    my mom, who went to beauty school, has been bleaching, coloring, and even giving me perms since i was in 2nd grade and I'm in college now. despite all of that though, i don't have a single split end. since i was a kid, she taught me to always put conditioner in the ends of my hair while it was wet, and to comb it but not wash it out. when i wash it, i put it in a bun and only wash my scalp, and rinse my ends. your ends don't to be washed. i think all of this helps to keep my hair shiny and healthy.

      Sounds good. When you say you put it in a bun, where do you do the bun? At your nape or onto of your head? I've been doing it a few days but it tricky for the bin not to come loose

    As a hairdresser, I have been doing the "dusting" technique on clients for years, and it's wonderful. When you are literally cutting between 1/8 and 1/16 of an inch off the hair you WILL see growth and healthier hair. Most people who need this type of cut are also color treated, heat styling, and maybe not using the best products for their hair, so the hair may not be in the best condition. The information she is giving in this video is correct.

      What do you think about the split ender pro ?

  • @HeyRuka
    @HeyRuka 8 лет назад +72

    As a stylist myself I can say with certainty that trimming your hair does NOT make it grow faster or healthier. Your hair grows from the roots. The rate and health of your growth depends on diet, overall health, and genetics. However, if your ends are damaged, it will continue breaking up the hair shaft so please get your hair trimmed like she said! But only as needed.

      Exactly!!!!!
      I don't know where she got her info or who taught her this. And short hairs are 99% of the time just new hair(since we shed hair everyday and they do grow back).

      HeyRuka split ends stop breakage so that you can retain length 🤦‍♀️ any “hair stylist” would know that.

    I don't think the shorter hairs on top means they're short because they're broken. They could be just new growth and haven't reached the length yet. If you keep cutting them, they're never gonna reach your length, so aren't you gonna get stuck with a lot of fly aways all the time? And my split ends are not mostly at the top, they're always right at the bottom of my head, like around the neck and behind the ears. The inner hairs are always split. I think it's because they rub against my clothes the most. The top is a lot better.

      Ur hair could be dry. Put an oil in it. Not enuff to make it oily looking, but to smooth it. Ur work, home could be very dry/no humidity. Crack a,window open a bit to get humidity in, or put a pan of water out in room in winter. Or humidifier. Get a hair scarf for sleep. Cheaper than silk pillowcase. 3 bucks ebay

      I think she's saying mostly for people with bleach on colored hair but yet our mind is the same way I've reverted back to my natural color hard to get the split ends I don't know if they're split at the top or the bottom maybe both

    This was so incredibly helpful for me. I have the worst split ends. I used to blow dry my hair every single day for work. I'm now a stay at home mom and have not had a haircut in over 2 years. These tips that keep me from having to go into a salon or at least make my hair look less crazy until I can get some help are awesome! Thanks so very much!!!

    Not all hairs that "pop" out will be breakage, some will also be regrowth.

    • @DaveThompsonfairlife4all
      @DaveThompsonfairlife4all 8 лет назад +1

      +Practicerecordings I was thinking that too. Guess there's not much you can do about split ends except for preventing them in the first place.

    • @Practicerecordings
      @Practicerecordings 8 лет назад +7

      +Dave Thompson Yeah, you can actually see split ends though, if you take a small section and hold it to the light...it will have a V formation at the end, or will look ragged up the shaft a bit. I trim off those to where the hair looks healthy, but you have to be careful just trimming "all" hairs...or you will have no real growth on the hair that has recently started growing in. You'll just retain that fuzzy look, because you keep trimming everything trying to "catch up". LOL

    • @DaveThompsonfairlife4all
      @DaveThompsonfairlife4all 8 лет назад +1

      Practicerecordings I need all the advice I can get. Grown my hair for first time in my life in my 40's. No idea what I'm doing! Will leave it up to my hair dresser until my hair is long enough to focus on and bring in front of my face. I've got a lot of crappy damaged hair I'm trying to grow out, so got a few hair cuts ahead of me until I reach my full potential. Not that you needed to hear my story....

