After I moved to the Southshore locals asked me where I was from. The Northshore I said expecting them to guess but instead one of them said oh the Notsure? Just over the Notsure bridge right? Huh? Yeah we aren't so sure about them up there either.

That's the key. You want to give money to help someone, you have to have the mindset that if you never get that money back, you're fine. This woman was nuts. It's not like she was 25. She's an elderly woman and that money was going to sustain her for the rest of her life. My mother always said to NEVER talk about your finances with anyone for reasons exactly like this. That girl would have never come to me because I'd just say, sorry, I've got no money.

I suspect this lady overestimated her business acumen when everyone celebrated her success post Katrina, and poured money into what she thought was a sure thing. It is difficult to rein in your own ego when you are on a winning streak. In a way, she and the hair dresser's daughter had the same character flaws - overestimated self-worth, blind to the sunken cost fallacy, and/or addicted to risk. This is both sad and enlightening. Despite WWL's intentions, I'm thankful for this story.

I'm sorry, but you've got to be...let me just be nice and say you're not very smart if you give away your life savings, PERIOD! The woman said, "I had money. I had a lot of money!" NO SHE DIDN'T!
Let's just say you work your whole life. You're now 64 and want to retire. You have $1.5 million saved up, paid off your house, your kids are out of the house and are doing well on their own. That $1.5 million is your nest egg. It's the way you're going to generate income every year. You live off of the interest that money generates. You can't be giving that money away TO ANYBODY! So when someone asks if you've got money to give them, the answer is NO! Otherwise, what are you going to live off of?

I worked as a dealer in Vegas and I saw people throw away their life savings and it was so sad.

Why do people consider gambling to earn money instead of legal work/labor?
Gambling does not favor the gambler. Be wise. It's better to beg than to steal. It's better to beg than to gamble. Theft and gambling are both sins before the Lord Jesus Christ.
Contacting your relatives, friends or local church for temporary financial support is better than to sin. Just don't forget to pay back what you borrowed.
