  • Today we do a review and tasting of Dalmore 12 Year single malt Scotch whisky and compare it to Monkey Shoulder and Port Charlotte Heavily Peated.
    Check out the Instagram account @whiskey_marketing_school
    ** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
    Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
    austinwhiskyvau...
    ** What's with the necklaces?
    Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
    See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
    Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
    Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
    ** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
    Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
    Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
    It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
    ** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
    Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
    The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
    ** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
    There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
    Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
    There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.

    I love Richard Paterson too. Another cool fact about him is that he helped design the Glencairn glass. It's hard to believe you via doesn't mention all the dark fruit notes in Dalmore tho. I get a lot of plum, grapes, red apples and raspberry. Love that stuff!

    I blame you guys (in a good way) for my new obsession with whiskey. I had been given a bottle of Crown Royale Reserve some years ago and had never opened it till just a few weeks ago. Then I tried a MacAllan 12, followed shortly by purchasing a bottle of Dalmore 15. Thank you for opening my mind and tastebuds to the world of whiskey, and damn you at the same time!! Keep the awesome videos coming!

      Do you also find him... a bit annoying? He's probably a great blender, and he's a great personality, but there are like 40 videos of him doing the exact same whisky tasting routine, and he never explains any of it.

    • @adriangrzemski
      @adriangrzemski 7 лет назад +10

      In some videos he explains why he does this thing with glass, smelling few times and so on. Also, he not always throws away whisky - he omitted this step with Dalmore 50 :)

    • @tdolan500
      @tdolan500 7 лет назад +1

      Peter Schumacher I low key don't like him at all. I think some of the stuff he does is bizarre and is counterproductive for creating whisky drinkers.

    • @TheBioethicist
      @TheBioethicist 7 лет назад +2

      It bothers me that he has 50 videos of him greeting his whisky three times, but I haven't seen anything where he explains why. If you look at Highland Park's channel, they have a video about whisky-tasting, and he explains it right off the bat. It was so refreshing to lose all the bombast for unpretentious information.

    I decided this weekend to expand my collection by another two bottles and picked up a bottle of Monkey Shoulder and Bruichladdich Port Charlotte Scottish Barley Heavily Peated. I tried the PC last night and the Monkey Shoulder today and have to say, in my limited whisky knowledge, that both of these are damn fine. I don't have much to compare either to, only having one other whisky of the two regions, Speyburn 10 for the Speyside and Laphroaig 10 for Islay. The Port Charlotte is definitely less aggressive than the Laphroaig and will probably be what I use to introduce my friend into smoky whisky when they're ready, but I going to have to do a side by side of the Speyburn and Monkey Shoulder tomorrow to see which one I prefer.

    Daniel and Rex, Dalmore 12 is the first scotch I ever tried and enjoyed. My Dad is a Speyside lover. My brother loves the Islay whiskies. The peatiest whisky I can do is Highland Park. To follow up on the Clearance Discounted Compass Box from the Pennsylvania State Stores:
    I am way into the Oak Cross, and went back and bought two more bottles. The Orangerie and Peat Monster I can see the appeal of, but I'm mostly treating them like an occasional novelty for now.
    Thanks again for the recommendation, and as I slowly learn more about Scotch, I discover there's so much more than just the overwhelming burnt bandage punch to the face that I got with my first Scotch ever (Talisker... I told my friend to "surprise me", and she sure as hell did)

    I got a bottle of Dalmore 12, and I didn't get much smoke off of it, but I got a lot of dusty leather and cloves. I actually *braces for hate * didn't really enjoy it? I wonder if I got a bad bottle or something. Maybe I should order it at a bar and see if mine was off or something.

      Ok so i have spent the last 45 minutes going back and fourth trying to decide which is better. I agree with Daniels assesment on the 12 but it is way too close to call...so i blended them...2 parts KA3 and 1 part D12 and you have the perfect Dalmore. You get the fruity sweetness up front from the 12 and the better finish on the back end from the KA3

    It’s strange, I had the Dalmore 12 straight and it tasted like fig newtons! Then I added some ice and it immediately turned to Black licorice! A few sips later and it turned back to fig newtons. I was also smoking a cigar, so that might of changed things. Either way I loved it. I’ve never experienced that flavor profile in any other whiskey before.