    • @Practicerecordings
      @Practicerecordings 8 лет назад

      +Dave Thompson Well, I will say that what is going on inside...will be your best approach, eat well, lots of water, and taking supplements will really make a difference. Also, find some good products, nothing expensive...just things that ease you through the transition, and also are not drying or stripping your hair. I personally have baby fine hair, with lots of wave and some curl...and it's moody as all hell. LOL I get a lot of electrical static, and it's so easy to weigh it down...so it ends up looking flat and greasy, if I am not careful. So I opt for a shampoo/conditioner recommended by dermatologists, and then a light leave-in with hemp, argan oil, etc. Kind of tames the frizzies and makes my hair softer and easier to manage.

    • @DaveThompsonfairlife4all
      @DaveThompsonfairlife4all 8 лет назад

      Practicerecordings
      That's good advice...thanks. I am doing that though, as have been studying hair care quite a bit for the last few weeks. I was letting life get me down these last few years, but then I decided I wanted long hair! lol You gotta be a positive person and keep eating well to get good hair. Been taking loads of supplements too, but my body decided to reject the fish oil tablets I'd been taking for a few weeks, by giving me a skin allergy. Got some cod liver oils instead, and hope I won't have a problem with them, Good multi-vit, sea kelp, Silica complex, Saw palmetto and fish oil are my new supplements, but I am sure I'm over-doing it. You could buy and take so much in the hope it helps hair, but it's my fault for not growing my hair when I was younger. I've got some Aussies leave-in conditioner, but it doesn't make it look that great, but it's not important if it's helping to protect it. Also bought some Tresemme keratin smooth shine spray, which actually makes my hair nice and soft, but I wanted to ask you..is it actually any good for hair even if I'm not heat styling it? I need to add something to it after washing, otherwise it all flops over my face :(

    yes! I've been dusting my own hair for years and didn't realize it was a technical term. I don't cut all the ends that pop out when I bend the hair, but this technique really makes the split ends stand out from the healthy hair and easier to cut those buggers off. :) :)

    This is amazing! I learned something today. Thank you!! I'm serious. I've always had trouble with breakage for whatever reason; I never brush my hair because it's curly and tends to be dry. One time many years ago I went in and told the stylist to cut the dead ends....I ended up with almost a crew cut. I wanted to die. I don't trust many people to cut my hair after that.

  • @TheSatchmoChannel

    I always so very much enjoy your videos. As for dusting, on my curly hair, most of the pieces that stick out do not have split ends. They're just new hair or broken lengths. So most splits are toward the bottom. I admit my hair is still recovering from a lousy salon dusting and awful spotty highlights. I was so disappointed that I've been touching up and trimming my own hair using your instructions--for about a year. I'm glad to know you are not the sort of stylist who just chops off hair if a client doesn't want to lose length. By the way, dhe top you're wearing is beautiful. Does it run large, small?

    I like how candid you are and reasonable, especially when you described your view on brazilian blowout. Thank you so much for giving me hope! Sounds really sad but hair is one of the first things that people see and it's not that different to having bad acne, if you don't feel confident or just know that your hair is dull/limp... you're going to feel pretty crap about yourself. My parents said I had horrible flat hair since I was a child and I guess I had a little complex! 12 years of seeing different hairdressers (worldwide) and still no-one seemed to 'get' my hair! I would leave the salon or their house really disappointed. THANK YOU Silvia for the past year, I have been using your tutorials and listening to you, you make so much sense and finally got the long layered hair of my dreams (with some volume!) thanks to you. Made such a big difference to my confidence and well... life. Ps you and Adam are super cute together

I have always been very reluctant to cut my hair at home, because I wear layers and I always felt like I would mess it up, so I was stuck to either spend a lot of money in the salon or wear not-that-great hair. You saved me with this tip, I just did it at home and it took me like 10 min and my hair looks fabulous. Thank you!

    Omg this is so helpful! My hair is very light blonde (it used to b platinum but has lost some lightness over the past couple years & I'd like to get it re-lightened using olaplex) but it just does not wanna grow & I know it's from split ends & breakage so this is incredibly helpful & useful to me. Thank u!

    Omg I LOVE your hair! ^-^ I have very long hair also with a dull colour but sometimes I get bored with it. I love layers but I think that tends to look better on shorter or medium-lengthed hair.

    Love Watching you Silvia and listening to your great tips. This video is so perfect for me right now coz I noticed today that my length has shortened a bit from lightening so much. I deep condition and cover on argon oil as much as poss and have started using a bamboo brush so hopefully the condition is ok and will grow back soon. X
