Watching from my hotel in London. I visited Bimber Distillery yesterday, a tiny craft distillery in London producing single malt in Gin country. The micro and craft character of it made me think of what is going on in Texas. Different in flavor profile but similar in philosophy and mentality. I talked to the owner about what is developing in the Texas Whiskey Association and suggested they something similar with their fellow whisky craftsmen. I have a special place in my heart (and liver) for Ironroot Republic Distillery and really enjoyed my tour with the Lickerish family.
Having watched his palate mature since his first taste of Brimstone on the channel, Rex has gone from mooch to semi-sommelier. I occasionally find myself amazed at the level of some of his tasting comments. Perhaps an aluminum somm's necklace is in order to mark his achievements?
Good donation, Matthew Pilgrim! By coincidence I bought a bottle of the 15 today. I will rewatch this episode this weekend when I open it to taste while watching these opulent bastards.
The Glendronach (old) 15 was what we used at our 2003 wedding for the whisky toast. I had wondered why it disappeared, because I had really loved it. The revival is quite nice!
I actually really like it when somms disagree. I could be dead wrong here but my impression of a sommelier or connoisseur's job to create a drinking experience for a customer is a creative drive, similar to a chef preparing a meal in a way. Sure, there are some rules you always want to follow but it's ok to have different opinions or different styles. Also, tell all the sensitive people in Canada that it's customary in the states to go against the rules. Today is the fourth of July and I'm drinking Wolfburn. If Scotland ever gets it's own independence day maybe I'll crack open some Canadian.

Going to have to add July 2nd to the whiskey calendar to memorialize the 45000 barrels of Jim Beam lost in the fire. A sad day no matter how you feel about their product. Those barrels had so much more to give...
I wasn’t a huge fan of the 12 but think a few more years in a barrel could make it worthwhile for me so I’ll try to find the 15. Definitely better than Macallans you get offerings though. Bring back the bagpipes.

Whatever day you opened the Crowded Barrel, every year should do an Eleanor review (whatever you have lying around). December 26th you should do an Irish Whiskey for the first Whiskey Vault video (2016). C'mon it is the first Whiskey Vault/Whiskey Tribe Milestones that really count, right?

Ok. A question for Rex. I've been trying to learn the art of mooching, with you as my role model. I made a turntable (lazy susan) for my neighbors, and as payment they supplied me with several bottles of scotch: Abunadh, Uigeidahl, Glenlivet 18, Classic Laddie, etc. Unfortunately, the day after they delivered payment, the turntable warped into something resembling a pringle, and wouldn't turn anymore. So the question is: what's the correct Mooch remedy? A full refund? Give the empty bottles back? Replace with a new one and only charge a couple more bottles?

Pete Ford I took up the peated GlenDronach extra option - just because of the GD name. Anyway, I can appreciate the struggle, the 15 Revival is a glorious drop. There was some chatter in the whisky tribe Facebook page recently about GD 12 vs 15 vs 18yo... I think the 15 had the most support. Good luck!

Question: I have a family member who is in the fuel alcohol business, they generate massive amounts of alcohol for the various refineries, from truly massive stills. They also sell off alcohol to producers of spirits. So my question is, can you distill your mash-bill separately? Can you mix for example a Corn, wheat, barley, and rye alcohol and create a bourbon as long as you put it in a unused white oak barrel and correct proportions?
This has nothing to do with anything at hand...but in an old video talking about black bottle y'all said that it was originally a blend of all (at the time) 7 Islay distilleries. Is anybody doing that currently? I'd do anything to have a blend of the "signature expression" from all 8 current distilleries. #peathead

Whenever daniel goes off camera to dig some whiskey out of "the vault" I feel like there an opportunity there for some silly cut scenes of him like...climbing down a ladder, or moving a secret door bookshelf into a physics defying area of "the vault" and while Rex talks about his opinion on the whiskey and Daniel yells from off screen all we should hear is clanking glass. Some other ideas, Walking down rows and rows of whiskey bottles, Taking a torch off the walls, digging into dirt to discover a bottle of whatever he was looking for....etc

Go to a whisky bar and try a few by the shot - cheaper than a whole bottle, and it lets you know if it is worth trying more in that direction. One suggestion: id does not look like you have tried a sherry Whisky. A great, and great value one is Glenfarclas 10.
Old Glendronach 18 vs 15 vs 12? Give me 15. New releases I actually like the 12 because it's a better value and I think the 15 has lost something. The 18 didn't have anything that made me like it over the other two enough to buy it again
