Today we taste and review Game of Thrones Dalwhinnie Winter's Frost House Stark and compare it to Dalwhinnie 15.
Note to self: idea for a cocktail. A bloody mary using all of the GOT whiskies, named: the red wedding
You can use just the Singleton and the Dalwhinnie to be honest :)
@@mihailmanev5358 that sounds much better than ruining whiskey.
OR you could name it "the fucks a Lommie?"
Hey! My name is Christian, and I actually just turned 21 on Monday. I have been watching your videos since early in December, and to be brief, I have been very excited to start trying whiskey. So Monday I bought monkey shoulder, and I must say I was not surprised when the burn was overwhelming. I was disappointed because I know how much more there is to the drink than I could experience, but I have to thank you two and your two channels because I am not giving up! I have started tasting it on the rocks with a little sparkling water. It’s much more bearable and I think a great way for me to start my journey into whiskey! Your saying “the best whiskey is the whiskey you enjoy, and the way you like to drink it” has already given me the confidence to keep going and not being ashamed from not enjoying it neat. So thank you! I’m excited to stay tuned to your channels!
They said something at some point that was very helpful to me for getting flavors past that burn. Sip it like you're taking the first sip of a hot coffee. No need to fill your mouth with a shot. Basically just get your tongue wet.
Happy Birthday!
Just get hammered with his key until you get tired of it, then you can start to appreciate the taste.
These guys convinced me to buy Monkey Shoulder when I turned 21 (Of course I had been drinking before then). It's so good, but it can be challenging for starters. Keep trying. Maybe try some easier ones before. My starter Scotch was the Dewar's White Lable my dad always kept around.
Monkey shoulder is very malty with a harsh burn but goes great in cocktails,e.g try it mixed over ice with Drambuie give it a stair and enjoy. The cocktail is called a, Rusty Nail. Keep venturing you'll soon find your favourites, as you are starting off Glenfiddich 12 is a perfect single malt to try. I've been drinking whisky since I was 20 am 32 now and I still buy Glenfiddich 12 as a nice light whisky although the Glenfiddich 15 is one of my top 5 whiskies. Just stay clear of 2 blends that are Bells and teachers whisky, vile they are however people still enjoy it. Hope this was helpful, enjoy your whisk(e)y journey.
I was a bourbon drinker only, love the sweetness the history everything about bourbon, I had only tried the usual scotch and Irish whisk(e)ys so I wasn’t a big fan, after seeing this channel for over a year, I got curious and got myself a bottle of ardbeg and red breast, I fell in love with red breast right away and it took me a while to get into the ardbeg, but now I love it also, glad you guys got me out of that “bourbon” shell.. salud from South Texas
Rex is on his best behavior when he's doing the videos people are searching for.
Peter Schumacher Discovery content Rex 😂
It was more fun hunting down all the GOT bottles than drinking them.
Yes, please do the video on dominate flavor whisk(e)ys to help develop an understanding; I think that'd be awesome!
House famous for "Winter is Coming" motto, plays Vivaldi's "Storm" from his Summer Concerto. Well done gentleman.
Trueee lol. Storm is so good tho
To be fair Rex. Your broken dry week was because YOU had established the absolute strictest adherence to the QC regulations so when Daniel moved his dates you subjected him /us to a Rex month - shutter- turn about is just fair play
You’re not wrong Christina lol
Fact.
Dominant flavor whiskies would be a good tribe video.
That slow-mo pour was the most beautiful thing you guys have ever produced
I absolutely love this stuff, ran out and bought a second bottle the night after I tasted it.
I agree with Daniel, Stark should be something a bit more challenging. Maybe a Highland, but cask strength would have worked a bit better.
Okay, whisky pouring into a glencairn set to Vivaldi's Summer!
Magnificent pairing
That Chef's Table homage at 0:34 was a nice touch.
"I have a Vice Chancellor now. I have the time."
So it begins!
That was my favorite quote haha. Also a pretty badass thing to be able to say.
House stark should have been Wolfburn, Would have made sense in taste as well as the wolf stuff.
The Dominant Flavor Profile video is a great idea!!!!
I second the request for example whiskies that have dominant flavors that can be used to help train the palate to notice said flavors when they are more subtle.
No... dry week doesn't necessarily need to be the schedule, as long as it's done.
And you, Rex, WILLINGLY tested something you knew might be alcohol, unlike Daniel who did spend the requisite week, just offset by 24 hours, similar to mine this time around.
