I was 16 when this song first came out. I was an abuse survivor and a therapy veteran already, so I understood way more about these concepts than I should have at that age. Now, over 30 years later, this song holds even more layers for me. It's been the soundtrack of Doing The Work for me since I first heard it. Somehow it never gets old. "The more I look, the more I find; As I close on in, I get so blind." Most anyone who's had a major breakthrough in therapy can tell you that when you're on the edge of a big realization, your mind just goes blank. You're tearing down one of the protective mechanisms that's kept you "safe" for many years, and your brain tries to keep you from gaining that uncomfortable piece of knowledge with one last layer of protection, which is something like amnesia. You have to "break through" that layer in order to recontextualize the damage you've been dealt. "Dirt" is something that people try to avoid and struggle to remove from their homes, their cars, their skin, their clothes, etc. But while we're trying to avoid being dirty, we also know that dirt is a medium for growth. It can hide many secrets, and while some of those hidden things are really unpleasant, many of them can be wonderful and nourishing.
All that you said above resonated with me. Its hard to face some parts of life, parts that your mind hides aways to save your sanity. To me It's like onions , the more layers you try to remove, the more it stings . This song is one I go to and play a lot , there is so much hidden it's words . I wish you all the best and hope you find strength in whatever helps you through . Whether that's a God a friend or a stranger . ❤

Only recently, I realized this song was not about asking for help and love. It is about self realazation and healing. Maybe I grew. My perspective after loving this song for over 30 years.
Could anyone but Peter Gabriel make a popular song about undergoing therapy and finding the emotional wounds that never healed and learning to deal with those scars to become a healthier, happier person, and then release it as the debut single off his first new album in over half a decade?
Something I shared with my college girlfriend while sitting in the dark (barring the lights from the stereo). This one, and Annie Lennox' DIVA. Both beautiful and spiritual.
in the 90's this kept playing on MTV over and over with this genius video, his voice was echoing through my family's appartment, Peter Gabriel begging my parents to stop ab*sing me, signing to warn them, singing about what I will become ....and my parents were like, Yeaaah,we don't speak English, and they kept hurting me to the point of me ending up sui*.dal, and not speaking to my father since 2010...Well, at least this rich British gentleman stood up for me when nobody did.
The entire song is about transformation; digging up the dirt from old traumas which cause us to have all kinds of emotional issues as an adult; it is about internal housekeeping, healing; rebirth.
I think everyone has had 'that conversation' in car, that's why we can all associate with it. Peter Gabriel really does understand emotional turmoil and suffering on levels many will never understand...it makes me wonder what he went through that was so bad that he can right such great songs.

Years later, I'm revisiting this song after a long, long period of realizing trauma and going to therapy and digging in my own dirt, and now this video makes so much sense to me. This song has truly "HELP"ed me "HEAL", thank you Mr. Gabriel.
OOF DUDE, are you me? I remember I used to watch this video as a kid, and didn’t really quite pay much attention to the song, or the music, or even the lyrics . about one or two years ago I was living in Patagonia, South America ... I found this video out of coincidence on RUclips, and I remembered of my childhood... and all of a sudden I can’t watch it without getting sick, and feeling like I’m going to faint . childhood childhood traumas are a bitch.
Wow. Apparently he went to jails to visit people who had done aggressive acts, like murder, and then wrote this song from that perspective. I actually love this song. And the live version around '92 is AMAZING.
I remember when this came out in 1992, PG was talking about his journey with therapy and mental health. I was struggling at the time and if often sang "digging in the dirt to find the places I got hurt" to remind myself I needed to go to therapy and get help.
I remember reading in an interview with Peter when this song was first release that it reflected the journey he was on. Evidently seeking counsel for mental health issues was fronded upon in England during the early 1990's. Brining this out to the public was evidently a goal of his as well as being transparent with his own issues and their roots. Quite bold!
