I'm a retired Outpost Nurse, Dave. I worked in remote parts of northern Canada where there were no resident physicians.
I love your videos. This one, like your others, is solid! Good, sensible, grounded information and recommendations. Same with your set of books. I use your info to improve my EDC on my person, in my vehicle, and my home.
Keep up the good work, Dave. And, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours, too.

In addition to being a life-long lover of the outdoors, Im a long-serving Paramedic. Needless to say I have a wealth of knowledge in this field. However it is always good to see other professionals' methods for prioritising needs and catering for each one.
I really like the 10 C's, 5 B's and 5 H's system. I find it logical, easily remembered, and consequently, I adopted it soon after I found your channel.
It has admirably stood the test of time.

    "Canterbury" - The 11th C.
The FAK in my old man's work truck was electrical tape or duct tape, a bottle of alcohol or peroxide and a handkerchief. Whatever you couldn't fix with that, we still had the truck to take you to the hospital. But most injuries on the site were cuts, bruises, never had breaks but we came close, sprains and falls. And gosh help you if you didn't need to go to the hospital because you were getting right back on that roof to keep working. My old man's diagnosis was, "Are you going to die? No? Then get back to work." 😂

I am a Safety Professional, and I must say that Dave is one of very special people that I have noticed on internet. He can explain things in such an easy way its just pleasure to listen. In Occupational HSE there is no improvisation alowed, but in a real daily scenarios of ordinary people this is perfect plan to exicute. Thanks once again.

When I was a kid, my dad taught me improvised devices, an improvised tourniquet being one of them. You take off your belt - which is already guaranteed to be longer than your leg is round. You put the belt around your leg and through the buckle, then cinch it down over the buckle back over itself. You then take your leather punch from your Scout knife, and punch a hole into the belt so you can get the buckle prong through it, and that will keep it tight while freeing your hands for other things. As prep, he had me apply my belt to the correct tightness, punch the hole, then immediately undo the belt so as not to damage my limb. This way, I already have the hole punched where it needs to be, assuming I maintain my weight.
Another great improvised device he taught me when he bought me a canoe (which I had for about 20 years, and wish I could have brought it with me when I moved), is the improvised life jacket. That's the one where you remove your pants, tie the cuffs, and then trap the air. I used that one once when I got knocked off a sailboat by someone not looking where they were going while I was tending to the rigging.
There's so much cool stuff you can make in a short amount of time. Real MacGyver stuff.

I've been in ems for 30 years, and an Illinois paramedic for the past 7 years. It would be an honor to serve you, and your school in that area. Just putting that out there.

So many times I've been told i need an IFAK. So many times I've told them that I'm wearing mine. I've been doing first aid courses since I was a Cub Scout; n I just turned 50. I've renewed my ticket every 3yrs since. The last one I helped teach. And she was the only one that agreed that all these IFAKs are just someone realizing they could sell the enedcucated masses something. Thank you for sharing this. When my brother introduced me to Shawn, who led me to you, I first heard about the 10Cs I laughed. Other than a compass, I carry that list everyday since I was 15. As a truck driver, I'm rarely far from a road. But I usually have at least one in my truck. When I go out camping, I carry at least 2. Excellent episode, thank you sir!

I am a veteran critical care Paramedic from the west Texas badlands, as well as an active teacher of emergency medicine, and also experienced and practicing outdoorsman and hunter. over many years, I've found out the hard way there is no such thing as too much information or too much practical knowledge of some subject, particularly when it comes to knowledge that will keep you or someone else alive.....thats why its always referred to as practicing medicine.

😢I want to compliment you on this video! Yes, totally agree that this is a springboard video that makes the viewer "think" about the 10c's in an nontraditional way. I found myself thinking up other first aid uses as you were talking. But I also appreciate putting bleeding and hypersensivity (allergic reaction) at opposite ends of the talking points. I totally agree that control of bleeding is the most serious condition with the best chance of survival with proper training. Whereas allergic reactions are way outside of any reasonable degree of wilderness first aid training without an Epi pen. Great topic and presentation!

I burnt myself at camp in U.P. of MI. Hours from any medical services. And didn't make sure my ifak had burn supplies. The hinges broke on my horizontal barrel grille. So was lifting the lid off of it knocked boiling water on my leg. You can do 10000 things safely the one you don't can be that injury. I should have epipen. I have honey bee's and bumble bees allergic to both. A sting in neck or tongue could be life threatening. We use mason jars with lids because lots of bees. I run a chainsaw. Why would I not have safety gear. Chaps and lv 3 ballistic jacket. You can also shim your insoles with padding. Doing a lot of walking can wear insoles. My work shoes I had to put some card board under my heels. This is one of your best videos. Gonna rewatch it for sure. I do marine services as side work spring and fall. It don't take much to get cold in water. I gotta take cpr first aid every so many years for captains license.