    Where to begin with this one?
    1. Octomore is 200 not 400.
    2. I like pop music but not E150a
    3 I am not fancy. Rex might be
    4 4th review in sounds right maybe 5th
    5. In my area the 12 is 60 vs 35 for monkey shoulder
    6 I always have a Dalmore 12 on hand it's okay
    7 Fun review as always
    8 bunna 12???

      1. I have 5 different Octomore's. They vary wildly in price. The one we were pouring was $378 when I bought it. The others were all under $200.
      2. Iggy pop?
      3. Rex is very very fancy
      4. never telling
      5. that's about right
      6. me too
      7. of course it is!
      8. hell yes. on the list for soon.

      The coloring has for most nothing to do with fancy (or being a snob]. There are people who don’t like additives. You guys mention in the video that it doesn’t affect the taste so why would it matter adding the colorant. You can also turn it around; why add it while it doesn’t improve the taste? Adding stuff not to improve the taste, but to make it look more older? Oh, wait... to make the product look more fancier? 😉. Personally I don’t mind. Understand why people don’t like it though.

    Just tried my first glass of Scotch Whiskey. Not much of a Whiskey drinker, but have lost my taste for beer, sort of. Thought I would give Dalmore 12 a try. My first impression hasn't gone so well, I am somewhat saddened by this. I will pick it up and try again . There was some things I liked. The roasted coffee taste was pleasing, I was overwhelmed by the cinnamon but disappointed I was unable to taste the fruits or sweetness. Is there anything I can do to dring out the sweetness? Jason Alexander
    1 hour later: Never mind I have drank another glass. I'm getting some smokiness, orange and some cider or apple taste . The cinnamon died down some and coffee is still there. Interesting.

    As someone from farther west in the US than you guys, I gotta correct you: panning (as in panning for gold) is not the same thing as using a sluice, which is a gate for controlling the flow of water (such as down a sluice box, which has various levels that allow the gold to fall to the bottom before the water drains). #nerdtime

    Just wanna throw this out there, dalmore 12 and monkey shoulder is pretty popular and can be found at stores where the sell it at state minimum like Meijer, Walmart and Kroger. Here in Michigan monkey should is $35 and dalmore 12 is NO LESS then $70 at those stores and I’ve seen it marked up at smaller liquor stores. Just saying they are not in the same price range, in Michigan anyways.

    your videos are entertaining as usual but i was wondering if your can or are willing to do a top 5 or 10 choice for blended or single malt whiskeys from a certain region. not saying you should do one soon but maybe for a special event like obtaining 10K subscribers. i would like to say out of many of the whiskey reviewers on yourtube your is by far the most entertaining. thank you for all your effort on your channel, and Rex AKA "Darth Mooch", i mootched an entire bottle of Highland Park 12 from my friend because i said i wanted to try some Scotch! So thanks to you guys (and my wife's displeasure, yes I am passing the buck to you and these 9000 like mind individuals) my collection is growing faster than Rex requesting Macallan M. As my piggy bank of whiskey grows it appears to be attracting more and more wild Mooches that congregate in my bar on Friday evenings. My only saving grace (for now) is that they are yet develop palates for the smokey and more complex Islay Scotch. So my question is, when you have the distillery up and running are you planning on distributing to Australia? And between now and then what are my chances of getting a sample of the BLENDAGEDDON, I mean a tube sock in the post?
    May your glass only empty so you may have another.

    • @FightStealDrink
      @FightStealDrink 7 лет назад

      We actually have a meeting about distribution with a heavy hitter later this week. The distribution company is waaaaayyyyy out of our distillery's league, but we called in a favor and will be asking all the questions we still dont have good info on - like international sales. fingers crossed.

      Rex that's awesome to hear and I look forward to the opportunity to get my hands on some of Rex's finest "Technically Whiskey". Otherwise I suggest as a lesson in Moochism where we establish a whiskey exchange program where I send you a fine Australian bottle, and you take one from Daniel's collection and send it too me. You end up mooching a whiskey and I break even, Just don't tell Daniel.

  • @pewheretic7967
    @pewheretic7967 7 лет назад +7

    There's obviously no standard for the definition of a Dad Joke. I think the tribe has become many and varied and we're picking sides based on who we think is the best parent :) Rex is permissive and fun-loving, but Daniel is strong and authoritative. Chad's probably the best of the bunch but I just can't bring myself to think about that threesome :(
    (I sided with Daniel. In the end, his rule is law)
