High praise indeed I think, given you compared it to a turntable costing twice as much as the EVO2 and it held its own. Thank you for a very interesting and informative review
Excellent video as always Paul. I'd be interested to hear your opinion on the new Project T2 Superphono, especially the differences in the built in phono stage and something external.
Excellent. I have a trusty old Debut Carbon Esprit SB (with the clear perspex block platter). But i upgraded the sub platter to the aluminium one and stuck on a Goldring 1042 (with an Origin Live Cartridge Enabler in-between). It sings like a happy bird. I suspect the Evo 2 performs similarly. Meaning that a meaningful upgrade for me would be something that costs at least double. Would be nice, but not essential at the moment.
Looks good. And sounds delicious from what you say. I have Rega Planar 1 and the phono stage you recommended (Modi) which sound very good to my ears. Suspect this would be a good step up.
Hi Audiphile Man, as usual, an engaging & informative & witty review; keep them coming! I do have one question, though, when reviewing, what amp/s and speakers do you use? What’s your preferred listening experience? Stay well.
Great video, as always. I have the EVO 1 with several upgrades: Acrylic platter, aluminum subplatter, Sweep It E, Q-Up, and the Power Box S2 power supply (I didn't find the damping feet necessary since I mainly use it with headphones). Knowing that you tried these upgrades back in the day... How would this new EVO 2 compare to my upgraded EVO (using the same cartridge, of course)?
Well, this is an out of the box review with no mods featured. But if I added the same mods which produced the same enhancements? At a guess? The EVO 2 should sound better because it’s starting at a sonically elevated level. Above the EVO 1.
@@TheAudiophileMan Thanks for your reply! I probably didn’t express myself correctly, as it’s not my native language (I'm Spanish). What I actually wanted to ask is which one sounds better (in your opinion), an EVO 2 out of the box or an EVO 1 with the mentioned upgrades. Thanks a lot for the videos and your response!
No idea because I haven’t done that test. But you’re paying a lot more for the upgraded 1. And many of the same mods can be applied to the 2 when funds permit.
@@TheAudiophileMan Thanks for replying. I know, I know, it's more expensive, and that’s exactly why I’m asking! I already own the EVO 1 with the upgrades, and I’d like to know if I should consider getting the EVO 2, or if I should stick with what I have (maybe consider selling the first one...). I’d like to know if I’d really notice a substantial improvement by selling the first one and getting the second (after applying the upgrades).
@@ismadelrorandom viewer here, I suspect that your modded Evo 1 will sound more similar to the Evo 2, your upgrades will certainly elevate the detail element in the sound, bringing it closer. But the clear platter might bring a slightly different characteristic than the Evo 2's aluminium platter. I doubt buying an Evo 2 is worthwhile, in this instance.
I didn't A-B the two so I'm not sure. Saying that, the EVO 2 uses a lot of Pro and Pro-like features as part of the upgrade so it's going to be very close, at the very least.
Hi Paul. As a package is the key word , which comes with an interesting question . The Cartridge update which in the case of the new rega P3 has recently happened, is the playing field becoming more crowded , I accept time is of the essence but if you could have substituted the picket for the gold ring , how far up the food chain do you think it could go ? . Finally with deep sorry I have to confirm after some 54 years in the hifi hobby , I have to admit I’ve never been able to hand lower a stylus on to a record . Yes a bombshell to be true but there you are doing this thing I have never managed to master , and boy have I tried . But after several records becoming unplayable, I have to accept defeat . 😢. Kind regards as always 👍
the P8 to the P10 aproaches what used to be 70´s quality , i still use almost daily my Sl-1310 from 79 and still have the needle for it but last month was the last and not availabvle for sale in good condition ,i have a Ortofon 2Mblack for it when this one worns out, but the cartridge i´ll keep it ,maybe someday i´ll find an new stylus fot it, this new cartridges even expensive ones are not like they used to built them, also the stylus now are not as in before the 2000´s
I did something that people rarely do and auditioned my turntable. Between project and Rega and being honest rp1 with a carbon is a joyful experience. The project kit pound for pound held its own until Rega launched the nd cartridges. I purchased the Planar 3 rs and I defy anyone to come close to the rs for anything like the same money.
Looks ghastly, even for a budget design! Besides, you'd be better off starting with a Rega 8 or virtually any Technics deck. That way, since there isn't much room for improvement on them, you won't necessarily be bothered about thoughts of an upgrade.

What a great insight!

Nice review. How does the Evo II compare to the NAD C 588 (which you have reviewed a few years ago)?
Excellent as the NAD is, I'd go for the EVO 2.

Such a good review I book marked your website as well
Have you thought about reviewing the Pro-Ject RPM 3? Interesting design. I would be interested.
Done the 1 but not the 3 thus far but will consider it: theaudiophileman.com/modding-turntable-pro-ject-rpm-3/

So this or the planar3?

I almost bought 2 versions of evo or a similar one was Pro, but on Black Friday I managed to buy evo 1 for 368 £:)

Use to own the previous evo for 2 years, was my entry to vinyl world, just change for a sl-1200gr2 and it's now day and night
That’s a 4000 pounds turntable!
Nope! Give me a REGA P3 Anniversary Edition anyday.

Gee wizz that will go well with the guru tom evans and his master phono preamp.
CDs are still better.

Ghastly? i think you have strange tastes
Says "looks ghastly" then suggests a Technics. Also the Rega P8 is 3 times as much. Thanks for your input.
remarkable, i think it was the worst turntable i ever listened all my life i could have built it at school when i was 12
What turntable do you have today ?
