Just wanted to say thank you. I upgraded the sub platter, the acrylic, added some (cheap) tpe pucks, and upgraded from the ranier to the moonstone, and my living room has never sounded more alive. I sincerely appreciate your content, and have now found direct benefit from it. Kudos and thanks!
I bought this model of turntable last year and now I am thinking about an upgrade. So far I have only bought a Cork it but after your advice I decided on an bigger upgrade....acryil it and alu sub plate.. You made a very good video and it helped me a lot ... you are one of those they know what they are talking about.Thanks. Good luck.
I can vouch for the power supply upgrade. I had a hum problem with my carbon evo. The new PSU cured it. The noise floor is reduced and there seems to be more clarity. Well worth it.
Excellent review. Really appreciated the detail and assessment of each upgrade. The various tweaks that vinyl makes possible is a big part of why I love it; and why some I know hate it. 🙂
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this! I'm sure you enjoyed it a bit too! Lol. I just got the aluminum sub platter for mine and literally said the same descriptor that it sounded more "balanced"! Thank you again, your accuracy on this is very much appreciated! I wish you the best and success with your channel too!
As an American “modder” I went acrylic mat, aluminum sub platter and Sumiko Moonstone cartridge: It’s like a whole new listening experience and was fun to tinker on along the way. I bought the clamp-it and really only use it on a really thin, older vinyl.
Finally bit the bullet and got the Ortofon 2M Blue (hopefully it won't get noticed by the management). The difference to my humble system is simply astonishing. (Carbon Evo + 30yr old Sony amp + QAcoustic 3030i). So much extra detail, clarity and liveliness! Best £130 I've spent in a long while. The problem I have now is finding the time to listen to my favourite albums all over again. Subplatter next, I think. Thanks Paul.
Thank you for this video! I considered my time watching very well spent. I had no idea there were so many available upgrades and what upgrades had actual value. You answered all these questions. I wish you continued success.
Would love to see you do a video about upgrading the tone arm on your Evo2. I am pretty new to all this. I got my Evo about 1.5 years ago and have done all the upgrades you talked about and liked over time. It’s my first foray into a more upscale deck, but I am so pleased with what a difference the upgrades made especially in the two platter upgrades. Would really be interested on your thoughts about tone arms and what to look for, differences it can make, etc. Thanks for a great channel.
Bought a project carbon debut. After two years 45 RPM went South. Now i have the Pro-ject Evo. Installed a diamond cut aluminum sub platter upgrade , acrylic platter , and bought a Sumiko moving coil Songbird cart. Wow ! Ohh, also a BOTW S- booster.
In the US, it comes with the Sumiko Renier cartridge. Which you can upgrade the stylus to the moonstone. Or for a further upgrade, switch to the Amethyst cartridge
I have the older debut carbon and taking your advice I have started with upgrading. I was a bit skeptical but I started with the power supply and I was surprised at the difference. Actually I was amazed. Next was a Michell record clamp and that was another improvement. I will go for a cork mat next. Dont know yet about the platter and sub platter but I will keep an open mind. Thanks for the advice. Love the Channel.
Thanks for this and the many other videos you produce. I’ve collected records and have been interested in Hi-Fi since inheriting my older sisters Fidelity record player and a copy of Hits of ‘82! I’m only now in a position to buy myself a decent set of components and it’s been a pleasure listening to your insights…not to mention eagerly awaiting each video to see which albums you have on your shelves! Much gratitude.
I went a bit far with my upgrades to my Evo: acrylic platter, aluminium sub platter, isoacoustic pucks on top of isoacoustics board, black 2M ortofon cart, Kecces P8 LPS, yellow bird hex mat, Q40 reference cables, Herbies labs dampeners on the tone arm 😂
Superb. agree with one of your final points about the arm. The back of the arm is not carbon ( where the counter weight attaches) and is prone to breakage. They need to sort that before anyone had the confidence to outlay another £400. + pounds on the upgrades .
Thanks for this video, Paul. I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on these upgrades. I currently have the Pro-Ject Debut Carbon (about 5 years now) and have replaced the platter with the Acryl-it, replaced the 2M Red with the 2M Blue and purchased a Michell Engineering Clamp (all worthwhile upgrades for me). My next upgrade would involve better isolation (like a Ground-it or perhaps a think butcher block as many have suggested). I'm also thinking of purchasing a Tube Box S2 phono preamp (my Sansui B-2101/C-2101 amp and preamp and ADS L1290 speakers produce a very sweet sound so am curious how the Tube Box S2 would affect the sound). The one thing you mentioned that had me thinking how it would affect the sound is the high power-it. I can see it affecting the speed stability which would impact wow and flutter, but that's it. It does not touch the electric signal path from the cartridge to the preamp so am not sure how it would impact the sound quality. Can you elaborate further?
