I'd say Digital Devil Saga rather than main line SMT, honestly. The main gameplay revolves around a set cast of playable characters who have their own innate characteristics, but can be built around using a communal resource outside of money in order for them to fit any role, and if you're smart about team building than you can spent press turns to throw out big team attacks Honestly the only thing missing is a bit of cannibalism and it's good to go.
16:44 HELLO???? WHY IS HER VOICE SO BEAUTFIULL??! She came in with FULL confidence and I cannot be more happy! Her voice over Buns' dialogue is also such a funny contrast. I would love to see more videos where you two collab.
I was just referring to the design. It doesn’t have anything to do with the demons you summon in smt or persona. In metaphor, fear and anxiety are major themes that gets explored. I think the developers saw a similar message in Bosch’s works.
I think it's pretty hilarious that Atlus managed to make the villain look like 3 separate characters at the same time and every single time someone makes the comparison, you can tell if they're relatively normal (Griffith), too deep in the Atlus sauce (Lucifer) or just boomers (Reinhard von Lohengramm) and I think that is completely an achievement on Atlus's part and not a statement on the enduring status of stereotypes in the media we consume.
One of the first things that came to my mind was Reinhard when playing the game and glad somebody else also found this similarity :) Although I'm 40 years old, I don't consider myself a boomer yet :D
My wife described the combat music as, "Sarumon attempts opera" and I honestly cannot get an image of Christopher Lee yelling at orcs out of my head...
More People should mention that humans in Metaphor are heavily inspired by works of Hieronymus Bosch. One with a heart on their head is a straight up copy of a creature He had in one of his works. Stylized, but still.

Slammed through this game in just under a week, 60 hours later and it's my GotY. Atlus has had an incredible year, and this is the crowning jewel. One of the strongest, most consistent casts I've ever seen. Not a single party member or even Follower ever got on my nerves. It was genuinely *hard* choosing which Follower I wanted to spend time with on any given day because I adored their stories so much. And the villains all have their charms. Louis is a wonderful villain. I hate him, but he has this raw charisma and consistency behind his ideals that I can't help but enjoy. Music was top notch. It didn't have the same level of sheer style as P3 and P5, but it has its own identity and bombast behind it that lodges directly in your brain. Combat is great, though it does admittedly start devolving into Rocket Tag. Ambush and win, get ambushed and die. Love the Archetype system, though I do wish there'd been some more elemental options available across the classes. The story and themes are so gooooood. Did not see any of the twists coming, and Atlus handles the heavy and topical themes very respectfully. It's never just "Magical Button to End Racism." It's recognized that there is no easy win button for the deep problems. It takes time and work. And the metatextual narrative is great. All in all, 10/10, Atlus crushed it.

What I love about the book is that when you introduce it to people the way they react makes sense based on their background. The members from better off background and "higher" races tend to be more positive about it, at most wondering if it's achievable. While those from more precarios background critic it. Like some characters literally critic the notion of "equality" along the lines of equal rules just let the strong crush the weak which is a critic of modern society. While the game is overall very obvious with its themes there are still a couple more subtle things that those who know how can spot. The games blind optimism towards what sounded basically like liberal democracy kind of annoyed me at the start but the more I progress the better it gets.
Between that and the other candidates with their goals for attaining kinghood, Metaphor does a *really* good job of showcasing how blind optimism and hope by themselves can't just magically fix things or make the world hunky-dory. You can have a goal in mind, but without empathy, forethought, and seeking (heh) understanding of others from different walks of life, you're only going to push narrow ideals that help a minority at the expense of the majority. Shoot the whole "my friends are my power" JRPG thing actually hits hard in Metaphor's case *because* of each party members' experiences due to their tribes, and the trust they have in sharing it with the Protagonist (and vice versa).
@@izzy1356 hell the whole "you need both ideals & the drive to get them done" bit is also really shown as we learn just what the late king was like because yeah, the late king really would think a magical election with barely explained rules would somehow fix problems.

Bro. Lemme tell yall. I haven’t really liked playing Jrpgs for YEARS. The last one I actually enjoyed was BEFORE persona 5. And I love P5, I would just rather watch it than play it. But seriously I am currently playing the demo and it’s genuinely everything I have wanted for a jrpg FOR AGES. I’ve CRAVED a game that’s absolutely STUFFED with deliberate art style and direction. That was so amazing, awesome and so cute. The review makes me want this game more. Plus the cameo of your wife towards the end was so sweet and cute. Keep up the amazing work Buns and great Buns wife.
This video is wonderful for several reasons - thanks for the food as always, Buns. 10/10 - but I think my favourite little detail was realising you actually named the protag 'John ATLUS'. So much of my humour is your fault, cause that one thing nearly killed me.

