  • Laphroaig distillery was officially founded in 1815, although rumor say that the brothers Alexander and Donald Johnston actually built the site in 1810, when they started farming in the area. However, distillery dates in the nineteenth century, especially the early part of the century, should be taken with a pinch or two of salt.
Laphroaig is consistently the highest-selling Whisky on Islay, which is particularly impressive when you take into account the fact that the Whisky has such a distinctive and strong flavor.
We were allowed to visit the Laphroaig distillery and got exciting insights that we don't want to withhold from you.

I like the Google Earth animation at the beginning of the video. A simple way to give us a sense of the distillery’s location.

The sherry cask was a great addition to the core range.

I love Laphroaig Quarter Cask, it's one of my all time favorite Scotches. Lovely peat, sweet and smoky but less medicinal and a finish that lasts forever.

Laphroaig absolute best value next to Bowmore for the 10 year. Never regret buying a bottle, and never will

The most consistent malt from Islay; certainly my favourite, and unlike several others on Islay, still (relatively) affordable.

I had the chance to work with a scotsman a few years ago. His name was Jason King. I asked him about Scotch Whiskey. He told me the best was Laphoraig. The way he said it...sounded to me like Lafrog. But I researched it and bought a bottle to try. Wow, it was everything he said it was. Such a peat taste, rich, powerful. A unique and great single malt whiskey. I will always have a bottle. I wish that I could drink a few shots with him. But for now, I put it above the Irish whiskies that are so smooth. For special occasions. Cheers to all.

Laphroaig has always been one of my favorites and look towards every occasion when I can pour a dram (or two). One of these days I hope to visit the distillery to see this liquid gold being made.

Met Pamela a while ago and always thought both she and Ben would get on together. Good to see it happen

Thank you Ben for your work on these distillery visits. You're pretty goofy and make me laugh sometimes with your stereotypical Dscherman bloke antics. Keep it up, sempai.

Getting it into the US market in 1908 is both pre world war 1 and prohibition, so those wouldnt affect him getting a start in the market. No doubt WW1 would affect sales, and prohibition decades later would as well.

Are the 3 48% ABV bottles non-chill filtered? If they are, why does it not say it on the bottle? I heard that the 18 year old might be coming bacK.

Imho. Quarter Cask is their best offering.

Definitely. Basic 10 is too watered down, it should be 46 % no doubt. I understand it’s their pure commercial offering but definitely not best value.

Seems lazy and ungenerous of the Laphroaig to offer basic GA drams as part of the tasting.

Love Laphroaig for it’s medicinal taste. All others are yes, peaty, smoky, but don’t have such iodine punch like Laphroaig. Not everybody likes it, but that’s fine, nobody will touch my goods then 😁

My mom always sneakily sips all my whiskey bottles dry, but refuses to touch this one simply based on the smell alone.
