In this video I look at the history of the Little Diamond Crown Queen Victoria commissioned in 1870 and its purpose and use and the inspiration for it in two other crowns - the 1761 Diamond Nuptial Crown of Queen Charlotte and the 1685 State Crown of Queen Mary of Modena.

When I think of Queen Victoria, I always imagine her wearing this little diamond crown. Quite an affectation but she clearly loved it. And so many diamonds! In most of the statues of her here in Australia she is wearing this little crown. A defining piece of the Victorian age. Thank you so much Allan for yet another detailed look at a crown. You are a crown man!
Hi Allan! I've been waiting for this one. For me, it is impossible to imagine Queen Victoria without that little crown. Even as a small boy, it fascinated me. I recall asking my mother why the lady was wearing such a small crown. Mom simply replied, "son, she was a queen, she could wear whatever she wanted." Mother was nothing if not practical and direct!
😂😂😂
I have seen Queen Victoria's small Crown at the Tower of London, stunning. Also i once read that the Imperial State Crown gave her migraine headaches so that's why she had the smaller Crown made. Thanks for another excellent video👑

@paullinegibson4773, you need some help or at least English lessons
My husband and I were recently in London and toured the Tower, where the Crown Jewels are kept. We saw this beautiful little crown. It was wonderful and I was thrilled to actually get to see it!!
Thank you for this wonderful story!
I think the small diamond crown is very iconic. It's simple, and looks stunning.
What a beautiful small crown. It suited Queen Victoria so much and it is iconic. I cannot imagine anyone else wearing it as it was so much Victoria's crown. Some items have such emotions attached to them. A bit like when they were sorting out a crown for Queen Camilla, it had to be a very diplomatic decision. Thanks for another great video Allan. ❤
Thanks Allan, another excellent video.
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Gorgeous. Look at the diamonds.
I was so hoping that Her late Majesty would have taken to wearing this when the Imperial State Crown became too heavy for her.
I had the same hope.
Honestly, I cannot imagine anyone else wearing it besides Victoria. It’s so iconically HERS.
@@KristenK78ThetI
I thought much the same
I think Victoria would’ve let Elizabeth II wear it with pride :-)
Very interesting, many thanks!
Always a pleasure to hear your posts. The Hanoverian crown was wee! Barely big enough for a dolls head.
Consider how huge the hair was in the last 18th century too. Must have been like a bauble in a christmas tree.
Another quite fascinating bit of history, Allan. Thank you! It's good to know the crown still exists, and is intact.
Glad you liked it!
Such a pretty, dainty crown!! 💞❤👑
Thank you again sir! ❤
Queen Victoria’s Diamond Crown has always been my favourite of all the crowns worn by previous Queens. I hope we see the Princess of Wales wearing it, when she becomes Queen in due time.
No I don’t think the POW should wear this.
I believe she will wear the George IV diadem to the state opening when the time comes. And the Girls of GB&I for state occasions.
I hope so it’s gorgeous.
Always informative, Allan. Thanks very much. Best to you and your family. Pat
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed it 😊 .
I find the adventures of famous jewels thoroughly fascinating. Queen Ena (Victoria Eugenia) of Spain also had a small diamond crown doubtlessly inspired by the ones noted in this excellent posting. I wonder what became of it.
Probably destroyed Ena wasn't very popular in Spain
@@pedanticradiator1491 when she left, in 1931, she left with her fabulous jewel collection. Queen Sofía & Queen Letizia have been photographed wearing some of them.
I am very much looking forward to this particular edition. I have become known among my friends for having a small collection of miniature "coffee table books" - which get more attention during cocktails than you’d ever imagine. lol.
I wonder if you’d be tempted to consider the Imperial Crown of India - worn just once by George V at his Durbar proclamation as Emperor of India. It is much the most elegant and graceful of the crowns in the Jewel House I feel. Incidentally, isnt there some story about Queen Victoria’s little crown having been temporarily lost, only to be rediscovered in a boarded up cupboard at Buckingham Palace during George V’s reign? I may be wrong - thank you for another engaging and informative video.
Yes , and would you please consider giving details on the Darbar itself too ...❤
Charles III needs to start wearing it.
🤩 It’s gorgeous too and yet another reminder that ‘ size isn’t every thing ’ . I’m more partial to the refractive properties of 💎 White Diamonds that often reveal a dazzling array of various inherent colors.
Really nice, informative film. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very interesting!
