The long awaited return of Goldeneye 007 is here on both the Xbox and Nintendo Switch. For the first time since 1997 gamers are able to enjoy this classic game for modern consoles ever since its original release on the Nintendo 64. While what is here is faithful to the original, it could have been so much better. In this episode we take a closer look at the good, the bad...and the confusing.

@@Ray__E - It's not so much about that, it's more about that they're simply running a subscription-service that needs to be attractive from month to month or year to year. - There's nothing wrong with that, because the majority (which is the general mainstream public that doesn't nerd around on these videos) definitely doesn't need to "own" anything (not like, even if you'd have a disc or anything, you "own" it anyway, that's a fabricated argument "gamers" like to throw around), because they just live their lives, go to work, occasionally and casually play some games that are available on whatever service they use, and move the frick on. - There's no real loss to them, because they just consume and move on, which is very normal non-obsessive behavior.
But even when you're more obsessive "gamers" like us geeks here, are you really going to play most of these games forever and ever?... There's always this talk of "I want to be able to play muh gaemz years down the line!"... Will you, really?... It's unlikely and more of a stance of "principle" (which I get, but isn't realistic). And if you're one of the few who happens to run into a game they can't play, either just choose something else or emulate. - Look, I'm from the old DOS and NES generation, I "get" it, but it's just not that much about ownership, which is a lie for software-based products anyway, and more about support for accessibility.
And in the end, you should just know what you pay for and consider if it's worth it or even all that important. An "all you can play buffet" type subscription, even if games come and go, is just one option. - The sad part for this game is that it's the only way available and not also on platforms like Steam or whatever, it's MORE limited than even a digital license. Options are what we need.

(Having said that, throwing a way to get over there into a remake as a secret easter egg for the hardcore fans would be pretty cool).
And yeah All Bonds was a licensing matter - in fact I've read the one change to the game's rom on NSO+ that has been found is that ALL traces of All Bonds has been removed from the game's code - those portraits that were left behind in the original game to be found by modders are gone.

Looking at that unreleased rare version, it's mind-boggling that they didn't make something close to that(for crying out they did that in 2007!). They could have had options in the game to run the old school graphics or the newer enhanced ones. I tend to agree that the only way all the parties involved would allow this thing to live again on modern hardware is for it to be as close to a 1:1 with the original as possible.
Its sad that we have sit here having to be thankful that Goldeneye is available at all, but given the number of cookie jars that had to be simultaneously pilfered to make this happen...it really is kind of a small miracle.

My best guess as a bystander with no actual knowledge of the circumstances is honestly that, considering how difficult securing the rights has always been, the XBLA version was fully scrapped in favor of emulation as part of stipulations both with MGM (possibly a "you cannot release a changed version, you can only release the nintendo 64 game as we already approved it) or concerns with Rare, considering how long ago that old port was made. It's possible that code loss might've occurred, or people who would need to be credited or paid for it no longer work with the company, so in the face of dealing with that, they decided to just opt for emulation instead, on account of the fact that they likely wouldn't make any additional money off of it anyway, being unable to sell it standalone.

I definitely understand locking to 30, I’ve used 1964 at 60fps and both games definitely had trouble, they were mostly fine but then you’d find weird issues in places, most notably any crouching guard would skip the reloading action block, this seems to be fixed in more recent versions of 1964 but I remember back in the day it made Perfect Dark’s Air Force One almost unbeatable since the crouching Mr. Blonde’s would just shoot an endless stream of bullets without reloading or standing up.
It’s a real shame none of these are perfect, I really wish they’d finish up the XBLA version, I still think I prefer the look of the original graphics but a remaster like that would be amazing to see, if Perfect Dark could get such a good one so should Goldeneye. I think they could still make these versions work, if they gave both of them a locked 30fps, improved controls, and online multiplayer, but like this they’re so disappointing. But at least thanks to the switch version we do have a way to finally play the game online. I just hope some fans can finish up the 360 version, I think with enough effort that could be ported to run natively on PC and have any unfinished features finished.

Only two OG people at Rare today are from the old days and they are two people who were just ordinary devs when Microsoft bought out Rare 20 years ago, one of them is now in charge of the company and the other is a lead designer on their current Pirates game.
There were *some* OG guys still there during the source port of GoldenEye which never released because Nintendo renewed the licence, but most were gone even by then, all of whom had little to do with the shooter games, all of them having worked on the platformers, they left after Nuts and Bolts. The OG devs of GoldenEye left Rare before Microsoft bought them out, the producer stayed on but left when Microsoft bought the company, went to make mobile games and retired from the industry at the end of the 00s. While the rest went to make Free Radical Design after they made Perfect Dark and took the original game engine with them which was used for the Timesplitters games and they also left Free Radical when Crytek bought them out in 2009. But in better news Deep Silver purchased Free Radical and brought back as many of the people they could from the original devs to head up a new Timesplitters game, which should be well into development right now.