Hi Craig - I find that bigger, more powerful, better *quality* power supplies produce a more confidant sound. Weak supplies give a sense of stress and strain. As if the music is running out of puff. So bass has weight and mass instead of sounding like it needs a good dinner down it. A quality supply will also reject mains noise (a massive problem that too many people either ignore, denigrate or are unaware of). Get rid or reduce that and the general noise floor lowers allowing fine and subtle detail to get though.
I have had the Rega range in my sights for so long and must admit I was blinkered. This has given me a lot to mull over and might sway me to get the Carbon EVO. Loved your clear break down.
Thank you for a great video and covering so many options. A friend gave me the Acrylic platter and it was such a huge change I have been wondering about other things especially the sub platter. I did upgrade the stylus and got a Ground-it E. So nice to get things that you can actually hear a difference.
Although this video was done 2 years ago about a year ago when I purchased my EVO. I was just thinking about some upgrade. I am glad for your review. Two of the items you mentioned I wasn't thinking about purchasing because I didn't it would be a good purchase the feet and clamp. Thanks for saving me some cash.
Super helpful video! In the market for a turntable replacement and had my heart set on a Rega but now it is not sourced by the vendor that built my theatre system that includes KEF reference speakers and surround. They recommended the Debut Carbon EVO as an option and I've been on the fence. Even was/am considering the Rega 3 special edition that is more than double the price in USD (but LOTS of extras in 2023) and just getting it from another supplier though this eliminates the great support I get from current vendor. Where I am now (and your video reinforces my direction) is I've ordered the EVO in white gloss, am adding an acrylic platter, and changing out the cartridge for a Sumiko Moonstone cartridge. I was looking at the the 2M Blue or 2M bronze but Sumiko is the brand coming with the TT so I decided to keep the cartridge in the same family. What I hadn't added and will given your recommendation is the power source and the aluminum sub platter. With all this the total still comes out about $500 USD less than the Rega 3. I'm hopeful all this is a good decision. Thanks!
I had a Ortofon 2m Blue on my old table (a 1974 Philips GA 212) as well as the cork mat, I just moved them over. The sub platter is probably the first part to be switched out followed by the power supply. I am a little on the fence on the acrylic platter. I do plan on restoring the Philips and doing some upgrading by switching from RCA cables to RCA jacks.y
Very nice video! I’m in the process of buying my very first turntable and I decided on the Evo. Now my next step is to find what amplifier and speakers to use. Do you happen to have a video of what you pair your Evo with?
I watched this video after i did my first upgrade run for my Evo Carbon Debut. And i fully agree. I went with the bronze stylus, alu sub platter, acryl platter. And it is like a whole new table. Pulling out details that i have not noticed before. The next round i'll get the base and high power supply. Thanks for the great video!
Hey Max, Did you replaced the cartridge also when putting on the Bronze or did you use the catridge from the red ? I read it is possible but you can't unlock the true potential of the bronze without the bronze/black cartridge ?
The Power-It psu is well worth the meagre outlay, just don't tell Pro-Ject though lol. It brought a substantial lift to my Pro-Ject Xperience SB deck. Great stuff as usual Paul.
Thanks for the videos. I would love to see a similar upgrade video for the Pro-Ject Debut Pro turntable. It would be interesting to see how the various upgrades perform on their latest table.
Picked up a Debut Carbon DC for £99 on a deal with Richer Sounds. So I splashed out in the power supply, sub platter and acrylic platter. All in I spent £350 which is pretty insane for what I ended up with. Gonna ask the wife for a 2M blue for Christmas.
Hi, I have 2 questions 1. What upgrade do you think is the most important of the entire video, and if so what would you recommend to start with? 2. Does the ACRYLIC brace have a problem because it is higher?
Hi Paul. Great videos! Today, I purchased a Pro-ject Debut Pro and I can't wait for it to arrive! Quick question: I'd like to use the Cork-it mat for further dampening, but was hoping you could let me know if I can use it on the Pro without the need to change the VTA. Grateful for you advice. Thanks!
Really enjoyed this video. I don’t have a Pro-Ject but I’m sure some of the upgrades would be relevant to my system. I have been considering a acrylic platter for my Systemdek for a while so may try the SRM one which is under £60.
I have systemdek with profile arm and the glass platter. Some say the acrylic doesn't make much difference. Am curious as to weather you tries one and how it turned out? My bearing oil has never been changed, do you have any suggestions on a good oil to use? Thanks.
