An episode of The Whisk(e)y Vault hosted at Whisky Marketing School in Austin, TX. Today we talk about Dalmore 15 Year Old from The Dalmore Distillery.
"I'm a lover of interesting stories. It just so happens that most of them are mine!" This will most likely end up in my obituary some day. Love it Daniel.
hi, richard paterson here (using my youtube alias), must say enjoyed the video. in future please swirl, throw the contents away, the re-pour. Say "hello", "how are you", "very well thanks", "nice to meet you".
You guys are doing a good thing. I have always thought of myself as a bourbon fan first, but as I've been watching the channel the last couple of weeks, I have bought several different scotches and some glencairn glasses, I have found that I like scotch better... Who knew... I never would have thought a simple glass change would have made that much of a difference. Daniel and Rex, you guys are so much fun to watch and are very educational in your reviews. Thanks for doing what you're doing!
Have to agree on the cigar rant. I used to smoke a pipe when I drank whiskey and after I quit smoking but kept drinking whiskey the flavors of the whiskey changed dramatically.
Just checked out Richard Patterson ,wow what a personality ,the way he dumps that whisky on the floor my heart skipped a beat ,love the dalmore by the way ,one of the first whisky's I tried and loved!!!
Richard Patterson is a character....I spent over an hour last night jumping from clip to clip of him talking about whisky, how to drink it, why its important, and in 80% of the videos he tosses some on the floor!
Been bouncing around this channel for a bit now trying to catch up on all the videos, and I gotta say this one is the funniest yet. Had me seriously cracking up! The Nose is the man!! He's so entertaining and a downright whiskey wizard!! I learned recently that he helped design the Glencairn Glass too. If I ever meet him and he does that thing with the $60k Dalmore on me, I will be able to die fully content with my life.
No one may see this... but I came back to this video after seeing it 3 yrs ago and being a full blown MB for 2+ yrs. I found this very fascinating and informative. Its videos like this that got me hooked!
Just got my first dalmore and it’s the 15, I love this. It is easy and still enough to be interesting. I’m a few months into neat whisky and scotch in general has gone Way up the list for me. It’s taken a little time coming from bourbons and old fashioneds to like scotch, but it’s taking a front seat now. Crazy how different it can be from one to the other.
I have binge watched nearly all of your videos and I love you guys! One request, I could you please share a little more about the smell and taste of each whiskey? I like the storytelling of the distillery and your rapport, but often miss the taste/smell profile of each whiskey, which will help me determine if I want to buy it. Keep on keeping on! Shine. Not burn. ;-)
Just for you, Cindy ;-) We're trying to dance the line between entertaining and informative. And there are hundreds to thousands of videos out there doing fancy and snobby tasting notes, so we tend to ere on the side of entertainment.
After I listened to Mr Richard Paterson say the 15 year is one of his favorites I knew I gotta try that. And after hearing these guys talk about it im totally convinced to get a bottle immediately. I currently have a bottle of the 12 year and it is my favorite whiskey and easy to drink for a beginner like me. I cant wait to get the 15year
Have you ever tried the Dalmore King Alexander III.? I got it super cheap at the airport (91€ for a liter/ about $103 for a bigger than normal bottle) and I absolutely love it.
Paused, watched 2 videos of Richard Paterson doing a tasting lesson, realise hes a legend then back to this video. Although, anyone who casually throws a 64 y/o Dalmore on the floor is crazy in my book!
Character indeed. It hurts so much when he cleans his glass with whisky lol. Make sure you say Hello; How are you; very well; forgot the rest but he's awesome
I'm still kicking myself for not picking up a few of the Dalmore 12 and Cigar malts, about a year back when they finally had some in my local store. Prices were ridiculously low $60 for the 12yr.. bought one loved it then went back 2 days later and it was $90!!! Love the brand and the vids...very entertaining! Cheers!
It's not worth the original $60. They've branded their caramel coloured, chill filtered, 40% brand to enough people. Like the two above for example. I accept your meet in the parking lot challenge! Just kidding, I don't accept.
I love Richard Patterson. He's so entertaining when he talks about how to drink whisky. I don't care that it's the same message over and over with different people that he teaches about whisky. Haven't tried Dalmore yet. I find it once in a while at the liquor store, but it's more higher in price than many of my other brands that I enjoy
That guy is like the Gordon Ramsey of Whiskey. Adding on here. The cigar rant is very true. I have been drinking the same bottle of scotch for about 2 weeks now, the other night I saw enjoying a smoke and out of no where vanilla! Never tasted it before and have not tasted it since.
