Age 17 in 1991 I was totally captured by the video and the sound. About to leave foster care as soon as I turned 18 to go it alone as a young adult into the unknown big wide world to live independently. Every lonely but strong purposeful stride Shara took as she walked those streets to the bitter sweet happy sad sound was symbolic of me at that time. It moved me back then and still moves me when I hear it today age 50. Still navigating through the streets of life. But then again, aren't we all.

Timeless and still fresh !!! And also classique! Much better than the comparison betw. the 50s to the 80s or betw. the 60s to the 90s of course.
But what scares me more... THAT IT IS at least 30 yrs ago now, when i just turned to a young adult. Where did time go? But glad for THAT experience...
You just have to replace the old 80s cars with new ones with the PC...it could easily be a NEW song😆!!!

Agree! The feel is very much like an opera aria - she's a gospel/soul singer but she has the soaring power and emotional depth in her voice that someone like Leontyne Price, Renée Fleming or Anna Netrebko can gather into the song, and the orchestra helps lift her to that "farewell" climax around two minutes in. 🎵🎶🙏

One of the many reasons why this is a classic is that no other song has ever sounded remotely like it: the strings, the beat, the lyrics, the scratching and weird percussion sounds, but, most of all, Shara Nelson's unique vocals.
For me, it brings back memories of things that never happened.

And those people in her orbit include the three members of Massive Attack - Robert Del Naja, Andrew Vowles and Grant Marshall
0:43 Grant Marshall appears in a burgundy bomber jacket, looking in a shop window. As Shara Nelson passes he turns to follow her with a young child in blue denim, turning left down the side street in the background at 2:18, just as Robert Del Naja appears in a long green coat, standing by the telephone. As Shara passes the shop door RDN turns to follow her, then at 3:17 Andrew Vowles appears in a long dark coat, pushing a trolley, with both remaining in the background until the camera pans forward at 4:12

In my humble opinion, the most beautiful piece of popular music in the last 30 years. It somehow manages to be cold, warm, mechanic and human at the same time. The brilliance of this song is that it combined the tradition of soul music with what was then an amazingly forward-looking style of music without sounding like a gimmick or a cliché. The beat, the samples, the scratching, the strings, Shara Nelson's voice, that heartbreaking vocal and the production... Everything here is about subtlety, balance and everything fitting together at the right time. And it's truly heartbreaking that Shara Nelson didn't have the career she deserved when you know she co-wrote this masterpiece.

still as raw, pure, heartfelt, talented, beautiful, musical and human as ever. boy do i miss the days when bands were just trying to make the most beautiful music they could, not trying to please their target audiences or produce what they assumed people wanted to hear or what was in fashion back then. probably fair enough that this generation of 90s artists were the last ones to really make serious money in sales from their records. they were unique artists with vision and mission.

Massive attack is something that can't be explained. I saw them in concert in 2007 and I have never felt luckier. They are a musical phenomenon. One of a kind for sure.

This video has so much built in.. Everybody is caring or carrying something. Some are carrying a disability, heavy stuff, a message paper, a cart or just anger. Some are caring for others, like the kissing couple, the man & kid, the friends at the nail salon... and the singer walks through those opposites, without a pause and with an incredible command of her own voice. How could we see this being less than a masterpiece of subliminal messages... Just for that, this video can't ever be forgotten...

This track very cleverly captures such soaring, vulnerable heights of emotion due to the string's key in F major, which was a favourite amongst classical composers, such as Bach. A very intelligent production, which will never lose it's timeless appeal due to its diverse influences that span hip hop, soul, classical and electronica. It really touches deep into the soul of all who behold its achingly-beautiful majesty. A modern masterpiece.