Did all exept the acrylic platter. i want to keep the original platter because of its weight. together with the alu sub platter i thought it will do a better job in reducing the wow flutter. instead, i apply the Acrylic Mat. im very happy with the result...
cheers for making these, essential to someone like me, i'm getting a kick pretending you're techmoan's estranged brother! you have a simmilar manner lol
Thank you very much for the detailed overview of all the upgrades and how they perform. I am currently considering this as my first & probably last turntable. With that said, if I was to spend an extra $200 - $250 which upgrade(s) would yield the best initial results? Maybe the sub platter and cork-it together, the platter by itself, or the stylus and cork-it combo? For a bit of background this will played in a recording studio with a fully treated room through studio monitors. I haven't decided on a preamp yet... Any advice would be appreciated. Cheers, Greg
very helpful video. thank you !! I've been looking at different upgrades and was unsure which were worth it what do you think about the alu sub-platter and the acrylic-it in combination ? is it worth doing both ?
Really enjoyable video. I have followed a similar route you describe (with the addition of an arm rewire) with a 1986 Planar 3 I bought from new. I think your comments at the end are spot on. Laying out serious money every few years is a hard sell to the domestic controller. You are right to praise Pro-Ject for embracing the modular approach to upgrading.
I only spent $260 on my Victrola T-1 turntable but the upgrade cost me alot first is cartridge Ortofon 2mm 250 black cost $999 dollars second is cable Morrow audio cost $600 plus. My next upgrade is power cord and base.
Just bought this tt after watching your videos on it. Thanks for taking the time to post such a worth while video. The modding will start soon. I put the power it on straight away and noticed a difference. I will do the platters and cartridge throughout the year. I do have one question though and it’s about cartridges. The blue is the obvious plug and play choice but what about the at cartridges such as 95ml and 540ml. Would they offer better performance than the blue. Thanks again for posting this. You have a new subscriber.
Only just seen this! Great video. I have a debut carbon and already have the acrylic platter. However, what would be the order you would recommend in modifying? What would be first and the order? That would help a lot. Many thanks and keep up the good work!!
First, great list of upgrades. I will definitely be upgrading to the aluminum sub-platter and the acrylic platter. Question about the 2M Blue cartridge. I have read other reviews that say it can be a little to bright on some systems (mine already suffers from that). What are your thoughts on this?
There may be other variables involved which might be causing that brightness issue - I certainly didn't experience it when installing it on a neutral/balanced hifi chain. I would look elsewhere for the problem.
@@TheAudiophileMan yeah, my room accoustics are not great. As far as the 2M Blue being a little bright, it is something I have read about in more than one review. Still, it's probably a good improvement over the stock 2M Red.
I fancied something different so in November I changed my 2M blue for a Sumiko Olympia cartridge. At first I thought I had made a terrible, expensive, mistake but over time it has become absolutely fantastic and I doubt if I’ve reached the 30 hour run in period mentioned in reviews. Highly recommended!
Generally speaking, there's no difference because the platters are the same thickness. In terms of fractions, there is :) My default, basic, 'as is' EVO is ever so slightly out of alignment but not enough to cause sonic issues. Yours might be different, though. Mine has been around the houses a bit and thrown around by many couriers so it might be that. Hence, mine is slightly and I mean slightly high at the rear. Replacing the default platter with the acrylic and then removing the felt mat actually improves the levelling a tad. I emphasise, I'm talking fractions here. So yea. Basically, don't worry about it. If anything though, the acrylic platter might actually help.
Bought the new Debut Pro... wanted the better arm. Already got an Orto 2M LVB 250 to go on. Next will be the alu subplatter and acrylic main platter. Then the power supply and the iso deck. Should be fun! Why wait to upg if you can afford to?
@@blejzerosamigos6115 The X2 has opposition thats better for the price, Rega P6 for one. There is nowhere near enough difference from the Pro to the X2 for it to be worthwhile... the cheaper deck allows for bigger cart budget which matters more to me
This sounds like it ends up nearby to the Fluance RT85 out of the box. Are you able to compare those two systems? Would love to see a similar video for the Fluance RT85.
It took me forever to get the 81 and 83 in for review because Fluance has no UK presence. I did ask for a 85 but maybe the company thought it’s review time had passed by the time I was ready to write about it? Not sure.
What would also be interesting is a speaker cable upgrade review. Some speaker cables are just jaw droppingly expensive but would be intriguing to know what sound improvements could be gained by upgrading to the more "affordable" speaker cables on a moderately priced hifi system...
Cables make poor video content - it's a bit like a computer gamer making videos on text adventures (if you're familiar with those). It just doesn't work. Which is why I have my website resource that's packed with cable reviews. Check out this link and have a browse: theaudiophileman.com/category/hifi-reviews/cable-review/
Great review...I have this table and have been looking at ways to reduce static. Do you find the acrylic platter helped in that regard? Or for that matter, the cork mat? Thanks.
Static is a separate thing, in my experience at any rate and can be tackled using an anti-static gun such as a ZeroStat or, if you have the cash, the more efficient DeStat from Furutech. Careful vinyl storage is a help too.
