I had similar service from ARB over an air compressor that melted a cable, they took the compressor and did a full refresh rebuild for free, 5 years after I bought it, and included any updated parts, I still have the compressor over 10 years old now. Still going strong.
I knew you would stay on the high road Terry, but hats off to ARB for backing their (7 year old) product in - no questions asked. That goes a long way to keeping repeat customers in the house and bringing new ones to the party.
Great approach to marketing by ARB, but Terry, why did it fail? You can’t just say it was old …. Ultimately there was “a mechanism of failure”…..when it broke, why did break? What limits repeated over extension of the strut? Is there/ should there be something to limit repeated over extension of the strut other than banging metal to metal at the end of the suspensions travel? Ps. I suspect there was nothing faulty in the manufacture or design of the shock absorber itself.
I bought a jeep with an arb awning attached. ARB awning fell off the roof rack. Right off its rivets and not from the mount. This was in central america. ARB worked with a local rep to get it replaced and installed. I couldnt prove purchase being a second hand owner. Grateful for their support.
Fiendly pro-tip for you next time, you only need to undo the two lower ball joint bolts and sway bar link, and crack the camber/caster adjuster NUTS, so the lower control arm simply swings down and out of the way. This allows every strut assembly to slide in and out without having to undo anything else, other than the brake hose and abs attament bolts. I've seen a few of the BP51 lower Strut failures now. Mmm. Awesome video as always
I chose BP51s for my new Hilux build. A noob to this world, my choice was based on convenience (and ARB/OME rep). The Ute is yet to take the first trip it was built for, but videos like this give me confidence in the product. Thanks mate
Once again great tech video terry. I really enjoy watching your content. It’s great to have the knowledge to do these sort of repairs not only for myself but also for anyone I meet on the track that need help. It’s also great to see ARB standing by there product. My 200 has many ARB products fitted. All without any issues. Can’t wait for your next video.
Wow what customer service by ARB! They literally stand by their product even though you exceeded the warranty coverage 👏 i just installed these about 200 miles ago and when I first saw the video thumbnail I had some serious concern but after seeing how long you had them on and the mileage I felt better about them and the icing on the cake how ARB handle it. Thanks for the video 🍻
Thank you for a great video and hats off to you for your morals! I have a new Everest arriving in Jan, my plan was to get I ready for some off roading. With this video I am 100% sure that ARB will be my primary choice of supplier of parts! So, hats off to ARB as well.
Great and honest update Terry, I have also found ARB to be very accommodating , after all there products are meant to be used, great to see awesome customer service. Keep up the great content. PS I wish I to had a hoist.
I had a top control arm failure. The nut came lose & the suspension let loose & ripped a Buch of pipes off the engine on my 300 series on Stockton beach. I made it off the beach & into the dunes before it completely died. I had the vehicle recovered from the dunes & dropped off at my Sydney ARB dealer. They repaired the car including having everything checked by Toyota & paid the considerable recovery costs. I was a bit pissed that the thing failed but I cant fault ARB for their customer service in rectifying the problems. I have since had a base rack & rear bar fitted by ARB. I will continue to use them.
Great that they replaced them! In South Africa Ive snapped 2 rear OME shocks on my Defender on separate occasions and customer service left a lot to be desired from agent.
Thanks for another great video Terry, so helpful when working on the big girl, reassuring to see a job done before us newbies roll around in the dirty bits
Really glad racq looked after you as well as ARB seeing that you took off for a break. Good to see good things coming to good people, buddy! Keen to see the back ones go in 👍
Terry, ARB is definitely one of the good ones. Another company that is customer focused is Norweld. This is why I buy from these companies; yeah, sure you pay extra but look at the aftercare you get. Way better than some of these so called 4wd companies I've dealt with. BTW subscribed.
Thumbs up for integrity. Well said sir. Wouldn't mind having you as neighbour! I'll have a go at most mechanical jobs but need a friendly bit of advice when confronted by something new. Great episode thanks.
