When I was a little and stupid boy I was standing next to ant colonies to catch those with big heads (soldiers - I didn't know back then why they're so big) and ripped their heads off. I hate myself for what I was doing...
I think the reason they didn't move the queen is that the old nest still suited their needs better and was still the main nest. Or they were using both nests because their colony was just that large. I'm sure you agree that physically moving the Queen yourself is a last resort for if you need to get ants out of an old nest so making them want to move instead is usually a lot better and its always worrying when the stubborn ants have other plans.
Yeah it was definitely a last resort for at least a couple reasons. Their old setup was a maze of tubing and it didn’t look all that organized. The other reason was because I needed their old nest for another colony rather soon. I’m hoping I can prepare to move them soon!
Just imagine, this Queen births that entire colony... I wonder what would happen if we put another building next to it and expanded the house? She'd grow it... I wonder how many colonies it would take for another Queen ant 🐜 to be born?

@@jaywerner8415 actually the queen does lay princess eggs. the queen lays an egg that naturally have more of this insulin like protean in their bodys, and the worker ants will feed and fertilize them better eventually becoming a Queen. also the queen selectively chose which eggs get fertilized. the fertilized ones will become infertile females, unfertilized will become fertile males (called a drone) and the males only purpose in life is to mate with the queen and die shortly after
Reminds me of when I was 5yo and there was an old dog house at my neighbor's that had an ant nest in it. The roof was rotting away so we peel it back to see thousands of ants and their larve. Really an unforgettable sight. Great video!

My brother in Christ, I hope you have a filter on that aspirator. Otherwise RIP your lungs. Anyways. When I have a queen that won't move I use heat or cold to get her to move. I put a reptile heat pad next to the colony and connect it to their new home and they leave right away. I've also had success using ice packs (depending on the time of year and species I don't want to subject the ants to anything they won't find in nature or that could hurt them, just make the old nest uncomfortable) Anyways nice colony I guess?
