I did the downloadable pattern. Instead of cutting the original pattern, I traced it onto a large sheet of parchment paper so I now have the original pattern and the actual rug size. Thank you for this pattern.
I've completed rug #2 and have a few more hints that I think may help (or not) - it came out very nice. 1. I found that if I pressed each strip upon completion of the folding and stitching on Both sides on my pressing mat that has the lines my strips came out much less wonky - I then did the same as I attached one to another. Really happy with the results. 2. I found that the needle got dull after my first mat - saw skipped stitches - so be aware not only to clean your machine but you will probably need a new needle. 3. My second roll of batting was truer to size but i still did each strip separately - easier for me. I found that if I turned it over and smoothed the piece and batting from both sides that the strips seemed to come out more even width. Again - thanks for such a great project.
I am all but done with my first rug, I cannot thank you enough for your video's. You do an absolutely wonderful job explaining everything. I have never been so pleased with a video showing exactly what and how to do the project. Thank you. For my first rug, I have to say, I am even impressed with myself. Not too bad! This is a really nice rug for a in front of a kitchen sink. I am moving back to Florida in January. This rug would be a very nice touch to my kitchen. I want something in teal. By making this rug I can get the colors I want. Thanks so much for sharing your video with all of us. You are a great teacher. Love it.

Thank you for posting this video Tammy, I used it as my guide! I just finished the rectangle and sliced rug for my kitchen and I am VERY pleased with the outcome!!! Of course I will make more rectangular (my favorite) rugs now!
I loved the video and making this.I did find that mine actually came out larger but I tend to do everything looser...it is so pretty and your video is great. Next time I will pay more attention of folding the material, but it is beautiful.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. It took me a long time, but I did finish my rug and it turned out great. One comment on a 'potential' improvement. (My project went a lot faster after I tried this) I cut about a quarter of an inch off the width of the batting roll so that when I fold it, the two ends of the material actually come together. This makes it much easier to fold the project for sewing, and makes the strips much more consistent. It's nice not to have to fight the materials every step of the way. I wish Bosal would make a 2.25" wide batting roll. I would purchase that version instead.
Thank you so much for the tutorial and pattern - I'm about 2/3 done with my first one and will be making more for sure. I do have several hints/suggestions that I've been jotting down and wasn't sure it this was the correct forum to list them in.