7 years, 150,000 kms of off roading in a shock, myself, they would be getting close to replacement anyway. Shock life is way over looked in vehicles. Bloody hell, a new set of shocks and springs, that’s awesome from ARB
Canadian accent but with Aussie slang = hillarious! SUBSCRIBED. Very nice workspace you have got. I'll peek your channel - I see some projects in the background.
Cheers Mick, been a citizen for 30 years now so bound to pick up the odd bit of slang😉. Many many projects on the channel mate, you might find something that tweaks your interest. Enjoy your stay mate😎👍
Im suprised ARB helped you. I called after a couple of years after my ascent canopy gas struts lost pressure. I was told nothing we can do, out of warranty.
Interesting video and awesome outcome, seems like ARB service is hit and miss. Had two warranty claims for ARB haven’t been great especially the second warranty claim for there tyre pressure sensor failed after 12 months Offroad. Denied the claim and got told that I broke it. Sadly has put me off ARB products if they want back there warrenty.
Interesting to hear that racq helped. I recently lost a wheel off the car, they refused to pay for a truck to take it 5 minutes into town because it wasn’t classed as an accident. Not on ultimate though. Guess I need to look into that
I've put my Bp51's through many a torcher test in vic high country, Flinders etc with my 200 series. All good after 50,000kms. An expensive option but it was the rep plus the nationwide network of stores why i decided to kit my cruiser out with arb products.
Had me going until you said 150k on them lol, totally a wear item at that point and was neglected till it failed absolutely. Especially with your self described flogging of the vehicle, I would be happy to get 150km on my Yotas shocks. Bilstein only says mine are good for 50,000 miles, I'm at 70 now and no noticeable difference. I wonder if the remote reservoir helped hide the main shock going bad and overheating/fatiguing quicker but the reservoir helped dappen the ride to the point it wasn't noticeable. Good knock on ARB for taking care of you regardless, great customer service in a time where that's hard to find.
I recently had almost identical problem but with Bilstein not ome. On a bt50 on the pdr up near Cape York. Was able to ratchet strap the strut straighter and ended up driving approx 650klms back to Atherton ( some corrugations some bitumen) Didn't have a broken cv though, just the abs / wheel speed sensor that I was able to solder back together and get back on the road. Had never heard of this happening before, and yet to reach out to manufacturer to see if they want feedback etc Great outcome from arb though!
I always disconnect the sway bar when I'm shooting for full droop. The shock on the other side, acting through the sway bar will limit how much droop you get on the the broken side.
I’ve always found ARB to be good when it comes to these kind of things. I broke the strap on my base rack gas bottle holder by forgetting to take it off the roof and hit the carport. Totally my fault. I went in to get a replacement but the strap isn’t sold separately. So they gave me the full kit for cost price.
I had same failure back around 2018. 200 series front with less than 30k km. Wife was driving picking kids up from school (just started driving and went over speed bump near the school). We had just returned from 18k km trip around WA from east coast. Appeared to be too small of a radius where the shock shaft ends at the bottom. Local dealer who fitted the kit was excellent and replaced all 4 shocks with new ones. Disappointing to see from a premium product. I wonder how many others there are
Should have bought Bilsteins. I have used them since the 70's in on road and off road vehicles and never had any sort of failure. I'm glad ARB came through for you because that is definitely a great tribute to their customer support.
You’re lucky getting them replaced by ARB. I’ve had a strut break on my hilux after 2 years. The strut didn’t have the stroke for the lift. (It bottomed the strut before it touched the bump stops) they basically told me to get lost. My parents snapped a front ARB strut on their 200 landcruiser and we didn’t bother. Both were lucky to not cause a crash. They break more often than you think. We live out of town and drive on dirt roads but it’s not exactly off road. It’s maintained rubble.
That was a great video. I have a 200 that had a front ARB BP51 spring collapse after only 1.5 years and about 20000 miles of mostly off-road abuse. ARB was not as quick to replace. It took about 3-4 emails and a phone conversation for them to finally replace them. I was a bit surprised at the push back being how new they were. Aside from that, I keep a spare CV with me, should I also carry a spare gasket kit? Thanks so much.
