Age 17 in 1991 I was totally captured by the video and the sound. About to leave foster care as soon as I turned 18 to go it alone as a young adult into the unknown big wide world to live independently. Every lonely but strong purposeful stride Shara took as she walked those streets to the bitter sweet happy sad sound was symbolic of me at that time. It moved me back then and still moves me when I hear it today age 50. Still navigating through the streets of life. But then again, aren't we all.

But what scares me more... THAT IT IS at least 30 yrs ago now, when i just turned to a young adult. Where did time go? But glad for THAT experience...

0:43 Grant Marshall appears in a burgundy bomber jacket, looking in a shop window. As Shara Nelson passes he turns to follow her with a young child in blue denim, turning left down the side street in the background at 2:18, just as Robert Del Naja appears in a long green coat, standing by the telephone. As Shara passes the shop door RDN turns to follow her, then at 3:17 Andrew Vowles appears in a long dark coat, pushing a trolley, with both remaining in the background until the camera pans forward at 4:12

RIP Dan Kneece. The Steadicam operator for this music video. Dan explaining how he shot this: "This shot was done in the early 90's, long before Segways, with an Arri III, a 3 to 1 Cooke lens (heavy), a 400ft mag, I made it through 6 takes before I was totally exhausted and could do no more.." A legend, a light-hearted and compassionate man has left us forever.

This filmclip always will remind me of my only holiday in the USA.
To be fair, I was a kid. From a naive Aussie family in '98. Now that I realise some of the areas we went to because, why not?. Didn't even have Travellors insurance. Really hope it was some Crips who "found" my Duty Free Winfield Blues.
LA and Mexico. Had a blast, us crazy Aussies. And everyone was chill in the US and Mexico. NO ONE gave us hustle.
Drank Jungle Juice with my brother in Tijuana.... And the worm turned us both....
      Stay Safe.

In my humble opinion, the most beautiful piece of popular music in the last 30 years. It somehow manages to be cold, warm, mechanic and human at the same time. The brilliance of this song is that it combined the tradition of soul music with what was then an amazingly forward-looking style of music without sounding like a gimmick or a cliché. The beat, the samples, the scratching, the strings, Shara Nelson's voice, that heartbreaking vocal and the production... Everything here is about subtlety, balance and everything fitting together at the right time. And it's truly heartbreaking that Shara Nelson didn't have the career she deserved when you know she co-wrote this masterpiece.

One of the many reasons why this is a classic is that no other song has ever sounded remotely like it: the strings, the beat, the lyrics, the scratching and weird percussion sounds, but, most of all, Shara Nelson's unique vocals.
For me, it brings back memories of things that never happened.

Hugely influential music video and a masterpiece trip hip hop single with unforgettable vocals by Shara Nelson. The location on West Pico Blvd is a stone's throw from Skid Row in the opposite direction from where she walks and around this time of the late 1980s and early 1990s this area was off the charts for crime. Could easily lose your life back then and no one would give a sh*t. Video serves as a great time capsule from a bygone era I grew up in.

33 years... and still contemporary! That's what I call MUSIC! Timeless! ❤
And the video is also brilliant, made in one single take. 1917 what?

look at the bright side of things--you have gained a lot of experience since then for example. being happy has nothing to do with age btw.
edit: maybe i'm ready too much into things, but your comment has a bit of depression in it.

jamjamsterjiggidyjay So true there, about the happiness & age. It took me to get to the age of 40 just to find a bit of confidence but now I'm all cool other's bring their issues my way bc "I've been there" .. If only we could learn from others mistakes, life is so short, I can't stand the drama's now being older & hella lot wiser!!
