Fun fact is that every time Jack Nicholson won Oscar, main actress also won Oscar. Louise Fletcher in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Shirley MacLaine in Terms of Endearment and Helen Hunt in As Good as It Gets.
Charlie Harrison All I know is Jack can carry a bad movie and make others around him better. I guess the entertainment industry wanted to make history as Helen Hunt also won an Emmy the same year for a show I never watched.
I'm glad that Kate Winslet didn't win that year. She improved so much and delivered so many great performances after that while Helen Hunt practically disappeared.

Helen Hunt, her character was more complex. She was the complete opposite of Nicholson's flamboyant-in your face performance. Her nuances, underplaying, made the character very real, very fresh.
Kate Winslet is one of my favorite actresses of all time! its unconditional, But to say that she was robbed that evening is untrue, her role as Rose in Titanic was hardly and acedemy award winning performance....

Titanics Biggest Fan EVER!!! Not Jennifer Lopez for Selena, but id say Kate was better then all that were nominated. Jennifer should have been nominated and won. She played Selena in the movie Selena. If you don't know who Selena is well then I'll tell you, she was a Mexican American singer who got shot and killed by her fan club manager when she was about to release her English album, before it was only in spanish. I'm not trying to be rude but Jennifer deserved it more then anyone. I'd give kate second place
The Academy got this absolutely spot on! I love Kate Winslet's acting and she's done some phenomenal work since...but, the facts of the matter are: Titanic was a great film with GOOD acting, As Good As It Gets was a good film with GREAT acting! The Oscars went to the rightful recipients in my mind.
She had a good night, winning the Oscar and having that hot man Hank Azaria sitting in the audience with her. I never saw "As Good as it Gets", but it must have been good if she and Jack Nicholson won the Academy Award for it. But I love "Titanic" and Kate Winslet probably should have won the Oscar.
Why does Kate Winslet deserve it for Titanic? Because it made so much money? She was great, hence the Oscar nom., but I really think Helen deserved this one. By the way this was an amazing pack of actresses that were nominated.
In retrospect, although As Good as it Gets was an very likeable and entertaining film, in this category it's hard to fault Helena Bonham Carter's performance as Kate Croy in The Wings of a Dove. A really difficult part that could so easily descend into villainy, yet she evokes vulnerability and fear throughout. A standout performance that disproves the sceptics who say she merely rides on the coat tails of Tim Burton.
Anyone who says Helen Hunt deserved this award or thinks Kate Winslet was robbed obviously did not see Mrs Brown.Judi Dench had the best acting performance across all categories that year. She should have won
· Best performance in that category? Judi Dench in 'Mrs. Brown'. · Most iconic role/performance of the year? Kate Winslet in 'Titanic'. · Winning actress of the night? The most familiar face ('Mad About You', 'Twister') for American voters back then. 23 years later, both Kate Winslet and Judi Dench are arguably acting royalty (and Winslet's still in her forties), whereas Helen Hunt was just lucky enough to be the most popular actress in a group of unknown foreigners, newcomers and past winners. 'As Good As It Gets' was a good movie, though. But the truth is most people even have a hard time remembering that Helen Hunt was awarded an Oscar for it.
This is such an important movie, I’ve seen it countless times, I love it so much. And I was so young and I had asthma like her son in the movie has and I used to ask my mom why isn’t her son being taken care of because I live in a country with universal health care and it was so weird to me starting to figure how things work in the US. And the mental health issues portrayed by the marvelous Jack Nicholson and how proper treatment, friendship, love and empathy can make such a difference making people with mental health issues part of the society and not segregated to their own solitude. And the homophobia issue so well represented by Greg Kinear with his brilliant performance… this is such an important movie. I was so glad I saw it when I was young. Art truly educates people and movies like this should be seen and praised, thank you Jim Brooks.
I LOVE As Good as it Gets... but it's so weird to pit Titanic and As Good as it Gets against eachother. Just too different. Very different performances and I find it hard to select a winner when it's too difficult to compare.
If I were helen hunt i would go on stage take the oscar and then walk over to kate winslet and give it to her and tell her " i dont know what the academy was thinking because your suposed to have this!" because she deserved it. Titantic was a preformance of a lifetime for her and titanic will still be one of the most loved movies of all time. I don't see as good as it gets getting rerealsed into theaters 15 years later!!!!
You are so dumb. Best Picture and Best Actress are different awards. Anyways Titanic is probably the most overrated movie of all time. The only good thing about was Celine's song. The dialogue in particular was abysmal.
Kate was robbed big time. She absolutely nailed the character of Rose Dewitt Bukater. I think the academy saw it as Kate was only 1 movie old at that time & was a fresh face with so much to prove later on & Kate actually have a magnificent career if you look at it with 1 Oscar, 5 Golden globes, 2 Emmys, 1 Grammy, 3 Baftas and many many more..
This was not at all a deserved win. It's arguably the worst win in this category. Judi Dench was miles better than any of those nominees'. She should have won. Helen basically said it herself.
You are 100% correct. That was the only way to correct the Academy mistake! I just watched that Ving Rhames tape the other day. Its just so touching and more so now as Lemmon is dead! Rhames exhibited unbelievable class and showmanship and was worthy of the award when he won unlike Ms. Hunt.
While everyone else is busy debating the results of the world's most well-known opinion poll, I am going to take the time to comment on this gorgeously respectable and emotional speech Ms. Hunt gave that night. Killer!!!!!
0:30 I love the look Helena exchanges with her mother ❤ Her mum looks so proud..She should have won, but the Academy Awards are biased in favour of yanka.
I think the reasoning here, towards why Helen Hunt won Best Actress that year, was due to the fact that the remaining four nominees here were all British. She was the sole American here. It's the same reasoning that led to Marisa Tomei winning in 1992!
i agree with helen and jack over kate and leonardo . . . titanic won every category except in the acting categories which said a lot . . . kate and leonardo were young and have grown since then . . . he was awesome in the aviator and she was awesome in many films afterwards especially revolutionary road
Judi Dench or Bonham Carter should have won this one by far. Although I don't think Helen should have won this one, people are overrating Winslet's performance in Titanic way too much. It's a miracle she was even nominated for such a basic performance. If anything, Helena should have won this one. She is probably never gonna get nominated anytime soon.
Best Actress: Helena Bonham Carter, "The Wings Of The Dove" Judi Dench, "Mrs. Brown" Pam Grier, "Jackie Brown" Helen Hunt, "As Good As It Gets"*(WINNER) Kate Winslet, "Titanic"
well it was important to her to win i guess so i would never dream of asking her to give it up, but i do think kate should have won. i mean her role is just that memorable. what the crap was helen hunt's character's name? i just call her waitress.
I adore Kate, I love Titanic and I think we can all agree Rose will forever be her life-defining role. But I'm ok with her not winning that night, because as much as I love the movie and character, it wasn't exactly Oscar-worthy material. However I still don't think Helen deserved to win either. It should have gone to either Helena or Judi.
The award should have been for the best here. Helent Hunt was not the best and was not even the second best! Kate Winslet was amazing in Titanic, there are many scenes which she didnt have any dialogue but just one look at her face and you know what a terrific performance she put in. The jury made a huge mistake here similar to when they awarded Julia Roberts instead of Ellen Burstyn for Requiem for a Dream
my thought is that she was STUNNING in As good as it gets, even if other nominees were good too. I understand everyone who says that Carter or Dench deserved the award 'cause they were amazing too, not for who's says Winslet... I'm a great fan of her and honestly, this was the less significant performance of her carreer. And if you watched other movies in which she starred, you know what I mean. Titanic was a great movie thanks to the work of Mr Cameron, the music of James Horner and the visual effects, not for the acting (I mean, Kate and Leo were good, but not outstanding)
Fun fact is that every time Jack Nicholson won Oscar, main actress also won Oscar.
Louise Fletcher in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

