So I played METAPHOR: REFANTAZIO early...

- It goes without saying that ATLUS has made some of my favorite games ever, but Metaphor is a whole new ball game. With the school life left behind, what is the Persona team doing to make Metaphor stand out? SO SO SO MUCH!!!

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Visions of Mana, Refantazio... We are dining well this year. What a time to be alive :D
Trails through daybreak was also fire !
@@gnarlyboyjai Visions of Mana suuuucked.
Yeah as JRPG fans this is a great year
Rebirth is multiverse TRASH.
@@heretic0014 Back under the bridge troll
Easily my most anticipated new game for the rest of the year (followed by new-old Dragon Quest III). The JRPG hype train is never ending, so happy and grateful we’re here!!
3 for me. This one, DQ3, and the Romance of the three kingdoms 8 remake. (And for those who never played that series, 8 was probably the best esoecially for those who like alot of RPG elements in their 4x games....Think game of thrones on steroids LOL).
And yeah, its been a good year for jrpgs and strategy games!
Easily most anticipated game! Thanks for the preview.
I am a huge persona fan I cant believe its the first time I am hearing about this but definitely excited for it
After Star Wars Outlaws pissing off Matty, he needed this. Or he played Outlaws after playing this game, hopefully that wasn’t the case
Lol no-one even remembers there's been another Fire Emblem game since Three Houses.
A spin off and a main game lol
The main game after three houses wasn't as good, it mostly focused on combat and then forgot about the social element.
Let's just say it wasn't... Engaging
It was really good animation wise but they really ditched everything else
I would rather throw myself at a wall repeatedly than play Fe Engage it is potentially the worst game I have ever played
Im glad you cover my favorite 2 game series Persona and fallout . Keep up the good work
I am glad this game is coming to PC day and date with consoles like persona 3 remake.
The art style is really cool
"Fire Emblem's latest entry in Three Houses"
Yeah, Matty, I pretend that Engage never happened, too
Hahahaha! I was thinking mainline games, but maybe that was an inaccurate description.
@@MrMattyPlays Isn't Engage mainline? I always thought it was, although I can see how thinking of it as mainline can be odd.
Engage is a mainline game, isn't it?
@@Matthew-ij3zmtechnically I guess, but its more of a anniversary fanservice title rather than a standalone story typical of mainline entries. The story and OG characters were nothing special, but I thought the actual gameplay and visual fidelity was probably the best Intelligent Systems has delivered with the franchise. Makes me excited to see a stand-alone narrative with that level of polish.
@@JoshLeitzel yeah, graphics were great generally speaking, I really liked the animation and the style overall, it just wasn't as engaging as 3H and many previous FE games to me.
Had no idea this game existed and just added it to my wishlist from your preview. Thanks Matty!
Xbox’s crappy marketing is holding the game back from reaching a broader audience.
They want to pretend it’s not going to be on PS5 and Steam, even though it will.
@@CarbyGuuGuuFr
@@CarbyGuuGuuI’m not sure about that, I was getting way too many ads for this game about a month ago, it seems that the marketing is really inconsistent. Kind of like they spent a ton of money for ads earlier in the year and have nothing left. Marketing in gaming has been weird this year, even Sony seems to choose like a specific month for ads then we hear nothing, Ubisoft does way more ads after their games release from my experience on RUclips.
@@CarbyGuuGuuCalm down little fanboy. 😅
@@alanramirogarcia2886bruh hes right, the marketing has been terrible. idc about console wars, they just haven’t been marketing the game well.
it also doesn’t help that atlus games have been primarily playstation focused for its entire 20+ year lifespan of games. thats where ALL OF THE PLAYERS are
What? If we can't date our arms teacher, we riot! 😂
No romance in this game haha
Being able to date your teacher was great. Worked as well in the game as in real life.
Sir we need you to come down to the station
Is P5 the only game where you can pursue your teacher? Cuz I distinctly remember her turning you down in that game. You don't actually date.
What's the teachers name and asl?
