Your Sheepshead hook is called a sweeper jig. They work ok but even better would be a dropper rig and sliding cork or a split-shot and #1 hook. I fished along there 15 years ago and caught so many I ate and gave fish to friends every trip. Anywhere on the gulf side with depth seems best. They are bigger in Feb, Mar and April.
That hook is produced by a guy local to the Tampa area. He only sells them locally. You can find them at Gator Jim's and Clearwater Bait and Tackle for sure.
Those were some nice fish. Thinking of going to the skyway fishing maybe the end of the week. Never been before. Any suggestions for the first time going there? Tight lines.
If you’re fishing from the piers look at satellite views of them on google earth to find the rocks piles. If you cast to them they’re good for flounder, grouper, grunts, & snapper. Also fish beneath close to the pilings for the same type of fish. Take some gotcha plugs & silver spoons for bluefish, jacks, & Mack’s. If you’re fishing from shore avoid the open sand areas, not much in quality fish in those area except the occasional flounder. Fish close to the rocks, the passes under the bridges, or the jetties. Shrimp works great for bait, but if you have a net take it b/c there’s plenty of bait out there right now. If you’re wading/yaking hit the grass flats for the fish mention above plus reds, snook, & trout. Good luck & tight lines!
I have never fished the ocean . a friend of mine went and brought me some Sheepshead .. OMG it was so good .. i can't find anywhere I can order any .. can you help ??
Not sure where you could order sheepshead from, but try your local seafood markets to see if they have. If they don’t then ask if they could some in for you. Hopefully that helps, thanks for the vid support 👍🏽
Not sure man, all I know it was specific jighead meant for sheepshead. My friend @toneeeltigre gave it to me, hit him up on IG/Twitter for info on them.
Yeah they’ll stick around into February, sometimes into early spring. Right now there’s small schools around there if you can find them, but they’re mostly shorts with a few keepers mixed in.
damn i was at the Skyway pier yesterday and i couldn't get anything to hit and I saw some huge sheepshead and I put my live shrimp right in front of them but they just wouldn't hit. I only saw one guy catch something and it was a puffer fish
Yeah man that happens, especially with sheepshead. Sometimes they’re very picky on what they’ll eat. Next time pull over next to sandy/grassy area & look for little crabs. Switching it up sometimes gets them feeding, & then follow with the shrimp. Tight lines!! 🎣
Almost any spot along those rocks will hold them during the cooler months. Now that the water is warming up there’s less keepers, plenty of shorts stuck around though.
The hook was given to me, not sure where my friend got it. Hit him up on IG/Twitter @toneeeltigre. Those shrimp I used I got during low tide by the jetty. Regular shrimp should work though
New Subscriber, Great Content, Thanks For Sharing.
My man, love your spirit. You are a food provider, keep them 12 inches. My uncle use to say, fish for support, then sport. Lol cool

You ever catch any over there during the summer?

Does the sheephead stay on the rocks even in January?

@@jva87 i think part of the problem was the way i was presenting it. But ill try again later in the week and i will try to get some little crabs
Can anyone tell me where by the skyway is this spot?
South end of the Skyway before the south fishing pier
Your 1 of the few that share spots, for that, I'll subscribe, stay humble
What side of the pier did you catch them at North or south?
This was on the southend of the skyway bridge, before the fishing pier
Did you see them or is that a spot you know holds them?
Almost any spot along those rocks will hold them during the cooler months. Now that the water is warming up there’s less keepers, plenty of shorts stuck around though.
Yo where did you get the hooks and bait at slide the connect

South end of the skyway, before the pier
I go there too! Had some success on shrimp. Will have to try crawfish as well! Or whatever type of shrimp that is.
How often you go?
Life Of Fishing I went today and caught several big Sheepsheads and saw many more caught! Some really big ones too!!!
Howard Woodson i don’t usually go on weekends brother but I’m off from Sunday to Wednesday so anytime if you ever want to meet up let me know