I had to stay strong not drinking whisky. Glad, that you guys help me in dry January with awsome videos to pass the time. :)
My thoughts about this one: They bottled the Dalwhinie winters gold in an other shaped bottle with a GoT Brand and 💥 bam, it's a collectors item. Winters Gold is the NAS Whisky from Dalwhinie and the cheapest from the core range. Maybe I'm wrong but i don't think so.
That's what I was coming on to say as well.
You're right.
Ok, but is joe rogan getting one, cause yall need to be on his podcast for sure
Edit: talking about the bastards blend
Yes a JRE with these 2 would be a dream come true
That was the first thing that came to mind. I’m waitin for it.
Will Brent ugh joe rogan
Rogan would offer them ice lmfao
@@thomasbuck303 Joe: "Whiskey yeah... that is cool. You guys ever do DMT?"
The Dalwhinnie GOT is good whisky, but a Clynelish might have been better suited for the house of Stark. I loved Daniel's reference of it a man on horse who happens to a own a house. And Rex's notes of Honey Crisp apples and honey are spot on. Cheers to great drams!
That "dominant flavors" video is exactly what I need.
I've only had about a dozen shots of Whisky in my entire life at this point and between Crown Royal, Viking Honor and Laphroaig, it seems like Whisky just gets easier to drink the more "challenging" it is. Thus far "Peat" is the only discernible flavor that isn't "Alcohol", if it's possible for anything else to be flavored as much as Laphroaig is peaty, then I need to try some of that.
yes please, for the dominant flavor video, things that are accessible and is a good representation... for example, i wanted to know the "medicinal note", and remembered that laphroig was heavy with it, so i figured i'd go for it, got it, tasted it, and it tore my head off, but i liked it, and think it'd be a great flavor note in lesser quantities in other whisk(e)ys, and i'll absolutely be able to pick that note out in anything i taste from now on!
Hey guys, watched the Cardhu video today. Here is an amazing blend with Cardhu 12 i recently tried: Five parts Cardhu 12, Three parts Talisker 10, and Two parts Laphroaig 10. Sláinte!
Johnny Walker, white Walker. That's a whiskey I would like to see a review on.
I second the dominant flavor whiskey video.
You guys are awesome. I have learned a ton more about this craft thanks to you guys.
Have you guys reviewed Jack Daniels single barrel rye & jack Daniels Frank Sinatra
I was unprepared for such an epic pouring montage. It was brief but beautiful😍
Holy crap... that dramatic pouring and music was brilliant.
No spoilers! Hear! Hear! 😁 Good on you Rex. I also hate spoilers. I'm actually just about to start Game of Thrones myself. We just got Hulu last month and I found out it's all on there. Very excited.
I see that Johhny Walker has a "Whitewalker" whiskey now. Do we know if they have an exclusive deal with Game of Thrones or are other makes in on the fun? I was thinking that JW owned the ones you've been reviewing, but I may be incorrect on that.
Thanks guys.
Johnnie walker is owned by diageo, as are all the single malt distilleries that did the great house bottles.
The new bell bit, I dig it.
Dry week!. Glad this vid is 5 years old i missed that.
Yeah, I'm the same way when it comes to spoilers, Rex. I've been responsible for several conversations coming to a grinding halt because I was avoiding hearing or giving spoilers and I didn't want to leave the room 😅 and yes, trailers are way too spoiler-y nowadays...
As for the whisky, I got it for my dad for Christmas because House Stark is his favorite. It's definitely super friendly because a lot of people he drank it with said it was really smooth, but I still found enough things to enjoy in it.
Daniel I have never watched the show either,(I have a little en') but the books are amazing. I know you are somewhat of a bibliophile so you should check them out.
The greyjoy whiskey looks the most interesting
After recently trying glenfiddich 12 at a bar & really enjoying it I decided to buy a bottle but after having some from the bottle I bought I was really enjoying it I know Daniel has said what you have before drink or food changes what you currently drink but I was wondering does the environment you drink in change it to, thank you guys for all the laughs whiskey talk & just general good times guys keep up the good work
I got exactly what you described on the winter’s frost. Minus the floral notes. But what would you say is the floral note that Rex got?
Always a pleasure to watch your reviews, glad about this one since I have the Stark bottle and tried it but didn't think a lot about it. However, I never added water to it so clearly that is what needs to be done on my next dram of it to see if it comes alive a little more. Slainte
Im up to date. What am i supposed to watch now?
I also think a dominant flavor episode would be a great idea
P.s are you guys gonna review Kavalan Soloist sherry or port cask? I mean, hurry up and do it.