@@TheAudiophileMan Thanks. I do everything right from a storage standpoint (including upgraded inner sleeves, etc) just get a lot of crackle I think due to dry air in the house (especially in winter). Antistatic brush helps, and recently set up a humidifier. I have heard varying results of reduced static due to leather, cork, acrylic slipmats so figured it was worth an ask. I appreciate the suggestions....been considering the zerostat.
@@bobellis75 I certainly think that acrylic won’t hurt. I mean, I’d buy it for the sound first but when I tested it, static was never an issue so you may find that a secondary benefit.
@@TheAudiophileMan I have been eyeing that acrylic platter for a while...and the upgraded subplatter. Mostly for sound but yes if static alleviation is a positive side effect, even better. Found this video very helpful by the way, in breaking down the Pro-Ject upgrades.
Another question 😊 Having watched a few of your videos, if I were to follow all of your upgrade recommendations, am I better off sourcing the Evo or a RPM1 ? Whilst the EVO offers switched speed, I suspect I will only be playing 33’s for the most part so am thinking it’s down to sound quality once upgrades are in place. Thanks in advance
Hi, great video, really informative - thanks. I have a Pro-Ject Evo with Sony STR-DH190 & Q3010i speakers (currently using the in built pre amp/Phono input on the Sony) My question is, would I be better upgrading the turntable (thinking particularly of the aluminium sub platter, power & stylus) - or - putting that money to a different use by either purchasing a separate phono amp and/or upgrade to my amplifier first? I think my amp was around £200 so would look to sell it on & spend maybe around £400-500 mark. Any recommendations welcome, be it for phono amp / main amp or upgrades mentioned. Cheers!
Great video! Thanks for the detailed exposition. It’s a shame that YT’s algorithm didn’t show it to me earlier. I have one question though, I’ve heard that adding the acrylic subplatter will mess up the vertical tracking angle, did you have to tinker with the VTA after upgrading?
Generally speaking, there's no difference. In terms of fractions, there is :) The sub platter is exactly the same in terms of thickness so doesn't change the VTA. As for the main platter though? My default, basic, 'as is' EVO is ever so slightly out of alignment but not enough to cause sonic issues. Yours might be different, though. Mine has been around the houses a bit and thrown around by many couriers so it might be that. Hence, mine is slightly and I mean slightly high at the rear. Replacing the default platter and then removing the felt mat actually improves the levelling a tad. I emphasise, I'm talking fractions here. So yea. Basically, don't worry about it. If anything though, the acrylic platter right actually help. I know the sub platter was the main subject here but I thought I'd add more thoughts on the main platter, in case the acrylic upgrade was also on your list.
@@TheAudiophileMan The acrylic upgrade is on my list, and VTA was a concern to me. I even order the VTA shim (VTA it). But have not install it yet, and after reading your reply I, I probably won’t. I will think about it.
i did everything right, got just the same turntable, but when my vinil is on, it starts to play the disc slower after a while. What could it be? can someone help
How would you compare the new “Evo 2” with the Pro-Ject X1? Do you think that it would be worth it to buy the X1 from the get go or you would go down the upgrade path?
Apologies for a new comment on an old video but am keen to ask the question. Have been undecided on which TT to buy until I saw this video. Went to pull the trigger last night to find there is actually now an EVO2. My question is, am I better off sourcing the EVO 1 and doing the upgrades or buying the Evo 2?? Thanks in advance
No need to apologise and yes, I hope to review the '2' in the future (not sure when so you might have to wait wee bit). Hopefully I can answer your question then.
It is all very, very valuable. Great thanks, sincerely. But very kindly advice, this could have been done in 15 minutes. I have to go to sleep at some stage
Hello. I really enjoy your videos, especially the ones about turntables. i notice many of the tables you review don't have tonearm height adjustments. Is this really an important feature? It seems to me that if it were you would see them on U turn and Project turntables. You also don't see them on Fluance tables but many Audio Teknicas do have them. What say you? Thanks.
Hi Troy - many of the cheaper turntables out there do not allow for VTA adjustments because the feature - in and of itself - would add too much to the build budget. The EVO here, for example, can be adjusted but you need to add 'shims' to raise the arm. You can buy these from Pro-Ject. Rega offers the same service. If a turntable does not offer VTA adjustments, I advise being prepared by measuring any new cartridge and, if possible, undergoing a dealer or home-based demo to make sure the tonearm is level before you buy. This, of course, is also why packages are popular and useful because the bundles cartridge should be an ideal fit for the arm.
Hi Paul, I decided on getting the project debut carbon after watching your review. I also am following your record cleaning process with the disco antistat device. So thanks for helping me out with your videos. I have a really newbie question for you if you don't mind? The debut came with RCA cables with an earth wire in between the two leads. But I bought some other RCA's but they don't have an earth. Do I need to earth, and if so what actually needs to be earthed, and to where? So far all I've got is the turntable, a phono amp, and a Tascam SD-20M for recording my music onto an sd card. Appreciate any help. Thanks.