Cheers mate, it’s good to see you were looked after as well. I also carry a spare CV. To what gasket kit are you referring as you do not need any gaskets with a CV replacement. Cheers😎👍
G'day mate, great video. I am currently researching a 2" suspension lift with adjustable ride shock mainly to mitigate damage from corrugations as well as comfort and then adjust back to daily driver setting when back on bitumen. What were the reasons for choosing the BP51's, in terms of use case, shock type and brand? Thanks in advance for an information.
I loved the ride they deliver mate. I use the car mainly off road and it eats rough corrugations and the like up with ease. Believe it or not, the on road handling is much better than stock as well, it really is a great all around product. I do not change the settings for on and off road, just leave them where they are for both use cases. If I need extra weight carrying capacity like when I am fully loaded before a trip, I just pump up the air bags. That’s the reason I replaced them with the same again. Cheers👍😎
I had two sets of ARB Old Man Emu struts fail on my Tacoma and got free replacements after showing proof of failure. Yes they stand behind the product. I must add that the BP51 is a high-end shock and typically need to be serviced every so many km. Did you ever have them serviced?
@@JafffaAdventures I had some Fox 2.5s and they came with a little book, "Shocks need love too" which gives the service intervals depending on use. I don't have down time for that on a daily driver.
At least your wheel didn't fall off. We had an LBJ fail on the 90 and the whole wheel collapsed and went under the vehicle. RAC to the rescue for us too 😊
I had a set of lc200 rear shocks failed with only 18k on them Oil leaking out of the top banjo fitting. No warranty, and found out you can't get them rebuilt as ARB HQ does not even have a facility to rebuild them as yet.
I’ve heard of this failure happening a few times. I actually called ARB and asked if it was an issue as I have BP51. The response was “they’ve never heard of this happening before” clearly they can’t deny it now. Surly there has to be a safety recall!
ARB either need to increase the shock diameter size or avoid manufacturing stressed components with sharp corners. Stressed metal components do not like sharp corners., as Terry mentioned..
Great service from ARB, I’ve had similar, but I was hoping you’d Tello us what they actually said. Yes, you had a replacement, but did they discuss the failure at all?
I did not discuss it because they did not say anything at all. They simply stated that they are well out of warranty but here’s your replacements. Cheers😎👍
If your getting a wheel alignment and its at round ten twelve ortwo thats when they have breaks worst time cayse they go on break and forget all the time i double check they have tightened every thing at the shop that way its fixed straight away
Factory CV’s are quite strong and I have never broken one. I take the vehicle on some pretty extreme tracks and am very mindful of mechanical sympathy when wheeling. Twin lockers also allow me to crawl through most stuff, where open centres have to hit tricky bits with momentum 😎👍
Dear Terry, All this unfortunate situation aside; if you were buying again, would you get the same ARB shocks & springs or would you get for something different? I'm about to replace some OME shockies (not as fancy as those) and am wondering if these are a good option for my 200. My other option is to replace like for like as I'm not unhappy with my current ones (they are just worn). As I watch the end of the video, I see that you purchased replacement of the same type. Question still remains - is there any ARB shock absorber that you would rather go with if you were buying from scratch?? Thankyou
Yes mate, if I were forking out the coin for new suspension I would get the same. I’ve since done a month in Tassie and 3 weeks in the Flinders that have just reinforced my opinion. I really do rate this suspension 😎👍
G'day Terry ,that was some failure things could have ended much worse. Imagine a failure like that CSR? For sure, unradiused shoulders on heat treated components is never good, did the break look to show crystallisation ? That was a great result from ARB ,I was looking to upgrade my shocks on my LC200 to 51s, and it would be interesting know to know if this was an isolated incident.
Pity i didn't have a similar experience with my air locker. ARB couldn't pay me to take one of those POS diff centres. I went with electric lockers with my rebuild.
