  • This is the second in my series of #TBT videos covering older trips with stabilized, re-edited videos in 1080HD.
    I started this series with my first backpacking trip to the Peninsula Trail in southern Indiana, and it probably made sense to continue in sequential order, but instead I decided to tie in a couple #TBT videos to my recently published Zirkel Wilderness (Colorado) trip.
    This hike was one of two training hikes I did with my son, Christian, as preparation hikes for our first Colorado backpacking trip to the Zirkel Wilderness, and it was Christian's first backpacking trip. The other prep trip was to the Shawnee Backpack Trail in southeast Ohio, and I'll cover that hike in my next #TBT video. I decided to publish these two videos next in the series to complete the Zirkel 'story'.
    The poor uploaded quality of my earliest videos has always bothered me, and my purpose in re-publishing these older videos is simply to get them out there in the highest quality possible. All of these older videos were captured in 1080HD video but they were uploaded in a much lower resolution. What I have done with these #TBT videos is to start from 'scratch' with the editing using the original 1080HD captured video, then I apply off-board image stabilization, and finally re-edit using the skills I've acquired over all the years since. I can't correct the sometimes port techniques I used to capture the video, but I can do everything possible to extra every bit of quality I can.
    With that background I hope you enjoy this fresh look at one of my earliest backpacking trips... the Two Lakes Loop Trail in southern Indiana.

    That dog was practically raised on cheddar cheese spread. Of course he's going to stick up his nose to a mere Cheezit...

    Thanks David! I'm in the COVID-19 work from home mode here. Just set up my Chameleon Hammock and four-season tarp out front surrounded by East Texas Pines. We are getting a break in the weather it seems for the weekend so getting set. I mentioned your channel to another great hiker who just had to leave the AT due to COVID-19 shut down. I was hoping your recent work would inspire him to help him dodge the post-hike depression blues (that sounds like a Dylan song). Please keep up your video work!

    David, I am enjoying your re-edits of old trips. What off-board image stabilization are you using? Do you find that it degrades the video quality at all?

    • @davidgrayin
      @davidgrayin  4 года назад

      I'm using Mercalli SAL v4 for off-board image stabilization. It's fairly old software so there may be better options out there now, but it works well and it's 'paid for'! It doesn't have any noticeable effect on image degradation other than the 'zoom' effect required to actually do the computer-based stabilization (the way it works is it paints a digital 'border' around the shot that serves as a virtual 'gimbal' - the size of that border depends on the preset or customer settings you choose to use).

      @@davidgrayin Awesome. Thanks, I may look into that. By the way, since I am asking questions, what was the brand of that super slim collapsible tripod you just showed in one of your recent videos? It looked like carbon fiber rods or aluminium rods with shock cord on the insides to snap them straight.

    I was told it’s bad to let dogs drink waters from lakes and creeks due to bacteria’s and bugs

    • @brysonbuehrer
      @brysonbuehrer 4 года назад

      Dogs have highly acidic digestive systems, due to their ancestral need to break down cartilage and bone and the fact that their digestion starts in the stomach, not the mouth (like humans). They can easily tolerate water from lakes and streams, as long as the area isn't affected by giardia, algal blooms, or similar uncommon infestation. Just do your research and your dog will be fine!

    • @davidgrayin
      @davidgrayin  4 года назад

      The doggies have been fine 99%+ when they drink from streams, lakes, etc. in the backcountry. The only issue I've had with them getting an upset stomach (nothing worse than that) from drinking in the 'wild' has been on my local hikes in Indiana when they drink from a drainage sort of 'ditch' on my local hikes when the water is way down in the summer draught. Even then it's relatively mild, and I'm not certain it was caused by the water (though I suspect it was). They were 'designed' to drink from the backcountry' streams.

    • @davidgrayin
      @davidgrayin  4 года назад

      Another note on that... the dogs sense of smell is extraordinary, and they won't drink from any water they smell to be 'bad'.
