  • Today we do a review and tasting of Michter's US *1 Unblended American Whiskey.
Check out the Instagram account @whiskey_marketing_school
** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
    austinwhiskyvault.com/whisky-d...
    ** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

6string42 I feel you, but I feel that's part of their chemistry. I find that part of the show enjoyable and hilarious. Different folks and such I suppose.
I don't see Daniel being a snob at all honestly. He's just super excited and passionate about whisk(e)y and it shows.

@@paulmullins4676 I mean, that’s literally the show and dynamic we all subscribed for. This channel didn’t become popular by giving obsessive, in depth, nerdy whiskey information. Rex’s roll makes the show way more accessible to new comers. If I want to nerd out, I go to the appropriate channel.

I know it is truly subjective, but I am going to have to say it’s just OK. The cream is in the nose, but it doesn’t play on the palate. Maybe my palate leans toward a traditional bourbon. I would like to try their bourbon.

Went looking for this bottle after work at a fantastic liquor store and they had every Michter's but this one; will expand my search tomorrow. Keep up the good work. Tried this for the first time a couple months ago and it immediately became my all-time favourite whiskey. Absolutely amazing. It's the sweet pipe tobacco the really got my attention. I also tried the Michter's Rye last week and it is equally amazing. Most of the other ryes I've tried have been really flat and "generic." The Michter's Rye to me has much more genuine rye flavor with nice sharp black pepper that kinda feels like alcohol burn, but it's not, and lots of warm spices.

this past weekend, I had a double-edged Mooch and BE Mooched experience. I went to a party at a friend's house, and while I know there'd be some basic beer and liquor available to the masses, I decided to bring a bottle of Weller Select and Compass Box Oak Cross. I figured I'd drink them, offer a little to friends, and take the remainder home. Little did I know that my two whiskeys would be so popular that they'd get totally drained long before the party wound down. Live and Learn.
BUT! The hostess of the party, who has an impressive Whiskey Stash of her own, not only shared some of her Green Spot AND Yellow Spot once everyone else had left, but she pulled up a chair to reach the REAL hidden secret stash where her partner keeps his Longmorn-Glenlivet 30yr. It's definitely the oldest Whiskey I've ever tried, and I doubt I'll ever see it again, but Hell Yeah, Mooched 30yr Scotch!

Hell yes! Well played, sir. That whisky label is old school, my friend. Dates back to the era where a lot of the Speyside distilleries would add "- Glenlivet" to their name to take advantage of the market knowledge of "Glenlivet".
      That's probably a $400-$500 bottle dating back to the 50's 60's

I got a bottle of this for my birthday last year and loved it. When it was gone I went out and bought another and found it wasn't as good. Maybe my palate changed, or the whiskey changed? Guess I'll have to revisit this and give it another shot.

  • @Practice88

As far as scotch is concerned, my first big introduction was the Auchentoshan three wood. But if I had to recommend a beginner's scotch whisky, I think Oban 14 or Glenmorangie Lasanta are great starters. If they're looking for a bourbon, Angel's envy is my go to recommendation. Those are typically what I'll recommend to people who are just starting their whisk(e)y journey and they haven't failed yet. Cheers.

Got to try Michter's this past weekend. Had a buddy who loves their Sour Mash. I tried it but found it a little flat.
Then I tried the American and I definitely fell a little in love :-)
Michter's was the second American Whiskey I tried that night. The first one was from a smaller distillery: Cooperstown Classic American.
I didn't sit with that one as long (got distracted by the offerings from Spirit of Hven) but I did enjoy it. I would say it's very similar to the Michter's, but I got shortbread and lemon cake with hints of butterscotch. If you're looking for another American Whiskey to try, see if you can get yourself a sample or two or ten.

Man, I haven't tried Michter's in 15 years. Watching this video piqued my curiosity again and I had to run out and get this. All I can say is wow. One of the flavors I don't care much for in bourbon is its strong cinnamon flavor and being that this whiskey is aged in used oak barrels definitely pushes all the harsh wood components (sharp tannin and spice notes) to the background. However, all the rich toffee and vanilla components are still there. I can see why single malts use used barrels. All of the smooth and mellow characteristics of single malt captured in an American grain whiskey!

Glenmorangie or HP12 (Viking Honor) - friendly Scotch.

Henry McKenna BIB or Elijah Craig Small Batch or Eagle Rare 10 - cheap daily bourbon.
Larceny or Markers - wheated bourbon
Jameson or Bushmill - cheap Irish

How about a video on Royal Brackala 16? I'm not entirely convinced on how much it costs, probably the most I've spent on a bottle (only 750ml!). However it is fairly complex (imho) fruit notes and a little herbal with an interesting oilyness. Not dissimilar from say a Glennfidicch 18.

My pick for beginner Scotch/whisky would have to be The Dalmore 12. PS I picked up the cigar malt yesterday(your fault), amazing.

I started my journey w/ Russel's Reserve. A bourbon smooth enough for the novice, but w/ enough spice & umph (that's a medical term... look it up if you don't believe me) to make it a reliable daily sipper to someone w/ a little more time in the saddle

Is that the small batch? If so I'll go out to the local and pick one up. They have it and a rye version.

Beginner Whiskey List (I'm still basically a beginner) - Four Roses Single Barrel, Buffalo Trace, Highland Park 12, Glenlivet 12, Basil Hayden, Jim Beam 8.
BTW, tried Oban 14 last week and it just had a bad funky taste. Maybe the Highland Park 12 I had first changed my palette too much.

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 лет назад

Yeah, Oban has a bit of the sea, earth, and moss in it. it's why I love it, but it's not for everyone.

I went to Black Rock whisky bar in London and tried Michter's US*1 toasted barrel, barrel strength straight rye. I had a mouthgasm. It's seemingly out of stock everywhere in the UK; a limited run. Any suggestions for a similar bottle that's available or where to get a bottle of it?

I'm new to whiskey, but find I like Wild Turkey 101 and Knob Creek small batch. How will Michter's American fare with these whiskeys? Love watching you guys and have learned a lot from you two... and Grandma also... Grin

    • @JuiceRobot
      @JuiceRobot 4 года назад

Ok... Ok... I guess I will answer my own question. I bought a bottle of Michter's US *1 Unblended American Whiskey, and I have to say that this whiskey is the smoothest whiskey I've ever had. I'm thinking this fifth will not last as long as I had hoped. Grin.
I've had the following whiskeys and my preference ratings precede each whiskey.
      (1) Michter's US *1 Unblended American Whiskey
      (2) Wild Turkey 101
      (3) Elijah Craig 12 yr
      (4) Knob Creek small batch
      (5) Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey
      (6) Buffalo Trace bourbon
      (7) Bulleit Straight Bourbon
All are great whiskeys, but my new favorite is Michter's US *1 Unblended American Whiskey. Of course, as always, my preference may change over time, after all, I'm a noobe to whiskeys.

Is there a difference between the 'bourbon' and the 'American whiskey'
I have a bottle of the 'bourbon' love it. I'm a scotch drinker.
Also what does the 'sour mash' add or remove?

I will have you know that I share a composite of your beliefs which lead me to sometimes agreeing wholeheartedly with your unique viewpoint, and sometimes disagreeing, alongside unique viewpoint. In order to share my enthusiasm about such a relatable yet unrelatable subject, I must first inform you that I too have a large... knowledge of the situation and that I am especially unafraid of facilitating discourse in order to found a level of shared understanding.