The bottom of these shocks have a spherical bearing that actually rotates with the movement of the suspension so it does not matter if the vehicle is on the ground or in the air. If your shock has a rubber bush, then yes.👍
@@JafffaAdventures ah gotcha. So what did arb say about the failure ? I would have tried to get them to pay for the whole lot. Warranty doesn’t mean much Has to be fit for purpose
ARB were silent on the failure, just said they would replace them. I got a $2000 set of suspension for nix after mine did 150,000km at 7 1/2 years old. That is a sensational outcome, and pushing for the rears is just having a lend in my opinion. They exceeded my expectations, and that is all I can ask. The reason I did not have ARB install it is trust. I do not trust ARB or ANY OTHER WORKSHOP to work on my vehicle. I spend a lot of time off grid, in very remote locations where I rely on my vehicle to get me back out again. If something goes wrong because of an installation issue, it's on me and me alone. I know my work, I trust my work, and I back myself, plain and simple. Cheers.
Like I said, pushing for more than what I already received does not sit well with my moral compass. You may disagree, but in my opinion they did more than enough👍
Strange I reached out to ARB for servicing and rebuild of my BP51 and was told because my shocks were built before 2018 I would have to purchase new equipment
Well ARB do charge Top Dollar for their Gear . And THAT particular failure is a " That's not s'posed ta happen..." failure . If they wish to maintain a " Best in the Business " profile , reactions like that are Essential . Almost mandatory .
@@JafffaAdventures zero contact unless I call. Ended up selling the car & didn’t bother telling them don’t worry about it ,…. Just to wait n see how long they take.
@@JafffaAdventures One would hope the RAA here in S.A. would have me covered like that! (it's interesting that for all these years of being self reliant, the year I broke down 6 hours from home, the kids bought me a "full" membership & I've continued it since)
big mistake the lower shock mount needs to tighten when car on ground it destroy the lower bush when raised and tightened the bush is designed to work in a certian rotation not lowerd in its natural ride height on the ground hope this helps with all rubber bushs
That’s incorrect with these style struts. The lower mount has a spherical bearing as the load point. It rotates in 360 degrees and swivels. The old rubber bush style needs to be tightened with the vehicle on the ground, not these 😎
150k and failure/ snapped shaft… good going not too sure that is good going. these are off road designed stocks. I doubt you would have seen anything like this if you had purchased a set of King shocks 150k ago. Not convinced these preform anywhere as good as they look
Disagree. They don’t know me from a bar of soap, never mentioned social media, just approached them in a rational and reasoned manner as a concerned customer. That counts for a lot.
I had similar service from ARB over an air compressor that melted a cable, they took the compressor and did a full refresh rebuild for free, 5 years after I bought it, and included any updated parts, I still have the compressor over 10 years old now. Still going strong.
Great story mate, thanks for sharing😎👍
That’s an awesome outcome from a pretty average situation. Great reason to continue to support Australian manufacturing.
Agree Shane, 100%😎👍
I thought they where made in Thailand? The older OMEs are Aussie made
Cool
I knew you would stay on the high road Terry, but hats off to ARB for backing their (7 year old) product in - no questions asked. That goes a long way to keeping repeat customers in the house and bringing new ones to the party.
Could not agree more mate. Cheers😎👍
I have lovells and they won't even cover a dead shock in warranty.
Is just 💩 ride like a boat in rear but they refuse to fix.
Shows the difference!
@ausguy4385 good to know, cheers mate😎👍
Great approach to marketing by ARB, but Terry, why did it fail? You can’t just say it was old …. Ultimately there was “a mechanism of failure”…..when it broke, why did break? What limits repeated over extension of the strut? Is there/ should there be something to limit repeated over extension of the strut other than banging metal to metal at the end of the suspensions travel? Ps. @chrisheap420 yes, excellent support. Any mechanism of failure is a guess
I bought a jeep with an arb awning attached. ARB awning fell off the roof rack. Right off its rivets and not from the mount. This was in central america. ARB worked with a local rep to get it replaced and installed. I couldnt prove purchase being a second hand owner. Grateful for their support.
That’s a great story William, thanks for sharing😎👍
was so close to buying the bp51, thanks heaps will steer well clear now, cheers mate!
All good👍
Terry, it’s great to hear first that you got out of the failure without any injuries, second that ARB backed up their products with a great effort.