Some leads include the earth wire in the cable itself (the red one, I think) so you should be covered. If a separate earth cable is suppled, then attach that to the Earth screw you'll find on the rear of the phono amplifier.
Thanks for the reply, and good to know. But, no they didn't come with a ground wire, the original cable did, that's why I was concerned. If I did need one I could probably just buy one, or strip the one between the original cable? I'm still cleaning anyway, following your routine, so nearly there. I'm going to get the upgrades you mentioned also. I appreciate your reviews, and glad I found your channel. Not sure the missus feels the same way though. 🤑😆
curious what you think the difference is between the Debut and the RPM1. in the US they're the same price of $599. people seem to prefer the Debut generally I like the smaller profile of the RPM1. if the sound quality is really different though I'll make due
When you say "Debut" you mean the EVO? I'd lean in its direction, sure. I like the RPM1 there's absolutely nothing wrong with it and it's a fine design that can also be upgraded. If you like the look of the RPM1 then, by all means, go for that. You won't be disappointed. Nevertheless, I think the EVO has the edge.
The 78 rpm is the most important feature of the PJEDC. I'm weighing this table and the Rega 78 which is full y dedicated to 78s @ $700. I have a brand new Ortofon 78 cartridge alresdy, waiting for a 3 speed table which will be dedicated to shellac play. Clearaudio has a 3 speed @ $1600. I own a PJDC with O Blue for new vinyl and a Sony PS 505 which is the table for which PlayStation was named. It is fitted with O Mono for , obviously my 1940s-60s mono collection. Please review these 78rpm opions. Thanks mate!
I wouldn't compare them at all because that wouldn't be the point of upgrading the EVO in the first place. You upgrade the EVO because you have very little cash and certainly not enough to buy a new, more expensive turntable...like the 1500. If you're considering buying a 1500 then you have that money. So the EVO is not the mode to be comparing the 1500 to - it's a whole different level of turntable.
Thanks for the review. After watching I decided to buy the cork it mat. Sound was improved my only issue is when I remove a record the cork mat sometimes sticks to the record. Any idea how I can stop this.
Love the review. I bought previous Debut Carbon DC with phono preamp. During last two months I've changed the sub platter, bought acrylic platter, removed phono preamp from it and bought iFi Zen and cartridge is next🤣 vinyl somehow sucked me in🤦🏻♂️ recently I discovered that axle on motor has strange thrust clearance. I can lift the small belt pulley up around 5mm and side play is around 0,3mm. I didn't found any forum related to this. Has the EVO motor same "issue" so I can sleep calmly as it should be like that, or I have the real issue? Thank you.
@@TheAudiophileMan hi, so no play in motor axle on EVO? Can't say it's an issue. As you said, performance is not affected by this. At least I think so, because every time I listen, the tempo and timing of the percussions, beats...it is somehow more engaging then from WiFi streaming. And I have FLAC quality Deezer. Still the turntable sounds better. Anyway, thank you for an answer. When it's not broken, don't fix it they say🙂 Have a nice day.
Hi Paul so the morel of this story is , don’t heave ho your EVO . Sorry couldn’t resist it , but it does seem your assessment is more than valid . I have the p3 and found the use of a PSU plus rega mm stage made a profound difference . One thing I have considered is a plater clamp, but for some reason rega say not to have one , your highly regarded word’s of wisdom would be most appreciated . Best wishes and kind regards to your good self . As good old Brucey would say your definitely my favourite 🤣🤣👍👍👍
Hehe. I would stick with Rega's advice re. clamps/stabilisers although something like an Origin Live Gravity would work well because it's so light. It's relatively expensive, however.
Michell makes a record clamp specifically for Rega tables. Why not give it a try? Most record clamps don’t work well on Rega tables because of the very short spindle height.
The question is, if I spend say £500 upgrading the platter, subplatter and stylus, which brings the total spend to about £1000, would this money not be better spent on a £1000 turntable? Never mind, I watched to the end of the video and you answered my question 😂
Great video. I love modding myself. I enjoy the little steps up in sound quality that you can treat yourself to every now and again. Plus the second hand market is usually pretty good for these things, so once you've fully modded something and are ready to move to the next turntable, you can get most of your money back selling them all on. In fact if you buy second hand and buy well, you usually break even or even make a little.
Excellent video Paul. I have upgraded my Project Debut Carbon with aluminium sub platter, acrylic platter and Goldring G1045 cartridge. I believe you mentioned quite rightly that the acrylic platter does not need the felt mat. I feel however i feel that the vinyl does not sit solidly on the acrylic surface therefore i will be buying a record clamp or, if using a felt mat on the acrylic platter, do you think that impairs the sound quality or makes no difference? I will get round to testing myself but still in the process of upgrading the rest of my system.
