G'day Anthony, just last week changed the front diff oil on my 2011 hilux. With the filler plug i put a ring spanner on a hex bit with a piece of pipe over the spanner as a breaker bar, no problem to get off. Different story with drain plug, used hex bit on 1/2inch drive breaker bar could not get off without stripping plug. So jumped online and ordered Kaon tool which arrived next day to Keilor East (great service from Kaon). Made the job very easy. Thanks for the videos!

Those front diff plugs are made of cheese, the Kaon tool is the best

Great detail , step by step. Professional and spot on with tool selection and methods. Like the fact that its realistic problem solving. The "kaon" socket tool is a precise bit of gear.( that was a valuable bit of advice) they also sell the 24mm plug set.
    🙂

Prado 95 series is also a pain in the arse to get to fill plug. Your videos have helped me to change out oil in my 80 series AND my Prado diffs.

Just going to drop the oil in the front diff on my Hilux KUN26R SR5 2013. I'm glad to see that you have a video on how to? Great stuff! 👍

Hard to find good videos like this. Usually, how-to videos don't cover how-to-deal with molested parts. Loved it, might just be the accent being from the good old US of A

Not as bad as the front diff on an Amarok. 8mm hex plug with about 10mm clearance between fill plug and diff cradle. I had to cut down about 10mm of my 8mm Allen key and weld it to an 8mm ring spanner to get in there.

Thank you, that's the drain plug. How about the top plug for refilling. I see that it's hard to get to the top plug. Please how do l go about it?

Thanks . Anthony. I live i trinidad and have a hilux 2.5. 2kd. I carried it to the toyota dealer to change the rear diff , transfer case and front diff oil. Their labor cost was really expensive. I would like to do it myself next time. I would love to know what type of oil to buy and how much i would need. Thanks.

Hey I am from Trinidad as well, the owners manual recommended a GL5 75w85 gear oil, I was using the Castrol syntrax limited slip 75w90 (full synthetic)(price went from TT$135 to 200 per quart recently) so in my last gear oil change I switched to Mobil 1 fully synthetic gear oil 75w90(TT$100 per quart) switched because of price

Just get a Lexus style drain plug with an external 14mm head. The Allen design is trash. I do agree any good mechanic won’t have an issue with said design, but lube techs love to strip these! GREAT instruction on removing the old one!

Hi, can you DIY this? I’ve done rear diff & transfer case, but it looks like you’d have trouble here without lifting it.

Hi Anthony, after loosening the diff bolts and using a bar to bring it back, how do you get it back to the original position? Apologies for causing any frustration if it’s a simple answer. I’m not experienced mate. Thanks

Hi. Have you done any anticor underneath of your Prado? Or any other Prado? Is it necessary to do, or no need for that? Corrosion on Prado is very common problem

Which hole should the oil be drained from? The top or bottom one?
And how do I check if I need to change my diff oil? Can I loosen the top nut and check it any oil coles out?

    • @jdg5682
      @jdg5682 2 года назад

Drain it from the top hole by blowing air into the bottom one to overcome gravity

Came here to see how to remove difficult top filler plug…….but no. Instead I wasted 11:20 minutes see how to do a job that I did in a couple of minutes. Maybe it was just put in the too hard basket.