He also went to a jail and interviewed murderers. Most of them were abused badly and, no excuses, but needed help. The level of abuse was horrific. I guess he went through similar stuff but found an outlet. It does catch up with you though.
The song and the video are so intense. They remind me of past relationships, of arguments boiling over in the car (you can't escape from one another), this unsettling combination of aggression ("You went too far.") and dependence ("I need support."). Very touching and - I agree - bold.
Peter Gabriel weeded out remedies of soul searching, his cure was more self-inflicted pain! He had at an early age the highest degree of existential misery and an exorbitant brilliance beyond his youth. He's a gift from the god Apollo. Very few touch the hands of gods, Pete did. Plaudits, Sir.
I had never paid much attention to this video when it was all over MTV in the 80s, or in the years since. In doing my own digging (it finds you, you don't find it) I see that the video conveys *everything*, it's all spelled out for the attentive viewer. Videos are generally just fluff, and entertainment. This video has used the medium in a way that is pure, absolute genius. It's like a low level Finnegan's Wake about how we get hurt when we're young, how we carry it through life, how it drives us. Then, if we are willing to meet the challenge of the work it demands, how we undo the hurt and trauma, to be freed, so we can open up to life, and become effective human beings. That, rather than being well groomed odor free consumer amoeba who spend their time until the grave buying and doing, trying to fill that void, or to bury that discomfort in endless entertainment, other people, food, alcohol, etc.
This song has been a shaping force in my life when it comes to dealing with anger issues and complicated family histories. I frankly do not care what anyone else on Planet Earth thinks of this song. I needed it in my life and I am very grateful to have had it.
Was thinking about Genetic Disorders (I got a couple) and then the thought of my big brother who had the alcoholism gene my Grandfather had. Drank since a teen, never asked for help, or got any. He eventually literally drank himself to death, killed by "alcohol poisoning." I was browsing RUclips and suddenly remembered a song that had had a profound effect on my brother when it came out. It was "Digging In The Dirt" by one of his favorite musicians, Peter Gabriel. He had told me about the song as if he'd made some kind of personal emotional breakthrough. So I looked up the song here, and watched the official video. To say it was an emotional experience would be one of the greatest understatements of my life. RIP Charles.
I haven't seen anyone mention that 'Us' is one of the best mixed albums of all time. This is what I play whenever testing out new speakers or headphones. The whole album is astounding.
I love the US album - so emotionally honest and heartfelt. I've also heard/read that The Blessings' Prince of the Deep Water was used by professionals to test speakers. The album was recorded and produced by Neil Dorfsman and mastered by Bob Ludwig.
I love how he channeled his anger and hurt into this song rather than put on a a happy face and pretend that he isn't in pain. That's why we have art, literature, media, and music, to escape from whatever troubles we have. As someone with depression and anxiety, don't hold it inside of you and pretend to be happy when you aren't okay, Do't let it boil over in you and let it go out of control. talk to someone and get help, and do something that is uplifting and positive, something that can calm you like music Thanks Peter Gabriel
Trust me, I suffered for a long time and to make it worse I was bullied in 8th grade for my body shape and my acne and I started becoming bullimic and because of the lack of food, I was tired, vomiting, and irritable because of how much my stomach hurt. I would get into fights with my family members, mainly my sister, and my then boyfriend was a very cruel and emotionally abusive young man who ended up sleeping with my best friend. I was spiraling out of control, having regular nervous breakdowns in class, and I had attempted suicide 4 times that year already, this was to be the fifth and hopefully final time I had suicidal idealations. I went home from the school dance, wrote my parents an apology note for what I was about to do, three out all the flowers and cards he gave me, and hung on of my belts to a ceiling fixture and just as I was about to kick the chair under me, this song played off my phone, and I realized that God had more in life for me, I climbed off the chair and cried my ass off and called my mom and she had me meet up with a therapist. I've been doing good recently so thanks :).
