First time i did that was with a nice white wine, 2013 Aubert Chard, it was beautiful but the glass note was caramel, honeycomb, lemon zest, and just a hint of cream, it was really wonderful
At about 9:45 where Daniel talks about how a whisky can taste so different from day to day depending on what you have drank or ate, I literally felt that in my soul. here about a month or so ago I had the pleasure of trying Ardbeg Uigeadail for the first time and about half way through the bottle it started to REALLY pop with those treacle and bacon notes as advertised but there was also this weirdly awesome Ovaltine/malted milk kinda vibe that I have been chasing ever since.
Besides the fact that I apreciate all the advice an insides, I really enjoy the interaction between you to, and the pure enthousiasm for the whiskeys, thanks 😁

I've always loved when brands test how crazy they can make something for no other reason except "because they can". Never even tried this much less owned a bottle, but my b-day is coming up in a few weeks and I might have to splurge now. Any to recommend? There's like 10 different ones. I've also heard if you let it oxidize in the bottle for about a month, it gets even better.
I'm with Jimidrammer on the peat/smoke thing. I associate peat with moss, dirt, earth, wet forest, and vegetal flavors. Smoke is that woody, ashy, smokey thing. I find with Ardbeg 10 you get a lot more of the peat influence with a little warm campfire off in the distance. With Laphroaig 10 I find I get the reverse, with a big ashy beach bonfire up front with the vegetation taking back seat. The Octomores I've had usually skew more to the peat first flavors.

I had a Caol Ila the other week and enjoyed it immensely, but tonight, its pinning me down and slapping my face, and the ridiculous thing is, I'm enjoying it!!
I completely agree with this. Usually I really love Octomore. When we did the video on it, I thought I was going to have step outside and sit down for a moment. But overall, it's amazing how every part of the moment can change a whisky experience.

I haven't done that on purpose, but our bottles have rested. I haven't noticed it made that much of a difference. And I disagree with the water assessment. But then again, it's all subjective, so who cares :-)

I tried Octomore at Whiskey On Ice, and this makes me sad that I couldn't spend a significant amount of time enjoying it. Even the little taste I got, it was special.
Might be hard to translate to people who don't brew, but you can get cherry smoked, beechwood smoked and peat smoked malts. Brew them in beer and they taste nothing alike (although anything more than a tiny amount of peat in beer ruins it). After distillation, the peat is much toned down, the harsh acrid taste goes away, but it is still very distinct from wood smoke.
The break at the 3:40 mark and Daniel going "Now that you're done with that..." afterwards - made it seem like Rex actually had to go choke the chicken, lol.
I just ordered a bottle of the 08.3. It will be my first .3 Octomore after trying a couple of the .1's Sadly though the bottle has been delivered I'm stuck at work for about another month.

I didn't really drink neat whiskey before and stumbled onto the channel when ya'll were doing the advent piece. Question: Daniel on more than one occasion has mentioned that you can't fake age. Which brings us to my question, would it be possible to accelerate the aged effect of whiskey in the barrel with the addition of pressure to force the liquids into the wood? I'm just curious if there's been such a thing attempted. (asking out of sheer ignorance) p.s. Rex is pretty alright too I guess.
There are certain things you can accelerate and certain things you can't. For example, the moving of whisky in and out of the wood that gives it color can be faked by pressurizing the whisky off / on or by using smaller barrels for a higher wood to liquid ratio. But there are certain chemical compounds that as far as we can tell, only occur with time. It it's those things no one has figured out how to fake.
What do you guys think about doing a whiskey shoot out for whiskeys grouped by price point? grab a few whiskeys under 50 bucks for one episode, 50-100 in another, so on and so on. that way when I get paid next week I'll know which 20 dollar bottle I can buy.
Noob questions: Is it necessary to keep bottles in those marketing tubes (or boxes) once they've been opened? I'm just now getting into a few adventures with brands that have them and my first inclination is to get rid of them, but maybe there's a technical reason not to?

So the new Bruichladdich Octomore 8.3 is an incredible 309ppm, I'd be very interesting to know if the peatiness is just overpowering at that point, even for peat lovers.
Question: Can you please purchase of bottle of Glenlivet 18 year old? Please? This is my favorite whisky out of the (just under) 200 bottles that I've tried. I just looked at your listing of the bottles in The Vault, and there's no mention of this one. If you do not totally enjoy the heck out of The Glenlivet 18, then I will offer your money back. By the way, it is one of Horst Leunings absolute favorites also. He has the choice of a lot of whiskys, so for him to rave about this one means something. Cheers!

