    Welcome to Whiskey Vault. Where two grown men smell their own hands and on occasion drink whiskey.

    I received my first Glencairn glasses in the mail today! Relatively speaking, I'm near the beginning of my whiskey journey, but I'm extremely grateful to have this channel to both guide and entertain me as I become a fully fledged Whiskey Person. A few months ago it was just Jim Beam with coke, or Jack Daniels if I was feeling fancy!

      I’m a beginner here too, and want to order some glencairn glasses myself but just haven’t pulled the trigger. As a beginner have you noticed a difference, big or small, on the taste and nose. Thanks

    • @Christian_from_Copenhagen
      @Christian_from_Copenhagen 5 лет назад +4

      @@mattbparrish565 Huge! They are worth every penny. But it's worth exploring with more than one kind. One whisky that smelled too strong of alcohol in a glencairn was completely mellow in my rocks glass.

    • @WarButler
      @WarButler 5 лет назад +3

      @@mattbparrish565 The difference in smell is pretty incredible! The taste itself is unchanged, but I think the extra intensity of the nose serves to heighten your perception of the flavours. While I can't identify individual notes yet, I noticed much more complexity. I also find the Glencairns to be very ergonomic; you can swing them all over the place, confident that not a drop will the spilled.

    • @BW-pr8qr
      @BW-pr8qr 5 лет назад +2

      @@Christian_from_Copenhagen I agree! Glencairn's are great, but I noticed especially at higher proof (cask strength), the nose can be overpowering for me in a Glencairn. For the strong stuff, I actually prefer a small wine glass.

    Just picked up this one. 16 is the gold standard of Lagavulin Islay, most everyone would agree- This GOT 9 is not far off and certainly quite enjoyable. I'm currently out of 16 to compare but I do intend to do this SXS by the weekend. I have not had the 8, but there is an 11 that a friend says is totally worthy if you can find it.
    I picked up this and the Oban, since I have had no Oban to this point *my sophomore year chasing Scotch* and my god! I LOVE the Oban! It's amazing.

    Lagavulin is one of my favorite Scotches. It is my favorite Islay. It may sound sacrilegious to some, but try taking a 16oz coffee mug, add two scoops of your favorite hot chocolate, pour one and a half oz of Baileys Irish cream in, stir well, add heated milk and one and a half oz of Lagavulin 16 year old. I call it a Gaelic Blessing. The smoke and chocolate work magic together.

  • @MrPatwag
    @MrPatwag 2 года назад

    Just picked this up as my first Islay thanks to Amazon Prime Day. Not so sure about it thus far, but it did take me half a bottle of Mezcal to fall in love with that and my initial reaction to Mezcal was far worse than my initial reaction to Islay Scotch. I get the smoke every now and then and love that, but for the most part get burnt rubber.

    Before I started watching the whiskey vault I was a bourban guy. Cask strength when possible. And I loved them all. Most other whiskeys I didnt really like as much. Being Canadian I can drink canadian whiskey and all that stuff rather easily. The original crown rye you didnt get to actually try was probably the best Canadian I've had. The only Scotch I've had were blends or cheap and not to my liking. Except for one cocktail a bartender friend I had from a restaurant I worked at a few years back. And it was really smokey and amazing. But I could never remember what was in it. Years later I find you and start learning about whiskeys around the world. I was intrigued! So new years eve I went to dinner and decided to have a whiskey with my meal. When the Som starter listing the amazing list of whiskeys names kept jumping off the list. Memories of reviews and longings for the whiskeys you were trying came together. The Somm knowing my experiance with Scotch decidedly informed me not to get my choice. But I had decided. I was trying an Islay. laphroaig Quarter cask caught my eye. So I ordered my 1.5 oz poor of laphroaig Quarter. My first Islay. With no liking for scotch. The bartender pretty much begging me not to order it. So I get it. The crystal glass almost sparkled in the purple led grow lights shining off the top of the bar. It was a magical moment. All of a sudden doubt started washing over me. What am I doing. Starting my delve into scotch with a laphroaig. It landed at my tableside. I took a deep breath. And picked up, what at this point I was sure was going to be the last scotch I ever tried. Slowly I brought it to my nose and inhaled. My life will never be the same again. The smoke the depth, I was overwhelmed with a perfect aroma that almost made me drool on the spot. I put it down and just looked out into space. When my girlfriend asked what was wrong, all I did was smell it again and tenderly bring the glas to my lips. Tasting the most amazing whiskey I had ever tried up until this point. Instantly I ordered some distilled water and a straw and throughout the meal explored every drop of that glass. It was incredible it brought me back to that bar with my friend and I knew I had had an islay that day. Even at the end of the meal after a smoke I went back and had my final sip. And all of a sudden the laphroaig tastes like the nectar of the gods. sweet gentle and like that perfect tender first kiss to end an amazing meal, it was over. And I will never be the same again. Thank you! Thank you so much for introducing me to an amazing thing. I cannot wait to send you a whiskey that will change your lives as much as laphroaig changed mine!

