In this video, the first of a series on the Order of the Garter, England's oldest and most prestigious order of chilvary, I explore the foundation of the order by King Edward III. I look at the king's motivation, the context of the foundation and its establishment within Windsor Castle.

I've seen a lot of content creators discuss the subject of the Order of the Garter. But none have explained it and gone into the depth of the legend as well as you. Thank you!
Glad you appreciated it!
My pleasure, thank you for your kind words.
Yes, you are correct, he is sageant in whatever _sujet_ he is covering for us. This is why I listen to, and hence learn from him. If I see a new upload from him on my wall, I'm straight in.
Simple and clear, yes.
I hope you will do this for each order, including the order of St John.
Children grew up fast in those days 😮 Commanding troops at age 16. Thanks for another outstanding video. Looking forward to the next one. 🛡🏹
Frightening, I have a sixteen year old son - I don't think I would require him to lead an army!!
They definitely weren't today's fragile snowflakes.
Another fantastic video Allan. Always great to hear more about our history. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Glad you enjoyed it, Merry Christmas!
Another EXCELLENT video, Allan!! 💞👍❤💚👏
Fantastic, I love British history.
Hello from California, USA & Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
You've single handedly made history come to life for me Allan, you truly area super antiquary bravo 😊
Thank you very much! Glad you're enjoying my channel 😊
It is so interesting that a garter determined an order of knights! Very clear and deeply fascinating. Windsor Castle has such a long, lived history! Many thanks Allan. I look forward to more enlightenment in this series.
What an insightful video! As an American I have seen the members of the Order of the Garter on both the US and British news but didn’t know the entire story. Ditto for the legend of St. George. What I’ve learned in this video will greatly help my understanding of English history. I could truly watch your videos all day long. You’ve made the Medieval period of history come alive and have inspired me to read everything that I can find about this fascinating period of history. Seasons greetings to you and your family from the US!
Thank you so much for another beautifully illustrated video, I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. But did anyone else think 'Honey, your silk stocking's hanging down'? (1066 and All That, for younger viewers!)
😂
It was well done. Really followed what you were explaining. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is wonderful, Allan! Thanking you for giving us such an extensive history of the Order. I am already looking for the coming videos! I appreciare you and your knowledge very much.
Thank you, all written and ready to go. It is a fascinating subject.
The Order of the Garter was worn by the Royal Canadian Engineers, of which I was a member. No one told us what it meant so I started asking questions. No one had an answer. We didn’t have google so went to a library. There I had to research what I thought was a belt with foreign words on it. I don’t remember where I found the information but it was probably an encyclopedia. That’s when I found out about The Order of the Garter and the inscription said “Honi Soit Qui Mali Pence”. It took some more digging to find out it wasn’t Latin but Norman French. So that all matches up your own research except the translation I got was “Shamed be who thinks evil of it.” I enjoyed the historical content of your video and your translation is most likely the right one. Thanks for posting it.
Hi Allan! Thank you for putting this series together. If the rest of the series is anything akin to this video, we are all in for an enjoyable learning experience.
4:44 The father of Philippe VI, Charles de France, comte de Valois was actually count of Valois. The dukedom of Valois was first created for the younger brother of Charles VI, Louis (the great-grandson of Philippe VI), who is better remembered as the duke of Orléans.
looking forward to more
Glad you liked this!
Fascinating.
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
I LOVE to learn.... You're terrific !!
This is such a good video. You have explained it so well. Thank you so much, you make history come alive.
Thank you, Allan! Masterfully done, as usual. I particularly enjoyed the art.
Chivalry..lots of symbolism.
I confess, I had to chuckle a bit at the idea of "embellishing" a legend relating to a dragon.
😂😂
thank you for this informative video. I look forward to the series.
I just love this and looking for more 😍.Greetings from Finland 🇫🇮💙.
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Oh, this is fantastic Allan. I kept meaning to look up the history of the Order, but never found the time. Brilliantly done as usual-many thanks
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊
I have always been fascinated by the OG. King Edward III is my 19th great grandfather. I would love to see the Garter Hall and St George’s Chapel, many of my ancestors were members of the OG, quite a few in the original instillation. I wonder if any of the original Garter Plates still exist? Thank you.
Great video! Waiting for the follow! 👍🏻👏🏻👍🏻
Already recorded, should land on Wednesday.
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it!
Another wonderful and informative video, Allan. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Will you also be talking about the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight?
Very interesting!
Glad you liked it!
Bravo and well done AGAIN!!! ❤
Thank you 😊
Ironically enough I was thinking about this topic this morning! Awesome timing 😂
Couldn't be better.
I always learn something new from your videos. Thanks!
My pleasure, glad you're enjoying them!
Again an informative and comprahensive video. Even for a non native English speaker. thank you.
Will you also do the order of the thistle?
I liked your Latin pronunciation of "qui" :)
The motto is actually in middle French, not Latin.
@@kathleenstoin671 exactly, which is why I commented thus
Thank you for the clear explanation of the origin of the Order of the Garter and its origin. Beautiful latest Antiquary Magazine with the beautiful prints of Maria and Child. Martha
Amazing video, Allan
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have my Bring Back Medieval Flummery mug to cheer me. Thank you, Allan, it is lovely. ❤ from the USA I want to go back home! Happy Christmas, everyone across the sea. The Chapel Stalls and crests fascinate, can we expect some heraldry? They are so beautiful!
Excellent video! I've always been fascinated by Orders of Chivalry, will you be doing videos on newer chivalric orders such as the Thistle and St Patrick in the future?
thankyou, merci allan... great work as always...

all the very best wishes for 2024...
Excellent but we all know St Edmund should be our Patron Saint rather than share George with Moscow 😊
I couldn’t agree more Chris.
St George is the patron Saint of several places
Thank you Allan..you are my favourite history channel over YT. I am from India and I wish I could subscribe to your magazine. I would love the printed copies. maybe someday :)
Ο Γιώργος - George, my father's name, and that most Greekest of names. My Φιλόλογος - Greek language master once told me that Giórgos comes from two compounds: Η Γη - the Earth and ώργος - from to till. So Earth tiller, or *Peasant.* 😁Interestingly yrþling in Old English is not the earthling we think of in Modern English. This meant the same thing then as old George does in Greek as well, more or less: person of the earth - earth plougher.🌍👨🏽🌾
Could you do a video of the order daughters of the king please?
The drawings of the knights include them holding holding a board with armourial escutcheons on them. Do these represent their ancestors?
4:50 count of Valois ,not Duke.
Looks likely to be a rich fund of stuff.
you said that the story might originate with the countess of salisbury who lost a garter, the you go on to say this is unlikely because at the time only women wore garters. So, was the countess a man?
I said men wore garters.