Hi, I really enjoyed the video and I've bought a few of the upgrades. I have a Debut Carbon and it unfortunately seems to be the AC rather than DC version. I only figured this out when I bought the High Power It and it was incompatible with the Speedbox S I've been using and when I connected it directly to my turntable it didn't spin at all. Do I have any options for an equivalent to the High Power It that's compatible with my turntable?
Here's Pro-Ject's reply: "If it’s the Debut Carbon DC with 15V DC power supply, then they can switch to the High Power-IT. If it’s the Debut Carbon AC with captive 230V mains lead, then there’s no other power supply available."
@@TheAudiophileMan Thanks for this info. I may get an Evo since I could transfer most of my upgrades to it. I keep hearing that the Sumiko cartridge (included with the Evo in the US) has a warmer sound than the Ortofon. Do you have an opinion on this?
Hi Paul, sorry to bother, I wanted your opinion. I’ve got the project debut carbon evo for about a year and looking to upgrade parts. I’ve watched your you tube vid and I’m looking at two upgrades. I’m thinking the alu sub platter and torn between the acrylic platter or ortofon blue. I’ve had it a year wondered what you think would be the best combo for overall improved sound? I’m buying more first presses lately. Thanks for your feedback, great videos and from one scouser to another, keep up the good work 👍
I was wondering if upgrading the Ortofon M2 red to the Ortofon Bronze cartridge/stylus combo be even a greater jump in audio performance instead of the M2 blue stylus upgrade ? Or do you think it wouldn't make much difference compared to the M2 blue on this turntable ?
Curious to see if anybody knows if the debut aluminum sub-platter will also work with my NAD c558 turntable. I already have the acrylic platter. I was wondering if the aluminum sub-splatter is compatible since the NAD borrows parts from Pro-Ject.
@@jddewitt1981 I love the minimal and sleek look of my NAD turntable. It also sounds/performs wonderfully! an acrylic platter adds more mass/weigh. Due to the density and greater mass of the platter, the increased inertia allows the platter to spin at a more consistent speed. This results in a better wow and flutter measurement. The high-density material also aids in damping unwanted microvibrations, moreso than traditional platter materials. The acrylic material is able to trap and dissipate the energy that is transferred to the platter. Because acrylic has an analogous resonant frequency to the PVC material in vinyl records, it aids in the cancellation of reverberations resulting in a more 3-dimensional soundstage with improved bass definition, a richer mid range and greater overall signal clarity.
@@djsoulfilter Thank you for the reply. I was just wondering because to my ears acrylic seems to sound a bit flat / dead sounding. I’ve been going back and forth on new tables. I have a few nice vintage tables but they are starting to have issues. I run a NAD amp and the NAD table would sure look slick with it! Do you know if you can get belts reasonably easy?
I would take this parts list to NAD itself or one of its dealers and check. I would cautiously say yes to just about all of them but check before you buy on things like the power supply, platter, (the sub platter might be sorted actually), core stuff like that. I don't have a sample here so can't check.
Given the choice, Cary, I would always go for Acrylic over Glass. The former is sonically superior, you have to spend time damping Glass so you have to factor in extra costs for a quality mat, etc.
@@TheAudiophileMan I just picked up a Music Hall MMF-5. With glass, and felt mat. What is the preferred material in a mat. I am going to buy a Pro-ject carbon eco for my son.
To paraphrase Star Trek's Dr McCoy, "Dammit Jim, I'm a hifi reviewer, not a scientist!" So I'd advise you to talk to one of those rarified people if you're after equations and the like, instead of the guy who wears sweaters full of holes and has a penchant for prog. What I can offer is the evidence of my own ears - and that's all I ever offer on this channel, my ears and my experience, nothing more than that. I know, having tested and run dozens of the things, that a quality power supply adds confidence and a sense of security to the sound. Especially the bass regions. Bass can sound wheezy with a poor power supply. Doesn't matter if it's connected to a turntable or an amp or a DAC. The mids can also sound stressed. I can also hear more high-frequency noise from poor power supplies. Mains noise is parasitic and more easily occupies a low-cost power supply (such as a phone's switch mode power supply to provide one notorious example). The latter masks subtle sonic detail. It also contributes to the mids sending edgy and 'bright'. Hope that helps a bit.
Thanks Paul did most of these upgrades to my Evo it sounds phenomenal thanks to your good self very pleased with it
All the best.
A terrific vid. Your manner of presentation is at once lighthearted and also full of great information. Top job
Not at all - I'm cheering you on from this bench. Go Marc!
Nice. How is it ?
Yeah. I did pretty much the same. Didn’t do the tone arm dampers and I went with a sumiko blue point special evo III.
