So the other day I entered the animal room just to see a whole army of ants attacking this one scorpion. It was my Hottentotta hottentotta (Congo Red Alligator Back Scorpion). Yes, I have faced ant problems before, but this one got me curious - All the ants seemed to be targeting this one particular scorpion only. There were four other scorpion enclosures beside it, but they only decided to go for one. Why?

I know it's been a while, but for future reference, I'm pretty sure those are sugar ants. Super tiny, solid black. As for why they were going after that particular scorpion... Did you perhaps handle something sweet before handling the scorpion or the sand prior to this incident? Even just a few grains of sugar is enough to entice 'em to investigate further, hence why they'd be all over the room. Keep all sweet treats well clear of this room, and be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after eating. Prevention is the best method by far.
Ants will send out scouts to find food. The ants were attracted to the various leftover entrails in the Scorpion's container. I recommend cleaning the container/anything they walked over, as they use a scent trail to lead other ants to the food and will return if they follow the trail again.

Vinegar has a good way of breaking up the scent trails so I recommend using it
Or wipe down the counters, floors, and shelves around the enclosures

For future reference, mix some borax with sugar water (you can find recipes online) and put it out in a container. It's extremely effective and dirt cheap to make. Takes less than a day in my experience.
I was going to recommend the same thing but under it's commercial product name in Australia, Ant-Rid.
That mixture has had zero effect on the ants in my family's kitchen, been trying for a few months now to get rid of these ants

The little Ant Bait things are to prevent infestations, not fight them. Scouts go in them and die, so colonies don't swarm potential areas of interest. Useful to have on camping trips, picnics or even your pantry.

Use Vaseline as a barrier around your cabinets to stop ants being able to cross it until you can completely get rid of the ants

I try using Vaseline to keep ants out but they literally suicide to make bridges with their bodies and ignore it.

Double sided sticky tape works as a prevention too because the ants get stuck and starve.

If you have access to borax, it works extremely well. My family has used it for years-just sprinkle it across their trails and they’ll track it back into the nest, which kills it. My mom has also experimented with a flat dish and small piles of the stuff, leaving it out near nests that have taken up in walls or cracks, and that seems to work as well.
Borax is also good for roaches. I know it is non-toxic for humans but I don't know how it would work around the Ts and scorpions.

They can't eat ants, ants contain formic acid and the ants are too tiny to be eaten by a scorpion that size

Sprinkle Cinnamon around some places. When ants inhale cinnamon it will suffocate and die. I put some on my windows in my bedroom because I’m a weirdo that eats in her room🤣

You can also place some clovers at the door/windows. The ants ain't gonna die but they hate the smell of cloves and cinnamon so they won't get close to that

You should have taken wet paper towels and wiped all the ants you can see and throw them away and you can mop the floor to wipe them away before you place the poison powder. Then let the powder kill off the left hidden ants

Raid ant drops work great. the ants will do the work for you by taking the poison to their queen.
Dude mix baking soda and powdered sugar I use to have a bunch of ants and they would eat it thinking it was just sugar and then die. If you find the source of the ants put it around there

I know it could be tedious work but moving all enclosures shelf by shelf and wiping down the shelves could also be a big help. I noticed a few carrying crumbs of some sort so they're finding a source for food somewhere unfortunately
Can you post a link to the tanks that you keep your scorpions in? Those looks insanely sick and I’d like to switch mine into them.

You can also mix baking powder and powdered sugar.
They will take it to their nest and feed it to the larvae, which killes them.
It is not an immediate solution but you get rid of them for a long period of time.

Hello there; I have a question for you because of those ants. Usually they come in packs if there is a insect or what have you has a smell to them be it close to death.. or something that makes them go crazy is why they gather like that. So I have to ask you this how old is that scorpion?
That’s what I was thinking. There’s a reason they picked that one. I would keep him isolated in case it’s not just old age and it’s something that could affect the others but that’s just me.

@@highjinx6519 Most likely an ant slipped into the cage for his leftovers, and the scorpion killed it (which releases a chemical attracting more ants) causing them to swarm his cage.
There's an ant bait that is a gel in a syringe that is boric-acid based which works pretty well. (Under the Combat Max brand here, but might go under some other name elsewhere.) Because its a gel, it can stick on walls or even upside-down areas. Seems to have enough of an attractant that ants aren't picky about it. Might want to see if you can find it, as a little bit does the job and the whole syringe will last a long time.

might be worth placing stuff around any potential entry points to make a barrier and preventative. or look into some traps you can keep around longer that will help control them. Hope everything continues to be good.

Who cares what he thinks
Ok I know this was 2 months ago. But I do also know that in the great circle of life, ants (among other animals & insects) will attack certain species of things, including roach eggs and such, to control the population of that species. This is Nature's way of balance. If there's too much of something in one area, nature finds a way to control that and maintain balance. Not just with ants, but spiders are also known to populate an area prominently where there's an abundant food source as well.
If there's an abundance of something an animal's prefers to diet on in particular, that animal will definitely be seen a lot in that area. Unless, of course, in the case where humans play an unfortunate role in the endangerment or extinction of any particular thing. Nature having nothing to do with that.
However, Humanity is no exception to natures course in maintaining balance, either.

The fact that they went for that specific scorpion itself. Makes me wonder if there's something wrong with that scorpion like it's sick it is going to die.
you should remove all enclosures out of that room. then clean all surfasses. ants leave a feromone trail for other ants to follow to food, so by cleaning you remove those trails. you should also kill as many as you can while trying to find their nest.

I say maybe you should get a spray barrier around your house, that acts like a boundary to most bugs. Here in the states it’s an exterminator that does that service and I’ve seen that work for up to two seasons on my own house.
Mix with diatomaceous earth and borax , use a small ketchup squeeze bottle place in small corners the perimeter of entire house everything which touches home. Must be repeated because of moisture.
do you have an insecticide in a form of chalks? thats what i use to protect my rack of T’s. i write down stuff using the chalk insecticide, it doesnt affect my T’s at all.

I have also used fresh cucumber to discourage ants in the past. Cut up thin slices and place it along the trail, I don't know why it worked but it seems to work every time xxx

DE is great stuff but will it hurt his tarantulas if they come in contact with it? I know it’ll hurt the scorpions because lots of people use it to keep them out of their homes here in Texas.
@@highjinx6519 I believe it may, I use ground cinnamon around Ts and scorpions. DE in dire situations. But around my reptiles it's been a great defense. I've never had a T come into any direct contact with it though.
@@andrewscreams3302 I would think it may too, I know it kills anything with an exoskeleton. I prefer it though over all the harsh chemicals though because it won’t hurt humans or pets unless they breathe it in.
@@highjinx6519 Yes!! And I know it's used in very small amounts to treat worms in dogs and cats. I've mixed it with water and sprayed it on my gardens and have had wonderful responses, as far as bugs go. Spray around the house in the fall and spring, keeps spiders outside.

The people that sold us our house had sprinkled it along all the perimeter in the inside of our house before we moved in and we just now started getting intruders again and we bought 6 years ago! And yes I’ve used it to worm my dog countless times. Can’t say enough what great stuff it is! And the best part is it’s natural. Glad so many others are aware of the benefits!

Here's a tip for ants, they have 2 stomachs one for themselves one to save food, so it looked like they where eating it and storing it to give it to the queen