My daughter was two years old when this song came out. Great song, except for the fact that she, as a toddler, gave a whole new meaning to "digging in the dirt". She would go play in the compost heap and dig up grub worms. I ran back there once when I saw she had a grub worm in her little hand that was headed for her mouth. Hahaha! Boy, did I run. So, thanks for the memories tonight.
Eduardo Poblete de Chile, hermoso recuerdo de tu hijita, lo recuerdo pues mi hija también tenía esa edad, cuando sonaba este gran tema en las radios, fabuloso tema y genial video..
I can’t believe I’m seeing this video after 11 years! Listen to the song frequently, but the visuals in the video make his anger and confusion palpable. What a beautiful expression of trauma.
Can not believe it's taken me over 30 years to realise that the actress in this video was also the waitress Maria in Allo Allo. The internet is a beautiful thing, in the right hands!
Beautiful, very meaningful song. The start of the chorus "I'm digging in the dirt; stay with me I need support" after the previous agressive outbursts, still kills me. I think it is about regaining some empathy and facing your fears and vulnerableties, after one has been running from those for far too long..
I agree.Isn't it a rather common experience: Arguments boil over behind the wheel (you can't escape from one another), you almost feel like killing your partner, who really "went too far", only to realise how vulnerable both of you are and you wished it all hadn't happened? I've been there myself and am so grateful to Peter for giving us this song.
My dad listened to all the great musicians like Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, REM, U2, Sistery of Mercy, Pearl Jam and so on ... I grew up with this music and I still love it and show it to my son. There is something in this music that is hard to describe. So pure and touching.
People seem to forget that Music Video Clips were a new medium used to sell tapes and CD's. Also this was THE MTV Revolution! So Peter Gabriel made awesome video clips. He is a Master Showman after all.
Saw Peter Gabriel in Vancouver. I've been a fan, not a mega fan, but he did put on a really memorable concert. I guess I didn't realize that he really is a serious musician, and everyone that works for him are quite accomplished. His songs on I/O sound way cooler in real life. Glad I got to see him.
When an artist can express the spectrum of our humanity in such a visceral and creative way that person truly warrants the respect of others. Peter Gabriel has demonstrated his ability to challenge, innovate and push the boundaries of creativity for decades. A true genius!
Typically someone that needs this much face time would be written of as a massive narcissist, which is likely the case sure, but in PG videos his expressions explain the meaning of the songs, he's the lead actor trying to portray a complex vibe. PG could end up revered for elevating pop music videos to a higher form of art.
Fvkin Amazed Serious? I thought is was Tony Levin, aka G. Gordon Liddy's doppleganger. Good company to mistake either one for the other. I will defer to your judgement, for now. ;)
Think about it. Back in the day alot of people thought Peter's videos were weird. But IMO he was the first artist to take the music video and make it a true art form
+Carlos...quite agree, perhaps because Gabriel is unflinchingly honest and uncompromising in his lyrics and far more mature than many of the other "artists" out there in the world of rocknroll...his music is always approachable, but man, those lyrics. Complex. Complexity really isn't rewarded well enough.
carlos PG had a cult following in Genesis and grew a bigger following during his solo run. The man has always had a huge following and could still sell out a show in a heartbeat today. You need to learn the definition of underrated.
Digging in the dirt, stay with me i.need support. This song obviously is,about past trauma that is too painful to face, to deal with it ,you have to Dig in the dirt. And unbury the painful memory to release the trauma. It took me 40 years to realise what Peter is,actually saying in this song!! Still very powerful to this very day.
Peter Gabriel puts so much creation in his videos, and pain and discomfort upon himself to make his videos too. I could watch them over and over again.

It is amazing. The lyric "Stay with me I need support" says so much about his condition. He is the only one digging and working things out. It's as if he wants you to be there to watch and witness what he is revealing about himself. He wants your attention but not your help. Its how I interpret it but it feels like Peter is laying as much of himself bare for all to see so that he can then piece himself together after finding everything he needs. He is an amazing Artist.

