Eric Serra uses this loads in other music, including the movie Leon and Fifth element. It was such an awesome sound, i haven't even finished the video yet but i already know the origins of this as i scoured the internet trying to find exactly what this sound was some time ago, which led me to absolutley critically listen to all of Serra's work. he's an awesome composer, honestly i loved fifth element when i was a kid and leon and now even more. Not to mention goldeneye.
Agreed! Definitely had a signature sound. For bond I much prefer David Arnold’s work from this Brosnan/Craig era, but this sample and some of the production sounds/elements are so iconic.
The version used on the game indeed comes from the E-mu Proteus FX, the specific patch called "Infinite One". The version used by Serra on the film score comes from the E-mu PROcussion and is different from the Proteus FX version. The specific patch from the PROcussion is called "Ice Missile".
The Goldeneye sound was also featured in a fantastic Michael Jackson song from the Dangerous album called Give In To Me so me being a diehard fan of both Bond & MJ had me vibing tremendously
You could make an entire genre of music called GoldenEyecore incorporating that sound. Everybody seems to have known exactly which sound this video is going to be about. Every now and then you hear it in other movies and music but I couldn't give any examples although each time I have heard it I immediately think of GoldenEye
I appreciate it. Honestly - comments like these go further than you know! I’m happy that at least one other person could nerd out about this like I did haha
This sound HAS to be made to sound like very old Sonar from some type of old submarine. I was told it was a submarine sonar ping from my fathers friend when I was growing up, and I never ever got it out of my head. Such a creepy but amazing sound to be placed in such a perfect soundtrack, it adds SO much to it. Additionally, I can listen to you experiment and talk about this soundtrack all day.. LOL I love finding people who are passionate about this soundtrack like I am.. it's unbelievably amazing.
@xGoodOldSmurfehx it came from the proteus emu 2 synthesizer. Setting is called "infinite one" and is under the percussion category. Hope this helps! 😊
There's only one person whose name comes to mind if someone said "Drums + N64 + James Bond"... that's authenticity right there. Takes me back to when you crushed me in 007 & Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey. Love seeing all the work you've put into your craft over the years. Cheers
Justin!!! Man. So good to hear from you. Yeah - drums, N64, and James Bond def have been with me since we were walking the halls of Western Branch. Haha
The original sound is actually "Ice Missile", patch #493 on the E-MU Procussion (yes, it's not a typo, it's PROcussion) unit. Eric also used a bunch more samples off there. There's a very similar preset on the Proteus FX module called "Infinite" that is very similar and may actually have originated as Ice Missile.
I feel like this could have been improved further by matching the spectral shape by going hog wild on the EQ, and perhaps using a different (less stryating) timestretch algorithm. ;)
Use ur sample or sample 6 and snip off a tiny bit of 'sample start time', then mess with ampEnvelope to get that snappier transient with like -10dB sustain and very short decay and close to zero attack.
I second this opinion. No other bond even compares. Even if one or more of his bond films were kinda "meh" Brosnans performance always shines.. Gotta go boot up goldeneye64 now..
There’s a composer named Yannick Zenhäusern that did something similar to this. In fact, he has an album called “The Janus Files,” that follows closely to Éric Serra’s original work but mixes it well with the video game version. Check it out if you haven’t. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I love the quest people had over this very sound. It reminds me when I used a couple hours of lonely night remembering the "Space Ghost: Coast to Coast" series had one of its outro indents who mystified me: The Williams Street logo. It sounded like something industrial with an ominous humming. Seeing this indent as a child, late at night, lights off and alone was unnerving to me. I had to dig deeper. I did eventually find the Jack Webb's "Mark VII Limited" indent with the hand hammering the logo away (the real source of the sound). Sometimes, some strange things like these sounds: they mark us in a way not many things could.
None of the comments got right! That sound is a "cowbell" from an 80s synth. *There is an official website with all 80s synths with famous songs tagged to it.
I have been searching for this, asking around on reddit. Thank you! I know it mostly from Planescape Torment, an old D&D PC game. It is literally the first sound in the soundtrack
Glad to have given you some answers after some searching! It's a really deep world people get into over vintage synths/drum machines that all this stuff came from.
Pretty sure this sound also showed up in Leon: The Professional. I called it "toilet bowl sound" because it reminded me of looking down at a toilet bowl. A metal one. With a ball in it.
Needs eq n reverb for sure also sounds like it’s stretched little bit.. almost to make it sound underwater like sonar sound or something but this is still definitely the closest.
Not much of a mystery if you have ears! It's clearly a pitched down tambourine sound, very common in EMU modules, also used in the MYST soundtrack. The sound is called "Magic Bells"
I would agree it wasn't the exact same sample. Part of the beauty of music and recording/production is trying experiments and seeing what happens. That exactly what this was for me - hopefully you learned something! I certainly did.
Try pitch shifting the Goldeneye sound up, and see what tambourine it sounds like!
Why are you so brilliant!!!!
Also - why didn’t I think of that?!?! Haha
was waiting for this
Thats the first thing that I thought lol
Came here to say this
2:03 small correction, Grant Kirkhope, the video game composer, is the one who responded via tweet
Nobody ever mentions that this sound is also all through the soundtrack for "Leon the Professional"
Same guy from goldeneye
Same soundtrack composer.
Both soundtracks by Eric Serra
Plenty of people do, I've seen it mentioned on multiple vids
He also did 5th Element
Yes, that's a typical sound from the synth/sampler banks of Eric Serra; if I recall he used it in "Nikita", "Leon" and "Goldeneye"
The sound is interesting, to me it sounds like listening sonar from the outside of a submarine.
That’s a great comparison.
Mark Snow (composer for the acclaimed "X-Files" TV series and movies/games) also used this sample often!
I always called it the "Russian Sound."
It sounds like a manhole cover being removed or replaced back on to the manhole.
Eric Serra uses this loads in other music, including the movie Leon and Fifth element.