Thanks Tom, I too was very pleased on both accounts. I appreciate you stoping by. Cheers👍😎

Thanks mate

I had two sets of ARB Old Man Emu struts fail on my Tacoma and got free replacements after showing proof of failure. Yes they stand behind the product. I must add that the BP51 is a high-end shock and typically need to be serviced every so many km. Did you ever have them serviced?
Good to hear of your positive experiences.
Never had my shocks serviced 😎👍
@@JafffaAdventures I had some Fox 2.5s and they came with a little book, "Shocks need love too" which gives the service intervals depending on use. I don't have down time for that on a daily driver.
Cheers😎👍
At least your wheel didn't fall off. We had an LBJ fail on the 90 and the whole wheel collapsed and went under the vehicle. RAC to the rescue for us too 😊
Wow, that would have been scary. Cheers 😎👍
I had a set of lc200 rear shocks failed with only 18k on them Oil leaking out of the top banjo fitting. No warranty, and found out you can't get them rebuilt as ARB HQ does not even have a facility to rebuild them as yet.
Well that is certainly less than ideal
I’ve heard of this failure happening a few times. I actually called ARB and asked if it was an issue as I have BP51. The response was “they’ve never heard of this happening before” clearly they can’t deny it now. Surly there has to be a safety recall!
Thanks for sharing👍
ARB either need to increase the shock diameter size or avoid manufacturing stressed components with sharp corners. Stressed metal components do not like sharp corners., as Terry mentioned..
That’s it mate😎👍
Terry,.... can you come to Melbourne and fix / service my 200 series.... Awesome vids mate
Cheers mate….and no🤣👍
Great service from ARB, I’ve had similar, but I was hoping you’d Tello us what they actually said. Yes, you had a replacement, but did they discuss the failure at all?
I did not discuss it because they did not say anything at all. They simply stated that they are well out of warranty but here’s your replacements. Cheers😎👍
@@JafffaAdventures Fair enough. I have a set which have done 120K - one slight leak. Might be time for a rebuild.
Not bad going mate😎👍
What pre-load are you running on each side for the spring.
Don’t know the actual n/mm or lb/inch measurement but the measured number of turns is detailed in the video
Great video Terry, did ABR give any feedback on how this failure point would be removed going forward?
No mate, they simply agreed it was a critical failure and replaced them. Cheers😎👍
ARB well done, that’s the way to run a business
I could not agree more mate😎👍
Did this happen on the way back from the Simpson with the bike trailer on the back? Geez, that could have ended pear shaped. Glad it didn't, stay safe
Sure did mate👍
If your getting a wheel alignment and its at round ten twelve ortwo thats when they have breaks worst time cayse they go on break and forget all the time i double check they have tightened every thing at the shop that way its fixed straight away
Cheers Richard😎
Why didn't you put in chrome moly cv's in as replacements.
Great video and good on ARB
Cheers James, I agree, great back up😎👍
what did you do to fix the spring where it was gouged?
I replaced the rims. This is covered in a future video. Cheers😎👍
600 kg load rated rear coils, what are the standard coil load rate in a 200? Thanks
Would not know mate, cheers😎👍
Love your style Terry ! :) (Re: blackmail and such)
Cheers mate, I appreciate that. Integrity is very important to me👍
G'day Terry ,that was some failure things could have ended much worse.
Not sure if this is isolated mate, but a great example of product support nonetheless 😎👍
Well done ARB!!!
Agree mate👍😎
Pity i didn't have a similar experience with my air locker. ARB couldn't pay me to take one of those POS diff centres. I went with electric lockers with my rebuild.
Pity indeed👍
Is the truck bump stopped properly for the extended travel shock? Just because they are longer does not mean they stop the uptravel earlier.
Yes
ARB knew who you were and that you have a following and were more than happy to replace them free of charge you didnt have to mention it. They knew 😝
Disagree, the channel is a minnow.
Good work ARB.
Agree 100%👍
Aren’t you suppose to tighten shock bottom bolt with weight on it so doesn’t wreck bush ?
Cheers.
@@JafffaAdventures no I meant getting them to pay for cv etc it’s their fault everything else got damaged
Like I said, pushing for more than what I already received does not sit well with my moral compass. You may disagree, but in my opinion they did more than enough👍
Wow, that’s what I call customer service!
