    tonight is the second night I've had the 8 year, I remain firm that I prefer it to the 16. I also noticed that this is the first whisky that I have found the ash note that you have mentioned. I am an Ardbeg cultist as well as a Laphroaig fan and have not noticed this in either. Fantastic job as always!

    I use spiegelau glassware, definitely a fan . This whisky has more candied, sweet flavor and less of a prolonged & pronounced nuance than the 16yo imho. The 16yo is mossier and distinctively robust, with an earthier finish as opposed to this candied representation that presents itself more pleasantly all around. As a daily driver the 8 cannot be beat

    9:56 "Damn Canadians and their witchcraft!" (I actually got the canadian Gelncairn glasses because of this, and they really do make whiskey taste smoother somehow (for the not-so-smooth whiskies that is)) It's definitely witchcraft. Confirmed. 100%.

    Damn, even sweeter than the 16? I already found the 16 to be sweet. Can't wait to try the 8.
    The glencairn is focussing the whisky on your tongue while the Canadian glass is allowing it to spread out more hence the smoothness.

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 лет назад +5

      I would agree with that glass analysis, except the Norlan has the same glass diameter at the opening and nowhere near the same effect. Too weird.

    • @jonlatham7963
      @jonlatham7963 5 лет назад +1

      @@WhiskeyVault I was wondering if it has something to do with the fact that your nose is in the Canadian glass whilst you drink and your nose is preparing your mouth for the alcohol ( the same way you body sends endorphins when it expects an impact)

  • @Sixx28
    @Sixx28 7 лет назад +14

    A) I believe the "Canadian" glasses in question are manufactured by Glencairn as well.
    B) I would be interested to see you guys try the Reidel Whisky Glass and/or NEAT glass.

    • @FightStealDrink
      @FightStealDrink 7 лет назад +7

      That's interesting. I wonder if they have some Glencairn voodoo that they're sprinkling into the glass designs. Now we have to compare 40+ whiskies across their glasses to be sure.

    • @charlieghague
      @charlieghague 7 лет назад +6

      You're correct. The Canadian glasses are made by Glencairn as well and designed specifically for drinking Canadian whiskey. After doing some research, I think the wider base and mouth allows the liquid to spread across the mouth better making it smoother. Whereas the standard prob concentrates the flavors more. But that's just an opinion.

    Lagavulin never disappoints. I got lucky when I went to my local state store and found they were out of Lagavulin 16 but they had Lagavulin 8 in stock so I bought a bottle. As good as it was I felt hardly anything compares to the 16. Glad I got to try something different because of a chance circumstance. Great review gentleman hope the new distillery goes great. Send some product to the chalet premier in North lima Ohio please :)

    Watching the back log of videos and this has to be one of my all time faves. Love the glass comparison and I think it was also the first time I ever got a comment read.
    I had completely forgotten they did the 8yo. I wanna get a bottle before it's gone so I can compare it with the 12yo 200th anny. This one seems way more tame than the cask strength 12yo, which is still a very heavy, robust whiskey even after watering it down.

  • @gman5986
    @gman5986 3 года назад

    Yes I agree with Daniel. Think of enjoying a nice wine. A thin glass just feels so much better for appreciating the flavor profile than a thick heavy glass. Just something I noticed over a period of time drinking spirits. A nice IPA also the same in my favorite Belgian thin glassware.

    I’m with you on the Laphroaig 8 and I’m totally with you on the Norlan glass. It’s uncomfortable to sip from. It’s too fat. Great nosing glass. I am disabled and as a result, end up in bed at at 6:30 pm every evening. I always have a whiskey or four before sleep. In the morning, the glass will be dry but the whiskey nose is still there, minus the alcohol. Every whiskey leaves a different trace. To use this trace, the glass has to be totally dry (no residue). Use the unwashed (but dry) glass and fill with a different whiskey. Do this with something heavily peated and then use the dry, but unwashed glass with a light Speyside. Try also with peat and an Oban 14, to kick the Oban’s peat up a little bit.

    Had the lagavulin, and idk, to me its very light in the beginning (of course also in color) and even the smoke is quite light to me. At least the smoke sticks around so that if you're eating food with it, it really improves how the food tastes. The finish is sweet with a sherry note to it than any minty note. No iodine or brine in the scotch.

    The little cups I made were the first hollow items I ever made on a torch. Therefore, there is zero chance that they were ever part of a bong. I've never made a bong. Besides, if you guys were current on your cannabis terminology, you'd know that the word bong is now fairly obsolete. Today, they use pipes and rigs. I've also never made any pipes or rigs although you'd never know it by the glass artists I follow on Instagram. Thanks for featuring my little Toad and Ostrich cups!

    5:26 the quicker evaporation is part of the idea. That's why the glass of a Glencairn is so thin. With more evaporation you get more fragrance.

  • @OneOfThem

    Funny story: I actually bought one of those Canadian glasses when I first started getting serious about whiskey. Coincidentally this was the same time I started watching whiskey vault. It was mis-labeled as a glencairn at the liquor store I got it from and I saw the word glencairn, and knew that was the whiskey vault official glass, so I bought it without a second thought. It took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out that it wasn't actually a glencairn.

    I've always wondered what the Norlan glasses were like. It always looked too big and bulky for me, personally, and I don't think I'd like the ergonomics either. Glad to hear I don't have to spend money on one now to find out I don't like it. On the other hand, I gotta get a Canadian Glencairn now. I've always passed on them thinking it couldn't possibly be any different that the standard. But you say different?

    • @FightStealDrink

      Whiskey Vault What makes you say the glencairn is better? I'm just curious. I own the glencairn and only recently heard of people using the copita

      It's just an easy reference point. I like the small copper still style bulge in the lower half that allows some of the alcohol fumes to stay behind during smelling. Really they're both great and bring different aspects of the whisky forward.

      Cool, thanks for the info. Keep up the great work guys. Also maybe review the Balvenie 21 year portwood or the Highland Park 18? Unless you already have. I'm torn on those 2 for my next bottle

    The two things I don't like about the Norlan: a) The fat lip, which feels like I'm drinking from a porcelain coffee mug. b) Too dainty and lightweight. I prefer a little heft in my whiskey glass.
