Roberth Andrew Martinez Haro I would love to have seen Lauren win. Most pundits thought she would. I all reality and fairness, though, JB gave the better performance, based sheerly on merit.
Amparo Narbona Plus, she really did kill the dress! And the shoutout to Lauren was pure class. You can’t beat a truly excited, unexpected win AND a classy, brief acceptance speech.
Having seen all five nominees, I don’t even understand how Bacall was the favorite besides sentimentality. She was lucky to be nominated among that group. Bacall has given great performances but not in that movie and I actually enjoyed that movie. Even in that clip, Mimi Driver outshone her. Just thinking about the depth and nuance of Joan Allen’s performance, the range and journey in Juliette Binoche’s, the hidden complexities going from snake to repentance in Hershey’s, and the raw authenticity and naturalism of Jean-Baptiste’s performance...Bacall’s didn’t even come close. Hell, even for a comedic performance that was full of one-liners and bitchiness, she’s not even in the top 50 or so that we’ve seen from other actresses/actors in that regard. Here, I’m glad the Academy came to their senses though I wonder how much of Binoche’s Oscar was for TEP and how much was it for their love of TEP plus her incredible and amazing performances previously like in Three Colors: Blue, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, etc. Well, what ever the case, I’m glad an actress of Binoche’s magnitude has an Oscar because it turns out this was her only chance for one...other than that nomination for Chocolat. Funny how the Academy recognized her for two performances that weren’t close to being her career’s best but those ones are ignored by them. Of course, it’s probably because she’s only been recognized for her English-language work.
1. Barbara Hershey - fiery portrayal of a complicit woman out to destroy Nicole Kidman 2. Joan Allen - engaging performance 3. Juliette Binoche - believable in the role 4. Marianne Jean-Baptiste - held her own against Brenda Blethyn as the social worker with consanguinal ties with the former 5. Lauren Bacall - nothing extraordinary in her performance. The role suits her best and she did the best that she could
Fast forward 27 years later, and the two actresses in the Marianne Jean-Baptiste clip are starring in "Hard Truths" and getting awards for it, with Oscar buzz for Jean-Baptiste herself. Oh, and Barbara Hershey was my favorite that year.
I never understood why people thought Lauren Bacall deserved an Oscar for that movie. Her performance wasn't that great. Binoche deserved the Oscar hands down. People thought that Bacall deserved it for her lifetime work, but an Oscar should always be given for the individual performance and not lifetime work. That's why they have special Oscars for lifetime achievement. Also, I never understood why The Crucible didn't get more Oscar noms especially for Paul Scoffield and Daniel Day Lewis. That film has a lot of great performances.
Well just like Olivia Coleman won over Glenn Close. Olivia is well known in UK/Ireland for her work, she won many awards. And to be honest.... wanted Glenn to win finally, but Olivia deserved it. Academy was very wrong years ago when Glenn lose for FATAL ATTRACTION or DANGEROUS LIAISONS.
Well, she had a good life with all HOLLYWOOD legends around, like good all Hollywood. Stories to tell, parties, no social medias..... just brilliant life. She probably met/knew all the Hollywood legends..... She was married to one legend. Humphrey Bogart. And I would be probably like OK, NO OSCAR, BUT....WHATEVER, I KNEW AND PARTIED WITH ALL LEGENDS !!!
No one questions when women are bisexual because everyone just assumes they all are. It’s hard to be a guy. A) Who cares? B) not all guys who are into other guys fall into some silly stereotype like being flaming or “obvious”. Grow up.
Because the Oscar tradition lately is the best actor or supporting actor from the previous year presents the award to the best actress or supporting actress. Same for the actresses that won their awards from the previous year present the best actor or supporting actor Oscar.
Even in Lauren Bacall’s Oscar clip, Minnie Driver is outshining her. I think the Academy came to their senses and realized it was more of a sentimental vote for her to possibly win.
They used a wrong Oscar clip for Bacall. I've seen the film and I think she had 2 scenes that is much better than they had used at the Oscar presentation.
Lauren bacall is and was at that moment a legend of classic cinéma...she didn't need an oscar for best "supporting role"...most of all in an average film (i've seen it...and i like a lot barbra streisand !)...juliette binoche was marvellous in the english patient an deserved that award plainly.
@@EricAKATheBelgianGuy holy shit! is this true?!?!? had no idea! shows you what sort of person Streisand is. where did you hear this out of interest? is it verifiable somewhere that Streisand voted for herself?
a) She looked like a vampire in that dress b) It's a bit insulting to the remaining 3 nominees to say you thought one particular person would win and she deserved to!
Lauren Bacall was the favorite to win leading up to the awards ceremony; she was a Hollywood legend and had already won the Golden Globe and SAG award over Juliette Binoche. It’s very rare for someone to win the Oscar after losing the GG and/or the SAG; that’s probably why Binoche thought that Bacall would win the Oscar.
SHE TOTALLY DESERVED THAT AWARD!
Amparo Narbona toty mcgoty!
No, she isnt. Laren should've won

