  • Ah yes, sixteen. The magic number of Scotland. Not 15. Not 17. Right on the money. The gents try Laphroaig's venture while comparing to the classic 10 Year and a Lagavullin 16.
Thanks to Patron Saint Sam Gallimore for the bottle. Praise be.

To me it smells a bit like a roller skating rink that held birthday parties during the 90s where the parents smoked cigarettes inside. Absolutely beautiful.

I'm always reminded on the smell in the one breakfast place where I grew up that refused to cave to the non-smokers. There was a thick cloud of cigarette smoke hanging in the air, mixed with the smell of bacon and sausage.
But, the roller skating rink is a great one, too. I can totally remember that.

My Islay journey thus far, has been, in chronological order: Laphroaig 10, Uigeadail, Corryvreckan, Ardbeg 10, Lagavulin 16, An Oa.
When I got to the Lagavulin, at the time, I felt it was a little too subtle for my tastes. But as I've been going back and forth between those aforementioned bottles, my appreciation for the Lagavulin grew. I doubt I'll be able to source Laphroaig 16, but I'll keep a weather eye out.

For the decanter infinity bottle, make sure the decanter isn't a lead glass bottle, or lead will leach into the alcohol and give you lead poisoning. Lead glass is relatively safe if you use it for serving, but not for storing (keep it under 2 hours).

Aaaaah the boiz finally noticed Emma's mark. We gotta flood the vault with donations of older Islay bottles to compare so they keep checking.
I was just thinking about this kind of comparison the other night - while younger Islays tend to share some commonalities, would older ones also tend towards a particular direction? Makes me wonder if the master distiller/blender at Laphroaig simply picked barrels that would take that 16yr in a similar direction as the Lagavulin.

I have a question about proof. I know nothing about distilling other than the basic concept of how it's done. What happens as a distillery if a whiskey comes out of the aging process at a lower proof than the distiller wanted? I assume if it's higher than wanted it can just be proofed down. What about if it's not where the distiller wanted it?

I'm commenting on my own comment which I have absolutely no recollection of writing. The reason I'm doing so is because I really fancy a bottle of the Laphroaig 16 which I still haven't tasted. I'm still amazed that the price remains reasonable in an age where whisky prices have reached fantasy levels. I have independent Laphroaigs in the bunker with some age and a 25 year distillery from years past but I want a reasonably aged contemporary expression. Looks like it's time to bite the bullet.

@@donoimdono2702 way too rich for my wallet. The 18 was great and fairly reasonable in price. I'm willing to go up to the ~$120 for the 16 if it is comparable, but that's about my limit for a bottle period.

@@donoimdono2702 I tried a pour of the 27 year this week. It was good, but not worth the money to me (I don't regret purchasing it though). If the 18 and 27 were available at the same price, I'd prefer the 18.

Having recently tried Laphroaig last month for the first time, I am stunned that people drink this stuff on purpose and then have the gonads to claim tasting profiles like "fruity" or "wood". Stuff tastes like a band-aid that got pulled off of a burn victim. :)