The 15 is perfect as far I know. And the Winter's Gold I liked also. 👍
I think I would have preferred something a bit smokier. -Daniel, on whisk(e)y
So, at a liquor store that i just started going to they apparently have a bottle of Macallan M priced at $4,699.99. I wouldn't have noticed it on my own because i was looking at the bourbons. Then some 60 year old guy said to me "you should get that whiskey there" and pointed at the $4,699.99 price tag in the locked case in the Scotch section.
Daniel’s description of this house makes me want to watch Game of Thrones!
Dominant flavours episode is a great idea 💡 I would love to see that, also after some very good written reviews online I purchased a bottle of Glenmoringie Signet and was blow away! Would love to see what you guys think, l love the videos guys keep em coming, cheers 👍
Daniel's GoT explanations make my eye twitch. LOL
I agree with Rex, this scotch goes down very easy and does seem like it was made for the masses... which isn't a bad thing. I took the bottle over to my brother in laws on Christmas and he isn't the biggest whiskey drinker but he enjoyed it, which was great cause I didnt have to see him pouring another glass of grey goose lol
Here's a tidbit of useless knowledge..... wolves enjoy scent rolling into spilt whiskey.
Some of the digging I did on the GoT scotches, apparently the Dalwhinnie "House Stark" IS supposed to be just Dalwhinnie 15 but repackaged. The Chardhu "House Targaryen" and the Royal Lochnagar "House Baratheon" are also just repackaged. But the other GoT scotches are distinct, bespoke vintages.
You two make wish I liked Bourbon, Scotch , Canadian and Irish Whiskies . However I personally go for neutral grain spirits ( I am ashamed to admit). I live in Kentucky and the best clear liquor I ever had came out of a half gallon mason jar 25 plus years ago. Yehaa from East Ky view 3726 like 414
Mostly love the islay smokey ones like Ardbeg, Lagavoulin and BRUICHLADDICH. But sometime i tend to like the more non smokey ones and specially Highland park and the viking editions, have most of them and love them but there is one that i haven't and it's the Sigurd. Have you guys tried it and if so is it worth the 150$ and shipping it will cost to send to Sweden?
What dalwhinne is this the most comparable to?? I just had this winters frost and it is my first dalwhinne. I love the smokey notes.
I cut my teeth for whisky on a Dalwhinnie 15, it seemed quit smoky to me at the time, but that could have just been my lack of experience.
Daniel likes kicking back with whiskey, a cigar and a book. Just read the books, Daniel. They're far better anyway. (Not that the show isn't fun. There is just no way it can include all of the information and sub-plots).
Absolutely love the channel.
I've got to say Texans have the best laugh in the world!
Bro, try vat 69,it's dirt cheap blended scotch, but better than many expensive whiskeys.
Spoilers don't exist for me. Like, you can tell me details about something and it will not change my interest level at all.
Big game of thrones fan, I'm gonna have to hunt these bottle down. Thanks for an great review yet again.
Hey y’all!!!
I have been binging for awhile and watched almost all the videos now.
I would like to know about all the no-name airplane size bottles you find at the stores. Are they MGP experimental blends or something else? I usually don’t search for the larger bottles of them since I typically use them for when I just want to take them to add as inexpensive mixers at parties.
October 12th happens to be my birthday. I might have to use that as a convenient excuse to head down there.
I hate this trend of putting out non age statement like this one and over priced limited collectors edition whiskies with creative names. Ill stick to the bottles that actually tells you what to expect
WHOA is that whiskey wash story what was referred to in the How to Slay a Whisk(e)y Mooch episode?
Great episode! Thoroughly enjoyed it. Here's an open question for you guys... I have a modest collection of Scotch, Bourbon, etc., and recently I am not enjoying the Bourbons, more and more they are tasting harsh and unpleasant, but I'm enjoying the Scotch an equal and opposite greater amount. Thoughts? What the hey? I wonder if you guys have experienced any sort of (short term) shift like that while sampling good bottles of various whisky?
Cheers!
Raster, I'm currently having that exact same shift. And can not explain it either. I do know that the longer I'm in the Scotch swing the more expensive this will get. I do know Scotch seems to have more fruity notes that I don't get from American Whiskeys that I like. If you find an answer let me know.
I'd guess you're getting used to malt while bourbon is made of corn. Before I got into scotch I thought bourbon tasted like sour apple, now it tastes like cherry and Wasabi
How about Masterclasses on different whiskies.
I'd love for you guys to try Redemption Bourbon.
I got a bottle for Christmas and have enjoyed so far.