No, she didn't. Her performance was nothing worth remembering.
Thanks for your uploads, it's great to see the actual clips that the Oscars channel cannot show.
Deserved it!!!!!
In my top movies of all time

Or because it's based on individual years and not a career best award...
Great cpmments. I loved Hershey in POAL
Mimi Rogers
Because a few people win who are older and people assume it's a career award and IN THIS CASE LIKE MANY....it didn't win
So Where's the outrage
@@siddharthnaagar7028being confused with Minnie Driver! Confused me for a second! Good catch!
Binoche rightfully won 🎉❤

I love Joan Allen in BOURNE movies... badass
Poor Lauren.
That haunting background music, his totally black outfit, his foreboding entrance on the stage. It all seems to take on a whole new dimension now.
If it was this year she would have wone the Jet ski ^^

even Winona Ryder deserved an Oscar nod for Best Leading Actress.

True but the Academy has indeed given out the award to others across the years as a recognition of their past work
@@sann5146 True, Academy did. Al Pacino is good example. He won over Denzel or Stephen Rea ( The Crying Game ).
Completely disagree It wasn’t for a lifetime of work either. Go back and watch the kitchen table scene with her and streisand. Brilliant !
Poor Lauren Bacall’s face. She REALLY thought she had this.

..bacall had it all..she did not need any oscar..
Such a difficult selection to choose from that year!!!
Owh yeah i remember watching this when everyone crossed their finger to Lauren Bacall.
min 5:08 class act 👑👑👑
Humble
Hopefully Joan Allen is next to win the Oscar.
Barbara Hershey should have been nominated for Beaches. I love Hershey with almonds!
For a film that was released 8 years previously?
Awesome actress
I'm sorry Juliette.
That you had to get your Oscar from Kevin Spacey.
why
@paul w You mean she's a woman so she's safe.
But I loved her in Chocolat!
Really not an upset result at all. A Bacall win would have been a "career" award.
who is the guy with barbara hershey?? can never figure that out :((
so cute!
Vive la France !
To those who were surprised that Spacey is gay, look at what he was wearing
I am still wondering, why he denied it for so long. It is so obvious that he was at least bi. Especially in hoc.
LOL. But I don't think anyone was surprised by that.
mir 124 not necessarily gay, a pederast. Into pubescent boys. That’s why he was secretive.

Category fraud. Binoche should have competed in leading role. 😒
Reginald Wilson read the book.
Reginald Wilson read the book
Was she nominated for her role in the book?
@Reginald Wilson well the title is the enlish patient and she was the nurse, so go figure
Not sure who this woman is but she's super cute.
The Academy never gives out the votes for each category.
Yes
Barbara Hershey should have won for portrait of a lady
Why is Kevin spacey presenting the award for best supporting actress?
Because the Oscar tradition lately is the best actor or supporting actor from the previous year presents the award to the best actress or supporting actress. Same for the actresses that won their awards from the previous year present the best actor or supporting actor Oscar.
Billy Crystal. Kevin Spacey. Palm Sunday. Great Easter. Joan Alan. Lauren Bacall. The Mirror has 2 faces. The Eng. Patient. J. B., .....
И целого,,ОСКАРА,, мало...

It was Mimi Rogers not Minnie Driver.
Barbara Hershey was robbed!!!!!!
LB thought she was a shoo due to hollywood history in but JB triumped and was the better actress for swinging in the church..
Lauren Bacall shouldve Won😭😭😭😭
Back when the Oscars was a family friendly show.
Lauren Bacall should have won the Oscar. They should have shown the scene in the kitchen. One of the biggest Oscar upsets in Oscars history

Glenn Close vs Olivia Colman would disagree
Maybe it was a way at getting even with Streisand for voting for herself and creating the tie in '68.