@SolidSnake240 she doesn't turn you down per say she just tries to distance herself from you cause of the whole teacher student thing. You can date her
@@SolidSnake240she does sorta just to distance herself bc she’s aware the relationship would be weird but then you can date her afterwards further into the social link
Honestly, I wish the modern Final Fantasy games combat were more like this.
Square doesn't care about the fans. They want in on the action game crowd. Final fantasy as we knew it is dead and gone.
@@Nolifeterranthat's why they've been making games like Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default.
@robardian3697 either of those final fantasy?
@@Nolifeterranin the ways that matter, yes
@@Slater2113 that's my point
As a huge Persona fan myself too, all I need to hear is Matty say it’s good and I’m sold lmao. Definitely a day one regardless of reviews for me.
This game seems really, really good.
Ok I seen enough into the video and finally confirmed Atlus didn't cheap out and made Random NPCs with FACES! No more Persona Creepyness
Thank you! I took my vacation week this Fall for it, haha. Very excited. It's a fine time to be a JRPG fan.
I just love how the protag and the first few main characters look like Makoto, Yu Narukami and Mitsuru cosplaying fantasy characters :D
I'm so hooked by how the travelling would work, like days off in Persona games, gives me serious Frieren vibes with the journey/travelling and spending quality filler time with the team
This has the potential to be a classic imo, probably gonna be the best jrpg of the year
Or game of the year as a whole
@fseiba6718 the only issue I see is that Turn Based Games in todays era never win goty lol
@@morgana818 Jrpgs in generall.
I still haven’t made the dive into any persona or SMT games, but I enjoy watching Matty discuss them, for when I eventually one day jump in.
Just be prepared cause saying the games are long is an understatement. In persona 5 royal alone I have over 250 hours lol
This game is so much different than the original teaser art work
Well yeah wasn’t that like a really really long time ago
Great video, Matty! So stoked to play this.
i’m so relieved to see this video and your positive thoughts. I randomly saw this game pop on on my recommended for me on amazon, and because i saw atlus i pre ordered the day one edition to add to my collection of atlus steel books. I had no prior context to what this game would even be like lmao
Awesome video! It was also so cool seeing being able to recognize Daniel Alba from GVG in your footage of the venue, another gaming channel i love!
I am sooo happy to hear that ATLUS is not abandoning its turn based combat..I have been excited and yet worried for this one that they would leave it behind. Thanks to your review I am definitely on board with picking this up on release date!!!!
SO PUMPED FOR THIS GAME. Thanks for covering this one!!
The most recent Fire Emblem game was Engage, but I'm not surprised you forgot. It seems like everyone did.
11:24 You don't need to imagine that hard. Persona 1 and 2 exist, lol
Do they exist though? Sure doesn’t seem like it these days.
Yeah, I was like, "But that already happened?" XD.
Exactly what I was gonna say
I can tell Matty is excited about this game, haha.
This is my game of the year before i've even played it.
Looks AMAZING Matty!!!
I’m in love with the art style in this game. I just PRAY it has a solid HDR implementation.
The art direction for this game is very refreshing and interesting.
Even Matty got a preview?! YES! LET'S GO!!
lol backhanded compliment. The guys an underground titan in gaming. He interviewed Todd Howard dude 🤣
Thank you for making this video!
I preordered *ONE* game this year…. and this is it.
When I heard about the talent behind Metaphor a few weeks ago in a HappyConsoleGamer video, I was immediately sold.
This game is totally flying under the radar and I don’t think folks realize how amazing it’s going to be.
Been looking forward to this game since it was first announced! Glad to know you enjoyed your time with it.
I'm so happy the people who got to preview the game are saying it's good 🥰 I can't wait for October!
11:46 so persona 1 and 2
Edit: which are elements I do want persona to bring back along with the arcana affinity system but ofcourse more modernized version of those systems. Mixing it with how modern persona works.
No way Matty got to play one of my most anticipated atlus games!! Goated reviewed man
This is going to be a huge game this year
The Persona dev team can take my money for this game!