I was about to say the same thing. Serra definitely reused this sound a lot in his minimalist scores he made for the Luc Besson films of the 90s.
It’s from the E-MU Proteus FX ✌🏻
This was the perfect “deep in the back of your memory”
Video I’ve ever seen😂
Ha! Thank you. This one sound was foundational for an entire generation haha

“Goldeneyecore” ☠️☠️☠️ hahaha
Thanks for this. Low views but definitely very high quality content.

So glad this video hit for you! I knew there had to be more people out there that loved this soundtrack like I did haha.
The creator of the soundtrack has confirmed its a down-pitched tambourine lol.
@@dreamplace7469 Yes it is
No, it was made to sound like pipes because of the Chemical factory in GoldenEye
Simple as that
@xGoodOldSmurfehx it came from the proteus emu 2 synthesizer. Setting is called "infinite one" and is under the percussion category. Hope this helps! 😊
It's the perfect sound effect for a spy sneaking into somewhere through the ventilation system.
Hahaha. You aren’t wrong.
Half life vibes

My childhood version of this sound is from the Zanakard Ruins theme from FFX

Totally, I also think the people suggesting taking the original sample from the soundtrack and pitching it up would be fun.
Use ur sample or sample 6 and snip off a tiny bit of 'sample start time', then mess with ampEnvelope to get that snappier transient with like -10dB sustain and very short decay and close to zero attack.
I'll have to try it. Or you can and share the results!
The Golden Eye game got me into the James Bond movies. Pierce Bronson, in my opinion, is the best Bond.
By far. Only true one. Sucks that he only did 4 movies :/
@@Serjo777
4 is good enough
I second this opinion. No other bond even compares. Even if one or more of his bond films were kinda "meh" Brosnans performance always shines..