I have finished my rug and I love it! On to make a matching twin (ladies at quilt shop loved it too!). I will be try to be concise with hints/suggestions/observations. 1. My Kathadin batting strips actually measured 2 5/8 inches which threw me at first when I seemed to have excess when folding - I did but after a few different trials and realizing it wasn't me - I got the folding down - be patient and know you will have some excess in the center. I found that since I had some mini clips I used them on the opposite side of the fold which helped to keep things together. 2. I didn't find an advantage of laying multiple strips after each other - I didn't have to use as many clips (one less store trip as I had some from previous projects) and the strip was easier to manage at my machine - each to his own. 3. I HIGHLY suggest using a stilleto vs fingers near machine! 4. You may find it helpful to slow your machine down if that's an option. 5. Part way through, check your bobbin area for fuzz/lint as this project produces lots and its best to keep the machine clean. 6. If cutting your own strips, make sure to press the crease out before you lay the batting on. 7. When I was joining two rows of different lengths I used my frixion pen to mark the two rows where they would line up - easier than trying to hold them. 8. I'm NOT good at eye balling if I was pressing straight (found that out seeing the wonky) - got out my old press and cut mat with its nice lines and used that to straighten each row with iron. 9. I highly suggest before cutting the curve, once marked take it to machine and inside the cut line run a stitch - this will help so as not to pull any stitches out while cutting. Again - thanks so much for tutorial and pattern!
Thank you so much! We're so glad you liked the project! We've found a new notion that rolls the strips for you... it makes things so much faster! We're going to be showing that in a video soon! - Morgan
Great Tutorial! Doing Reno's right now but have saved this & that Beautiful English Countryside Fabric to order in a bit for this Beautiful Rug for my house. I Love It. Thank You.
Hi Mel! We have not tried that way as we do follow the pattern but we'd love to hear how it turns out for you if you try it! Stay safe and happy sewing! ~Leah
I have just started putting together strips for a pot mat (trivet) for the table. I used 2.25” rather than 2.5” for the batting. The 0.25” allows for the fabric wrapping around the batting making the centre’s match so much better. I tried with 2” but felt it needed that little bit more to fill the fabric.
I just finished my first jelly roll sliced rug. It was really easy and fun to make. I do have one comment....after I sewed all the strips together my rug was a smaller size than the pattern I used to trace on the rug to cut it out. I did sew the strips together as noted in the video and yes I did iron, iron and press and pressed it but still I could not get it to stretched to as big as the pattern. I was very careful making sure my seams were straight. I did butt my strips inside the double part of the strip. Was I suppose to just lay each strip right next to each other? I thought you nested those strips. Any suggestions?
After speaking to our sewing specialist she mentioned that the size of the Slice Rug depends on how tightly Katahdin is rolled in the strips and how tightly the seams are nested. -Kyla :)
When we add the binding and use a straight stitch, we're doing a 1/4 inch seam allowance. When we turn the binding and do the zig-zag, we set up a 5.5 inch stitch length and make sure to catch everything with that stitch. Hope that helps! - Morgan
Hi Tetelestai Creations - We are happy you enjoy this beautiful collection! We are sold out of English Countryside, but we can tell you that it was manufactured by Moda Fabrics, so you may still be able to find it somewhere. Thanks for watching! 💖 -Michelle
You'll cut your strips to include the selvage (you'll trim this off toward the end of the project). We haven't used the Bosal fusible strips for this project yet. Thank you for watching! - Morgan
Hi Lucy, are you referring to the free download? www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video/77/how-to-make-a-slice-rug Or the product (spray starch) Jen uses called Magic Sizing? -Michelle
When I pair the strips, is there a reason that I can’t use the same method as the rectangle rug - that is, placing the stitched seams together then zigzagging them? I use my edge stitch #10 foot to stitch the fabric tubes with a 1/8” seam and am not sure that placing the tubes back to back as you describe will work for me.
Hi Muriel! We use the Schmetz Chrome Jeans/Denim Needles - Size 100/16! You can grab yours here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/Schmetz-Chrome-JeansDenim-Needles-Size-10016-5ct-P66732.aspx Thank you for watching! - Sophie

Jelly Rolls are typically around $40 from quilt shops like ours (you can find them on sale for a little less sometimes) and the Katahdin is around $15 for 25 yards. You can make one Slice Rug from 1 Jelly Roll (or 31 2.5" strips if you prefer to use yardage) and 1 25-yard roll of Katahdin. - Morgan
We actually have both a paper pattern that you can purchase or a download. Yes, many people find it helpful to sew one direction and then the opposite direction with the next strip and alternate in that way to keep as straight as possible. - Yajaira
These are the regular sized Wonder Clips. The mini Wonder Clips are too small for the thickness of the strips, but the regular ones work perfectly. - Morgan
Thank you for watching! We have only used the #2 zigzag for this project but if you try the #16, let us know how it turns out! Happy sewing and stay safe! ~Leah
Hi Terry! You can find the free download from our website here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/Assets/Downloads/SliceRug_forDownload.pdf Thank you for watching! - Sophie
We're glad you like this project! An alternative to the zig-zag stitches would be any decorative stitch 6mm wide. You could also choose to hand stitch the strips for a more detailed finish. 💖 -Michelle

