Painful to watch this scene. Hitting somebody with a car is traumatizing regardless of fault. Drive slow in parking lots because short people with dark cloths will almost deliberately jump in front of you.
That happened to me not too long ago. Theres a very popular pub/restaurant near me that ive never been in, but ive driven past countless times. At the front entrance to the pub is the crosswalk and a traffic light. In all the years, the hundreds of times Ive driven past that particular spot, ive NEVER seen the patrons of the pub use the crosswalk and traffic light when they were coming or going to the pub. Theyre always walking off the curb, jaywalking, to cross the street. Worse, when theyre coming from the pub, theyre walking out drunk. One time i had to drive past the pub yet again, about 2:30 in the morning. I have the green light, i go past the crosswalk when i spot a bunch of guys (in their 20s) in the middle of the street. They were coming from the pub down the street about 20-40 feet away from the crosswalk. A couple guys were holding up their drunken friend as they tried to cross the street. I slammed on my brakes. I come within inches of hitting them, but I'm not sure if i did or didnt hit anyone. So I roll down my window to ask them if i hit anyone. But before i can get a word out one of them yells at me: "Whats wrong with you? You almost hit my friend!" The word "almost" was music to my ears. I didnt hit anyone. I looked at the drunken guy being propped up by his buddies. Now he was trying to get at me in a fit of anger. His friends were holding him back and his face was contorted in rage, he resembled a chimp. Then one of them yelled at me to get the hell out of there and drive off, which i did. I wasnt worried about legal problems if i had hit any of them. I knew i wasnt in the wrong. They were walking from the curb, far away from the crosswalk. And even if they were walking in the crosswalk (which they werent), they were walking against the light too.
Those 60's Oldsmobiles were built like tanks and probably didn't have a scratch on it. Try this with a Toyota Prius or any modern car, and the car would be totaled.
