    First Tip should maybe be: Don't shoot footage that is SO super wiggly and just relay on the algorithm to try to fix stuff in post 😅

      Well I tried to use gimbal while walking but it's still far from steadicam quality so I have to use either stabilization in Resolve or use the built in on my phone. I don't know why is my gimbal so shaky while trying to just walk, not run.

      @jan.tichavsky There's probably a balance issue that you're overlooking. I did the same thing when I got a gimbal, then I realized I was overlooking an entire axis. I addressed that, recalibrated it, and it finally started working as expected.

    "Don't shoot footage that is SO super wiggly" - brillian tip......... from someone who never tried.
    As well "less shaky video == better software stabilization", is not always true. but for timelapse more opposite, while algoritms have hard time to fix minimum movements..... And resolve suck with walking stabilization, as well as any other software if movement is slow.

    This was very helpful and I love that the video wasn't super long. I get lost in longer videos.

  • @KrunoslavStifter
    @KrunoslavStifter Год назад +40

    You going to end up with a lot of artifacts and problems, depending on how bad the rolling shutter effect was in your camera and how bad the movement. You also might end up with weird sheer and tear even if some footage where it tires to lock on something and prioritize that at the expense of something else in the frame. Basically post stabilization is like post slow motion effects. It heavily depends on the source footage. I've tried all the tools on the market and they all fail sooner or later if you push them, so its best to know the limitations of each tool, program and settings as well as shooting with the post stabilization in mind. There is no magic bullet.

    i found premieres/after effects subspace warp is the much more capable and versatile algorithm for most situations, it also takes about 20 times longer usually, but since actually editing something in adobe products is and absolute terrible slow and crash laden mess. you stabilize that in premiere and then export losless to a real editing software like davinci. in some cases you can even add davincis stabilizer to further stabilize for slight improvements.

    • @drtimv
      @drtimv  2 года назад +12

      That's a fair point. I went back and forth when staging the tutorial on how deep I'd be going. Given that the modes are just algorithms, knowing the approach the algorithm takes doesn't prevent it from producing undesirable results. For this reason, I advise everyone try all 3 modes any time they want to stabilize footage. Knowing the theory behind each algorithm might be interesting to some, but for others they're more interested in results. Same thing with the sliders - since I advise most folks use camera lock, taking time to go through the sliders doesn't help the user produce better results for most use cases. Staying high level may feel like it's not a very helpful tutorial, I get that. If enough folks are interested, I'd be happy to do a deep dive to focus more on the theory as well as handling edge cases. I appreciate your comment.

    Nice introduction to stabilization for complete beginners! However, given that the title includes "Like a PRO", I would have hoped for a few explanations on how the three different algorithms work, to build up actual understanding instead of just clicking buttons (like a PRO would do) 🙃

    • @drtimv
      @drtimv  6 месяцев назад

      Fair enough - if you read the documentation on how the algorithms work you won't learn much about how they work with your specific footage, just how they approach. In the end, guess and check is the best way to approach it, or just re-shoot the footage. Hope this helps.

    When you're a newbie to Davinci Resolve - and I am so everything looks "Pro". Thanks for the tip. Probably saved me a couple of hours. My interest developed in DR when I met a guy at Siggraph in Vancouver this past year where DR (Blackmagic) had a "booth". Normally use the consumer Cyberlink Power Director 17 since it meets my simple needs. When faced with Stabilization issue on a 3 hour digitized VHS Home Video (redundant?) from 1981 the rendering on the desktop might have taken 7-8 hours (CPU i7 5930, GPU RTX 3080Ti) unfortunately the GPU failed so it was on the to the laptop - GTX 2080. Well Power Director would NOT use the GTX2080 and believe me I tried. Render time? 16 Hours. That's when your video helped me figure out how to do PRO stabilization. Wow. You clearly showed what had to be done. I thought great! The problem became evident when I realized that DR with my hardware might also take 16 hours for DR to "analyze" the footage.
    Great job explaining how it's done in Davinci Resolve. Thank you for your work.