The Butter Buns is back and better than before with a side of some good ol' hard boiled egg 🙌🙌🙌 (Hope you're feel better Buns, and Thanks Anya for lending your voice 💓)
I love the character designs for Junah and Loveless. It really makes me dream of a persona game set in a 60/70s era with vibrant hippy aesthetic and a soundtrack inspired by Jimi Hendrix, Cream etc
I will say, looking at the character models really give me Fire Emblem: Three Houses vibes, which isn't a bad thing mind you. I think it's a good idea to have low quality models, in order to have a lot more running in the background, and an easier optimization process too. This is definitely a game JRPG fans need to pick up!
Fun fact! Most of the human designs in the game are heavily inspired by (if not directly copied from) the works of Hieronymus Bosch, a dutch painter from the late 1400's.
I was shocked by how merciful the time limit was. As long as you make sure you’re always doing something productive, you’ll likely be fine. I maxed all stats and bonds with more than 2 weeks to spare.
it wasn't merciful enough for me sadly. It took me a long time to find my footing and the first dungeon took me nearly all 10 days to complete and that crippled me for the entire rest of the game. Even with finishing the ensuing dungeons in one day.
@@livviegoat I can feel your pain. I also wasted multiple days on the first dungeon, thanks to me not yet realizing that the mage’s passive skill basically gives you infinite MP as long as you’re patient.
Yooo, I didn't know all that about it being LITERALLY A METAPHOR, that's really cool actually... I'm getting reminded of Ni No Kuni 2, honestly, with the overarching plot of "become king of the whole world by going to a bunch of different biomes and fighting monsters to make the locals love you." That game has a place close to my heart, with all its fantasy-races and biomes and world building, despite its somewhat shallow G-rated ending. Maybe I have to play THIS game for ideas on how to write a fix-it au for NNK2 :3 PS - Hi Eggs! Congrats on your big debut! :D
i literally played nothing but this for 2 weeks. as in when i started any freetime i had that wasnt used for groceries and other adult stuff i was playing metaphor. 2 weeks later and roughly 90 hours of playtime, i did some ng+ prep, i beat it and man oh man it is a good ride. atlus took all their best SYSTEMS across persona and smt and put them in a game that with its world and story is not bound by other franchise restrictions and can be its own thing. which i feel atlus really needed and it shows. this game is just top quality top to bottom.
I played the demo and I really want it for the Xbox!! It’s so good. Very persona vibey. Maybe better. So glad to see you doing the video for this game Mother Buns!
I’ve been dying waiting on this and her for beginners. Take your time buns, get better soon. And put those out when you feel better, so I can watch them repeatedly at work to try and imagine playing it 😭😭❤️
This game does the topic of racism and politics very well. It isn't preaching even though it literally is preaching. I don't really know how it strikes that sweet spot, but it does.
This game is absolutely on my radar now. Great video Buns! Also that was so nice of your wife to do extra voiceover to take the edge off you. And can I just say, she sounds like a fully professional speaker across the board with how she read your words off the page. Much love
"John Atlus" - Nice one. Missed a bit the insert of that one painting by Hieronymous Bosch, that features like three of the enemies one can find in the game as well. Never expected that painter to be featured in a game, so seeing those enemies being a nearly 1:1 extract, was a really nice surprise. (Well, for me, at least.)
Dang, you've talked me into pausing the video and bought the game at 8:10. Now discovering via comments I get a wife cameo, awseome! Watching whole thing while game downloads, then starting it up!
I still love going from starting the game & immediately going "oh it's the who's who of ATLUS mechanics" to hitting a very specific story point & going "OH IT'S THE WHO'S WHO OF ATLUS MECHANICS". If you know, you know.