I thought their Rye was great for the price!
Do the Johnny Walker white walker if you are doing got, debating buying and would like to see your opinion :)
Daniel touched on it, but this is the reason Dalwhinnie was chosen for House Stark:
*House Stark’s resiliency, strength and ability to thrive under the most intense situations are greatly shaped by Winterfell’s frigid temperatures. Dalwhinnie, known for being one of the highest distilleries in all of Scotland is cold and remote much like The North where House Stark calls home, making the two an iconic pairing.*
Your Oregon whiskey donation is going to appear on this Friday’s donation day!
@@WhiskeyVault Oh man! I can't wait! And that happened a lot faster than I expected!
I would've used Highland Park for House Stark because you know...the north
Sparq Meister I said the very same thing !
Small Problem with that, Highland Park is not a Diageo Brand.
Yeah has to be a diageo brand.
Re-watching this. This was only last year? What happened to Rex?
If you have it, ive been trying to figure out if the House Stark bottle is a repackaging of Dalwhinnie's Winters Gold?
I love all of your episodes there really funny and educational but so far I've never seen an episode about really inexpensive whiskeys like anything under $20 why is that and is it just something you guys don't like or anyways if you need to see an episode of really inexpensive whiskeys
The north landscapes
At least he pronounced Stark right. Also is Rex trying to out somm Daniel this ep?
Awesome use of Vivaldi...
Question for you guys: how much time do you spend on your beard maintenance? Cause damn it, everytime I look I get jealous that I can only grow whiskers...
Is there any plans for a Red Spot review in the future ?
Congrats on 157K. Are your whiskies able to be ordered?
Donavan Hunsinger You can buy online but due to Texas law you have to collect from the distillery.
Trailers are mini no context movies now, hate them!
Yes.. and the worst one are comedy trailers because half the time the funniest parts are in the trailer
Should try these on ice and see what happens. Just saying.
WBSE did their inaugural meet up that day in 2018.
Good One! Can't wait to see GOT this summer... Yes
Hey guys... Could you review Oban Little Bay please?
0:35 for shame Chad. You should have used one of the winter movements rather than the 3rd summer movement.
Gettin’ it tomorow.
I was wondering, I know you can go to the wizard academy to become a level 3 somalia like Daniel but I was wondering if there was any courses to become a level 3 mooch like Rex
Daniel should watch Game of Thrones 1st episodes and drink some of those game of thrones wiskeys...
is this worth the $100 price tag?
House Stark - 'The Gentle Spirit.'
What happened there!
Dalwhinnie 15 is a solid dram. It's even a bit smokey. That "Winter's Frost" is probably just the core range bottling named Winter's Gold. Sean Bean does not approve!
Will you guys be live streaming the October meet up for those who cannot attend?
Hopefully in some fashion!
It will blow ur mind as for sure
Daniel, use the title Keeper of the Books. Much more Game of Thrones/ D&D
Hey I'm still new to whiskey mostly drink Bourbon but I tried some Scotch. Mcallan 12(matured in Sherry Oak cask), Glenlivet 12, and Dewar's white label. Personally I didn't enjoy any off them, hard to describe my issue best way was it just tasted stuffy. Dewar's being the worst. Is there anything else I should try or would you say I'm probably not a scotch person. Thanks for any information
Start with Irish whiskey first such Jameson, Hell-Cat Maggie, Bushmill’s Red Bush (aged in bourbon barrels), Tullamore Dew, then Powers & Redbreast if you’re turned 🙃
@@_Michael_Scott thanks for the suggestions I'll let you know how it goes
But does it taste good?
I'm the exact same way with trailers. If i already know about the movie i don't want to see any trailers. I'll leave the room, shut my eyes, and sometimes plug my ears. Trailers show to much and i hate spoilers.
If it needs to be atleast 40% to be classified as a whiskey, why does Jack Daniels make a 35% whiskey?
Different countries have different minimums. Likely that’s an Australian release
I'm bummed for it being on October 12th since that's the same day as the A&M vs Alabama game in College Station. Ughhh
That happens to be my birthday which make give me a great excuse to attend.
But Rex... Daniel already spoiled the show😂
Sounds like this one has a bit of the too light impression that the Winters Gold has compared to the 15. Though it does sounds more interesting than the Gold.
what is going on Rex? You're letting Daniel only pour one glass of the comparative whisky to share, instead of demanding your own.
Let's be honest, if you haven't read or seen game of thrones by now, you don't care about spoilers at this point.
And eddard had it coming for being to stubborn to stick to principal with all the threats around him