1:26 “Priests love whisky” Case in point. :) I have a bottle of this and have been (slowly) enjoying it. However, I wouldn’t characterize it as quite as friendly. The sweetness I find to be understated and the walnut-y flavor is more dominant to me. Still very enjoyable and I don’t understand why my other Whisky hero over in the Manx bothy doesn’t seem to like it as much, but as they say (and speaking of Latin): de gustibus non est disputandum.
Just to start off you guys are awesome. I've just started drinking whiskey and would love some suggestions from you guys. Keep up the great work. Cheers🍻
I was once in your shoes and I wish I had had a guide to the world of whiskies. I suggest watching all the Whisk(e)y Vault videos for a decent survey of the topic. Watch even the ones you might not think you’d be interested in because you will learn something. In my humble and very ignorant whisky opinion, I’d start with Dalwhinnie or another Speyside like Glenfiddich OR a lowland Scotch like Auchentoshan for a gentle introduction to Scotch. Branch out and try both blends and singles...... explore! I was a single malt only guy until Daniel showed me the error of my narrow thinking. I really have to thank the Vault for opening that door for me. I enjoy whisky more than ever now and its true there are no bad whiskies and there is no wrong way to drink it. I sorry but I have no advice and can’t help you with American whiskies or Canadians. I don’t drink either because they give me a vicious headache. Irish is easy, because as a rule they are the friendliest malts. I prefer Bushmills over Jameson, but other people like Jameson or Tullamore Dew or Redbreast or what have you. It’s a matter of personal taste. What I like you might not like and vice versa. If you want to taste before buying, sample different whiskies at a bar or join a whisky club. Good luck!
Have you guys reviewed a Dalmore Cigar Malt on the Whiskey Vault? If not, I'd like to see that. If you can get your hands on a bottle. They stopped making it in 2009.
Daniel - you are correct. I love cigars with whiskey, but always try a new whiskey on a clean palate. Just like smoking an amazing cigar on a clean palate will give you a truer taste of that cigar.
You know a really fun video would be if you guys did a video with each of your top 5 favorite whiskies. It would give Rex a chance to mooch another 10 in a day...
Another brand we carry a huge line of. 12,15, 18, King Alex, Cigar Malt, and a couple others. I love this channel, and I don't know if I can call myself a Mooch, I mean I work at a liquor store where I can try many bottles for free myself. Or I pay Wholesale, I guess I get some points. Yeah, let's just say I do. But I'm no 7,000+ level.
I have an unopened bottle of Dalmore 12 & an unopened bottle of Dalmore 15 (Specs doesn't have the Cigar Malt or I would consider it as well.) I'm going to a gathering with a few of my good friends, some of whom are not really Scotch Connoisseur's...Which bottle should I take with me, 12 or 15? I know both Scotch's are delicious. I'm thinking the 15... On a side note, there will be some people there that don't have a clue about Scotch...Not that I'm wasting Whisk(e)y...but, am I wasting Whisk(e)y bringing the 15?
Just subscribed to the channel, great stuff. I'd be another that would love to see a cigar and scotch pairing. I generally find that my cigars get overpowered by my scotch, even lighter bodied whisky. I'm usually a 1-5 cigars and scotch a week and try a lot of different stuff. I'd like to hear what pairings you have tried!
I am new to the world of whiskey/scotch. Just bought a bottle of the Dalmore 12 yr and man oh man is it ever good. Sweet and smooth. I smell cherry cake when I nose it. now I know I am new to this but that's what I get when I nose it.
Gentlemen, I need your help. Due in part to these videos, I need to try either the Dalmore 12 or the Highland Park 12. I want the Dalmore because it's pretty..... I prefer smoky whiskey, Laphroaig being a current favorite, but I definitely have a novice palette. I like Laphroaig, Ardbeg, Talisker, for my smoke. I was gifted some Glenfiddich 14 BBR and it's ok? I enjoy the Monkey Shoulder which is a blend of 3 speysides. I really can't decide between which to buy next, Highland Park or Dalmore, since I know Highland Park should be a little smoky. Please advise.
I do think it’s really cool that Dalmore does something different with each option, that they are literally different not just age. The Dalmore 18 sounds interesting and really good! Unfortunately, I HATE everyone on RUclips that has reviewed it... If only two interesting, advanced, whisky drinkers would come along and do a tasting review.... 😉😉🥃
I liked the 15 but I'm a super-noob. I thought the 12 was more complex with a longer taste.(if that's a thing?). I like both very much. If I were to generalize they both of them seem more sweet/fruity than say something like the the classic Laddie Islay - which is I'm sure a big "no duh" for those with experience.