    "HOW TO STABILIZE VIDEO LIKE A PRO"
    OMG jUsT uSe ThE "sTaBiLiZe" BuTtOn!
    Man, DaVinci Resolve has tonnes of different ways to stabilize your footage and you showed the most obvious variant. Anyone who's using DaVinci knows about this thing and actually it's pretty much useless. If you are making videos about basics, there's no need to put a "PRO" in the name of the video.

    • @drtimv
      @drtimv  2 года назад +13

      I appreciate your comment. Here are some counterpoints:
      I've worked with students who are new to filmmaking, as well as new to Davinci, and they don't have a clue where to begin with stabilization. Even pointing them to the tool, they still don't understand the workflow or how the modes, zoom, camera lock, etc work.
      This series is meant for newcomers to learn how a pro would approach a problem. "Like a pro" is different than "subject matter expert". In this case, as a pro, your goal is to manage speed of delivery with quality of output. The fastest way to stabilize shaky footage is to check zoom, camera lock, and run through the algorithms. Only if you can't get to high quality output would you need to make more manual adjustments, or potentially reshoot your footage.
      My question for you is - what were you as a viewer hoping to get out of this video? And to follow up with that, what were you hoping to achieve with your comment?

    • @phyll0medusa
      @phyll0medusa 2 года назад +12

      @@drtimv well, I agree that even such simple instrument needs to be explained. But I wouldn't name such video "how to stabilize like a pro...", more like "how to stabilize your footage..."
      Personally, I'm not a pro in DaVinci Resolve, but I use this instrument quite rarely, because it's actually useless for stabilizing a really shaky footage. It can soften some angles, but nothing more. That's because after applying it on your footage you'll get some strange stretching on edges of the image, which is very annoying (in my opinion). So, to avoid it, you should use classic stabilizer and manually set points, which will be tracked. It's harder, but it creates much cleaner result.
      What I was expecting to get out of this video? I hoped to see some new tips about this theme, that will make my life easier and help me to stabilize my videos faster. That's what I expect, when I see a word "pro" in the name of the video - some advanced things, not just basics.
      What I was hoping to achieve with my comment - I wanted to tell you, that my expectations were broken.
      And actually, I'm really glad that you answered me.

    RAW video is not real common. Do you consider RAW as any source video or is your MOV you were editing consider truly RAW? Raw video refers to unprocessed video data directly from the camera sensor, preserving all the original information. MOV files, on the other hand, can contain both raw video data (if encoded as such) and other compressed video formats (such as H.264 or ProRes).
    When you encounter an MOV file, it could be raw video (unlikely) or a compressed video format (more common). Was your MOV RAW video or compressed?

    • @drtimv
      @drtimv  7 месяцев назад

      You’re confused and overcomplicating things. In video production, "raw footage" refers to the unedited, original video material that is captured during filming. This footage has not been altered, trimmed, or processed in any way, and it includes all the takes, mistakes, and background noise. Raw footage is used as the starting point in the editing process, where it will be cut, organized, and refined into the final video product.

      Well it depends a lot on the footage you input, don't expect any miracles, the 3 modes Davinci provide are good in different situations each.

    IDK but I did not enter this video to watch trial-and-error kind of instructions 😅 I already did that on my own but I need to know how each combination / option works and what it does exactly, sorry but I didn't find this video very helpful 🙌🏼 but it might be helpful for the first-time users tho

      Trust me, understanding the algorithms behind the approaches does not remove the fact that they are black boxes with unpredictable results depending on your footage. Given that, trial and error is the most efficient approach and takes about 90 seconds to figure out the best algo for your given footage. If the theory helped with decision making, I’d teach it. But in this case, the theory is unhelpful. Go ahead and seek out your answers and you’ll see for yourself.

      I agree it might be unpredictable, but sometimes I just know the shot very well, and I know which option might be the best, then I just choose it from the beginning, I used to do this in premiere and it saves some time most of the cases.
      Anyways, I'm also new to DR and I just wanted to know the differences between them, I might be wrong.
      Thanks for your answer, appreciate it 🙏🏼@@drtimv