Metaphor will be a great game (because I trust Atlus) before Expedition 33 release. It will be probably contender for 2024 GOTY for me 🔥
Both games gonna be fire
@@jelitejbzzz I believe so, turned based players are eating well
@@Sairento-kun yea man I'm hyped gonna buy it at launch just to support metaphor. I probably won't get to sit down and play it till around Christmas though cause of work and other games 😂😂
Yeah imagine a Persona game, where all party members can use different personass. The series did start with 3 after all....
Damn three houses catching strays like that, how dare you.
My biggest worry is getting it this fall vs waiting a few years for the 'complete' version
Honestly wouldn't worry about complete version years later unless you like the original. I was glad I played the original persona 5 as Royal changed a lot of stuff I loved about the original like the resource management aspect is heavily downgraded, the game was easier and they changed Takemi voice actor.
Overall I think experiencing the original version of the game is almost always great experience and that the enhanced versions are not just total upgrades but they tweak a lot of things to where it can actually be good experiencing both versions.
Matty i have to say you make great videos, im not the biggest fan of persona like games. But watching you're videos make me want to try something like it and maybe this may be the one. Like i said great videos keep them coming Matty. Peace ✌️
The best entry point is Persona 5 Royal in case you decide to try the series. The new one, Persona 3 Reload, is also a decent start, but it being a mostly 1 to 1 remake of the original some mechanics were left as they were instead of being improved to make the remake as faithful as possible to the original
Excellent preview that only helped reaffirm my going all in on this. Definitely my most anticipated game of the year and this is a year where we got FFVII:Rebirth in it!!
Between this, Astro Bot and Sparking Zero this fall is peak.
Facts
Fantastic coverage, easily my most anticipated goty.
One of my most hyped games yet most unknown. Just hope it feels different from persona but man I’m hyped
Persona in a fantasy setting? Im so hyped!!!
I’m so hyped for this. Even just seeing new art and character designs from Shigenori Soejima makes me happy, let alone the game being directed by the Persona director Hashino. Can’t wait.
I'm incredibly hyped for this. I have this pegged for my goty. Or at least the only thing that has a shot at beating ff7 rebirth
❤ the content brother. Glad to see this covered!
So excited for this. This could be my GOTY
Normal person imploding because they can't contain themselves and mention the person.
The hype is real.
The way front/backline works seems like it was drawn out of Etrian Odyssey, which is also an ATLUS series.
Nothing significant but I'm happy they're throwing bits of their less popular stuff in the pot as well.
That's how it worked in Final Fantasy VII as far as I remember.
Lost Odyssey had this as well, but the back line's protection was weakened if the front line took damage.
Wish they'd remake (not reimagine) Lost Odyssey 😥.
Yo, changing your party's archetypes sounds way cool!
I will definitely be picking this up but not until the complete edition comes out.
Smt 5 vengeance made me like Atlus. The best Rpg I have ever played it took me 52 hours to complete and it was well worth it. Metaphor Refantazio looks promising.
Oh i am happy to hear this. I wasn't too sold on the graphics of this game when its revealed.
Great video. Thank you
Awesome! Really excited for this game. I rarely pre-order games these days but decided to for this game. Looks great from everything I've seen.
Game looks so good! Can't wait!
I’m just happy to play another turn based game. I just binged P3P, P3R, P4, P5, P5R, SMT3N, SMT5V and Soul Hackers 2 after binging 23 Final Fantasy games in a row. I platinum trophies all those games.
Right now in the meantime I’m changing pace by playing Cyberpunk 2077 for the first time and then The Witcher 3 DLC before Metaphor comes out.
One of the other games I'm excited for this year
This is my 2024 game I’ve been looking forward too. Black mid wukong was disappointing but I put my hopes too high for that one I think. & this’ll probably be the game to pull me away from Elden ring for awhile & that’s great cause I LOVE persona games
The fact that there's a way to make all party members viable via the archetype system is really good. As much as I love the persona game in general it's always frustrating that certain party members are better than others in certain dungeons. Like for instance in persona 5 Haru is damn near useless in her own specific palace since she's way weaker in general and by that point in the game you have what you need as Joker so she becomes irrelevant in her intro
The travel and chat system is something I wish Starfield did. Especially if travel between planets was a thing. Add in some anomalies and other radiant interruptions (emergency broadcast, pirates, etc) plus social and crafting time would have served that gaming experience Starfield lacked. So props Atlas.