I've been seeing people say "Just be happy we got this at all"
Can't believe standards have been lowered so much that we got people defending a game that was already completed and has legendary status with nostalgia, but sure let's settle for jank instead of giving MGM & the other publishers feedback given how borked it is.
It's pretty funny that the XB version of all versions has compressed audio given you'd think that'd be more of a 64 issue given the hardware limitations. But no, somehow the cart is doing better than the digital version of a game from the 90s.
They're likely banking on this kinda attitude, that "Why bother? Just kick it out and it's good enough".
It's truly shameful, I can't imagine what hell the devs went through dealing with all the legal tape the publishers & Rights holders had put up with.
Hopefully the true hero, Timesplitters 2 & Future Perfect get good remaster/ports/whatever so this way we get the GoldenEye sequels, remastered, that we deserve.

The two things that have always bugged me the most about NSO's N64 are the visuals and the controls. I think a lot of elements get this weird rounded texture that just looks ugly but I could probably get by if it had some sort of filter like their NES and SNES offerings. Am I to believe that the Switch can't handle that? The second is the N64 was a freak of a controller so most games on the service feel weird until you rebind the control scheme in the Switch settings. Which I'm glad that it's there to begin with but I wish that each game in the NSO N64 service had it's own unique control scheme. Better yet let the player manually input their preferred control scheme and save it to that individual game. I know that this is sorta-technically-possible but I'd rather it be doable within the service rather than me having to leave the game, go to a menu, head to another menu, to reach another menu, and than return to the game.

Nintendo's consent was a big factor in the game being re-released at all. There's no way that they'd have accepted the Xbox version looking so much better. Yes, the XBLA code could have been ported to Switch, but that would have been a much bigger time and money investment than just using their existing emulation framework. They'd have had to hire Code Mystics (or another studio) to do the work, rather than being able to simply do it in-house. Microsoft would also have to be willing to hand over the source code for the code for the XBLA port in such a scenario, and they may not have wanted to do that for free. Or the source code may even have been lost, given it's an unreleased game from 15+ years ago. Who's to say Rare even have it any more?
Overall, I'm not surprised that this is all we get. As with everything related to GoldenEye, there are just too many complications for the XBLA version to ever resurface officially.

@@CaptainKenway I have also heard (and this may be bullshit since it's all just twitter / forum talk) that one complication for the XBLA versions release is that the Rare devs working on it didn't actually have MGM:s permission to to do so. They were working on it as a pitch more or less, but never actually had permissions to do so- which means that if that version were to become playable everything in it would have to be scrutinized and investigated- but Goldeneye N64 is already vetted, and it is probably WAY quicker for them, and less legal bullshit to cut through, to go with the N64 version.

this probably isnt the version my cousins and I played local MP on when we were kids, but this is the first time I've gotten hardcore nostalgia for a game

Might be good to make it clear we're talking about the Xbox/Switch versions in the title/thumbnail. I knew it was about those but a lot of people might think you're talking about the original and get mad lol

I stayed up very late yesterday to play this and man was it a lot of fun. I agree with MVG that the XBLA version should have been the base, that was what I was looking for, but this isn't bad either, its a modern tech friendly version of an old classic and I love that this has found it's way back in my life so many years after I played it continuously for several years after release.
Thanks for covering this... It was a true pleasure :)

Small comments based on my playthrough of the Xbox port.
-Knockback is insane. I don't remember this being a huge issue back on N64, but it's worse bad by...
-...The fact that spawns are handled weirdly. Back then it wasn't noticeable given how unique it was and how 'narrow' our thought process was at the time, or maybe it wasn't an issue then at all, and only was made one via the port, but turning away for a second and getting shot by someone who wasn't there a second ago is harsh, especially since the only way to maintain HP in the game is through Body Armor. THIS is a problem because...
-...You *cannot* 100% the game without a degree of luck now. I started off on Secret Agent for the nostalgia factor and only got as far as Bunker A before I had to tone it down; I was finishing every mission with the tiniest sliver of HP left. Agent, however, made things so impossibly easy, that the only thing that killed me was the long text at the end of the game. (The infinitely-spawning guards managed to come down there mid-monologue when I went for a slapper finish and the knockback couldn't be stopped. Still got the achievement for beating the game, though, so funny alternate ending?) This is problematic because 00 Agent is more than just a difficulty scale deal; It unlocks the two final missions featuring a 'secret' villain. (Not risking a spoiler in case someone new is somehow present; Something to work towards if the game gets patched.)
Honestly, I was never 'good' at the game. Younger me tried tirelessly to 00 Agent the whole thing many sleepless nights but never got past the defense portion for Natalia (Back then there was no way to know you could just sit in one spot and shoot them all.) but even today I gave it my best, and that's the result. It's a poorly dusted off relic from a golden age, no pun intended, but it still beats being a badly remade cashgrab any day.

That’s unfortunate that they already had a full source code rebuild for XBLA that got pulled. Full original assets and everything. This could have been outstanding for both consoles. Instead it seems the licensing corporation went for a quick buck and didn’t care.

I was hoping you would do a video on this new release. So many good memories of GoldenEye 007!