3:15 Acktually, Buns, his name is "Will Protagonist" in the American version. I personally like his Russian name better, because he shares it with a beeg gobbie robot: Alexander.
Made my day seeing your video played this game when it came out and was thinking of ya when I played it, especially the slap of music. Glad you had time to make this video, take care of yourself, keep doing you, and thanks for making people smile, take care!
Its cool to see that you gave Hulkenberg the Brawler too. Right now my party is Protagonist with almost every archetype with Magic Seeker, Wizard, and Commander being his strongest jobs. Strohl - Swordmaster, Cleric, Faker Hulkenberg - Magic Knight, Pugilist, Mage Heismay- Assasin, Sniper, Faker Streya - Masked Dancer, Faker, Mage, Healer
I loved how most of the humans were from The Garden of Earthly Delights. A famous painting serving as the design language for them was *chef’s kiss.* loved all 60hrs of the first run
17:45 YOU CAN FIX THIS ON PC! I just beat the first main dungeon and I'm so mad didn't find this out sooner. If you're playing on a good pc, increase the rendering scale, double it if your pc can handle it. It makes everything look a billion times better
I'm 60 hours into it. The easiest way to describe the game is that its basically a reskin of Persona 5 with Final Fantasy's Job system, a touch of Berserk, and a splash of Attack on Titan.
@@LivingGuy484yes it’s very very good. Im also 70 hours into it, probably around halfway through based on the calendar and I’m loving it. Also the berserk influences are CRAZY in this game. Also much of the themes/art are European renaissance/enlightenment based.
My only complaints with the game are that P3 Reload spoiled me on fully voiced Social Links and I love the voice acting in Metaphor so much I want to hear more of it with voiced Social Links. Lastly, Gallica's social link gets done dirty. From the prologue I was expecting to have more of those night talks with Gallica that they setup, but to my disappointment that was only in the prologue. The most noticeable instance is a scene in Brilehaven where Gallica basically just says: "Yeah, I'm here too." *RANK UP!*
A new video, we are blessed! And now I unfortunately have to pause it and play/finish Metaphor first before coming back, this is a game I wanna experience as blind as possible. X) Have some food for the algorithm!
Atlus: We liked your music in Persona 5. Whatchu gonna do about Refantazio? Shoji Meguro: Buddhist monk rapping in Esperanto. Atlus: What? Meguro: Did I fucking stutter?
The novel is not based on our reality or even our utiopia. It is based on a book called utopia from 1512. And since ideas constantly evolve and change it is not really a vision anyone has nowadays.
The best way I have come to describe this game is "What if Persona 5 actually stuck the landing?", because it was able to do the revolutionary spirit and societal consciousness stuff without contradicting itself or falling on a bunch of rakes.
The algorithm kept this from me for 4 days?! Heresy. The wifey killed it; loved hearing Buns’ “voice” still stay consistent even when she took V.O. duty.
Everything about this game I found absolutely perfect...except the dungeons. Every dungeon save one I found boring to the point of offensive, especially after P5's incredible dungeon design. But the combat, the art, the music, the themes, the story...dungeons aside, you owe it to yourself to experience this game. It really is something special.
Yeah I find myself having to put myself in the mindset that "I'm in a fantasy world where there are typical fantasy catacombs and forests and castles but there's a huge difference to the context" and I enjoy the dungeons more, I'm not expecting the absolutely exhilarating and mind bending dungeons of Persona and SMT because it's a relatively more grounded game (even though it's taking place in an apparently Fantasy inspired setting) than say P4 or P5 or SMTIII Nocturne or SMTV:V. It's a shame but I personally just take it is as a neutral point rather than something that detracts from the experience
Been looking forward to this, despite already having 159 hours in the game (plus 60 in the demo) and the platinum trophy. Great video and hope you're feeling better