If you go over to reddit, on the r/scotch or r/whisky, you'll find a lot of hate projected towards the dalmore series. The source of the hate is anything from e150 to chill-filtering, to non-cask strength avaliability etc etc. Do you find any merit in the hate or do you believe it's just the momentary trend which will blow over?
Full disclosure, I've never been a big whiskey person but I find myself being drawn in by some of these. I've been looking for a good starter and came across the Dalmore 15 gift set and need a seasoned whiskey drinkers opinion. Now to ship it to the states it will run me $120 bucks, will the additional $60 in shipping be worth it to someone like me?
I get given scotch as a gift from everyone, on birthdays and christmas, I suppose because they have no idea what else to get me. The bottle I enjoyed sipping the most so far, of about two dozen bottles of single-malt scotch, has been the Dalmore Cigar Malt Reserve. Just a splash of it goes a long way for me; not something I could chug, but it goes down easy and yet it has depth. I know nothing about how these scotches are made and I didn't even realize how much a bottle cost until I tried to buy myself a refill, but I'm now in search of something that is better, while being cheaper. I might try the 12-year next, but dunno., It's funny how opinions and reviews and snob factor can rob me of my enjoyment of a particular whiskey. Buying a brand with a reputation or hype or whatever is really rather off-putting. I just want to have something I can enjoy, and not think of anything else. Hearing that the camera man dislikes Dalmore because of artificial colouring makes me sad, as I now I feel I'm being judged for drinking it. That's the downside of something that's popular I guess -- people tend to have opinions of it. Anyways, this channel makes Whiskey fun and you two have a great personality. thanks!
the single in single malt means it comes from a single distillery. not because it comes from a single barrel. so technically, dalmore is a single malt cause its comes from just 1 distillery. whatever that happens in the distillery doesnt matter.
hard to tell what the somm loves more. the dalmore or the sound of his own voice... not to say the video is bad but even his buddy needed to shush him or gesture to him on more than one occasion... less interrupting would make this dynamic even stronger and more enjoyable to watch, just my 2 cents.
The more of these I watch, the more I am convinced that Rex's Mooch level is egregiously inflated because Daniel is an easy target. He (Daniel) is so kind and generous that it literally takes no skill to mooch off of him because he wants to share his whiskey.
I think diversity is key. I don’t drink one whiskey all the time. You also have mood and time of year. I noticed that I drink less Ardbeg in the summer then in the winter period. Dalmore is maybe easier to drink, but not simple. Sometimes you’re just in the mood for that. Indeed like the coffee and cappuccino example.
So while Rex was putting on his tall 70´s platform shoes to reach that bottle of Tobermory, we had to listen that 5 second intense beeping sound. I near choked on my Glenfarclas 105... Not cool guys, not fucking cool.
In conjunction with Rex's comments, Brian Regan, "I walked on the moon". ruclips.net/video/qBJ6yptGqm4/видео.html (poor video quality, but it's the audio that matters).
Dalmore wait what age was that again? I know you didn’t get the age statement wrong in the cold intro and say 12 when it’s a 15 lol busting balls just watching some older stuff keep doing what your doing.
Say what you want about "added color" or whathaveyou, but it's still solid whisky. I like complex stuff, black coffee, Islay scotches, and Dalmore is still good. It is a bit on the pricey side, but it's no worse of an offender than Johnny Walker, but with better whisky. Richard Patterson blends a damn good whisky and that's the bottom line
Dalmore (12) is sooo good. I'm going to drive 30 miles next Monday just to pick up a bottle of 15 because a liquor store sells for 30 bucks cheaper than my local total wine.
Ok you have me intrigued that the makeup of the increasing age statements are treated differently. I was less than impressed with the 12yo and the original Cigar Malt. I will try the 15yo and get back to you. Still nudging you toward Glendronach though.
I'm on the hunt for Glendronach. Turns out their distribution here in the US has vanished. I wonder if they're geariing up for a new release with new designs. Either way, I"ll work on getting them!
The 15 was pulled from the market until stocks replenish due to being mothballed a few years ago and bought out but there is still some 18, 21 around in Texas(Dallas area).