This was awesome! I love those deep dives
Glad you enjoyed it!
Would you be able to grab a sample of the sound and pitch it up, then compare it to a bunch of other tambourines without the extra work?
Someone else had the same idea a while back. Very smart. Should’ve done that hahah. But wouldn’t have been as fun
Is it weird that when I hear this sound, I instantly associate it with secret agents and cold war Russia lol?
No. Quite the opposite. That should be the #1 association with it. Any other reaction is a red flag.
Tim? Turn off your camera autofocus
Listen. I’m not a camera operator. I’m a drummer…I get it right…like…most of the time…
Virgins: hits blunt
Bond Chad's: hits metal pipe
lol. You get it.
It was also used in one episode of the X-Files, where both were stranded on a ship and grew old rapidly by something in the water
That episode is 'Død Kalm' from season 2.
loads of other episodes too
It’s from a Roland percussion sound. Standard on the Roland MC-808.
It even shortly appeared on the soundtrack from 'The 5th element' in the scene were they send Korben Dallas to negotiate with the mangalores
It really does sound the same. I would confuse them both. Good job! 👍
After learning about the tambo trick, I actually did something very similar and ended up remaking the pause music in ableton, love this sound to bits!
When I saw this video, I knew exactly which sound it was lol. It's ironically GoldenEye.
"Iconically" maybe lol. Nothing ironic about this
@@legitbeans9078 sooo no one is going to make the "Eyeronic" pun? Just me?
*ok*
Genius! I like your video so much more than that other dude's. You actually find the source :)
The sound is also there in the IGI game soundtrack.
Maybe im wrong but i think this sound is also present in Misty Menace from Donkey Kong Country
Sounds Soviet.

2:05 in the video - I show a clip of someone who found a tweet from the person that did the soundtrack and he says it was a tambo sample.
EMU proteus 2000 yessir!
I guess this is what they used for the Resident Evil soundtack too
I have been searching for this, asking around on reddit. Thank you!

“Ice Missile” from the EMU Pro/Cussion module.
Infinite.
What about recreating other sounds from GoldenEye...?
There is so much good stuff in this score.
Yesssssssss! Also, nice Orient! I've got mine on today!
Good eye! It’s the greatest deal in watches I think.
Ce son est tres populaire dans le millieu des années 90 il est présent dans la bo du film Ronin
Jackson Parodi did this on his RUclips channel about 7 years ago. He did so much digging to find it, until He found it was from a Proteus FX.
He was who I referenced in the video. REALLY awesome deep dive and helped me a ton with figuring out it was a tambo pitched down haha.
while I do recall the Proteus, I also remember something similar in the Triton Le
Very cool. Love this. Great game & tones too
Always sounded like someone breathing to me.
holy shit i didnt know the sound was real
Very real.
great !
Pretty sure this sound also showed up in Leon: The Professional. I called it "toilet bowl sound" because it reminded me of looking down at a toilet bowl. A metal one. With a ball in it.
It's like some kind of chain link fence pitched down low. The sample is called Infinity One
You're doing the Lord's work, Tim.
Hahaha. Glad to be a vessel
check the peak pitch of the sample using spectrum, then you know the note. that'd make this exercise easier.
And then we were all not surprised to learn that it was actually Ben Bert’s voice that made it.
Needs eq n reverb for sure also sounds like it’s stretched little bit.. almost to make it sound underwater like sonar sound or something but this is still definitely the closest.
If I remember correctly, I also heard this sample in one of the Sailor Moon anime soundtracks
Awesome cover of the song..is this available online?
Nice speed master
Love it!
I'm glad you made this video.
Awesome video. Been wondering what this sound was for years now.
Pretty sure the same sound is used on The Leon: The Professional ost too
Also by Eric Serra
Infinite One preset on a Proteus FX
subscribed, great work
Awesome, thank you!
Trvelein is bett
I made that little riff into a beat
"this like, uh, rack mount vintage drum machine, uh, rackmount unit thing"
Amazing research, il have to get one of those
2:05 in the video - I show a clip of the exact model. Hope that helps!
Not much of a mystery if you have ears! It's clearly a pitched down tambourine sound, very common in EMU modules, also used in the MYST soundtrack. The sound is called "Magic Bells"

You mixed your own voice way too loud.