The human designs were based on the works of a Dutch painter Heironymus Bosch. He was a religious person and drew the fears of devils, sins and hell.
so technically they're demons not humans? future smt/persona summons?

It doesn’t have anything to do with the demons you summon in smt or persona.

When you watch a review for a game you've already bought , know you're going to love but yet to start 100+ journey.
I had the same impression and I loved FE:TH!
Been almost obsessed over this game even now I'm at the end.
Maybe I have to play THIS game for ideas on how to write a fix-it au for NNK2 :3
PS - Hi Eggs! Congrats on your big debut! :D
19:10 From the bottom of my heart, fuck the protopet posessed by an american doll. That's the stuff nightmares are made of
i literally played nothing but this for 2 weeks. as in when i started any freetime i had that wasnt used for groceries and other adult stuff i was playing metaphor.
Get well soon, Buns. It's not the same when your video isn't voiced by the jrpg gremlin herself
Super Butter Boooty is back!? Well bun my biscuit!
Much love
Camping road trip mechanics? So its Final Fantasy XV + Persona? Okay yeah I'm sold.
I swear the most shocking thing in this game was the protagonist actually speaking!
Thank you Mrs ButterBuns for helping get this video out on time ^^
"John Atlus" - Nice one.
3:05 - I paused this video and scanned the right side of my room to work out wtf made that noise! Why would you do that to me? ;_;
Dang, you've talked me into pausing the video and bought the game at 8:10.
Right now my party is
Protagonist with almost every archetype with Magic Seeker, Wizard, and Commander being his strongest jobs.
Strohl - Swordmaster, Cleric, Faker
Hulkenberg - Magic Knight, Pugilist, Mage
Heismay- Assasin, Sniper, Faker
Streya - Masked Dancer, Faker, Mage, Healer
I loved how most of the humans were from The Garden of Earthly Delights. A famous painting serving as the design language for them was *chef’s kiss.* loved all 60hrs of the first run
This game is "what if Persona 5 stole job roles from FFV/Bravely Default" and it's awesome
This game was what I had been hoping for a long time. I feel like I haven't been so invested in a video game universe since Fire Emblem Three Houses.
17:45 YOU CAN FIX THIS ON PC! I just beat the first main dungeon and I'm so mad didn't find this out sooner. If you're playing on a good pc, increase the rendering scale, double it if your pc can handle it. It makes everything look a billion times better
Looks like the Playstation wish list is getting another entry. You two sold me on this, splendid video as always!😄 Great finish by Egg!
I'm 60 hours into it. The easiest way to describe the game is that its basically a reskin of Persona 5 with Final Fantasy's Job system, a touch of Berserk, and a splash of Attack on Titan.
I found this useful.
Is that... Good?
@@LivingGuy484yes it’s very very good. Im also 70 hours into it, probably around halfway through based on the calendar and I’m loving it. Also the berserk influences are CRAZY in this game. Also much of the themes/art are European renaissance/enlightenment based.
@@MonsterhunterFTWWTF 70 hrs and halfway? Where are you plot wise?
And the racism of Valkyria Chronicles? 😅
The most noticeable instance is a scene in Brilehaven where Gallica basically just says:
"Yeah, I'm here too."
*RANK UP!*
A new video, we are blessed! And now I unfortunately have to pause it and play/finish Metaphor first before coming back, this is a game I wanna experience as blind as possible. X)
Have some food for the algorithm!
Holy hell its been years since you've popped in my feed.
Im glad you guys mentioned the narration ive been loving it since the demo. Give a valkyria chronicles sort of feel.
3:28 JESUS!!! ... fuck, don't go for my jugular like that, omg
This game looks alright, but I REALLY got excited when you mentioned "sword surfing". Yes PLEASE.
2 Videos on all the games I've loved this year from ButtersBuns is truly peak
I didn't even think about this. I should have because you love Atlus but getting this game and your video on top of it is the icing on the cake ❤❤❤❤
Atlus: We liked your music in Persona 5. Whatchu gonna do about Refantazio?
Shoji Meguro: Buddhist monk rapping in Esperanto.
Atlus: What?
Meguro: Did I fucking stutter?
My only fear is that Atlus will definitely launch an enriched version and I'll feel frustrated if I buy this one right now 😭
I feel you but that is always the risk with a good Altus game. 😂
The novel is not based on our reality or even our utiopia. It is based on a book called utopia from 1512. And since ideas constantly evolve and change it is not really a vision anyone has nowadays.
I like butters explanation better
@@majinmobb But it's just wrong.
The best way I have come to describe this game is "What if Persona 5 actually stuck the landing?", because it was able to do the revolutionary spirit and societal consciousness stuff without contradicting itself or falling on a bunch of rakes.
I kinda love how Atlus itself is giving us more Buns for the sake of it
The algorithm kept this from me for 4 days?! Heresy.
The wifey killed it; loved hearing Buns’ “voice” still stay consistent even when she took V.O. duty.
Woop woop!
Glad to see someone else recognize the DDS DNA in Metaphore!
Im glad we are getting more Buns videos. The world is healing. It would be nice if we got a For beginners video but one step at a time
Everything about this game I found absolutely perfect...except the dungeons.
The Garden of Earthy Delights/Bosch art references of the boss monsters caught me off guard and made the Art History nerd part of my brain happy.
Mage Strohl isn’t real. Mage Strohl can't hurt you.
Mage Strohl just means you get to play more Metaphor
Just finished my first playthrough. Mah boy Heismay. That is all I will say.
I don't know about anyone else but I am greatly enjoying this game.