I remember in the late 1990's. The Crown Jewels were brought to my hometown of Milwaukee. They were on display at a popular mall here in Milwaukee. They were replicas of the real crown jewels. The real ones weren't allowed to leave the UK. I remember reading that. Anyways, I remember reading that Queen Victoria had the small crown 👑 made for herself. And I think with her own money 💰. The Imperial Crown 👑 was too heavy for the short, small queen 👑. That's what I remember reading. Does anyone know if I'm right. What about the nice person who posted this info about the queen 👑. Wearing the small crown 👑. I'm a proud, black, Christian man who has lived in America all my life. But I've been a big fan of the British royal family. On and off 📴 I've read info, and saw things on TV 📺. And Googled about them a lot after the sad death of the late, great Princess Diana. God bless tthe King Charles lll 👑, his family. And the entire country of the United Kingdom. And the other lands that are under the reign of King Charles 👑.
What a pretty little crown. These little crowns must have had anchoring points for hairpins, otherwise how on earth did they stay of the Queen’s head!?
Yes hairpins or hatpins I would think
I absolutely adore this crown, so very petite ♥️♥️ xx
Thank you for the fascinating explanation of this iconic crown.
Thank you, Allan.
Thank you for this, i loved it.😊🏴
I’ve seen this many times at the Tower of London, it’s my favourite except for a similar sized one of hers designed by her husband with sapphires that is in the Victoria and Albert museum, definitely worth a visit, the jewel section there is astonishing!
such a pretty thing!
How did she hold it on? It looks precariously perched! And, when did Garrards become the Royal Jewellers? You mentioned Rundell & Bridge in a previous video, Whatever, it's a beautiful little thing. Thank you for the video, as ever.
Hair pins I reckon, not entirely sure. Rundell and co lost the royal warrant to Garrards in 1843.
If she kept her hair long, I can guarantee that a bun pinned at the top of the head would give that little crown an almost bombproof anchor point.
As the little crown was sitting on veiling, it is highly likely that it was sewn onto the veil. Being lightweight, the little crown is more comparable to a tiara in terms of how it sits on the head. When modern royals wear tiaras, the tiara is often sewn into the hair with thread the same colour as the wearer's hair. In addition, the royal hairdresser will weave strands of the wearer's hair around the circle base, and then pin the hair, for added security. Tiara hairdos are a specialised skill. Many tiaras also have short updo combs sewn onto the base, to lock the tiara into position, (although these combs are never shown in official photos of such jewels). Modern tiara wearers can't just lift their tiaras off their heads at the end of their big occasion!
Fascinating! I always wondered just how the tiaras stayed on! I’m American and I find all this history to be so amazing!
@@a24-45. There are stories of Elizabeth II putting on the Girls of GB & I as she walked down the hall. I expect that is an exaggeration, but the thing was not sewn to her hair!
Exquisite .
I've always wondered about that small crown and how it was attached to Queen V's head. Have you ever considered covering the newish theory that Prince Albert didn't die of Typhoid as was the story for years, but that he had one of the auto immune disorders affecting the digestive track like Crohn's? That would be fascinating if it fits into your remit so to speak.
Interesting never been a fan of Victoria but good to know about this. Excellent Antiquary magazine this month.
Glad you found this interesting, and glad you're enjoying the latest magazine issue!
Queen Victoria was highly indignant about having to relinquish Queen Charlottes jewels to Hanover, claiming that many of the items were her favourite pieces "essential to the dignity of The Crown and of The Queens person".
Sometimes it's easy to forget that these important and iconic personages were just people. Victoria obviously went into such a deep depression that she could hardly function, and this was at a time when there were no medications, professional counselors, or inpatient centers. I never knew why the little crown had been made, but it's both sad and culturally interesting that it was designed to wear while in mourning.
It's so cute, like a baby crown
Nice vídeo, Allan
Thank you. It’s so tiny and dainty 🙏🙏👵🇦🇺👑
Great video thanks Allan - greetings from New Zealand 🇳🇿👍👍
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Empress-Queen Alexandra was the best when dooning royal regalia and royal dress attire. She was simply regal superior.
As was Queen Mary, George V's wife
Tis wonderful to behold these treasures of our Heritage.
No matter what befalls us , the Glory or the British Crown sustains us ordinary men & women.
It is our Heritage , rather like our Grand Parents linage, to remember & reflect upon these glories of the past.....for they shall not occur again!
As we plunge, ever deeper, into the mire of War & deprivation it is well to remember a more glorious time when we did NOT question the Grandeur of our peers.
And simply were content to live according to our station in life !
Bryan Hardy Australia.
I believe she had the smaller crown made because she suffered with migraines and the state crown was so heavy
I'd wear it every day if it were mine.
