Love the show! As a beginner I would say the lagavulin 8 was the best entry level scotch for me. Finally had the 16 and it stands on a class of its own. Pro tip for beginners, if you’re a strong coffee drinker (espresso) or no sugar, lagavulin will taste like heaven.

I'm a 62 year old woman who can't tolerate much alcohol, but fell in love with Lagavulin 16 first time I smelled it. Had gotten it as a Christmas gift for my older son. My first scotch and pretty much first whiskey to just drink, after cooking with Woodford Reserve. Goes absolutely wonderful with rich, creamy desserts. Lagavulon 12 is my second son's fave, but my older son and I like 16 over 12.

I bought my dad a bottle of Lagavulin 16 a couple years ago and I mooched a taste. I hated it. It hurt me so much that I thought I'd drank something toxic.
Flash forward two years and I'm sitting by the campfire sipping a glass of my own Lagavulin 16 and sharing some with my mooch of a father.

“If they don’t know what they’re asking for, you don’t pour them Lagavulin.”
My story with Lagavulin 16 is actually the opposite.
I had a friend with a pretty nice bar cabinet, but he was primarily a rum drinker and did not like whisky, I however did, though I thought that I didn’t like smokey whiskeys. He offers me a drink from a bottle he got from his dad, and I drink it not knowing what I was going into - I loved it! From then on out every time I visited everyone else would drink their rum while I would have the whisky all to myself. Only later did I look the bottle up and was very surprised that this was indeed a very smokey whiskey, one that I might never would have accepted if I knew what it was when I got the offer. I now primarily enjoy smokey islay whisky and I have Lagavulin 16 to thank for that.

I’ve been sipping bourbon for a few months now, but my friend who is into scotch poured Lagavulin 16 for me after Monkey Shoulder. I had no idea it was considered a heavily smoky scotch. Glenfiddich 12, Balvenie 12 doublewood, Glenlivet 18, Lagavulin 16, Ardbeg 10, Chivas Regal 12, Macallen 15 and Oban 14. This was over the course of 3 days but I had no idea what I was in for with the Lagavulin so this review helped me understand some of what I was tasting. I appreciate this channel tremendously as I’m from bourbon country here in KY 👍🏼. Thanks guys

Guys, got to this vid after watching and enjoying many of your reviews. I want to say thanks for describing that lift in the Lagavulin finish that sometimes is reminiscent of mint. Often times I get wintergreen, but you guys nailed it. To me, now it is a "nondenominational" mint!! Did Glenfiddich's. Found nothing special in them, so gave up on Scotch whisky and moved to Bourbons and Irish.
Tried Lagavulin 16 a few weeks back and wham! Holy shit I couldn't believe whisky could taste like that! Tried Laphroaig today, along with Cragganmore and Balvenie.
The others were nice, but like you said, there's no coming back from Laphroaig.

It was I think the fourth Scotch I'd ever tried, and only the third single malt, so I'm just glad I stumbled upon it quickly. I literally bought it at random, because I wanted to try something new, but had no idea about regions or anything like that when I got it. One sip and I was hooked, and that's when I started to get really serious about learning about Scotch. I only tried Lagavulin 16 about a week ago and pretty much started watching you guys the next day. I have mainly been a bourbon man with Laphroaig 10 being a favorite Scotch and a monkey shoulder hear and there. I bought $1000 worth of Scotch Whiskeys in a week to try and this is living, so many flavors its an experience. The Lagavulin 16 really threw me on first tasting it was a bit of a roller coaster of flavors but in a good way though I couldn't pick them all and it will most likely take me a while too do so, however one flavor I got straight up after thinking on it was like i had burned a stick in a fire getting it nice and charcholed white hot and then dipped it in brown sugar but still didn't seem to pin point what i was tasting. after watching your clips for a week and learning I tried it again tonight and it hit me that the tast I was getting was a perfectly charred marshmallow on a smokey burned stick. IT WAS AWESOME! Thanks guys keep up the great work.