@@bravedwarf I’m sure there was. Hard to compare though. So it wasn’t spectacularly different.
Superb. agree with one of your final points about the arm.
I own an EVO since a week or so. I love it, and I thank you for this video. I have some things on my audio bucket list now :)
I bought the Evo a few days ago and came across this wonderful video. I've taken notes!
I'm so impressed with the depth of this video.
Thank you for a great video and covering so many options. A friend gave me the Acrylic platter and it was such a huge change I have been wondering about other things especially the sub platter. I did upgrade the stylus and got a Ground-it E. So nice to get things that you can actually hear a difference.
Great video. I enjoyed how you broke down each component and assessed them individually with an honest lens - at each price point.
Excellent review. Another advantage of the acrylic platter is the possibility to upgrade to a mc cartridge.
And after all the upgrades it becomes a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon EVO EVO.
Hey Max,
Did you replaced the cartridge also when putting on the Bronze or did you use the catridge from the red ?
I will answer this one in Friday's video - watch the skies.
Thanks!
Very interesting - thanks for this Paul.
This video, like the other ones, was very interesting ! Great job thank you! 👍🏻
You did a fantastic job. Thx for Your effort and showing me the path of upgrades. Highly appreciated!
Thanks.
Brilliant video! Think your for selecting and evaluating those options. What would be the Pro-ject equivalent of Rega RP6?
Did all exept the acrylic platter. i want to keep the original platter because of its weight. together with the alu sub platter i thought it will do a better job in reducing the wow flutter. instead, i apply the Acrylic Mat. im very happy with the result...
What acrylic mat did you buy. I am thinking of getting one
cheers for making these, essential to someone like me, i'm getting a kick pretending you're techmoan's estranged brother! you have a simmilar manner lol
Cheers,
Greg
very helpful video. thank you !!
I've been looking at different upgrades and was unsure which were worth it
what do you think about the alu sub-platter and the acrylic-it in combination ? is it worth doing both ?
Brilliant and enjoyable review. The Ground it I suspect would be ideal for my Linn Basik.
I'll be doing most of these to my Expression II - thanks!
How did you rewire and what was the differing sound?! Thanks.
Great video, thanks! Will you be doing similar with the Debut PRO?
I wonder how does it compare to project debut pro ? After most of the updates evo will be more than a pro.
I’m hoping to get one in…so we’ll see.
Only just seen this! Great video. I have a debut carbon and already have the acrylic platter. However, what would be the order you would recommend in modifying? What would be first and the order? That would help a lot. Many thanks and keep up the good work!!
I'll feature your question in Friday's video, Mick. Watch the skies.
Yes you are right, Sumiko is much better than ortofon
@@TheAudiophileMan yeah, my room accoustics are not great. As far as the 2M Blue being a little bright, it is something I have read about in more than one review. Still, it's probably a good improvement over the stock 2M Red.
I fancied something different so in November I changed my 2M blue for a Sumiko Olympia cartridge. At first I thought I had made a terrible, expensive, mistake but over time it has become absolutely fantastic and I doubt if I’ve reached the 30 hour run in period mentioned in reviews. Highly recommended!
Hi, thanks for this great video. I have a question though. Does the extra thickness of the acrylic platter impact the angle of the tonearm?
Generally speaking, there's no difference because the platters are the same thickness. In terms of fractions, there is :)
Replacing the default platter with the acrylic and then removing the felt mat actually improves the levelling a tad. I emphasise, I'm talking fractions here. So yea. Basically, don't worry about it. If anything though, the acrylic platter might actually help.
The acrylic platter is slighty higher to compensate not using the felt mat !
As new EVO owners, my question would be. What would be your preferred order of implementation?
For mods? Check out my new HiFi News, Etc video for more on that.
Bought the new Debut Pro... wanted the better arm. Already got an Orto 2M LVB 250 to go on. Next will be the alu subplatter and acrylic main platter. Then the power supply and the iso deck. Should be fun! Why wait to upg if you can afford to?
Just get X2
@@blejzerosamigos6115 The X2 has opposition thats better for the price, Rega P6 for one. There is nowhere near enough difference from the Pro to the X2 for it to be worthwhile... the cheaper deck allows for bigger cart budget which matters more to me
Great review....seriously thinking about purchasing now 🤔🤔🤔
This sounds like it ends up nearby to the Fluance RT85 out of the box.
@@TheAudiophileMan Great stuff thank you so much for the link
Another question 😊
Having watched a few of your videos, if I were to follow all of your upgrade recommendations, am I better off sourcing the Evo or a RPM1 ?
Whilst the EVO offers switched speed, I suspect I will only be playing 33’s for the most part so am thinking it’s down to sound quality once upgrades are in place.
Thanks in advance
Hmmmm. I’d go for the modded EVO.