I am a beginning sewer and I’m trying to make this rug. I noticed as I saw my strips together they’re starting to curve and I don’t understand why as they’re all straight
Hello! That can happen if you're not sewing from different sides (i.e. feed a strip through with the bulk of the project to the left, then flip it around and sew the other strip opposite. We'd also recommend using your walking foot and not pushing/pulling the strip sets too much, as that can distort the fabric. There will be some curling/curving, even on the best rug, so after you're done, use a lot of Magic Sizing, press the rug, and leave under heavy book stacks or other similar item to help flatten after pressing. - Morgan
bit.ly/2M9ja7u...Look on the replies., and you will find it for free., I found and printed, although I already purchased. But good to know @@michellejaggard9657
The cotton batting is called "Bosal Katahdin". You can learn more about it here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/bosal-katahdin-100-cotton-batting-25yds-for-jelly-roll-rugs-P63981.aspx - Morgan

You could! We'd recommend following the method in the video with the strips. Or you could make the rectangle Jelly Roll Rug and then cut it into any shape you'd like. - Morgan
The white stuff is batting. We used Bosal Katahdin because it's precut in 2.5" strips so we don't have to do any extra trimming, but any of your favorite batting will do. We have 25yd and 50yd rolls available here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/bosal-katahdin-100-cotton-batting-50yds-for-jelly-roll-rugs-P67516.aspx Let me know if you have any other questions. :) - Morgan

I have just started putting together strips for a pot mat (trivet) for the table. I used 2.25” rather than 2.5” for the batting. ¡Feliz de que te guste este proyecto! ¡Gracias por tu comentario! 😊❤️ - Abby
Jennifer, Catawampus?! Are you also from central PA? I have only ever heard that term here! 😃 Thanks for this (another) great video! Jen
So glad you enjoyed the tutorial! Thank you so much for watching! - Morgan
I'm in Western NC and we say catawampus too lol
We say that in Texas also
We say cattywampus in SC too :)
Curious approximately how much does the supplies cost? Meaning the jelly roll and batting.
- Morgan
loved the tutorial. great job
Thank you so much! We're so glad you liked it! - Morgan
How do I download the actual paper pattern that you use, or can I buy the one you are using?
We actually have both a paper pattern that you can purchase or a download. Here is the link for the paper pattern: www.shabbyfabrics.com/p71521/slice-rug-pattern Link for the download: www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video/77/how-to-make-a-slice-rug Hope this helps and thank you for your comment! - Abby
I'm just wondering because my rug is a little wonky wouldn't it make sense to sew each strip in a different direction?
Yes, many people find it helpful to sew one direction and then the opposite direction with the next strip and alternate in that way to keep as straight as possible. - Yajaira
Are those wonder clips the jumbos? or the small ones? It didn't say. I have a bunch of the small ones but no jumbos....
These are the regular sized Wonder Clips. The mini Wonder Clips are too small for the thickness of the strips, but the regular ones work perfectly. - Morgan
Parabéns muito lindo meeesssmoooo!!!!!
Obrigado! Este tapete é tão divertido! Fique seguro! ~ Leah
It's wonderful!
Thank you so much! - Morgan
This is just awesome mam
What a fine work👍👍
Thank you!
Have you used stitch #16 which is a stepped zigzag instead of #2 zigzag?
Thank you for watching! We have only used the #2 zigzag for this project but if you try the #16, let us know how it turns out! Happy sewing and stay safe! ~Leah
Where do I go to get the printable pattern
Hi Terry! You can find the free download from our website here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/Assets/Downloads/SliceRug_forDownload.pdf
Thank you for watching! - Sophie
Do you have the video for the Jelly Roll Rug 2 Pattern ( Square Rug)?
Great question! We do not have a video for that pattern! However, if you have any questions we will be more than happy to help. - Yajaira
From afar this rug looks gorgeous, however, up close I hate the look of those ugly zig-zag stitches. What would you suggest as an alternative?
We're glad you like this project! An alternative to the zig-zag stitches would be any decorative stitch 6mm wide. You could also choose to hand stitch the strips for a more detailed finish. 💖 -Michelle
I would suggest thread that matches better. I think that will make the stitches less noticeable.
@@cathynuytten798 Agreed.
Olá! Você tem o molde e as medidas do tecido? Obrigada ❤🇧🇷🇧🇷