You are 100% correct. That was the only way to correct the Academy mistake!
I just watched that Ving Rhames tape the other day. Its just so touching and more so now as Lemmon is dead! Rhames exhibited unbelievable class and showmanship and was worthy of the award when he won unlike Ms. Hunt.
This is a deserved win because H.Hunt and Jack Nicholson were both masterful in "As good as it gets". Period.
While everyone else is busy debating the results of the world's most well-known opinion poll, I am going to take the time to comment on this gorgeously respectable and emotional speech Ms. Hunt gave that night. Killer!!!!!
I think that Kate Winslet should win the Oscar and I believe in it . 😘😘
Kate Winslet deserve to win oscar❤
The dog who played the role very well should have received an Oscar too))
0:30 I love the look Helena exchanges with her mother ❤ Her mum looks so proud..She should have won, but the Academy Awards are biased in favour of yanka.
As good as it gets is a very nice movie and Helen hunt nailed it!
I think the reasoning here, towards why Helen Hunt won Best Actress that year, was due to the fact that the remaining four nominees here were all British. She was the sole American here. It's the same reasoning that led to Marisa Tomei winning in 1992!
That's bullshit! The Academy are notoriously Anglophilic.
Winslet was obviously surprised.
I agree...Dame Judi Dench as Queen Victoria is the one we all remember!
James L. Brooks is such a great director. Every actors in his movies always gives best performances.
Awww Rose is at the Oscars. ❤️
Helen is a great actress, ever since she portrayed as Jo from "Twister" movie (1996).
she deserved it, she was phenomenal in as good as it gets, with jack nicholson, im so glad they sweeped the best actor and actress category.
Julie Christie was amazing in Afterglow.
All great performances ~ What a year~ I voted for Judi Dench :)
i agree with helen and jack over kate and leonardo . . . titanic won every category except in the acting categories which said a lot . . . kate and leonardo were young and have grown since then . . . he was awesome in the aviator and she was awesome in many films afterwards especially revolutionary road
Best Actress:
Helena Bonham Carter, "The Wings Of The Dove"
Judi Dench, "Mrs. Brown"
Pam Grier, "Jackie Brown"
Helen Hunt, "As Good As It Gets"*(WINNER)
Kate Winslet, "Titanic"
well it was important to her to win i guess so i would never dream of asking her to give it up, but i do think kate should have won. i mean her role is just that memorable. what the crap was helen hunt's character's name? i just call her waitress.
Kate Winslet's reaction: "Ooooh right...I forgot she was even nominated."
LOL
Helen Hunt 😍❤️
She is gorgeous.....
my thought is that she was STUNNING in As good as it gets, even if other nominees were good too.