I have recently tried Highland Park 12, Highland Park dark Origins, lagavulin 16, Laphroaig 10, and Balcones brimstone. I am finding that I really like the Smoky whiskeys gentleman. Where do I go from here? Ardbeg Supernova or maybe bruichladdich octomore?

When I tried to go for a really ferocious smell, I got a note, that I can't really name, but I just want to smell it for the rest of my life... I started smelling it gently, and it was sweet, apple fig, meat bbq sauce, then I started inhaling with a bit more force, and alcohol hit me, then I tried to inhale with almost all my force and got that note

Hi guys. Im a complete novice when it comes to whiskey. However im looking for more than just drinking and instead want to learn to understand and enjoy what im drinking. There isnt really much choice of whiskey in the pubs by where i live in the UK. Can you possibly help in respect to both how to understand all the differences i might taste/smell but also how to choose which bottles to get. All help and ideas welcome. Thanks again. Russ
Russ, honestly there are so many directions to go on this, there's no real right or wrong one. My recommendation would be to start a habit of trying every whisky you can find in the pubs, one at a time. Add water if the alcohol content is to intense, but add it only a few drops at a time until it's just right. Eventually you can add less water. As you work your way through what's available, you'll learn about what you like, and you'll find that you raise your threshold for high alcohol content. Good luck!

After checking out Angels Envy, I found out it's distilled by Midwest Grains Product(i think that's the name) and found out they source tons of whiskeys for tons of companies, and you can get their recipes to make your own. what are your thoughts on how to tell when a whiskey brand is truly making something new versus being basically identical to another brand?
Yes. We've talked at length about MGP in videos past. I've found that the variances in aging, blending, and grain blends create such different whisky, you'll have a really hard time getting two to taste the same. And that goes for stuff being made at MGP as well.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but pretty damn sure the regular port barrel finish bourbon is distilled by them. Their Rye Whiskey is def is sourced from MGP though. They have a cask strength too I think they distill themselves as I haven't seen an MGP cask strength before. Look for something about being distilled in Indiana on the back of the bottle. Sure fire way to tell it's MGP. Though it's not a bad thing as MGP makes great whiskey.
Yes, the rye is mgp, but I think the bourbon is produced by Louisville Distilling Co where Lincoln Henderson was master distiller since 2005. I may be off on details, but that's what I heard.
O.K so I think I should say that I'm only 19 at the moment and I can not wait till I turn 21 and buy my first whisky bottle. So if I can get a suggestion of a introduction, intermediate and advanced level, I do have 2 years of saving so a budget is really not problem, is there any suggestions?
All the whisky. Actually last night I had Talisker 10 with a steak and seafood dinner, and it changed it's character at least 3 times during the meal. Amazing.

Oh man, this is an amazing thing to figure out. I haven't found one yet, but if there is one, I'd guess it's either a Signatory or a Duncan Taylor. The search is on.
Independent bottlings are often cask strength, natural colour, an unchillfiltered unlike many Official bottlings which distillers attempt to keep consistent from batch to batch. Therefore there are wide ranges of taste. Many are fantastic but some can be lass than good. Always check whiskybase or whiskyfun before buying an independent bottling or any bottling for that matter.
Hey guys i have been watching your video's for about six months now and I was hoping you could help me, i fell in love with islay because of bowmore, i jumped right to laphroiag and was wondering what you would recommend trying next and if there are any bourbons that are smokey like islay scotch.
In terms of the amount of smoky/peat flavour, how does this compare to Compass Box's Peat Monster. I have tried the Peat Monster and described it as licking an old man's pipe. A strange way of saying I loved it but that's what it reminded me of

Octomore runs at about £100 here in Scotland, $200 is about £150. That's a big difference even for an expensive bottle.

Speaking of different smoke profiles, have you ever tried Iron Smoke Straight Bourbon Whiskey? They apparently use Apple wood to smoke their grains.

I have recently tried Highland Park 12, Highland Park dark Origins, lagavulin 16, Laphroaig 10, and Balcones brimstone. I am finding that I really like the Smoky whiskeys gentleman. Where do I go from here? Ardbeg Supernova or maybe bruichladdich octomore?