I started exploring whisky in the later part of 2015 (I feel like a fool for not discovering whisky before then)... and I've watched all of Ralfy's videos (great way to learn), then all of LiquorHound, then all episodes of "Scotch Test Dummies" then everything in that time frame from Whisky.com (Horst and Ben)... Very recently I started watching your episodes, starting at the beginning...
Just now, I came to realize something important about you guys (Daniel, and Rex). With a little bit of build-up to my main conclusion, I have concluded that Daniel is generous, he is actually a kind fellow. Daniel doesn't give that impression at first, but after about 100 episodes, I think Daniel is very generous, very kind. His basic goal is to share his knowledge with the audience, and here we see him being extremely generous with the whisky. I don't see a mean streak in Daniel, he laughs a lot, he doesn't seem moody... Rex on the other hand...
    Cheers!

I tried this for the first time at the weekend and it actually blew me away. It was so smooth and complex compared to other whiskies I've had. Definitely need to invest in a bottle (other two)

Lagavulin was my first ever straight whisky.
I chose it because it was the highest rated one in the price range and everyone seemed to love it.
I also fell in love with it and now have been on a whisky journey that has lead me to Japanese whisky as my favourite, but Lagavulin is still the owner of my heart.

I love it; I've been drinking scotch almost a year and although I havent tried many distilleries, Lagavulin 16 is my favorite scotch to have on hand.
Once or twice a week ill have a 1/3 of a glass and its amazing. It's smoky and peaty, but not as strong as say laphroaig. It has a really nice crisp finish, and its incredibly smooth. I would say its smoothness reminds me of johnny walker blue, but its about half the price.

You guys crack me up. Just to be extra snobbish, it's headspace not "air space" when referring to the air above a liquid in a container. Just bought my first bottle of Lagavulin recently - love it.

Watched a lot of your episodes, but this one made me subscribe. Not cause its special over the others but because I'm drinking a bottle of Lagavulin as I watch this and loving it. I would describe myself as an intermediate whiskey drinker edging into advanced perhaps, but havent been able to get past peated scotches until now. I'm drinking the Lagavulin Distillers Edition I got yesterday and am starting to see past the peat, as it is matured in ximenez casks, which for me is good as my first scotch was Macallen. Im loving this and want to see you guys do a review, curious if Im right about it being more approachable than the Lagavulin 16.

I'll say this, I'm an experienced craft beer drinker, but historically I haven't had much whiskey, I was convinced to try Lagavulin because I had JW Lees Lagavulin Cask Aged Harvest Ale and it was fantastic. I bought the 8 year and really dug the smoke, but found the 16 to be even easier to drink than the 8, so it's interesting that you say it's an intermediate level whiskey, because I've only had like three varieties of scotch ever, and I immediately loved it/got the appeal.

Thank you so much for explaining the ageing in the bottle! :) I could bet my Bowmore started to taste like shit in the end. It was open maybe 6months and it tasted so good when In1st opened it. But then when I had like 1/3 left there was no flavor left. :( Have to add this to favorites to remeber this rule. I also have a Lagavulin 16 sitting right next to me, will open it with friends!

Hey Daniel hey Mooch have you guys ever used Wine Preserver to keep your whiskey from being exposed to outside gasses. Its a mix of pure nitrogen n2, carbon dioxide c02 and Argon Ar. It lays down a cover of sealing gasses on top of the whiskey to prevent exposure to outside gasses that change a whiskeys taste as the bottle is emptied and its volume changes? It comes in handy especially if you have a expensive whiskey your trying to preserve it's original taste and condition. You can buy it online at amazon or in wine shops.

I've had whisky here and there in my life, Glenmorangie 12yr is still the staple at my parents house. Used to quite enjoy that, now not so much. Always seemed to prefer single malt over blended, though I didn't really explore the blended side too much honestly.
Lagavulin 16yr was the first scotch I bought for myself, which I did in April '19. Cost me $120AUS and at first, I wasn't sure what to make of it.
Now that the bottle is almost empty, I love it. Fantastic scotch, I only wish I could afford to buy more of it without hurting the wallet.
    Student life.
I want to get myself a bottle of Hibiki whisky, which I had once at my old school and it was a lovely drop from memory, but it's about $150AUS or so per bottle and it isn't the most commonly found bottle where I live, which of course makes the risk a lot higher that perhaps I wouldn't enjoy it.
Maybe at christmas I'll make the splash.