Game looks fantastic
Looks great, thank you for the in depth look
This was the first video RUclips had lined up that wasn’t from one of the gaming “news” outlets. I loved seeing the set up they had and the concept art on the walls looked great. I ordered the special edition, I haven’t pre ordered a game since…guess. The game that killed preorders imo. They packed that special edition with tons of JRPG fan bait. A cloth map! lol sounds so silly, but I can’t wait to have the game and the SE goods.
This year has been great for Shin Megami Tensei fans. First we got Persona 3 Reload, then we got SMTV Vengeance, next month we're getting Persona 3 dlc and in november we are getting this game.
Isn't it coming out in october?
Not all SMT fans are Persona fans.
@@FSVR54we know. They bring it up every chance they get
@@xxsay_bye_byexx1824yeah October 11th so I don't know where they got November from
As someone who never baught into the well established and believed propaganda that insists on immersiveness of a silent protagonist, I'm so happy our MC is voiced in this game.
its a give and take with silent vs speaking MC
it isn't inherently good
I for one dispise the silent protagonist shtick cause they feel so bland and boring. Like the one in 3 houses. It's just so creepy that he/she never actually speaks except for when you fight
Chad Kroeger knows good JRPG. You should give Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth out! They have similar fast paced turned base combat!
I love FF7 so much, but I cannot believe my hype for this game. It's gonna be so good.
As much as I wanna play it, I might just wait for the Golden Royal edition.
Honestly, I wasn't clicked by this game since the beginning. What I loved about persona since persona 3 from 2007, was the fact it runs away from this medieval thematic and now Metaphor does what I dislike about rpg aesthetic 😂. I hope I can give this game a change someday
Front line and back line positions used to be in final fantasy during the turn based era before FF10.
I actually watched another video from someone who previewed this game and they stated that once you out-level an enemy enough you won't enter turn-based combat and will simply eliminate them on the spot.
This looks amazing.
Great video. This game definitely has the best menus I've seen. Also very disappointed no fan service, but still excited for the game
always liked persona, also, the persona series was also a big inspiration for me to try game dev, and I'm kinda excited and bumbed out that Metaphor is absolutely, and it is more true the more I learn about it, the game I wanted to make haha, the more you talk about it, the more I'm like "damn, but that's,,, that's my ideia!!!"
2:30 so im multitasking and listen to this video and first thing i see when i look over is Strohl on the ground and I say out loud: "HOLY SHIT HE'S DEAD!"
Persona 3 reload and shin megami v vengeance have been some of the best games I’ve played this year, can’t wait for something completely new with this game
This looks like if Atlus made Three Houses. I'm sold.
i have been waiting for this game since it was announced, i can't wait more!!
I knew about this, not really on my radar, but now I'll look into it more, hopefully find something new to play
I’m so excited for this game! Atlus doesn’t miss
atlus coming with another banger
We have been in another golden age of rpgs yhe last couple years now.....its so many good ones that i still have backlogged because i cant keep up lmao i love it
This game comes out 2 days before my birthday. Da Missus already knows what's up!😂
I'm going to buy this precisely because it's medieval fantasy and not the classic persona setting.
I'm a big fan of that setting and the game looks pretty mature and dark. Berserk vibes.
My most anticipated game of the year man. Im gonna think of this as my personal persona 6
Silent Hill 2 and Metaphor ReFantazio in the same month? Hell yeah
Definitely picking up the collectors edition for this game. Cant wait
Whats funny is a game called blue dragon had some mechanics that are now becoming a thing in other turn based games
This is the game I've been waiting for this year.
I’m just grateful it’s coming to PS4 so I can play it, I don’t have a PS5 just yet.