Keep diggin', brother
god bless
I felt the same the first time I saw sledgehammer video. And i was same age 7 -8 years old. That freaked me out. Weirdest thing I had seen on TV ever.
Wow. Apparently he went to jails to visit people who had done aggressive acts, like murder, and then wrote this song from that perspective. I actually love this song. And the live version around '92 is AMAZING.
The basslines and guitar riffs, omg...
Yeah, run it through a proper setup, fucking killer
Synthesizers are talking to me.....
Moving ME...😁🩵
One of the best Albums ever.
Quite bold!
It was about his alcoholic father I belive it was him coming to terms with it
Mental illness is not a shameful affliction. So many of us are struggling too, so we can relate to this song ♥️ Feel better soon, Peter ♥️
He also went to a jail and interviewed murderers. Most of them were abused badly and, no excuses, but needed help. The level of abuse was horrific. I guess he went through similar stuff but found an outlet. It does catch up with you though.
It was one of the first times such a journey was welcomed into the culture for sure.
The song and the video are so intense. They remind me of past relationships, of arguments boiling over in the car (you can't escape from one another), this unsettling combination of aggression ("You went too far.") and dependence ("I need support."). Very touching and - I agree - bold.
Woke up this morning with this song in my head.
❤
I think Peter Gabriel made some of the most creative music-videos in the 80s
90's welcome to the world. Not everything is that old millenial
Ditto. Bingo. Dumbo. Bunghole. was one of this greatest songs.
@@jketcham9004 LMFAO you're to funny..💯
AGREE😂😂
Absolutely He was The Best Making these Videos
This was ahead of its time.
Like some Michel gondry shit
You're right, way ahead.
as is almost all of PGs stuff
All of his work, music and vids, is
Literally ahead of its time... Two years later the celebrated music video Black Hole Sun would come out, borrowing many elements from this.
Bravo to your bold statement!❤
This song has been a shaping force in my life when it comes to dealing with anger issues and complicated family histories. I frankly do not care what anyone else on Planet Earth thinks of this song. I needed it in my life and I am very grateful to have had it.
Нам просто не надо забывать,что мы ЛЮДИ..!Нас всех терзают проблемы,НО!!МЫ ЛЮДИ!
Song is 29 yrs old, and it sounds like it was made today..
I bought the album when it came out, I feel old!
i know right, all his vids are quirky but awesome and creative
Yep I remember it in 1992. It was the summer and how fast time flies.
Like the rest of Piter Gabriel's music. The lyrics are awesome.
Peter Gabriel is definitely an artist
Mmhmm.
He's not a podiatrist
I remember watching this clip as a kid. I wasn't sure wtf was happening, but I knew I liked it
This has a thumping bassline
Happy 71st Birthday Peter Brian Gabriel 02/13/1950.
You are a progressive rock Icon. Your fans love you.
Thanks Mate.
I wanna wish an early Happy 74th Birthday 🎂 to Peter Brian Gabriel!!! Digging In The Dirt Peter Gabriel!!!!
3:25
im here 2 days before his b day 2024 he still rocks !!!
Was thinking about Genetic Disorders (I got a couple) and then the thought of my big brother who had the alcoholism gene my Grandfather had. Drank since a teen, never asked for help, or got any. He eventually literally drank himself to death, killed by "alcohol poisoning."
I was browsing RUclips and suddenly remembered a song that had had a profound effect on my brother when it came out.
RIP Charles
I haven't seen anyone mention that 'Us' is one of the best mixed albums of all time. This is what I play whenever testing out new speakers or headphones. The whole album is astounding.
totally agree......gabriels album us, paul simons graceland.....floyds division bell and beatles sgt peppers
Good to know... cheers.
Yes! One of the reasons why it's my favorite PG album
I love the US album - so emotionally honest and heartfelt. I've also heard/read that The Blessings' Prince of the Deep Water was used by professionals to test speakers. The album was recorded and produced by Neil Dorfsman and mastered by Bob Ludwig.
