Terry you used 75W 85 in the Transfer case instead of 75W 90 I wouldn’t think it would matter at all. Had you not been in lockdown at the time would you normally use the 90 ? 🥃🥃
@@JafffaAdventures That would be a yes Terry, now that I have relocated into the countryside, the approach of me doing it rather than someone else is more likely going to be the norm. The one thing i have also been investigating is hoist, but they may have to wait for a while :)
As usual a great informative video, you should be proud of yourself mate, keep up the great work. I can't help but noticing old mate in the background waiting to be finished ;)
Thanks Greg, you are very kind and I really appreciate you taking the time to share. I have not touched the old girl for over a month given my recent Cape trip but I definitely need to take care of the 200 post trip before I move onto her. Thanks for watching mate 😎👍
Hi Terry. Just grab yourself an old compass for camping and hold it up to the front diff. If there is a magnet in there the compass should easily find it. 😉 PS. It looks like you’ve done a boot going into the front diff.
Cheers Terry. Another great informative video. Between you and Jamie we have the 200 maintenence covered. Looking forward to brake fluid change tutorial with the toyota tech plug in the obd port and laptop (hint hint) Cheers Eric.
Thanks Eric, I agree Jamie has excellent information on the 200 series. I still have the fluid change on the list and in fact I recently purchased all new pads and rotors so that will be rolled into the video as well. Thanks for watching mate, I sincerely appreciate it 😎👍
Terry your an absolute legend. I’ve been looking for a decent pump to change diffs/gearbox and transfer fluids for awhile now. Now I’ve just ordered the same pump you have. Keep the content coming and thanks👍
Thank you Robert, you are very kind and I am humbled that you found the video useful. The pumps are magic and bloody cheap for what they are. In true Terry fashion, I did modify the pump when I got it. It had alligator clips on it and I cut them off and replaced them with an Andersen plug. Now it just plugs into a spare port I have on my aux battery, simples☺️👍
Thanks for you kind words David, I sincerely appreciate it. Also, great idea re the garden sprayer, thanks for sharing that mate. Keep the shiny side up David😎👍
Nice one Frank. No doubt there are Dewalt or Milwaukee or other super brand devotees out there that look down their nose at me. However, being just a backyard hack I’ve never needed anything more than the Ryobi stuff, it’s never let me down....and I got them all from Bunnings😉😎👍
Good vid terry, just changed the same at 50k on the clock as factory serviced in the past no idea if changed at 20K and all was very brown as well, thought it must have been through towing.
Thank you Scott, I appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. I’m always suss about those types of things and doing it yourself removes any doubt. I’m glad you have taken over the torch my friend. Cheers😎👍
Thanks Vic, that’s very kind of you to say. There is a whole host of 200 series maintenance videos in the library if you want to tackle more on your own. I got the oil transfer pump off eBay, was around $33 bucks from memory. Just search “12V Portable Electric Oil Fluid Suction Pump” or similar and you will get heaps of hits. Cheers👍😎
Hi, I love your videos and how easy they are to follow. I have a question regarding the 12v pump, what is the best method to clean the pump for the next fluid you use?
Good question mate. I leave the prior fluid in it when I pack it away and the next time I use it I flush a litre or so of the old fluid that I am replacing through it. For example, if the last time I used it was for ATF, and I’m doing diff fluid next, I will drain the old diff fluid and flush a litre of the old fluid through the pump before using it for the new diff fluid. Cheers👍😎
Another informative video well done .. no crap the wife through :) For interest what height is your shed wall ... to get the lift in ? Thanks again tom
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment Hans, I sincerely appreciate it. I will definitely be doing a brake fluid swap. I have new rotors and pads on order and will do it when I change them over. Cheers😎👍
How long have you run 75w85 in your transfer case, have you had any issues? I’ve always used genuine oil because there doesn’t seem to be any aftermarket oil that is the proper specification. Would be good if this works to save getting the genuine stuff.
Is it fine if I used 85w90 or should stick with what the manual says because by mistake I just changed it and don’t know If should change it again a little help please it would a lot to me thank u
Mate, I have run 85w90 before without any problems whatsoever so I suspect you will not have a problem. The heavier weight lubricants are better in warmer climates or extreme driving conditions, but fair fine in everyday driving situations. The important part is the GL category. GL5 is specified and I would stick with that. GL4 has half the amount of extreme pressure additives. If your 85w90 is a GL5 your are good, if it’s a GL4 or lower I would dump it. Cheers👍😎
@@JafffaAdventures thank you you helped me a lot my local garage just changed all the fluid on the car but is it common that if I changed the transfer oil the 4LO would come out because I have right now I tried switch off the car multiple time and didn’t work out
Don't know how much of a lift you have but the inner CV boot looks like it might be wearing a groove into the the last fold from friction contact with its neighbor. It could just be a clean spot but Toyota CVs don't like high angles on the inner CV boot much and can wear through where the contact is being made.
Thanks for pointing that out mate, I went out to the shed and double checked. It is just a clean spot, no wear in the boot at all. I installed a diff drop kit when I put my 2” lift in to bring those CV angles back where they should be so it would have surprised me if there was actual wear on the boot. Again, thanks for pointing that out mate, had it been an issue you could have saved my bacon as I’m sure it would have let go in the middle of nowhere. Good thing a carry a spare CV in my spares kit. Have an amazing week mate, cheers 😎👍
@@JafffaAdventures No worries. I wound up with too little lift from an OME lift on a Tacoma in the states. I went with the next coil size up and would up with too much. Since they were not adjustable and I have unlocking hubs I decided to run it to see if the springs settled. But even with a dropped diff it didn't take much for what looked like a shiny spot to become a groove. Then the groove failed on brand new Toyota OEM CVs I paid a fortune for. Not a fun time rebooting them and I have since gone with coilovers to dial the height down and higher angle boots as a precaution. But that few seconds of video made the spot look shiny enough to freak me out lol.
Toyota engineers took the day off when deciding on the front diff fill and drain plugs. Why would they not use the same 24mm plugs as the rear diff and T-case?! And when attempting to get adequate leverage under a rig that is not on a lift, jack or ramps is next to impossible. Fortunately one can pump it out the fill hole, but it weighs heavy on my Land Cruiser-loving soul that the drain plug is stuck for another 20 or 30,000 miles…
In addition to the mechanical info and advice shared, yre also a naturally gifted tutor... thanks for the help.