Colkegan - a Santa Fe whiskey - aged with a wood you might recognize. spicy! - not my favorite but a sure recognizable taste if you like Texas BBQ
When I tried to go for a really ferocious smell, I got a note, that I can't really name, but I just want to smell it for the rest of my life... I started smelling it gently, and it was sweet, apple fig, meat bbq sauce, then I started inhaling with a bit more force, and alcohol hit me, then I tried to inhale with almost all my force and got that note

some bottles are badly constructed so some drops run down after pouring is it just me that always licks em upthey wont get away with me
The coating technique from whiskey watch seems a lot like Richard Paterson's recommendation to put some whisky in a glass then throw it out. You should compare, because science

Never thought of "Gangrenous Band Aid" as a tasting note.
What I'm finding interesting is that you two are excited about band-aid and phenol, when I'm used to those being unwanted in craft beer tasting.
Those flavours become much more subtle once distilled.

Hi you recently suggested the Bunnahabhain 12 to me. But all I can find here in Norway that I don't have to order is the Bunnahabhain Toiteach Islay Single Malt. I'm wondering what's the difference between these two and how dose it stack up compared to the 12.
Ouch. It's completely different. Extremely peaty. Still amazing, but not subtle.
Octomore is easily the best whisky I've tasted. Especially for the price. I get it in the UK though

Hi guys. Im a complete novice when it comes to whiskey. However im looking for more than just drinking and instead want to learn to understand and enjoy what im drinking. There isnt really much choice of whiskey in the pubs by where i live in the UK. Can you possibly help in respect to both how to understand all the differences i might taste/smell but also how to choose which bottles to get. All help and ideas welcome. Thanks again. Russ
Russ, honestly there are so many directions to go on this, there's no real right or wrong one. My recommendation would be to start a habit of trying every whisky you can find in the pubs, one at a time. Add water if the alcohol content is to intense, but add it only a few drops at a time until it's just right. Eventually you can add less water.
As you work your way through what's available, you'll learn about what you like, and you'll find that you raise your threshold for high alcohol content. Good luck!

After checking out Angels Envy, I found out it's distilled by Midwest Grains Product(i think that's the name) and found out they source tons of whiskeys for tons of companies, and you can get their recipes to make your own. what are your thoughts on how to tell when a whiskey brand is truly making something new versus being basically identical to another brand?
Yes. We've talked at length about MGP in videos past. I've found that the variances in aging, blending, and grain blends create such different whisky, you'll have a really hard time getting two to taste the same. And that goes for stuff being made at MGP as well.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but pretty damn sure the regular port barrel finish bourbon is distilled by them. Their Rye Whiskey is def is sourced from MGP though. They have a cask strength too I think they distill themselves as I haven't seen an MGP cask strength before. Look for something about being distilled in Indiana on the back of the bottle. Sure fire way to tell it's MGP. Though it's not a bad thing as MGP makes great whiskey.
Yes, the rye is mgp, but I think the bourbon is produced by Louisville Distilling Co where Lincoln Henderson was master distiller since 2005. I may be off on details, but that's what I heard.

O.K so I think I should say that I'm only 19 at the moment and I can not wait till I turn 21 and buy my first whisky bottle. So if I can get a suggestion of a introduction, intermediate and advanced level, I do have 2 years of saving so a budget is really not problem, is there any suggestions?

All the whisky. Actually last night I had Talisker 10 with a steak and seafood dinner, and it changed it's character at least 3 times during the meal. Amazing.

so problem: I love Octomore, but holy shit is it hard to drink. Is there anything I can do in the future with a whiskey that I like, but find very difficult to drink?

Independent bottlings are often cask strength, natural colour, an unchillfiltered unlike many Official bottlings which distillers attempt to keep consistent from batch to batch. Therefore there are wide ranges of taste. Many are fantastic but some can be lass than good. Always check whiskybase or whiskyfun before buying an independent bottling or any bottling for that matter.
God, I wish these were in my budget.

Hey guys i have been watching your video's for about six months now and I was hoping you could help me, i fell in love with islay because of bowmore, i jumped right to laphroiag and was wondering what you would recommend trying next and if there are any bourbons that are smokey like islay scotch.
Not really any bourbons that I know of. But you might dig higher proofs.