Daniel, I agree that cigars don't completely KILL taste buds, but studies show that smoking regularly does, in fact, DULL taste buds. Luckily, if one quits smoking, it only takes a couple weeks for taste buds recover. So yes, technically they don't "die" (source: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5329949/). I'm not sure why professional chefs and sommeliers think they can smoke multiple cigars a day or packs of cigarettes a day and still think that they are tasting at full capacity... they are making their jobs much more difficult, and they are quite possibly making their work less valuable.
I just saw this episode. As for the comment on 8'35'' (you probably know this, but) Ralfy seems to HATE Dalmore. I find it interesting that such a notable whisky enthusiast puts this whisky so badly. Oh! And a parking lot fight between Rex and Ralfy would make for a very nice Thanksgiving special, just sayin'...
Yeah, he considers it shitty swill. Amazing to me. I love it, but there's no accounting for taste. We need to see Rex and Ralfy in celebrity death match.
"I'm a lover of interesting stories. It just so happens that most of them are mine!"
This will most likely end up in my obituary some day. Love it Daniel.
hi, richard paterson here (using my youtube alias), must say enjoyed the video. in future please swirl, throw the contents away, the re-pour. Say "hello", "how are you", "very well thanks", "nice to meet you".

Tried Dalmore 15 for the first time. Absolutely delightful! Hyperbole aside, I believe this is an ideal cool weather whisky!
Just got my first dalmore and it’s the 15, I love this. It is easy and still enough to be interesting. I’m a few months into neat whisky and scotch in general has gone Way up the list for me. If you love the 12 and 15 you have to try the Alexander 3rd. Sensational Whisky... it’s a masterpiece
I absolutely love yalls videos
Have you ever tried the Dalmore King Alexander III.? I got it super cheap at the airport (91€ for a liter/ about $103 for a bigger than normal bottle) and I absolutely love it.
Sweet! We do have it. It's awesome.
Getting this for new years.
Richard Paterson is hilarious hahaha truly enjoyed stopping this episode of video and watching him nose a whisky
Paused, watched 2 videos of Richard Paterson doing a tasting lesson, realise hes a legend then back to this video.

Dang! $90 may be worth it for the 12, but that's still crazy steep.
It's not worth the original $60. They've branded their caramel coloured, chill filtered, 40% brand to enough people. Like the two above for example. I accept your meet in the parking lot challenge!
Just kidding, I don't accept.
I didn’t know that about the crest, very cool
I love Richard Patterson. He's so entertaining when he talks about how to drink whisky. I don't care that it's the same message over and over with different people that he teaches about whisky. He's a hero of mine. Mainly because he's so damn ridiculous.
One of my favorites
That guy is like the Gordon Ramsey of Whiskey. Adding on here. The cigar rant is very true. I have been drinking the same bottle of scotch for about 2 weeks now, the other night I saw enjoying a smoke and out of no where vanilla! Never tasted it before and have not tasted it since.
1:26 “Priests love whisky”
Case in point. :)
I have a bottle of this and have been (slowly) enjoying it.
Cheers🍻
We suggest all the whiskey ;-)
I was once in your shoes and I wish I had had a guide to the world of whiskies. I suggest watching all the Whisk(e)y Vault videos for a decent survey of the topic. Let's say, mooching for a living is a reasonable skill.
Indeed!
Watched 1 video on TY about Richard Paterson and then watched every video of him. 😂 feel the same way about him 👍
Can you guys let us know what the big difference is between delmore 12, 15, 18 and cigar malt? I would like to get in to wisky. Thanks
I don't know if I come here for the review or the funny moments between you two!
I know both Scotch's are delicious. my favorite whiskey hands down
Just subscribed to the channel, great stuff.
I love this idea. I'll work out some options!
One of my favorite pairings was Oban 14 yr and a Padron 1964 Maduro!
I am new to the world of whiskey/scotch. Just bought a bottle of the Dalmore 12 yr and man oh man is it ever good. Sweet and smooth. I smell cherry cake when I nose it. now I know I am new to this but that's what I get when I nose it.
Why is Dalmore so good 😋
Happy New Year Guys from Bonnie Scotland...
likewise!
Dalmore is beautiful. But Highland Park will end up becoming one of your all time go-to whiskies. It's a classic.
go with the "beautiful" dalmore. Pure liquid e150 and a plastic stag glued to the bottle. awesome..
Have yiu reviewed the cigar malt? If not, please do. If you have, please post link.
Not yet, but we will. I really like it.
Love me some Tobermory as well as Lediag.
the cigar blend has a satisfyingly slow finish
*can't find the video of the cigar malt*
how long did u two drink on this bottle ^^ looks like 3 hours ;DDDD
My family crest comes with a slogan. Redit expetatu diu. The expected returns for a long time...booyah.
