In this video, I explore one of the most enigmatic jewels in the English Tudor royal collection and a favourite of Elizabeth I-the so-called Three Brothers. Made in the 1380s for a sixteen-year-old boy who would go on to be John the Fearless, Duke of Burgundy, it passed from the Burgundian Court through many hands; it was once war booty before finally falling into English hands as a consequence of royal debt and leaving England again to pay for Charles I's war against his own Parliament. A medieval talisman and one of the most glorious examples of late Gothic craftsmanship, it mysteriously vanished in 1650.