Us made me weep
Beautiful, grotesque.
This shit resonates through my SOUL....
Volume MAXIMUM!!!!!!!🩵😁
Excellent! I'm from Godalming in the UK, where Genesis started. A tenuous connection...😗
2:04 has such a 90's music video look and feel... I get a "Blackhole sun" kinda vibe going on.
I love how he channeled his anger and hurt into this song rather than put on a a happy face and pretend that he isn't in pain. That's why we have art, literature, media, and music, to escape from whatever troubles we have. As someone with depression and anxiety, don't hold it inside of you and pretend to be happy when you aren't okay, Do't let it boil over in you and let it go out of control. talk to someone and get help, and do something that is uplifting and positive, something that can calm you like music
Thanks Peter Gabriel
Wise words man
@@YeahitsMeSylvia I hope you are allright. I'm fighting with the same problem right now. Let PG be our saviour!
I see it more as a way to confront and process pain, not escape it. That comes later.
@@Bobklijn Im doing well and have been in therapy, thank you!
For me this is a top five Gabriel hit. Got the groove and the metaphysical depth of lyric🎉
When it spelled out, "HELP", ... close to tears. 3:44
Bottom end on this song is so good. Tony Levin, what a bass player
Will Flannery We can also thank Daniel Lanois for that😀🙏
An excellent rhythm section makes for excellent songs
@@arkantika3927 finally someone who knows whats up, Daniel the moog astronaut
Damn right!
Tony Levin and that KING CRIMSON effect
"This time you've gone too far" A masterpiece indeed.
I liked him at the time but his music has aged well.
_Us_ is the Peter Gabriel album my Dad had in his car when I was growing up, and "Digging in the Dirt" is my favorite song from it.
No surprise he was a member of such a genius band like Genesis. Shock the Monkey is still my favorite of his.
Can not believe it's taken me over 30 years to realise that the actress in this video was also the waitress Maria in Allo Allo. The internet is a beautiful thing, in the right hands!
Jeez!
Back when music did not suck!
Thank you very much, Peter Gabriel!
Was this song written about Peter Gabriel's relationship with Rosanna Arquette? I thought I read this when it first came out
I think it's his dad/parents doing the aggressive stuff. He's digging in the dirt of his past.
Peter Gabriel is a genius... We may not of got these amazing musical masterpieces if he stayed in genesis.
Every song by Peter is an emotional masterpiece
Seeing the secret world tour with my Mom in Milwaukee was amazing. Fun when Mom enjoyed herself so much! Thx
Absolute brilliance.
My dad listened to all the great musicians like Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, REM, U2, Sistery of Mercy, Pearl Jam and so on ... I grew up with this music and I still love it and show it to my son. There is something in this music that is hard to describe. So pure and touching.
Yeah he's a genius!
People seem to forget that Music Video Clips were a new medium used to sell tapes and CD's. Also this was THE MTV Revolution! So Peter Gabriel made awesome video clips. He is a Master Showman after all.
Introspective brilliance
Saw Peter Gabriel in Vancouver. I've been a fan, not a mega fan, but he did put on a really memorable concert. I guess I didn't realize that he really is a serious musician, and everyone that works for him are quite accomplished. His songs on I/O sound way cooler in real life. Glad I got to see him.
His music just never gets old. It just gets better.
When an artist can express the spectrum of our humanity in such a visceral and creative way that person truly warrants the respect of others. Peter Gabriel has demonstrated his ability to challenge, innovate and push the boundaries of creativity for decades. A true genius!
Hi I recommend a song called 'Looking Into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
@@redskies4530 sounds very much like an early genesis vibe
@@thecolofthewild I have to agree-have a good one.
Typically someone that needs this much face time would be written of as a massive narcissist, which is likely the case sure, but in PG videos his expressions explain the meaning of the songs, he's the lead actor trying to portray a complex vibe. PG could end up revered for elevating pop music videos to a higher form of art.