Thankyou. Crazy quick response, really appreciated.
Hi, great video, really informative - thanks.
I have a Pro-Ject Evo with Sony STR-DH190 & Q3010i speakers (currently using the in built pre amp/Phono input on the Sony)
My question is, would I be better upgrading the turntable (thinking particularly of the aluminium sub platter, power & stylus) - or - putting that money to a different use by either purchasing a separate phono amp and/or upgrade to my amplifier first? I think my amp was around £200 so would look to sell it on & spend maybe around £400-500 mark.
Any recommendations welcome, be it for phono amp / main amp or upgrades mentioned.
Cheers!
Sub platter looks sexy though. But you’d only see that sexiness if you bought the acrylic platter!
Thankyou
What caliber of turntable is it comparable to with the best of the aforementioned upgrades?
Great video. Really helpful. Thank you.
It is all very, very valuable. Great thanks, sincerely. But very kindly advice, this could have been done in 15 minutes. I have to go to sleep at some stage
There’s chapter headings in the Description if you need to bounce around the video.
Nice vid!
Can someone tell me what’s that song in the Pro-Ject commercial at the very beginning?
@@TheAudiophileMan Thank you.
I’ll make a note, sure. Check out my site if you need any editorial on mono.
I’d be curious to know how the upgraded Project table compares to the Technics 1500. How close would it get with the same cartridge?
I wouldn't compare them at all because that wouldn't be the point of upgrading the EVO in the first place. You upgrade the EVO because you have very little cash and certainly not enough to buy a new, more expensive turntable...like the 1500. If you're considering buying a 1500 then you have that money. So the EVO is not the mode to be comparing the 1500 to - it's a whole different level of turntable.
Hello , i have a Evo , but when i upgrade to a Acryl-it do i need to adjust the VTA . is the height oke then ?
Thanks for the review. After watching I decided to buy the cork it mat. Sound was improved my only issue is when I remove a record the cork mat sometimes sticks to the record. Any idea how I can stop this.
Is this a static thing?
Will the platter upgrades be applicable to the new debut Pro? I don't know if it's out in the UK already as it isn't here in Canada yet.
I hope to look at that deck in the future.
Thank you.
I didn't find any issues with the EVO in terms of performance to be honest.
Great video.
Can you do these upgrades on the project debut pro?
awesome review!
Hi, If you upgrade to the acryllic plate, do you have to raise the tonearm? And if so, how?
No, you're fine.
what a pleasure is to listen to your videos. Very informative, and straight to the point. Thank you, sir.
Did it change the vta when you changed the sub-platter? I don't think that can be adjusted on EVOs.
The old and new sub platters are the same depth in measurement terms so no, you're fine.
@@TheAudiophileMan thank you thank you. I've been wanting to pull the trigger on this sub-platter upgrade but concerned about the height.
I use a really thin felt mat with a record clamp on my acrylic platter and it doesn't impair the sound quality on my NAD c558 turntable.
I'll ask - be back ASAP.
Thanks for your feedback, great videos and from one scouser to another, keep up the good work 👍
Did I reply to this one elsewhere?
@@TheAudiophileMan you did mate thanks, and made the relevant purchases, thanks again 👍
Great review
I was wondering if upgrading the Ortofon M2 red to the Ortofon Bronze cartridge/stylus combo be even a greater jump in audio performance instead of the M2 blue stylus upgrade ?
Or do you think it wouldn't make much difference compared to the M2 blue on this turntable ?
Yes, definitely worth a try.
Curious to see if anybody knows if the debut aluminum sub-platter will also work with my NAD c558 turntable. I already have the acrylic platter. I was wondering if the aluminum sub-splatter is compatible since the NAD borrows parts from Pro-Ject.
Is there a reason for wanting to change platters? I have been thinking about buying the NAD

I love the minimal and sleek look of my NAD turntable.
Could you apply this upgrade to the NAD - C 588? Would that even be appropriate?
I would take this parts list to NAD itself or one of its dealers and check. I would cautiously say yes to just about all of them but check before you buy on things like the power supply, platter, (the sub platter might be sorted actually), core stuff like that. I don't have a sample here so can't check.
@@TheAudiophileMan Thank you for your reply. Also, between the NAD and the Technics 1500 C which would you choose?
Please review a Pioneer plx1000.
How does acrylic plater compare with a glass plater?
Given the choice, Cary, I would always go for Acrylic over Glass. The former is sonically superior, you have to spend time damping Glass so you have to factor in extra costs for a quality mat, etc.
@@TheAudiophileMan I just picked up a Music Hall MMF-5.
With glass, and felt mat. What is the preferred material in a mat.
I am going to buy a Pro-ject carbon eco for my son.
How does power supply affect the sound. What is the scientific reason. And it's belt drive 🙄
