Why I Made the Perfect Choice with the Triumph Speed Twin

  • An alternate title for this video was going to be; "The All Year Motorcyclist and His Part In My Divorce!" as there was no way the wife was going to let me add another bike to the collection! :) If you're in the market for a new motorcycle, then you should definitely consider the Triumph Speed Twin. This is my first ride on the bike as I start the running in process and where better to visit on a first ride than Harvington Hall as the sun is setting.
    So why did I go for the Speed Twin? After our return from the Switzerland Tour, I cleaned and polished my Yamaha Tracer 9 GT put it the garage and proceeded to rotate my rides out on my other bikes. I really love the Tracer and touring on it was a joy but I've found myself only using it for the longer annual tours and between the end of last years Scotland Tour and Switzerland, I could count on one hand how many times I'd taken it out. With this in mind I decided I needed to replace it with a another bike that I would ride more often and be the bike I'd take on tours. I really loved my Triumph Thruxton R and Bobber Black, although my confidence in reliability of the brand did take a knock when the Bobber Black broke down! Although Triumph rectified the defective part free of charge, they did try to charge for labour this was the time when I reduced my collection from 3 to 1 bike, the Tracer 9. I included the Thruxton R in this downsizing exercise as the riding position was causing my wrists some gip.
    Watching The All Year Motorcyclist ‪@TAYM‬ review of the Speed Twin brought back the joy of riding my Bobber and Thruxton R and the buttery smooth and responsive T120 engine, I decided that this was going to be my next bike and it was going to be Orange! Thanks to Gary (Completely Motorcycles) a trade in deal was done and I said goodbye to my Tracer and hello to my gleaming new Speed twin in Baja Orange that I'm contemplating naming Donald in homage to the Orange man himself, President Donald J Trump :)
    And so the adventures begin with this new addition to the family and following the 2 rides out i've now done on the bike (at the time of writing this description), I have definitely made the right decision!

    Nice bike, I got my last bike ceramic coated from new and it looked spectacular once done. However, it is still difficult to keep clean, I did think that would have been easier but it takes the same effort although I got it coated mainly to protect it through the winter. The most difficult thing with cleaning is that to protect the coating you have to very careful about the cleaning products you use, things like wheel cleaners etc are all out. I probably wouldn’t do it again and would go back to good cleaning and ACF50 or similar protection.

    • @MerciaMoto
      @MerciaMoto  10 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks mate, I’ve never had a bike ceramic coated before, it’s more a protectant for the tank and paintwork. As you say ACF 50 does a pretty good job of protecting pretty much everything else. Cheers for the advise, greatly appreciated 👍🏻

      @@MerciaMoto I had my whole bike done by a local detailer I know who does do bikes but more high end cars. He had the bike for 5 days stripped it down, very deep clean and decontamination then applied the coating. It’s easy to clean the top end but the hotter parts such as the engine are as difficult as before although I’ve solved some of this by using a tornador. The tornador works really well all over but especially on the hard to reach parts on the engine. If you want a tank pad, personally I never use them and it would spoil the look of your tank but anyway it won’t stick to the ceramic coated surface properly so needs to be there beforehand.

    Well that came out of the Blue...or should that be Orange 😮😯😂 Happy new bike Dave, I hope you and Donald enjoy many happy miles together. He's not at all dissimilar to Bumble Bee, similar shape and style and both equally as loud in the colour department. I went out myself today for another test if the DJI ACTION 4 and wireless mic, yet another disaster, sound for the first 15 seconds then nothing and the footage is freezing. I suspect 4K 60fps for 30 minutes is too much, I'll try 30fps for a shorter period and reformat the SD CARD, so frustrating.

      Thanks mate, I’m chuffed to bits with the Triumph, I was really sad to see the Tracer go but it was the right decision. I record all my videos at 2.7k 60fps and haven’t had any issues, touch wood. Might be worth a go as the difference between 2.7k and 4k is barely perceptible unless watching on a large screen. Thanks as always for the encouragement 👍🏻

With running it in I have only used Road and Rain modes so far and with road mode it does respond and pick up rapidly but very smoothly, the power winds on without any snatchiness, I evaluate this against my 2015 Yamaha MT09 I owned a few year back that was very snatchy in what was the equivalent road mode.

      Which do you prefer - MT09 or Speed Twin in relation to performance, handling (twisties), rider/pillion comfort on longer rides (3 or so hours), overall fit and finish/ quality of bike? I am 55 so not looking for something that does ridiculous speeds - Australia has strict road rules with hefty fines - Max speed limit 110 -120 km/hr (68 - 75 mph).

      @@calvinmathys2023 hello Calvin, sincere apologies for not replying sooner. It’s very difficult to make a fair comparison between a Yamaha MT09 and the Speed Twin, they are very different animals. The MT09 is a far more aggressive bike, a lot of fun. The Speed Twin is far more ravined with much smoother power delivery. Fit and finish wise the MT09 is high quality as is the norm for Yamaha, however the Triumph is a superior quality product. Can’t comment on riding the bikes with a pillion as I never carry one. Luggage wise , I’ve toured on the MT09 using Oxford panniers and a 30 litre tail pack. Haven’t toured on the Triumph as yet, but can’t see any issues with using my Oxford soft panniers. Comfort wise, I didn’t have any issues with long rides on my MT09, although I did fit a comfort seat as the standard seat was like sitting on a plank of wood. I’m really looking forward to properly getting to know the Speed Twin this year and Friday it gets its 600 mile first service.