I'm not a huge hunter, trapper, bushcrafter type (I can hold my own in the woods or foothills though), but I do tend to like hiking and recreating in the local foothills and boondocking in the local national forests in the mountains. Los Angeles is home to the biggest urban national park in the world (the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area). I always tell folks who ask me questions about how they can do outdoor recreation things better that the two things I always say are worth knowing for everyone are a basic Land Navigation course to learn how to properly use a compass and topo maps, and an expanded Backcountry First Aid course. You're the Pathfinder School, and if someone can get to the Pathfinder School or another similar fabulous school like the Pathfinder School to take those courses? Great, fantastic, DO THAT! But a lot of folks enjoy going outside but live further away in cities or suburbs. I'm sure we have schools like what you have, but they are going to be several hours drive away to get there. An option I would not sleep on is to also look into what your local REI offers for those two courses. I know for a fact that regionally, we have both options. Do I think the REI course will have a slightly different format than you would get at a school like Pathfinder? Yes, but I also think the basic information is going to be the same and help keep you safer outdoors. Not sure how many people who follow this channel cross pollinate with folks who get outdoor gear at REI, but it's a good resource and closer to home in certain parts of the country.

Good info, thank you sir! The info you provide covering multi purpose items is very helpful…as long as the individual is trained to do so. Anyone can plan on carrying every possibly specialized piece of equipment but that can turn into a combined liability due to the extra weight and 200 things you have to dig through when time is paramount. Learn/pre plan/train, and repeat seem to be the rules of anyone that has the potential to reach the next or higher lvl of self reliance…granted that can take a degree of determination/perseverance/time to achieve but the basics at least will ensure you and yours have a better chance of thriving preferably or just surviving if things have gotten that bad. Thanks again for the advice!

It isn't necessarily on the same level as an Epi Pen, but if you carry some Benadryl with you, it can help with unforseen allergic reactions that are not life threatening. Mosquitoes think I'm tasty. I've never had a life-threatening reaction to mosquito bites, but I have occasionally found myself in a situation where I had no anticipated encounter of mosquitos but something happened and I got bit up. I've had instances where I've had a non life-threatening reaction to a spider bite. I've had non life threatening contact allergies with plants. None of these things are going to kill me, but it's going to be a lot harder to get out to go deal with the larger issue if my skin is on fire and clothing touching it makes me want to scream. Having a little Benadryl around can help calm things down enough to get back out of the woods. No medical advice, but Benadryl is also one of the things they give you at the ER when you have severe anaphylaxis. If you have an Epi Pen because you know you need one, it's worth talking to your doctor to try and figure out what is safe to buy you time in addition to using the Epi Pens with respect to Benadryl in a backcountry emergency situation. It's like aspirin for a heart attack, it might not solve the problem but it can be a possible additional resource to help buy time and not make things worse when administered appropriately.

Excellent video!! Very well explained! You did a bang up job there. As to food, you can do it with the things in the 10 C's as well...cordage, cutting tool ( knife, saw), and combustion (a way to make a fire for cooking. If you need self defense because you're being chased by the bad guys, well, again the 10 C's can come into play if you haven't brought a fire arm and ammo...all depends on ones situation. I think the complainers haven't fully thought out there complaints where 10 C's are concerned. Perhaps they don't fully understand the usefulness of them and there applications in various circumstances. I perhaps they should educate themselves a bit more before complaining about something tried and true. Yes?

just on water sources. im an old Aussie now grew up on a farm. used to go swimming in the muddy water of our damn the cows drank from. used to drink water from creeks after long bike rides with my mates. even drank from a puddle a few times after the rain so long as it wasnt stirred up and was clear. are any of these great things to do for a long time maybe not depends on where you are and the source of the creek.
main point though people dont let their kids get dirty now days. never had food poisoning myself or any parasites i know of. did get worms once from primary school thats just something you get i think at one point in life. but i am pretty sure being exposed to a few germs as a kid when i was healthy and fit has also carried over into older age. you immune system needs to be challenged every now and then to get the immunities your body then holds onto.
dont spray down your house with chemicals, let your kids play in the mud every now and then, humans while fragile compared to some animals still quite tuff. without exposure your kids wont get the antibodies to some of the most basic of germs.
that said vaccines are a thing to be trusted, got shot full of all of them going to singapore to live while my dad was in Nam and never had a problem from any. its also why things our grandparents generation died of are a thing of the past.

Any hemorrage not amenable to a conventional windlass TQ because of small size will be managed by direct pressure, because of low arterial pressure. Improvised tourniquets are not fast enough, not intuitive enough for low-frequency high-acuity emergency situations like major hemorrage, and have abysmal success rates in application, as well as hard-to-find materials (materials that are 1"+ thick, easily tieable, and thin, long, strong enough for a windlass sticks are quite rare) unless you carry them in, in which case you should've carried a TQ instead.
As for the 10C's and medical, of course having the 10C's helps in medical situations, but the 10C's are meant to cover survival needs, not medical needs. People saying an IFAK is missing from the 10C's is missing the point of the 10C's, IMO.