    8 is the most aggressive lagavulin in my opinion, why it's also my favorite. The 9 is more aggressive than the 16, but far closer to it than the 8 imo. Have to agree with Daniel sir on this one. The 2018 version of the 12 had a lot of the same notes as the 9 just turned way up.

    The past few years of Jazz Fest Lagavulins are some of the best whisky they have made, IMO, especially for a NAS. The last Feis Ile bottling (18yr) is "quintessential" Lagavulin, like the 12yr but even more refined. As far as the core range goes: 12yr > 16yr > DE > 9GOT > 8yr.

    Love your videos guys. After several videos lauding Lagavulin 16 and 6 months trying to find it locally unsuccessfully. I bought the 9 thinking as a Scotch noob its going to be "almost the same" lol... seriously I have shared the 9 with about 25 people most of which are scotch fans and everyone has the same reaction. This is the most revolting distillation I've ever experienced. It tastes like a dying cat with dysentery dragged its ass through an ashtray.... this bottle will last the remainder of my life......

    hey: on ice.. i like some ice/water to smooth out things personally.. but what do you think about cubes vs spheres.. my 2cents is i'm digging the 'big spheres' because it seems to cool & 'melt slower' (less water) which is evening things out without watering them down too much (ie watering down less because of the shape..).. maybe its just hype: any empirical evidence (or opinion) around this from a Sommelier? I know y'all are purists preferring things neat, but maybe there's a video in how water (and/or ice cube shape) changes the profile of a whiskey....?

    How many Sommelier levels are there?!
    Real question though, how to you get to a level of being able to detect EVERY SINGLE NOTE in a glass of nice scotch or whiskey? I mean, besides drinking an exorbitant amount (I'm currently working on this part...), what can you really do? Is it just time and "practice"? Asking for a friend...

      I'm not sure it's possible :-) Over time, you get better and better at picking up notes and nuances, but it just takes repetition. But it can be completely affected by time of day, what you ate or drank before, etc.
      In general.. practice :-)

    Is caramel a function of barrel aging or is it more malt related (i.e. the whisk(e)y mash contains crystal malt)?

    OK I just finished my first bottle of jameson and I think its sort of mild, I see so many videos of you talking about laphroaig 10, and I do like the odd punch in the face lol. So my question is should I go for laphroag 10 or lore first. Cheers

      bitbrace Lore or triple wood. Full on Laphroaig 10 will taste like a burning hospital after that Jameson. Ease on up. The often mentioned Monkey Shoulder is a step in the right direction. Just my .02.

      Taste like a burning hospital that's funny, I will get a bottle of Monkey Shoulder also, in case I wont drink the Laphroaig lol but I must have Laphroaig it's stuck in my head. I am a jump in the deep end kind of fucker anyway lol. may I ask what's your favorite whiskey is, if you have a single favorite that is. Cheers

      The 10 and quarter cask would be the best way to dive right into the wonders of Laphroaig and wouldnt put a huge hole in your pockets. Personally i wouldn’t recommend getting the Lore at all

      Why not the lore you just don't like it, Daniel and Rex made it sound like the best of Laphroaig little more smoke and wood and still a Laphoaig peat taste but less iodine or burning hospital taste lol like the other guy said, sounds good to me

      bitbrace It’s just a matter of preference. The Lore is definitely easier to drink compared to most other Laphroaigs. Drinking scotch is a very personal experience, dont need to take reviews too seriously
