17:46 I made a quillow for a woman with Parkinsons, and she asked for two ‘grab-loops’ to be sewn into the corners where you grab to turn the pillow square right side out over the folded quilt . That made it easy for her to turn it. For kids you could use webbing straps folded in half, overlapped at the base of the webbing to look like cat or dog ears, so when it’s turned pillow-side-out, the loops look fun. Thank you for sharing the pattern. It’s really fun for stack-and-whack and fussy cutting too. Because if you make one, you’ll want to make more ☺️🧵🪡
I made one 30 years ago ( although not pieced/quilted) when my daughter was born. Used it initially as a breast feeding support under my arm, then it became her blanket. She still has it and loves it! Keeps it on her sofa for watching TV!
I made my son one of these quillows 27 yrs ago when he was born and my granddaughter when she was born 4 yrs ago. I didnt use charm packs, i used yardage .They are fun to make. Thanks for sharing an old but great and useful item. ❤
I've made these for every person I know in themed fabrics of their choice. I just used two fabrics, no precuts. Everyone wanted one!!! And for the kiddos I machined embroidered their names on the pillow portion. Always was a guaranteed hit.
❤. Thank you so much for sharing this! I’ve been looking for a pattern for these. I want to make these for my local Rainbow Room. Children going into foster care usually don’t have many or any belongings and this is something they can keep and take with them where ever they’re placed.
Thank you so much for this tutorial and the free pattern! I might take my scraps and add a pillow case to the back of some of my small throw quilts! Then I can take them out of storage a use them as decorative pillows!!! Thanks again!😊
This is the 1st time I have seen one made & I Love It! Thank you Jen for showing us how to fold it. up & put inside, that is so helpful! I plan on making my 3 grandchildren one. Thank s for the free download & your Amazing Tutorial! Keep up the Good Work you are doing. The Tutorials are very Helpful!
I made them in the past. I made on for my cousin out of polar fleece. Her feet are always cold, so she uses the pocket to put her feet in when watching TV. They are really cool.
I’ve made several of these, one last year from Anne of Green Gables charm packsAND fabric. So great seeing you teach it. My kids/grandkids loved them. I used to just tie them, then went to quilting. Both works well. Thank you for bringing it back!
I made one for my daughter and husband when they got married so they could cuddle up on the couch and now I made one for my granddaughter. We live in Germany and my daughter and family live in the UK so when she visits the quill comes with her.
Thank you for sharing the pattern and how to make the Quillow. My kids had one when they were young. I plan to make one for our grand kids. They are great travel “blankets”. I might even make some for our cars.
I had a legal home daycare 25 years ago and made a bunch of these for my kids They were not quilted I just ran straight lines down from pillow They Held up well I also made some for the adults I knew The pillow was not quilted I used printed squares i used nice fabric appropriate for kids …. And pretty printed for adults. Super easy to make it was years later when they became popular I got the pattern from a magazine ,,
Thank you for this pattern & idea. I just finished a quillow for my nephew who is graduating from high school and headed to University of Oregon. I made the quillow in UO colors and fabrics. It came out great & he loves it!
Precioso !!!
We used to make these with 3 fabrics. A print (cotton or flannel) for the front with a coordinating fabric for the pillow and fleece for the back. They were fun to make. I even have a pattern by Boulder Creek Designs from 2003 that fancied them up with buttoned tabs on the sides.
What a nice project. Ones i bought a layer cake and i didn`t know what to do with it. This project is a wonderful idea for this layer cake. Thank you for this video.
Love your demonstration and pattern. Just wish you had done this 3 years ago when I was helping my neice make one for her 4-H project. 😊 We had a heck of a time finding any kind of instructions.
I think this would be a great car blanket, for emergencies, spontaneous picnics, or just cold passengers. It folds up nice and small, can be used as a blanket or a pillow ( way more comfortable than just resting your head on the window), and is nice and warm if you breakdown in winter.
Had to come on to get measurements this Friday for tomorrow! 😊 Sew I was thinking 🤔 again if I use my charm packs could I also use jelly roll to go on the sides?? My math sucks bad! As I have matching lol Anyone ?? Thank You 🙏
Hi Sharon - You could use jelly roll strips, just keep in mind the measurements. Since they're 2.5" wide, you'd have 4.5" strip if you sewed two of them together. If you sew 3 strips together, you can cut 5" blocks to make the math on it easier. Hope this helps! -Michelle www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video/585
Hi Mary Kay Harman - You should be able to add more squares to increase this project to your desired size. The quilt portion finishes to approximately 40" × 71.5". Depending on how much extra yardage you add to this quilt, you may want to increase the border size of your pillow portion to allow for the added bulk when folded together. Hope this makes sense! -Michelle
I’m making my first very Quillow & actually my first quilt. Do you stitch-in-the-stitch both vertically & horizontally? It’s hard to see from the picture on the back of the quilt. I see that it’s done on the pillow/pocket.
@@ShabbyFabrics Thanks for the fast reply. I’ve got some more stitching to do! And then 4 more Quillows as I’ve decided to make them for my five grandchildren.
Sometimes the quilting will "shrink" the backing and batting. This way, everything is the same when you assemble the quillow. Hope this helps! -Kristen
I am thinking on making the border of the pillow a tad wider and doing French seams for strength, what are your thoughts on this, I haven’t decided on the fabric yet as I want to do this for myself. I have been wanting to make a lap/snuggle on the couch robe for quite some time now…..
Hi Mickey - Because the seams on the pillow aren't exposed (and include the bulk of batting material), we don't think French seams would work the way you anticipate. Hope this helps! -Michelle
Hi Lianyi - While we haven't used minky fabrics to create this project, it should probably work the same, but you may consider making the size of the pillow portion a bit larger to accommodate for the bulk of the fabrics. -Michelle

I'm curious, why do you use a larger piece of backing and padding and then cut down, instead of cutting them to the correct size to begin with?
Sometimes the quilting will "shrink" the backing and batting. This way, everything is the same when you assemble the quillow. Hope this helps! -Kristen
Made one in home education class
These sure are fun to make! -Michelle
Would you recommend flannel???
Hi Vickie - Flannel would be a good idea too! You can also consider using flannel as the backing and making the top out of cotton. -Michelle

How fun!! -Michelle
Could I do this without using batting. If I use heavy materials
You can certainly choose to forego the batting if you wish. Thanks for your support and comment! - Abby
How do i get the link to the pattern?
Hi Jani - You can find the Free Download for the Quillow project here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video/585 -Michelle
So there's not an actual pillow. I love this idea, but I may have to add an actual pillow some way.
Hi Pamela - You could probably thicken the batting/pillow area. We're glad you enjoy this project! -Michelle
What is the finished size of the quilt?
Hi Karen! The Quilt finishes to 40" × 711/2" and folds inside quillow to approx. 171/2" × 171/2". Hope this helps! -Michelle