Sry for all the questions, is number 1, 33 inches from the solid line to the solid line? Because mine is reading 31" maybe I didn't line my pages up correctly 🤔
From the black solid line to the black solid line it should be 33"😊 - Yajaira
@@ShabbyFabrics still having problems what does Jen's measure from the top to the bottom?
Question...can a domestic machine be used for this?
Yes, we use domestic machines to create these! Thank you for watching! 💖 -Michelle
How and where can I buy the rug materials???
Here is a link with more information for this rug on our website! www.shabbyfabrics.com/free-downloads-and-video/77/how-to-make-a-slice-rug Hope this helps! - Abby
2 dogs 4 cats no grass. how do you keep it clean?
Ours are in low-traffic areas. They wash really nicely, though, so if they do get dirty, we don't worry too much about them. - Morgan
freese wonder if you could scotch guard it before it was used and just maybe stains wouldn't set in so much
How can I get the kit for the slice rug project?
We only have one slice rug kit available here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/search?sortOrder=6&q=slice+rug+kit -Michelle
Are those the big wonderclips or the small ones??
We use the regular size Wonder Clips (like the ones here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/Product.aspx?ProductId=47405&CategoryId=1446) - Morgan
What is the steam iron please. From?
This is the Panasonic 360° Freestyle Cordless Iron. Here is a link to shop on our website: www.shabbyfabrics.com/c5402/quilting-notions/panasonic-irons Hope this can help and thanks for your comment! - Abby
Is the rug washable?
Yes it is! Just lay it flat to dry and if there are any bubbles or wrinkles, use lots of steam and pressing to get it flat once dried. - Morgan
- Morgan
Shabby Fabrics Thank you for your response I was wondering about that myself
I tore it all out and I'm starting again.
@@ShabbyFabrics i am using my walking foot and have sizing which i will use after i complete the rug. I love these videos. Thank you for your input.
Love it, but where do I find the free download?

Wonderful!! I'll make one for ME .
We think that's a great idea!! ;) Let us know how your project goes. - Morgan
Nice, but I think if I were making this for an area with fair amount of traffic, I would use a heavier fabric than an expensive quilting cotton.
Definitely use heavier fabric if you intend it to be used as such -Michelle
What are you calling the cotton batting-hard to understand
The cotton batting is called "Bosal Katahdin". You can learn more about it here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/bosal-katahdin-100-cotton-batting-25yds-for-jelly-roll-rugs-P63981.aspx

I'm making a scrappy rope rug I wondered if I could turn it into the shape of your slice rug but the question is how?
You could! We'd recommend following the method in the video with the strips. Or you could make the rectangle Jelly Roll Rug and then cut it into any shape you'd like. - Morgan
Don't understand what is the stuff you used for the white material
The white stuff is batting. We used Bosal Katahdin because it's precut in 2.5" strips so we don't have to do any extra trimming, but any of your favorite batting will do.
We have 25yd and 50yd rolls available here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/bosal-katahdin-100-cotton-batting-50yds-for-jelly-roll-rugs-P67516.aspx
Let me know if you have any other questions. :) - Morgan
Have you ever thought about using this technique to make a quilt? Have you ever made a quilt like this?
That's a great suggestion! We have not used this technique to create a quilt, but if you choose to, please let us know how it goes for you! 💙 -Michelle
@@ShabbyFabrics I live in Florida so I probably don't need one that heavy but still, I may try. I definitely want to make some of the rugs you have taught us.
Awesome
Thank you!
Hey there! I have made a jelly roll rug...but it slides alot across the floor! Do have any ideas how to make it not slip??
We had the same problem! We recommend looking for non-slip rug tape or a rug mat to put under the rug so it doesn't move. This can be found at most big-box stores. - Morgan