Rex's Motto: Accipio Non Emo. Roughly "I Accept (as in a gift), not Buy"
I dunno. I think it should be Ut recipere melius quam emere "To Receive Is Better Than To Buy"
Omens vos protest, dare nihil retro...........take all you can, give nothing back
Mentioning the cigar malt with no video? What a tease!
Doesn't drinking the last bit in the bottle oxide the whiskey altering the flavour?
It can. It depends on how long it was sitting in the bottle.
Is it proofed down to its lowest legal level, chill filtered or with added color?
The Gunn family motto. Aut-Pax-Aut-Bellum, it means "Either peace or war."
There are assholes in every category. Maybe disproportionately on reddit ;-)
My wife got me a dalmore king Alexander iii for Valentine’s Day. That is very good whiskey friends.
See if you can find a bar that has it first. Better to go in fully aware.
Whiskey Vault Thank you
Richard Paterson is the reason I found you guys.
Why do I get the feeling you don't care much for Dalmore? I love it! It's got a wine cask taste. Its savory
I might try the 12-year next, but dunno.,
It's funny how opinions and reviews and snob factor can rob me of my enjoyment of a particular whiskey.
Anyways, this channel makes Whiskey fun and you two have a great personality. thanks!
So if they mix Dalmore its a blended malt???
Please answer
the single in single malt means it comes from a single distillery. not because it comes from a single barrel.
so technically, dalmore is a single malt cause its comes from just 1 distillery. whatever that happens in the distillery doesnt matter.
hard to tell what the somm loves more. the dalmore or the sound of his own voice... not to say the video is bad but even his buddy needed to shush him or gesture to him on more than one occasion... less interrupting would make this dynamic even stronger and more enjoyable to watch, just my 2 cents.
What kind of shoes does a thief wear? Sneakers
Hahahah omg loved this video
They going to review the 14?
welcome to the Whiskey Vault, today we will be reviewing this empty bottle
The more of these I watch, the more I am convinced that Rex's Mooch level is egregiously inflated because Daniel is an easy target. He (Daniel) is so kind and generous that it literally takes no skill to mooch off of him because he wants to share his whiskey.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Did u say ur family was a mare of london lmfao! just kiddn i started in kentucky and looks like ill be passing out in islay hah cheers
Cheers😎🥃
i own this and in my opinion it would be a lot better with 46%. it feels a bit "watery" or thin
In conjunction with Rex's comments, Brian Regan, "I walked on the moon". ruclips.net/video/qBJ6yptGqm4/видео.html (poor video quality, but it's the audio that matters).
The 12. Baby Sick that explodes into oranges in cream and finish’s spicy with tobacco. Complex for a 12. Gonna skip 15 and try the cigar malt.
Im suprised you find peat?
Nursing home! 😂😂😂
Richard Paterson would slap u for holding your glass like that😂
Dalmore wait what age was that again? I know you didn’t get the age statement wrong in the cold intro and say 12 when it’s a 15 lol busting balls just watching some older stuff keep doing what your doing.
how much?
“I’ll join in and knife you in the back” lmbo… the way he said it… I believed him haha
'Dare to Know' in Latin- Sapere Aude
Dalmore (12) is sooo good. I'm going to drive 30 miles next Monday just to pick up a bottle of 15 because a liquor store sells for 30 bucks cheaper than my local total wine.
I have yet to find a dram that pairs well with weed.
Rex’s motto: Mooch not in vain.
"you can take this into a nursing home"
How does it taste?
supermarket tea
Daniel, I agree that cigars don't completely KILL taste buds, but studies show that smoking regularly does, in fact, DULL taste buds. Luckily, if one quits smoking, it only takes a couple weeks for taste buds recover. So yes, technically they don't "die" (source: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5329949/). I'm not sure why professional chefs and sommeliers think they can smoke multiple cigars a day or packs of cigarettes a day and still think that they are tasting at full capacity... they are making their jobs much more difficult, and they are quite possibly making their work less valuable.
us troll killers should band together
Mine is Buiadh No Bas (Conquer or die)
Smoke? Peat? There both unpeated Whisky‘s lol

More friendly than Dalwhinnie 15 ??
I shine not burn
I just relized that I'm a "coffe snobb"
Dare to know.........Audeat scire
Dalmore is just to plain.
Peat .. on the 15 ? To me it's Xmas cake and sherry cream.
It's raining men......