It's beautiful.
very interesting indeed-a great amount of fascinating detail-i wonder if you know when the modern trend for wearing the full regalia at the state opening of parliament started ?did it start with her late majesty queen Elizabeth ii? I'm under the impression that Edward vii, George v and George vi never wore any crown after their respective coronations or the 1911 Durbar
It’s a continuous practice since the Middle Ages. In peace time every sovereign has worn the parliamentary robe and crown of some sort at the state opening, except when a state opening occurs before their coronation - then they wear robe and no crown. The photos on the internet of Edward VII and George V in robe only were before their respective coronations. George VI is an anomaly as during much of the war the regalia wasn’t available for use.
@@allanbarton i have an engraving of the 1903 state opening of parliament by Edward vii taken from the illustrated london news and he's not wearing a crown just some sort of tricorn hat-thats why i asked my original question
It was also said that Queen Victoria had a history of migraines and couldn’t handle wearing the heavy Imperial State Crown or the other heavier crowns as a result- so the little crown was designed to accommodate her needs.
She, was very overweight so any effort or anything that restricted her like a heavy crown, would make it difficult for her to feel steady
When a thing can be both powerful and cute
Ive also seen photos of Queen Mary wearing this crown
The tiny crown is so iconically Victoria’s Crown, I simply cannot imagine anyone else wearing it. Remember why Camilla didn’t wear the Queen Mother’s crown for the Coronation? Like that, but moreso.
She suffered migraines but was obligated to wear a crown. So, she had this one made. Anything heavier left her bedridden for days with debilitating migraines.
Help me! I was at the Tower Of London and saw the most perfect crown. Small, purple velvet. And eack stone was perfection. Diamonds and rubies and emeralds,oh my! And I thought it said something about India and never was worn
The Imperial crown of India, it was worn by George V at the Delhi Durbar in 1911.
It's not the size that counts, It's what you subjugate with it that counts!
imagine 'modern' monarchs just not doing anything for 10 years nowdays? QV shouldve got off her fat *** and done the duties she was expected to do. A King would not have been allowed to crumple up in mourning like she did. Considering this and how she treated her children i dont know why she is so revered. She lasted a long time but it was the people around her who got things done while she mourned in black.
Try moving on, you sound very upset 🙄
Today, Queen Victoria would probably be diagnosed with a severe case of chronic depression. Poor woman.
Surprised Queen Elisabeth II never wore this crown.
I'm going to get my a crown just like Victoria's it's so pretty. One day when God see fit.
I read she had it made due to having migraine headaches and the original was too heavy
How did she keep it on her head?
👑
Queen Victoria was an unfaithful monarch who let her personal life interfere with her duties. This nearly caused the downfall of the monarchy.
with that small crown, how did they managed to make it stay in place on her head without falling down?
❤
Very nice and informative video on a piece of Regalia that is inseparably associated with Queen Victoria yet little is published about it.
Note that although as Queen Regnant Victoria could have used colored stones on her small "State Crown" substitute, it is set with white diamonds exclusively. I'm sure that reflected Victoria's widowhood, as colored stones are contrary to mourning etiquette.
Crowns used by the Sovereign may have colored stones, but those intended for Queen Consorts are set with white jewels only--diamonds and pearls. The queens' crowns of the 20th century are made of platinum rather than gold to further emphasize this "purity".
How did the women keep those small crowns on their heads?
The royal yarmulke .
Why don't the Royals wear it? History is important!
Isn't this crown known as the "Fairy Queen" Crown?
I think that’s simply because Benjamin Disraeli ( who was Victorias Prime Minister at the time) flattered Victoria by calling her “Our Fairy Queen”. So her little crown would be her Fairy Crown.
The tax payers should wear crowns....since all these crowns were paid fro by them.... 😡
Maybe you should start the trend. 😂
Although I know it was made for a reigning monarch like Victoria, I think that crown would look great for the coronation of the future Queen Catherine.
For Charlotte possibly ?
@@cathyblackhall5237 Charlotte will only be Queen if George dies childless
It was worn by Queen Alexandra consort to Edward V11 and also by Queen Mary
@@EF5Winds of course not !!
@@EF5Winds We ate not talking about coronations ! This is a crown Victoria wore to parliament and other special occasions, Victoria was actually crowned with the imperial state crown and not St Edwards crown as it was too large for her.
Are the crown jewels on the coffin during the funeral just a loan? Because the death of the monarch make the heir to the new Sovereign. And the crown jewels are now his crown jewels.
And since when the monarch attend to the funeral of his predecessor? Because you men that was sometimes not considerate.
@@EF5Winds That's very interesting . Thank you 🙂
i don’t understand the obsession with diamonds… they look like quarts except slaves are forced to die for them
gross rich people shit i guess
