I didn't think this point would be brought up but glad it was.
Wonderful video!
That’s probably why Calzaghe adopted that pitter patter style of volume punching that he was often criticized for. He made arm punching work for him.