Could not agree more mate😎👍
I've seen a few GVM upgrade struts snap the lower mount on brand new Ford Rangers. Definitely concerning.
👍
Yep, shout to RACQ......awsum every time.....🇦🇺😎
Indeed mate😎👍
I'm only 4 minutes into the video but in my opinion that spring is still under quite a bit of tension while disasembling...
No, as you can see I checked it before removing the tyre. It’s not my first rodeo👍😎
Thankyou for a great video.
No worries mate😎👍
Wow arb did something good 😊
Indeed👍
Strange I reached out to ARB for servicing and rebuild of my BP51 and was told because my shocks were built before 2018 I would have to purchase new equipment
Maybe I need to beat on my stuff until it breaks to see if they can help me
Yep, not sure what the root cause of a different response is, but many have had a similar experience to you, many similar to me👍😎
Not a fan of those shock seen to many failures but if they work for you enjoy was a good outcome
It was a good outcome that I was pleased with. Been to Tassie and the Flinders on the new gear and love it😎👍
@@JafffaAdventures glad it’s all working now your fillings in your teeth won’t fall out
Yep, all still in place😉
Well ARB do charge Top Dollar for their Gear . And THAT particular failure is a " That's not s'posed ta happen..." failure .
If they wish to maintain a " Best in the Business " profile , reactions like that are Essential . Almost mandatory .
They do indeed charge top dollar👍
Well.... Bugger me! I wasn't expecting them to send you replacement 😯😯How did your rim fair Terry?
Was a bit scared on the inside but certainly ok. I have since replaced as I wanted a different look which is in a future video 😎👍
@@JafffaAdventures Oh no! More upgrades 😂👍
You know it😉
Very good service but why the failure? Snapping a a 4wd shock absorber as you did doesn't happen very often.
Time, abuse, design. I’d suggest a combination of them all.
@@JafffaAdventures You have forgotten the act of God... BTW I like your videos.
Cheers👍
Still waiting on my warranty seat cover from 1.5 years ago from ARB.
That does not sound good…
@@JafffaAdventures zero contact unless I call. Ended up selling the car & didn’t bother telling them don’t worry about it ,…. Just to wait n see how long they take.
I must be going to the wrong ARB store I had three failures on new equipment and was shown the door absolutely no customer service backup
That’s not good at all😔
@@JafffaAdventures after sliding $10K across the counter for various items on a build you expect some backup
I agree mate👍😎
This'll be interesting!
It was very much above my expectations 😎👍
@@JafffaAdventures One would hope the RAA here in S.A. would have me covered like that! (it's interesting that for all these years of being self reliant, the year I broke down 6 hours from home, the kids bought me a "full" membership & I've continued it since)
Good stuff mate, I trust you will not have to use it to find out😎👍
big mistake the lower shock mount needs to tighten when car on ground it destroy the lower bush when raised and tightened the bush is designed to work in a certian rotation not lowerd in its natural ride height on the ground hope this helps with all rubber bushs
That’s incorrect with these style struts. The lower mount has a spherical bearing as the load point. It rotates in 360 degrees and swivels. The old rubber bush style needs to be tightened with the vehicle on the ground, not these 😎
@@JafffaAdventures another social media mechanic wanna be put in his place.... Lol🤦
Thanks for the support👍
Shocking 😲
Groan😂
So what did ARB say about the failure?
ARB were silent on the failure. Cheers
Cheaper than court case ✅
That’s not how I roll, but they would not know that 😎👍
Glad i saw this video, i guess ill be going with bilsteins instead
Ok
150k and failure/ snapped shaft… good going not too sure that is good going. these are off road designed stocks.
I doubt you would have seen anything like this if you had purchased a set of King shocks 150k ago.
Not convinced these preform anywhere as good as they look
Ok
ARB wouldn't be sending out replacement parts, to most people, so definitely a PR move.
Disagree. They don’t know me from a bar of soap, never mentioned social media, just approached them in a rational and reasoned manner as a concerned customer. That counts for a lot.
Oh man, those shocks are too pretty to get sh!tty. Engineering works of art.
Lol