My favorite song of his!I've been hurt many times!
Thanks Peter Gabriel . Got a lot of college work, and now career work, done to this song. Excellent album.
The bass player is killing this song. Badassery ahead.
Tony Levin!!!
MurphyMonster Cool> Thanks!
you are correct sir.
***** Indeed
Fvkin Amazed Serious? I thought is was Tony Levin, aka G. Gordon Liddy's doppleganger. Good company to mistake either one for the other. I will defer to your judgement, for now. ;)
"Stay with me I need Support" great line!
I know! I love the whole song but that is truly my favorite part.
Think about it. Back in the day alot of people thought Peter's videos were weird. But IMO he was the first artist to take the music video and make it a true art form
Could not have said it better. Absolute art form.
Well said his music videos are a true art form
Peter's songs and videos are innovative, unique and defining art forms! @Steve Graham
it's only weird when it is misunderstood.
Check out Frank Zappa's Inca roads and stinky feet.
Waking at 3 am for work. 35 years after stopping alcohol and other drugs. This just hits a little different.
Three decades later, Peter Gabriel and this hit keeps "Digging In The Dirt"!
Peter Gabriel is one of those artists that you discover, if you care to dig.
I thought so, but millions missed it :)
Care to dig some more?
mountains of music!
Underrated? HÁ!!!...LOL...
I'm digging right now! And loving it :D Obsession in full swing ;)
Love these old MTV videos. Great song 🎵 peace and joy 😊 thanks 8888
Peter Gabriel is a seriously underrated artist. Thanks for posting.
He was never underated in the first place lol
He isn't underrated by a longshot
carlos PG had a cult following in Genesis and grew a bigger following during his solo run. The man has always had a huge following and could still sell out a show in a heartbeat today.
You need to learn the definition of underrated.
He's not underrated!
PTSD -if there was ever a song/ lyrics /video that shows it.. it's this! Thank you Peter❤
one word for this man.....Genius!
I relate so much to his lyrics I feel like I wrote them myself
Totally agree. Genius. Artist. Everything he does reeks of craftsmanship and arduous, painstaking attention to detail
David Foust no other way to explain him
Amén!!!
Still DIGGING this song!
Beautiful video n song for all who got bullied at one point of their life n got over it.He is healer through his songs
I'm addicted to your music. God bless you and family
I never knew Peter Gabriel could get so dirtyyy this is awesome!!
Peter Gabriel puts so much creation in his videos, and pain and discomfort upon himself to make his videos too. I could watch them over and over again.
Something in me, dark and sticky
All the time it's getting strong
No way of dealing with this feeling
Can't go on like this too long
This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
I told you, I told you, I told you, I told you
This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
I told you, I told you, I told you, I told you
Don't talk back
Just drive the car
Shut your mouth
I know what you are
Don't say nothing
Keep your hands on the wheel
Don't turn around
This is for real
Digging in the dirt
Stay with me, I need support
I'm digging in the dirt
To find the places I got hurt
Open up the places I got hurt
The more I look, the more I find
As I close on in, I get so blind
I feel it in my head, I feel it in my toes
I feel it in my sex, that's the place it goes
This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
I told you, I told you, I told you, I told you
This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far
This time you've gone too far

It is amazing. The lyric "Stay with me I need support" says so much about his condition. He is the only one digging and working things out. It's as if he wants you to be there to watch and witness what he is revealing about himself. He wants your attention but not your help. Its how I interpret it but it feels like Peter is laying as much of himself bare for all to see so that he can then piece himself together after finding everything he needs. He is an amazing Artist.
Peter Gabriel = Talent, talent, talent...
I play this regularly on my de-stressing car rides i take , it totally puts me in the zone .
Always loved Peter Gabriel, when I was kid his music was always on the radio , and I always loved it .
